I have suffered with leg cramps that wake me up out of a deep sleep for years. Usually this happens in the early morning hours. I have noticed that the only way I can stop the cramps is to have a bowel movement, and what do you know, every time this happens, I really need to have a bowel movement. I have searched the web over and over to see if anyone else has made this connection, but to no avail. I would love to know the scientific/medical reason a full bowel causes such excruciating leg cramps.

Leg cramps either..thankfully I tried taking magnesium. An on line article said if. You had cramps in one leg you were needing more potassium if cramps in the other leg magnesium. I don't remember which leg for what, but the magnesium sure worked for me. My leg would cramp so bad it felt like the bones would break getting worse if I dared to move. I found I can chew a couple of magnesium tablets and the cramps will stop about the time I finish chewing them. Now I also take magnesium citrate capsules as well ,Google leg cramps and magnesium and lots of articles will come up,some by MD Dr's.
Yesterday it was hot and muggy in South Carolina. I was re-roofing my home and sweated through 3 pairs of pants and 3 tee shirts. I was drinking some water but probably not enough. When I was through, I started drinking beer. If I had an electrolyte in me, I probably peed it out.
Last night I had the worst cramps I ever had. My hands, arms, feet, and both my legs were all cramping at once. I keep Hylands Leg Cramp pills on hand and after taking 9 of them, I was still cramping.
Finally at 2:30 in the morning, I went on this website. I couldn't see me putting soap in my bed, but I was considering gulping down some mustard. I noticed that some people were talking about organic raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar. I happened to have some Bragg Vinegar in the back of my refrigerator from a kidney infection I thought I had a couple of years ago. I took a couple of swigs and got the worst heartburn I've had in years. I took a couple of Tums along with it.
You know what? The cramps immediately stopped! I went to bed and slept fine the rest of the night. I'll be more careful in the future and definitely keep apple cider vinegar on hand.
I was sitting in my recliner when my right leg began to cramp. The pain was excruciating. I had a small bottle of apple cider vinegar, ginger and garlic that I had previously purchased to stop leg cramps. I struggled to get to where the bottle was stored and quickly took a swallow. In less than 20 seconds the cramp completely resolved. I was convinced that this really works.
I eat a banana - I think the lack of potassium is what causes my cramps. Most often its from being still or laying too long that triggers the cramp ie on a long airline flight or in bed too long. Banana's work and not fattening and good for your diet to boot plus I like the taste. Just dont buy @ an Airport - they charge $1.25 for one. Ouch !!!!!
My severe leg cramps will go away when I take 1-2 tablespoons of black strap molasses (of course, do not take this if you are a diabetic).
My leg and foot cramps can be so severe that I think toes or my ankle will break. I associate the foot and leg cramps with fatigue, and having drunk too much caffeine. I am forced out of bed by the excruciating pain, and it sometimes takes up to 5 minutes to ease the cramp. My doc has been of no help; just says some people are prone to the cramps. None of the web medical advice is worth much, in my book.
My remedy is diet tonic water at the time of the cramp, but I have to drink a fair amount of it.
I get muscle cramps in my legs and groin that are so painful I can barely walk. But I have cure that ALWAYS works in about 60 seconds. A teaspoon of ordinary baking soda in a glass of water. That's it.
Apple Cider Vinegar is a traditional remedy for leg cramps. Adding electrolytes is a modern way to improve on the basic formula, as is using quality unfiltered apple cider vinegar. I found a product called 'Pilgrims Remedy' that does this; it's at plimothbaye.com or nomorelegcramps.com. Good Reviews so far.
