GO SEE AN ORTHODONTIST, AS YOUR JAWS MAY BE LINED UP WRONG. I work at an orthodontist & a lot of TMD is caused by a 'malocclusion' which translates to a 'bad bite.'

Not to be the stick in the mud, but absolutely do NOT start with an orthodontist. I had braces and because of the poor job done the orthodontist was the one who actually gave me the 'bad bite.' Now, over ten year later, I have chronic pain in my right jaw, visible facial deformity, and it dislocates even if I sneeze too hard. If you suffer from TMJ I would recommend going to a neuromuscular dentist, specifically one that specializes in TMJ. They will be able to help you with treatment and find you a reputable orthodontist (if it's even needed) that deals with TMJ. Just remember that a 'bad bite' is only a part of the problem - it's name says it all temporomandibular joint. The joint is what is the root of the problem.

Happy Feet

There may be some severe cases where an Ortho is warranted, but they are in the business to make money - lots of it. My Ortho referral resulted in a plan to cut my jaw on both sides and re-align. This was not necessary and the TMJ went away over time. The cost of the surgery was around $20,000. Coincidentally, the Ortho had a nice sun tan and a Rolex watch. Not to imply that all are like this, but be careful before you commit to oral surgery before trying EVERYTHING else.

DO NOT GET BRACES...
My daughter had braces because our dentist, a jaw specialist and three orthodontists told us her jaw was misaligned and braces would cure her jaw issues (she already had beautiful teeth, but had severe TMJ). After almost two years with the braces her jaw worsened...a co-worker suggested Physio, which helped but is not allowing for a cure, she has to see the physiotherapist weekly or more otherwise her jaw locks and she has so much discomfort.

Still searching for a fix...

LIKE THE REST SAID DO NOT GO SEE AN ORTHODONTIST.

How about trying an Osteopathic Doctor instead?

They may be able to lead you in the CORRECT direction rather than having MONEY cloud their moral judgment.

Or another less invasive approach: Ie: Acupuncture, Herbal Remedies (teas, herbal pills etc), Massage, Yoga or Stretching. If you have not tried already these have been said to help aid in the relief and even cure TMJ, Of course this isn't the quick fix, but you won't have to worry about putting yourself in a situation you would regret later and potentially cause a lot more turmoil and pain in your life.

Good luck in your search to cure TMJ.

It would be nice if more doctors were in it to help people rather than in it for money and perks.
