Place a small amount of boric acid in 2 cups of boiling water. Let it cool and use the solution with eyecups to wash the eyes for quick relief and also to clean the eyes.

If you look at any eye wash kit from your local drug store you will see the ingredient is boric acid!

When we were children and would wake up during pollen season with our eyes glued shut, our grandmother would make a solution of boric acid and water, soak a cotton ball, and dab our eyes clean. It was very soothing and worked like a charm. It's funny; I've read that people have used this remedy for generations, but I've never read of anyone going blind or having any other complications.

My grandmother suggested using one tablespoon of Boric acid to one quart of water. Make sure to boil the water for ten minutes to sterilze it, add the boric acid and allow the mixture to cool completely before use. She says this is how her mother always did it.

Something more specific than 'a small amount' might be useful. Boric acid is commonly used in commercially available eye wash solutions (such as Bausch and Lomb), but be sure to use sterilized water, preferable distilled, and sterile utensils. I have seen the ratio of 1 teaspoon per quart of water elsewhere. I have used this myself and find it quite effective.

I wish to correct my comment as to the concentration I have seen for boric acid eye wash. It was one tablespoon per quart of boiled water (vs. teaspoon).

Attention: Hand Lotion can KILL you, if you eat enough of it! Boric Acid dissolved 1 tablespoon to 1 quart of previously boiled and cooled water certainly will sooth 'red' eye and reduce swelling due to allergies in a matter of days, and I'm not blind after 20 years. NOTE: DO NOT drink remaining solution when complete, especially if your a ROACH!

Let's see.. VIGAMOX ingredients are as follows... Each ml contain the following

active: moxifloxcin hydrochloride 5.45 mg
inactive: boric acid, sodium chloride and purified water. May also contain hydrochloric acid and/or sodium hydroxide to adjust pH.

This is straight off the box. I spent $64.00 for a little bottle of this for my 1 yr old son's eyes and afterwards decided to look to see what relieves the irritation because the drops are not seeming to work. I found that a cool washcloth seemed to ease his discomfort if gently laid across his eyes when he was laying down.
