I'm a dentist and I'm pleased to read this quality advise for dry sockets following an extraction, but can I make a few suggestions
-First off NO dentist or oral surgeon charges for a post op visit following an extraction and if they do find a new dentist, so you are actually spending 7 more dollars than you need to.
-As some people have mentioned improper use of eugenol can cause toxic shock syndrome and then doctor uses Rx antibiotics to rinse the extraction site.
-A dry socket is not the only post op complication that can occur following an extraction and so why not get it checked if it is free
-Finally by going in to the dentist, they will most likely write you a new script to keep you out of pain which is the ultimate goal when treating dry sockets

I had one of my teeth extracted and also tried the clove oil, but most of it leaked out and I ended up swallowing some of it. I am really freaked out, because I googled it and found several articles stating how bad it is if you swallow eugenol - and to call the poison control center immediately. My tounge and throat are numb. Is this really dangerous? It really helped the pain, but I'm afraid to do it again...

I did go back to the dentist. He put this gawd awful packing into the hole my tooth left. He felt better for about 2 hours then was gone! It is a day later and i can still taste the awful medicine but no pain relief. I am at my wits end and will follow everyone else's advice. So far, they are better than the dentists!

I have been calling the dentist everyday since my extration. Here it is a week later and 3 office visits later and still in pain. They have packed my dry socket twice but it only last about a day and a half and back to pain. They said today that there is nothing else they can do but if I want to stop in every couple of days they will repack it. So if I can find something I can do at home and not have to find a babysitter and waste my time and gas to get to the office why not try it?????

The problems occur when the dentists office is closed...late nites and Sundays. Most of us need a temporary fix till we can call at a decent time. Its not the 6 bucks.

Unless you can walk to your dentist, by the time you take time off work and drive every day for a week for care/ maintenence of your dry socket it will have cost you a lot more than $6.99 in time and gas. ( I am finding this out) I got tired of making appointments and getting to work late. This product is a miracle in a box!

Thank you, Dr., for confirming our postings! A few years ago I was going through excruciating, continual pain. When I talked to my dentist on the phone, he simply prescribed more painkillers for me. After a few days, I called him again, complaining that my pain was still there. He didn't seem to understand (and acted as if he didn't believe) that I was still in pain. It seemed as if he thought that I was just trying to get another pain scrip. He finally asked to see me, and diagnosed dry socket. I was then finally on my way to being pain free. I wish more dentists had your attitude (reading home remedy sites and then adding your professional advise), so THANK YOU!
