Thanks all here to learning about Lysine, which I had never heard of before. I normally rush to the pharmacy in Spain, where you can buy without a prescription, Acyclovir 200mg tablets and hit these as soon as I feel the first signs. You take about 5 a day, and within 24 hours it stops the on set in it's tracks and quite often I am left feeling that, maybe i was mistaken and it wasn't really a 'cold soar'. Now I am in South africa, where you need a prescription, so left it and looked on this site and found this info. Without the acyclovir I have a horrible soar from spending one day on the beach as the first hot day of summer here last week. Acyclovir 200mg is cheap, but if you go to the higher dose of 800mg, it is very expensive.
Damn just used nail vanish remover on my cold sore stings like crazy and so diffucult to hold there as im inhaling it ew! Tried alcohol on it an toothpaste too just feels all cold now, no change :(
I was just reading all the remedies, because when I woke up from a nap this afternoon, I had that tingle on my lips as if I was getting a fever blister, so as my day go it kept getting bigger and bigger and 20 mins ago it was full grown and looked like it was about to bust, so I decide to find a home remedies, and all I had was alcohol and peroxide, which I keep on my counter already mixed with cotton balls because I wash my face with them, so I decide to take a cotton ball and put it on my lip, which I held it against the blister for 5 mins and right away it started to get smaller and small as I keep applying it, now after walking around all day with this on my lip, it has went down a lot.. thank you because I didn't want to go to work, with something that big on my lip.
I woke up yesterday with my dreaded twice a year cold sore. I live in New England and typically get them when the weather gets cold.
I have tried everything under the sun...abbreviated, Zovirax, Denavir, lysine. It's always a solid 8-10 day process, and painful.
I'm just here to vouch that the nail polish remover idea unbelievable. I woke up yesterday with the blisters. Last night I tried the remedy. I sterilized a needle and popped the blisters (on 3 different areas of my bottom lip). I immediately applied a cotton pad dipped in acetone, holding it on for about 3 minutes. It burns.
I'm a big advocate of unrefined organic coconut oil, so I spread some on my lips using a qtip. I woke up this morning, my lips moisturized after being doused with acetone, and all the little blisters have turned pink and crusted over. I basically skipped 3 days of the healing process.
Anything with alcohol really will help them. I recommend taking a dab of pure vanilla extract on a cotton ball or q tip (if you don't have those then just use a couple tissues or something soft) and make sure you dab it on the sore (don't rub it) and it should take away the pain and eventually the whole cold sore itself. Do this twice a day till it's completely gone. Try not to touch the sore at all. Good luck guys!
Cold sores have been a battle for at least 15 years of my life. I have tried every home remedy out there (ice, lemon, ear wax, topical creams, nail polish remover, toothpaste, etc..) and some definitely work while others not so much. Heres what has worked for me:
As soon as I feel a cold sore coming on (AS SOON AS POSSIBLE) I take rubbing alcohol and soak a folded up square of toilet paper (or anything similar- cotton ball, paper towel, q-tip) and RUB the forming blisters until they break open (yes this stings). I continue to apply rubbing alcohol until the spot is totally dried out (usually the first day). Just make sure you are able to totally dry out the sores otherwise the liquid will ooze out and spread) I also take a good amount of Lysine through the breakout starting on the first day. Once I get the cold sore dried out, I apply abreva, vitamin e oil or something to help with healing. My cold sores usually only last 3 days compared to 7-10 days and are much smaller than they used to be.
I guess to reiterate what I have learned from trial and error about cold sores is that you have to dry them out before the blisters are able to form and get big. When those blisters are allowed to fill with fluid and get huge, this is not only extremely painful but also adds a few days to the life of the cold sore. I have realized that if I dry my cold sore out on the first day, I take AT LEAST 2 days off the life of my cold sore and keep myself from a lot of pain. When those blisters are able to form, it makes the scab much larger as well later on. Anyway, hope this helps. Cold sores are terrible and i have tried everything to fight these off with this remedy only being extremely effective for me every time.
Here's a little secret that works for me. I suffer from cold sores and in the last few years have a system that destroys my cold sore the same day. The Answer: Red Wine! I simply dab the cold sore every couple of hours with any kind of red wine and in a few hours it dries up and the scab falls off. For me it has work much more efficiently and cheaply than any other method. I also have sensitive skin so like to stay away from harsh chemicals. Not to mention that you also get enjoy a nice glass of wine.
I just had a the biggest cold sore of my entire life. It must have been the size of a dime. I literally got rid of it in 24 hours.
Wait until it stops tingling. Meaning its at its full growth.
Pop it by gently irritating the skin with a qtip soaked in nail polish remover or alcohol (some people use a sterile pin)
Be sure not to get the juice anywhere else or it could start another cold sore easily.
This part is gross but I actually used a sterile tweezer to peel the first layer of the skin open and peel it away from the blister. leaving a gapping wound.
Now if you dont kill all the virus it will just close up and form another blister.
cover the open wound with salt and add a drop of peroxide. It will form a huge bubbly mountain ontop of the sore, It will burn like hell. Eventually it will dry up and become crusty salt. 1 hour
this point! NO MORE BLISTER! but now you have a gaping wound. This is good though, now time to clean with more peroxide, and use neosporin religiously. every 30 minutes reapply the neosporin. You are simply bringing the wound to scab phase and then POOF. GONE!
My scab was nice and skin toned, even though there was still some swelling I could have left the house on day 2 with the skin colored scab and felt comfortable. All of day 3, just apply apply apply neosporine.
I use to get cold sores frequently (6-10 per year). It is very frustrating and depressing. I even used prescription meds and they had varying levels of success from okay to no help at all. I also tried the L-Lysine diet with no success. I've tried various ways of modifying my diet over the years with no success. However, over the last year i've had very few outbreaks and (knock on wood) in the last 4-5 month period i've had no outbreak which is a miracle for me. When i was younger i had outbreaks 1-2 times per year. As i finished university and moved into the work world the outbreaks increased almost exponentially. I thought about the differences in my diet. I did't consume much milk when i was growing up. Perhaps a litre a week on average. As an adult my dairy consumption skyrocketed. Milk (2%) became my main beverage source. 6-8 litres a week, along with yogurt, ice cream, cheese and i was also consuming whey protein powders. Earlier this year i virtually eliminated milk and yogurt from my diet. I now consume maybe 500ml of milk per week. No yogurt. But i started drinking about a litre of kelfir per week. So as you can see it's not exactly a controlled experiment. Not sure what the determining factor is but it seems to be working so i'm going to continue. Just wanted to through this out there for others if they want to try. I constantly see home/scientific remedies advocating for the consumption of lots of dairy (L-Lysine) as a preventative. I wonder if all the antibiotics and hormones that are given to cows to promote milk production might be part of the issue. Don't know. All i know is after cutting down on milk and drinking plain o water it seems to be helping. Cheers!
Last week I woke up from a nap with a tingly sensation and the white tip already forming of the awful cold sore. My boyfriend was coming back from a Long trip in a few days and there was no way I was going to let this cold sore get in the way. I've suffered from cold sores the last year and finally beat one-so never again!!!
First- go to your local vitamin store and get..Oil Of Oregano, Lysine pills, Monolaurin, Vitamin C, Olive Leaf pills. As you can see, all of these have antiviral/antibacterial properties.
Apply Oil of Oregano to your lip and take it orally. I took it all day long.
The Lysine & vit C caps are so big that I would open the capsules and put it in a shot of water so it was easier to take. I actually liked the flavor too. Do this on an empty stomach. The olive leaf and monolaurin was taken with food.
Do this All day long for the first 1-3 days. Heavy dosages!
Oil Of Oregano (All day on lip and orally about 4xday)
Monolaurin (about 4 pills 3xday)
Olive Leaf (about 2 pills 3xday)
Lysine (about 2 pills 3xday)
Vit C (about 2 pills 3xday)
It was a lot of work but I was determined to get better without suffering thru an embarrassing outbreak. I used to use tea tree oil and whiskey on the lip but I have never seen anything work as efficiently as oil of oregano. If you only do 1 thing out of my list it's Oil of Oregano!! Do it! You won't regret it. And of course ice through out the day.
