17 Comments for the Dry Socket Home Remedy

I had an extraction on this past Tuesday and developed dry socket the very next day - like others have said, the sensations of throbbing pain radiated to surrounding teeth. It was getting unbearable, the pain was driving me crazy. My jaw was locked up and swollen as well.

I went searching for Clove oil and when I didn't find that, I ended up getting the Red Cross brand Toothache Kit. Best thing ever! At my Rite Aid, it was right there in the toothpaste aisle, in the section where you find Orajel and Anbesol. The price of the kit was $7.69.

How I used it was I placed one of the kit's little cotton pellets in the tweezers that come with it, wet the cotton with water first to cut the sting of the Eugenol (the bottle of liquid included in this kit is Eugenol, which is basically Clove Oil and it will sting, be careful), dipped the cotton into the oil and dabbed the socket. If your surrounding teeth are also feeling the pain, dab all over and around them too, I found that helps. ;) It worked for me instantly just by covering the area and other teeth with the oil - I didn't have to worry about packing the socket or anything. The relief lasts a long time for me, I just apply it once or twice a day if I need to.

Bless you all suffering with it, hope you can find the relief that you need, I know I did - and that was by reading your accounts and advice here, so thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Thank you so much. You described just how I am feeling. Went to the CVS and got what worked for you. AMAZING!!!!! Thank you!!!!

the dry socket pain i've been feeling has been absolutely :uNbEaRaBlE: and my oral surgeon hasn't returned any of my calls to his answering service, and my local dentist that referred me won't see me for the condition since he wasn't the dentist that preformed the procedure, so i have been at a loss, out of the mild pain relievers i was prescribed, and in worsening pain as the days drag by... thank you so much for the tip on eugenol! a friend of mine actually happened to have a partial bottle in her medicine cabinet, as her husband uses it when he has a toothache, and it's magic! i have been taking 2500 mg of naproxin every 2-3 hrs. for the pain and it feels like someone punched me in the stomach b/c, of course, it's been taken without food, as i can't eat... now i finally feel relief!
i just used the curved syringe the surgeon gave me to rinse out the affected areas *ALL THREE* and although i didn't see any food particles, i know that i am using the correct procedure so it may have helped in some way, and used a q-tip soaked in the eugenol 85% to swab all three sites, and in just a few minutes, i have so little pain and throbbing, i am actually going to bed for the first time in days.

thankyouthankyouthankyou A mIlLiOn TiMeS!

Thank you so much to everyone who posted about this! I bought the Red Cross kit and was looking for something to irrigate with and found just plain old CVS brand oral antiseptic cleanser because I had been using warm water with salt and all it did was make me gag. This stuff must have peroxide in it because as soon as I squirted it in, the site starting bubbling white junk. I rinsed & repeated a few times and it also seems to have anbesol or some kind of numbing agent in it, because once I had it cleaned out, the pain lessened a lot. Then I used the RC Kit and instant relief!! got a little on my tongue which felt kinda weird. LOL but the pain is almost gone! My jaw & ear are still sore, but I also have strep throat and an ear infection, so who knows if it's related to those. Anyway, thank you so very much to everyone who posted about this wonder product! Hopefully this will be the end of it very soon. How long does it take a dry socket to totally heal??

Thanks to all of you who figured this out! I had a tooth pulled about 7 weeks ago and have been in pain since. Unfortunately when they extracted the tooth they chipped the crown in the tooth in front. I thought the pain I was feeling was a result of the new crown. But after yet another visit to the dentist discovered it was not that tooth at all but the gaping hole behind it. The dental kit was just the ticket! it brought immediate relief and it is still working almost 12 hours later! This truly works and it is an easy fix!

This red cross works SO GREAT! Pain went from a 10 to a 2 in a few minutes. Whoo Hoo, THANKS!!!!!

you have saved my life! The surgeon warned me against smoking & other causes of dry socket, but stubbornly I thought I'd be fine. After going to 'London Drugs' & looking thru the oral hygene aisle, I was almost in tears as I couldn't find this clove oil. Finally, just like the other posts said, it was right where the Orajel was. Thank you SO So much for this, as soon as I got home, I put just 2 drops directly into the hole with a syringe & within minutes the pain was minimized to almost nothing. It is there, but very very mildly. And honestly, getting it on the gum or surrounding area is not that bad, it just tastes like cinnamon hearts! Thanks again, I was getting worried, that some kind of pain I have never experienced. Hope this clove oil lasts a while!
