597 Home Remedies for Cold Sores

Rubbing alcohol!!! Soak it in rubbing alcohol once every couple hours. Cold sore will go away in 3 days, tops.

I first learned to use bleach, and generally cover the sore and my entire upper and lower lips once, let it dry, and reapply in 20 minutes or so. It works great for me, unless the sore, in one case thus far, is on the skin near my lips. Seemed to help, but more slowly. I've experimented with vinegar, it works, as will tea tree oil. I've used mustard and wine vinegar, and they worked reasonably well. I suppose in my case, the cold sore viruses are simply not too tough, maybe?

I've suffered from cold sores for 36 years and have tried all home remedies as well as doctor prescribed. Though not exactly a cure, I believe I now know the cycle of a cold sore enough to share some valuable information to others still trying tooth paste, alcohol etc. Zovirax ointment helps a lot, however the cold sore will still run it's course so it's important to know how to handle it so that it's gone as soon as possible.

Here's my fast healing theory and remedy! I have noticed that immediately after a shower my CS looks better and swelling goes down. The more I shower and wash the area (without actually touching the sore or rubbing), and just let the warm water soak the area, the more it changes and runs it's virus cycle. My theory is that a warm shower increases circulation without damaging the skin around the cold sore, and when the body cools after the shower it brings the swelling away from the area of inflammation. Essentially a vascular flush happens (a method used in massage therapy when bringing down swelling in a muscle) and it's that flushing that helps the area heal faster. If a blister forms I recommend the tiniest pin prick and then dabbing (no rubbing or scraping!!) the area with a tissue to soak up the fluid. After pricking the blister, you can again wash the area with water and dab dry, but the most important part is not damaging the skin on the cold sore because any damage will make it a very long process to heal once the virus is gone (avoiding that annoying red scab phase).

In between the showers the only thing you should put on the sore is Zovirax if you have it, but avoid alcohol, tooth paste, or any harsh substance that will damage the skin. I think a lot of people think you have to 'kill' or zap a cold sore like its a living thing. The truth is that the virus comes from within and the blister is only a symptom of the virus itself so it can be stopped from the outside. It has to run it's course, but you can speed it up with lots of gentle washing, and Zovirax in between. The change is almost instant after a shower. I sweat by this. Good luck!!

Usually I notice a coldsore coming in first thing in the morning when I wake up. I don't have time to fuss over it so I first cover it in toothpaste-this helps to dry to it out and slow down its development. I leave the toothpaste on for about 30 mins (while I get dressed, have breakfast etc.) then wipe it off just before I leave the house. By the time you wipe it off the toothpaste should have become dry. Once I leave the house I'll spend my 30-ish minute drive to work melting an entire ice cube on the cold sore. Cold sores thrive in warm moist environments, so drying it out and making it very cold are sure to slow it down if not stop it. If I catch a cold sore at first tingle and do this straight away it usually doesn't form at all.
If my coldsore gets past the first tingle stage, my favourite tried and true method is to use a q-tip to apply metholated spirits to the coldsore, as often and for as long as possible. I know you're not supposed to put it on your skin or especially around your mouth but it dries it up SO FAST! I once had a fully formed coldsore, blistering and oozing and horribe, applied metholated spirits constantly for an hour and it was GONE! It dries it out, kills all the germs, and heals it all at once. If I don't have metho I will use peroxide but it's not nearly as quick- it does help to dry it out but that's about all.

If you want to get rid of a cold sore in 2 days FOR SURE, try this will need

1.) Rubbing alcohol
2.) Ice pack
3.) Abreva/med lip balm

If you catch your cold sore early on put Abreva it asap, but if your like me and only realise you have one oncInc you hit the 'blister' phase then this is what you do

Get a q tip or fold a piece of paper towel into a small rectangular stick, dip into alcohol and hold onto affected area for 45 mins, now of course this will hurt like hell but only for the first 5-10 min, just suck it up and move on to step 2 ICE you want to ice your cold sore to number the stinging sensation and reduce the swelling, so hold the ice over it for about 10 mins after that your ready for step 3 ABREVA use abreva or any other medicated lip balm to cover your sore for about an hour or two after you have completed all of these steps....DO IT AGAIN that sucker will be gone before you know it trust me I had 3 cold sores at ONCE and they are all gone on day 3!!

Ok so I honestly don't know which one of these worked bc I did so much, but hey this is war. On Monday I felt a tingletingle on the center of my lower lip and I panicked. I had literally just gone 2 days since my last out break had cleared up to where it was just pink skin. These things cripple my life. I don't go out and stay in my house doing battle. Ive read a lot of remedies, since ive been getting these things (under a year now). And instead of changing things I just incorporated them as I saw fit. With plenty of consulting this page and many MANY more lol. At the first tingle I started icing, rubbing alcohol and tea tree oiling the shit out of it. So much so where I was having trouble discerning whether the blister was forming or i was just rapidly drying out my lip. But I kept at it and dropped prob 8000 mgs of lysine through out the day. When I got home I put garlic on it ice then rubbing alcohol, then tea tree oil to sit on for a little bit. Woke up the next morning and it looked like it was going to be a bad one. So I kept at it and kept at it. High doses of lysine, about 2000mgs morn, noon, night, then another 1500-2000 right before sleep. I also started taking garlic pills, Echinacea, and zinc. At about double doses. Didnt want to overdue it. I did everything again, garlic sliced in half and squeeze the juice then place it on the sore for about 10 mins, once that was done I'd put alcohol on a q tip, and hold it for about 30 secs. Then I'd put tea tree oil on it and hang out. Mind you I still have started blistering and getting all nasty. It was just kind of turning a brown. Now at this point I started reading a lot of stuff on honey. Sooooo I slapped some of that in intervals between the tea tree oil after my garlic and alcohol sesh's. Went to sleep with tea tree oil on it. Woke up and it definitely looked like a scab. I was THRILLED. Literally 3 days and it was a scab. So I started putting neosporin on it after I decided these blisters weren't coming. And few hrs later I was examining myself in the mirror and trying to get dry skin flakes off my lips and one of them stuck to the scab! I freaked out bc my curiosity told (and made me keep pulling) then my rational side came out and I stopped. So I hear I was standing in front of a mirror with a cold sore scab half hanging off my bottom lip and the other half not feeling so willing to come. So I go to my alcohol and rub rub rub. Not literally. I try not to roll or rub at all as to not spread it around l, just my thinking. I do this a bunch. Now I FINALLY got that horrible stinging that everyone was complaining about lol. It stung lol. Needless to say, I blasted my lip again with q tip covered in teatree oil and just hung out for about an hr or two. I wanted to wait longer but having something perpendicular aattached to your lip is a bit annoying. Sooo I went to the mirror and slowly and strategically pulled the rest off. And when I say strategically I mean start going for other areas around the scab that are weaker. And I took that sucker off. It started bleeding a little bit to which I instantly went into a panic; herpe juice!!! And dabbled the blood with a paper towel. Then alcohol the shit out of that thing. Once it stopped bleeding I put tea tree oil on it for a while and came back and it was all just pink. Minus a little red spot but neosporin'll clear that up by tomorrow I think. I am ecstatic to share this with this community bc I can't express how low and how much comfort I get from this sit and a few other just for piece of mind and to know im not alone in this fight. I plan on keeping up with a lysine regiment. Prob start with 500 mgs a day and see how it goes. There's a lot of information on this. You just have to work what's best for you and unfortunately we can only achieve that through trial and error. I wish all of you good luck!!

Its now day 3 of this cold sore but I can't tell if its going to full develop. Does anyone have any past experience where they treated it immediately and it went past the ulcer and weeping stage to the scabbing? Does this actually happen? Please and thank you.

Valtrex!! I have finally found the best possible remedy. Take 2000mg at the first tingle of a coldsore and 2000mg 12 hours later. It will barely even appear. If it does it will be short lived. I used to jump into these forums every time I got one.. And tried every home remedy I could think of til I came across this.. You need a prescription from your Doctor but you can just say you get the other kind of sores (you know, down there) and say you need the 30 tablet box.. It's cheaper and will last you a few outbreaks so you don't have to keep going back.

You're welcome ;)

Avon's blemish clearing spot treatment for acne! Believe me, it works WONDERS. Got rid of my cold sore within a day, literally. It stings a bit when you are applying it, but it works great!!
