To prevent and fight constipation, you need to take into consideration the following recommendations:

Eat a well-balanced diet with plenty of fiber. Good sources of fiber are fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole-grain bread and cereal (especially bran). Fiber and water help the colon pass stool.
Make sure you drink enough fluids. Most adults should try to drink between 8 and 10 glasses of water or noncaffeinated beverages each day. Avoid alcoholic beverages and large intake of caffeine, which can increase dehydration. If you have heart failure or kidney failure, talk to your doctor about what amount of fluid is right for you.
Avoid foods that contain white flour, white sugar and other processed foods. Some people may need to avoid milk, as dairy products may be constipating for them.
Exercise regularly!
Schedule time each day for a bowel movement (after breakfast, for example). Establishing a daily routine may help. Take your time, do not be in a hurry, and most importantly, never force the bowel movement! You can give yourself hemorrhoids or anal fissures that eventually narrow the anal opening, causing constipation.
Move your bowels when you feel the urge! People sometimes suppress the urge to have a bowel movement because they’re busy or have an erratic schedule, or because they don’t want to use public bathrooms. If at all possible, heed the call when you feel it.
If needed, use a very mild stool softener or laxative. Do not use laxatives for more than two weeks without calling your doctor, as laxative overuse can aggravate your symptoms.

Fish Oil. Omega-3 fatty acids are thought to play a role in a large number of bodily functions, including digestion. Fish oil is a rich source of these fatty acids, so take it as a supplement, or include fish such as salmon, mackerel, halibut, sardines, tuna and herring in your diet.

Psyllium Seeds. Mix one to two teaspoons of psyllium seeds into a cup of hot water. Let it sit for two hours, add lemon and honey, then drink.

Senna is the mother of all laxatives. A tincture is the easiest way to take his herb. Usually 20 to 40 drops at bedtime is sufficient. It’s also efficient in the form of tea.
Prunes. Prunes (dried plums) act as a mild laxative, stimulating muscles to push waste through the large intestine. Five prunes provide about 3 grams of fiber, but because prune juice is equally effective as a laxative, researchers doubt that fiber is the key. More likely, the effect is due to prunes’ high content of sorbitol, a sugar alcohol.
