I have suffered with leg cramps that wake me up out of a deep sleep for years. Usually this happens in the early morning hours. I have noticed that the only way I can stop the cramps is to have a bowel movement, and what do you know, every time this happens, I really need to have a bowel movement. I have searched the web over and over to see if anyone else has made this connection, but to no avail. I would love to know the scientific/medical reason a full bowel causes such excruciating leg cramps.

I periodically experience leg cramps in the morning as I wake up, It was suggested to me to dissolve a teaspoon of pink salt in a quart of water and drink it. It did reverse some constipation and I've not had any cramps since. Don't know why exactly but glad.

Wow! You are the first person I've heard make this connection but it has been my observation also. My leg pain/cramp is connected to my bowel movement. Magnesium helps but seems like I'm missing something else. I don't have any answers yet but wanted you to know it is very connected to bowel movement.

I also now associate leg cramps with constipation. I suffer from both. I've worked in medical publishing of years, including as a publisher, writer, and editor and have researched nocturnal leg cramps during these years. Nothing has been published that has been at all useful. I'm really interested now in the notion of connecting cramps with constipation. IT sort of makes sense.

In re to bowel movements and relief, I think some of us have a nerve that is near the end of the line in the colon that can cause constipation because ive been half crippled with diffivulty walking before. Then i poop and i can walk. Somewhere in allnof these ideas is the answer

I read this morning that nerve damage or spinal stenosis can be a reason. For me, I don't think I drink enough water. I also suspect I'm low on the magnesium. I have an elderly friend who swears by the "Amish leg cramp cure" in tablet form (under the tongue" which makes me wonder if I couldn't find a homeopathic med at Earth Fare for this.

Hi, I was researching how to get rid of a severe leg cramp and stumbled upon your comment. I had to laugh. At that exact moment I had to use the throne. My leg felt better. No you are not the only one. Thanks for sharing :-D

I think you are onto something. I had never made that connection before, but you are right. I normally take a Tbsp of pickle juice or mustard for the leg cramps, but I just realized that I do end up on the commode each time, also.

I suffer frequent leg cramps also. I find that if I pee when I feel a cramp coming on or even mid cramp, I feel the cramp pain leaving almost in direct proportion to the urine leaving my body. EVERYTIME!! I'm embarrassed to admit it but I now keep a jar do my urine bedside for quicker pain relief.
