There are several things that help. A hot epsom salt bath to soothe and alleviate itching, apple cider vinegar is good for the pain and also for yeast infections which you can also douche with diluted as well. Hydrogen Peroxide which is said to be antiviral but so far I just noticed it to be a little soothing. Tea Tree essential oil is good for the symptoms and also seems to lessen the time span. That's my favorite remedy so far. Baking soda paste is also good to stop itching. All these are great in a hot bath for GH and a large array of other health benefits. Everyone should try it. Lemon Balm essential oil is said to be the best. Studies were done in Germany I guess and not only did it rid the symptoms but would stop or cure the outbreaks in just a couple days. That's something I'm definately going to have to try.

BAD IDEA! I tried this and it burned like a mofo! I hadn't had an outbreak in over 5 years and I'm 20 now. I recently had my second outbreak and it is really irritated but nothing like my first time. Well when I put the baking soda on I almost puked it hurt so bad. It felt just as bad and my first outbreak and some! I don't think you tried this on yourself. It may relieve itchyness because your in pain!

I was just curious, how do you use the Tea Tree Oil? Do you use it in a bath, or do you put it on a cotton ball and put it on the sores? I was just wondering, please let me know.

Thanks

the lemon balm is great. if you can't get the oil, go to a supplement/ health food store and get the pills (i paid $10 for 400mg capsules..brand is solaray). i've just made a little oil mixture, vinaigrette thing with evoo (about 1 tsp) and broken a capsule of the lemon balm (it's pure, with only a harmless magnesium stearate) and pour in it there. i use a little cornstarch to thicken sometimes, but not always. i apply it on my area when i feel tingling, and let it sit for at least 20 minutes, usually before i get ready to shower. then i just clean it off. and reapply in the morning before i brush my teeth and stuff. after that, i wipe it clean with a wet wash cloth.
works great. rarely get OBs if at all. it's very soothing and painless. try to use it at the first sign of prodrome (the tingling feeling).

I agree with only using the epsom salt and unfiltered apple cider vinegar, that is the only thing that has helped me - start when you feel the first set of tingling to let you know THEY R COMING. Don't try the baking soda that sounds scary looking at all the other comments. But I will suggest using a diaper rash cream after you get out the tub of epsom salt and apple cider vinegar.
