18 Comments for the Head Lice Home Remedy

There's always a silver lining

I've had long hair down to my waist for 10 years now. Not to be conceited, but I HAD gorgeous, thick hair. My boyfriend's niece's daughter had lice, no one told us, and a week and a half later, I was itching. He checked my hair and lo and behold, I had the little buggers. I went straight to the store and bought RID. Didn't work. I went back and bought NIX. Nope. I did the hardest thing I ever had to do-cut my hair. Not just a trim- I had to cut it to my shoulders. I'm still crying as I type this. I guess I needed a change.. everyone does. But my hair... My long long hair is now gone thanks to an irresponsible mother who won't rid her kids of these homewrecking bugs. So, I came online and this was the first site that came up. I have to say THANK YOU to whoever thought of using Listerine & vinegar. My hair is gone, but so are the bugs and nits. My boyfriend just checked my hair and voila! They're gone! I'm just really upset about my hair. Sorry to vent lol. It's hard!!!

So,if you want to be rid of these things:

Douse hair with Listerine, (I used the off brand)
Wrap hair with a plastic bag(airtight) for 2 hours, then rinse.

Rinse hair thouroghly with vinegar, wrap airtight with a different grocery bag, or garbage bag, saran wrap-whatever.
Leave on for an hour.
Rinse hair, put alot of coconut conditioner (lice hate the smell apparently)
And the MAIN THING people need to be aware of is:

BUY THE METAL NIT COMB!!!
It only cost $6.99 at Walgreens, it's by the shampoo.

I ain't from France but excuse my French.. Those little nix and rid combs aren't worth shet.

Comb & comb & comb in the shower with mucho conditioner and bam - they're gone.

The moral of the story is:

It is not a shame to get lice, it is a shame to keep them & do nothing to get rid of them.

my daughters got lice for the first time from god knows where and i used this treatment tonight.. it works great!!! i only did the listerine part for an hour because the 3 yr old was getting restless but it worked like a charm. I had tried everything else too and nothing worked. going to wash their hair tomorrow with the coconut shampoo and conditioner and then repeat the treatment the next day and I think we will be good!!! Also have all of their bedding and stuffed animals in garbage bags in basement for the next three days and then i will wash them again. wish me luck!!!

MY KIDS HAVE BEEN TREATED TWICE IN PAST 2-3 WKS DUE TO RE-EXPOSURE FROM THEIR COUSINS...CAN'T REALLY PREVENT THIS B/C THEY ALL HAVE TO SIT TOGETHER ON SCHOOL BUS...I WILL BE REQUESTING SEAT CHANGES IF THIS WORKS THOUGH! I USUALLY BUY LICEMD, BUT THEY ARE ALL OUT IN MY AREA, AND EVERYONE IS ON BACKORDER SO NO TELLING HOW LONG IT WILL BE BEFORE RESTOCKED...SO...TRYING THIS STUFF NOW...HOPE TO GOD IT WORKS! I WILL POST A COMMENT AFTER WE ARE ALL DONE AND LET YOU KNOW THE RESULTS. :)

What kind of coconut shampoo do you use for this treatment or does it not really matter as long as it is coconut scented??

I also have 3 daughter who have gotten this from school. My youngest got it first and then now they have all gotten it. I thought we had gotten rid of them but sure enough they are back. I have used RID, NIX, done the Cetaphil method. I can't keep buying the RID & Nix as they are expensive and obviously not working AT ALL!!!!
I am going to try the listerine method as per all the comments it seems to work and we all want to be rid of these stupid buggers. I am going to go and buy some listerine and more vinegar today but wanted to know about the shampoo so I can get that too. Do we get conditioner as well????

I am thankful for these sites and I am hoping that this will FINALLY work!! I am so tired of these things... arrrrggghhhhhhhh

I just came back on the site for the first time since that fateful day in 2008 lol! I'm so glad I could help you guys out! ;) I'm now here to see if any new home remedies were out for my 7 year old daughter. This is her 2nd time catching it ever and it's an absolute nightmare.

I was reading through the newer posts and Tom MacDonald from Oklahoma City, OK says that Orange Mango Suave Smoothers works too. I'm definitely going to try that over the Listerine & vinegar route because the vinegar's smell is so strong. But, it does work.

Happy New Year!

This time... I'll be.. bulletproof!!!!

Oh and to answer your question (sorry;)

'What kind of coconut shampoo do you use for this treatment or does it not really matter as long as it is coconut scented??'

It does not matter what kind of coconut shampoo you get, as long as it's coconut scented. Also, to answer your other question about using just shampoo or conditioner too, yes. I would definitely use coconut conditioner also. Anything at this point just to make sure you're completely and totally ridding your life of these pests. lol!
