Swimmer's Ear:

It is important to know what is causing an ear ache, as different causes should be treated differently.

Swimmer's Ear is a fungal infection, and almost any type of fungus is quickly and effectively treated with vinegar.

The Remedy:

Mix white vinegar 50/50 with clean water. Drop into ear, and wiggle ear to ensure it goes all the way in.

This provides almost instant results, especially if the infection is caught early. My son woke with Swimmer's Ear one night, and after a quick vinegar treatment and about fifteen minutes for the pain to subside somewhat, went back to sleep and by morning his ear was completely well.

You may mix vinegar with rubbing alcohol instead of water, but the alcohol will sting and is not necessary. The vinegar does a fine job of creating a pH environment that is completely unfriendly to fungus, and the little bit of extra water will run out and not cause further problems as long as you dry your ear carefully.

Side note: Vinegar of various sorts and in various concentrations is wonderful for other fungal infections as well. I rub it on my scalp for dandruff, for instant results. I pour apple cider vinegar in the bath for vaginal yeast infections, for instant relief and quick recovery. For fungus, vinegar works better and faster than any store-bought or prescription remedy. But only for fungus--for bacterial infections, vinegar can actually make the problem worse. So be sure you know what you're dealing with!

How do you know what you have? Fungal or bacterial?

This didn't work for me at all. I probably didn't have the right kind of infection for this remedy I only tried it because It was the only thing on this list that I had, and I haven't been in the water lately, just had a sinus kind of cold, and then this horrible ear ache out of nowhere. So I used the vinegar/water, and waited about half an hour and got no relief. Then I decided to try canola oil (since I don't have oliveoil), I heated it in the microwave for about 25 seconds until it was lukewarm and put it in my ear, it was soothing right away and after about 20 min. it felt a lot better, enough that I was able to fall asleep and when I woke up an hour later it felt fine. I also used the rice sock/bag someone else suggested and that helped a lot too.

I tried this for my ear. I do not have pain but have fluid and can't hear properly out of that ear. I thought at first that there was some improvement but an hour later I still have fluid in my ear.The rice sock was good it holds the heat pretty well, I thought it would encourage draining, but since no improvement in my ear it must just provide comfort.

Thanks for the tips. My wife got an awful Earache infection or ear ache, and I mixed 50%water and 50% apple vinegar and she had instant relief in her ear. We used a dropper and I dropped 3 drops in her ear and she felt better. We did it again 3 more times after 3 minutes of letting the solution sit in her ear. Thank you so much for the advice to help us relieve the ear pain. I would definitely recommend this. Mike, Iowa

What a blessing to know about this remedy - - saved me a trip to the After Care clinic and avoided use of antibiotics which my daughter had already been on earlier this month for a different infection (bacterial). I left the solution in her ear for 5 minutes, drained, and after the second time my daughter felt relief. Thank U for this site and its contributors!
