I don't have a remedy but I do have some words of hope. I got GH back in 2005 from an older bf that didn't know he had it. So when they say they've been tested and they're clean, don't listen. I too went to the doctor and with a very matter of fact not caring tone was told I had GH. Like many of you I burst into tears and was willing to take whatever meds they would prescribe to make it better.
I took the meds and paid the outrageous prices for years until I realized I had to either pay rent or buy the pills. It was then that I realized I wasn't going to let this disease run or ruin my life. I am not a doctor but I did stop taking the pills for both daily use and outbreaks and noticed that my outbreaks were less frequent, only a couple of times a year. I tend to get outbreaks when I'm extremely stressed or (I know this sounds strange) with the change of seasons.
I also initially thought I would never find someone who would understand or accept me for me, rather only see the GH. I decided to be honest before engaging in any sexual activitites (go figure, someone being honest!) and you would be surprised how many people don't look at the disease, but look at you. I've been with my fiancé for over 5 years and now we're to be married in July 2015.
It's annoying, it hurts and itches at times, and it looks gross but don't let it control your life. They've found cures for other diseases and I look forward to the day that they'll find a cure for GH.

I read through all the advice two days ago, anxious to find the quick cure. I'm completely healed in two days, three days after the outbreak. I tried to find the cheapest and most effective solution. Keep in mind, it was a small outbreak, so depending on severity healing time could be different.

1st - Started taking the valacyclovir I had been prescribed.

2nd - Upped vitamins and healthy eating schedule. Ate lots of veggies, garlic, switched from coffee to green tea with honey.

3rd - Cleaned area 4-5x a day with soap and water, towel dried then rubbing alcohol dabbed on. Applied Vitamin E oil liberally to the sores. Let air dry (went commando for extra air drying).

Seemed to work a charm. If you're in pain, I wouldn't recommend the rubbing alcohol, as it can sting - just clean and dry then Vitamin E. The Vitamin E oil acts as a seal and promotes healing. I think this was the key to a speedy recovery, though the healthy eating definitely helps.

Above all, keep a positive attitude. This infection is annoying but not a disaster. It's super common - as a single lady, I know about 50% of women in my demographic have it. I like to think of herpes as an occasional nuisance, like the big zit that sometimes appears on my forehead. Wish I had a quick cure for that too - if anyone has one please share!

I don't have a remedy not have I been diagnosed yet. I took the test today and I'm waiting for my results but I am certain it's positive as all the symptoms are there. :'( I feel like I can't function. I'm scared and don't know where or who to turn to. My boyfriend got tested recently and didn't have it but I did (we've had a long relationship and broke up and I was with someone else then we got back together. We have a two year old daughter together) anyway I'm scared and ashamed. I don't know what to do. And I know he'll leave me once my results show positive. I have no friends and no one else to turn to. Please help me.

I don't have a remedy but I've been diagnosed with GH yesterday. I am in a lot of pain but have to catch a short flight tomorrow so I can go home to my family (I live away at college). I've tried pouring talc on my sores but that hasn't seemed to help, do you have any other suggestions? I'm still trying to process this diagnosis emotionally but right now the physical pain is distracting me, to the point where I am fainting. I also noticed a spot of blood as I tried to wipe last night and was just wondering if this has happened to anybody else? Also does anybody else get insanely tired, because if I'm not crying in pain I'm sleeping and I was just wondering if this is normal. Thanks.

This really is something that you have to try different things to find what works for you. I find I use different remedies as far as daily maintanence, beginning of an OB, during an OB with open sores, as well as when they begin to heal. You just have to be patient and find what works best for you.
I took a more natural/homeopathic approach. These are things that have helped me:
Soak in bath for 20-30 min with Epsom Salt, Hydrogen Peroxide and Rubbing Alcohol. If possible morning & evening. This will help dry out sores. It may sting & burn a little at first but that's a good thing. (Aveno Oatmeal bath packets are great too)
I googled herbs & vitamins that help & purchased just about every vitamin & herb suggested! ha ha I have noticed I tend to take the herbs more during outbreak & vitamins more as daily maintance to keep my immune system up. I suggest googling herbal remedies or natural remedies to help you decide what you want to try. Vitamins such as Lysine (I take 2000mg twice a day during outbreak, 500mg daily if not), zinc, echinacae, vitamin D, C, B, garlic, cayenne, etc help keep immune system and metabolism up.
Herbs such as Melissa/lemon balm, oil of oregano, olive leaf, bee propolis, tea tree oil, reishi mushrooms, have been helpful for me. Carmex, cornstarch or gold bond help with itching.
After I soak in bath, I swab the area with hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol or witch hazel (if open sores, hydrogen peroxide will be least painful). you can use hair dryer on low/cool setting to dry area. I make a paste with crushed up lysine, zinc, Benedryl (or generic is fine), add any other herbs or vitamins you want to add (vitamin c will sting a bit), add drops of tea tree oil, aloe vera, zinc ointment, or coconut oil... Any of these will mix well as a paste. apply to sores with q-tip or cottonball (use several as to not spread infected area), again hair dryer helps if needed. Reapply throughout the day if possible, or again before bed.
As they start to heal, zinc ointment on the area has been the best thing for me in healing them quickly. Remember to keep up on vitamins daily to maintain healthy immune system.

Last year around February I had sex with a couple guys. I threw a party when my parents were gone and hooked up with a couple of guys (I was 14) I Am almost 16 now.My dad figured out I was sexual active. One day I all of a sudden kept getting irritation down there and it got way worse and to the point where it was so unbearable that I'd rather die. When I was at school I was so depressed and was so uncomfortable I can't even explain. I told my dad I think I have a yeast infection but I felt like I did have herpes . The doctor said it might be just a yeast infection. The next day I felt much better it was going down but then at lunch list school I got a call saying my test came back that I have genital herpes. I started crying like crazy. I knew fav it to me but he doesn't know it was the guy im sprung over and still am for over a year. I love him so much but hate him at the same time. I was warned that he had herpes but I thought it was just a high school rumor because I was just a I'm a sophomore and he's a senior and before he graduates im gonna tell him how in love I am with him and he should know he gave me herpes. Herpes changed my life:/ Baby powder will help a little and oatmeal baths. But if there are any girls that are struggling eith this I want you to know it's okayy!!! I promise♥

I've had genital herpes for about 8 years. I have found that applying rubbing alcohol to the sore is quite effective in drying them out quickly. I'm am I'm the healthcare profession and generally alcohol is not recommended for anything except for disinfecting surface areas and skin, it's an old school remedy for treating pimples, scrapes, and wounds. But I'm going against my profession and will say that this works for me. It generally dries out my sores in less than 3 days without the use of anti viral medications such as Valtrex. Applying the alcohol does burn, however if I turn a hair dryer on the cool setting and point at the affected area while applying the alcohol it doesn't burn at all. My outbreaks only tend to occur on the putter labia (tougher skin) so this may not work as well for those who have outbreaks on the penis or inner labia. Hope this helps!

I was diagnosed 2 days ago with GH. I'm still waiting for the blood and culture results but it's quite obvious. I'm am feeling quite devastated. It's so hard not to think less of myself, like now I'm damaged goods. I'm trying to make it through this first outbreak, but goodness gracious, I'm in PAIN. I have been taking valacyclovir twice a day, lidocaine jelly every 4 hours, and because I feel like dying every time I urinate I use vasoline to help protect my sores. I have literally read every post and comment on here and I have to say thank you to everyone. I managed to get myself to the store tonight and I bought just about every recommendation. I'm going to first try Epsom salt water in a squirt bottle for when I urinate. I purchased hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle, gloves, and the ingredients to make the Tylenol pm paste. I also purchased tea tree oil and tea tree oil soap for cleaning in the shower. I unfortunately do not have a bath tub in my home so I will be attempting to get through with my trusty squirt bottle. I will update and tell you how things go. Once I'm over this physical phase, I'm moving onto the emotional part. Right now it's all too much to deal with. I have no idea who I got it from, possibly my new partner who is unbelievably supportive but swears he doesn't have it, or my ex who I was with for 8 years who so nicely cheated on me. I feel so bad for my new partner because if this is something I've had, I could have given it to him unknowingly. He is going to get tested once my results come back. I don't even know what to do right now. And was I the only one surprised by the 1 in 5 statistic? Before finding this great site, I really felt like I was the only one. Once again, thank you for all your great advice and for sharing your stories.

Hi Everyone,

I went to the doctor two days ago because it was burning when I pee. The urine test showed a Urinary Tract Infection. Then two days later the pain felt worse and so I started to self examine and noticed some lesions around my vagina. I was horrified! I started googling it and most pointed towards herpes, staph infection, or yeast infection.

I went to the doctor this morn and he said most likely it is GH. I just burst into tears! I've never had an STI in my life and have had 3 monogamous relationships. I've never had an outbreak before. The doctor wasn't the best about it either. He seemed to come off as very judgmental. I told him I haven't had sex in over a year and he didn't believe me. He made me feel so awful.
I don't know how to cope with this. I feel so ashamed and don't understand after over a year why this would come up now? I've never had a cold sore before either.
He has prescribed Valacyclovir and T3s for the pain. I would prefer to get rid of the pain in a more natural way but it hurts so much that all I can do is cry. He said it is quite a big outbreak.
I've tried putting baking soda on but it makes it hurt so bad. Are they any less painful home remedies that will help dry them up?

I have had gh since 1987. My first husband had it while we were dating and didn't bother to tell me until I came to him all upset with this painful, itchy, pimple like area on my polly that wouldn't pop. Instead, he handed me some Acyclovir/Zovirax ointment and then told me that he had caught it from a girl that didn't tell him until it was too late years before. He assured me that it really wasn't a big deal. I was young and naive and didn't know any better. 27 years later , I am still living with it, but have mastered what can be a real pain in the puss. I only have an outbreak maybe 3-4 times a year and it only last for a couple of days. Stress, menstrual periods, or anything that weakens your immune system will exacerbate it or cause it 59 come on. The number one thing above anything that you can do to minimize it is NOT TO SCRATCH THE AREA WHEN YOU FEEL AN OUTBREAK COMING ON!!!!! Instead, immediately start lightly applying Acyclovir cream at the first sign. Sometimes, if you catch it early enough, you can stop the outbreak in its tracks. If it's a mean outbreak and you can resist the itch, then only then do I start taking the Valtrex pills ( 1 gram twice a day) for maybe 2 days and it's gone. During that time I still continue to use the Acyclovir cream. Also, try not touch it when you wipe after urinating. After applying the cream always wash your hands thoroughly. The tiny amount of drainage that is released from the sores is how it is transferred from person to person. Once you have been exposed to the virus , outbreaks usually occur in the same area. When you scratch/touch the area you will cause the sore to drain. Although it's not visible to see - it is still occuring so during that time you have to use protection. Bottom line is that it doesn't have to ruin your life. Once you know your body and how to deal with it. I have been married to my second husband for 10 years now and so far, have not passed it onto him. We don't use protection - only abstinence when I can feel the first sign of 'the tingle' coming on. It's definitely the gift that keeps on giving.....but, not the end of the world!!!
