i know this works on babies for sure but sometimes on older children and adluts too. when a baby is cutting teeth you rub oragel on his/her teeth right? well my cousin had a baby and for some reason decided to use benadryl and it works!! there must be some sort of anti-inflamatory in the solution that calms inflamed gums. Rub all over baby's gums with your finger tip or the inflamed area of your own mouth, usually takes the pain right away.

I have a 6mo old daughter and as far as teething, I rub a LITTLE (only dab my finger in the bottle and then shake it off) Jack daniels on her gums and that helps her calm down. Doesn't make her sleep, only helps with the pain. I know that you people will probably say that I am abusing my child giving her alcohol, but I don't care. My parents used it on all four of us children and we turned out 100% healthy. There is nothing wrong with using home remedies! My mother-in-law thinks that every time she cries I should take her to the Dr and find out why rather than do a little home experimenting to help her. Just go with your gut and you will sooner or later find something that works for your child, and then if not, then it's time to consult someone. Every parent is different and has EXTREMELY different views on EVERYTHING!!! Good luck! My teething adventure has just started so I understand the frustration!

I have tried EVERYTHING on my little girl and NOTHING worked. I tried cold stuff, baby orajel, humphrey's, the whole 9. You name it and I have done tried it. I came online looking for something else to try and I just so happened to have some children's benedryl so I tried this and OMGGGGG Thank you sooo much for the idea. She almost immediately quit crying and started jibber jabbering and giggling at me. This was a life saver.

I have a 9 month old son who just cried himself to sleep after using Tylenol, Motrin, Orajel and Humphry's. Nothing worked until he finally exhausted himself. He just finished chemotherapy and has had surgery to have a tumor resected. In the cancer clinic, they used Benedryl for an allergic reaction that he had. It didn't put him to sleep at all. I will be trying this FIRST thing in the morning! I might even go buy some tonight!!!

Althought this is old I'm posting :)
my daughters dr told me to stick my finger in the benadryl bottle and get it wet (not dripping) and rub it on her gums (she was 7 months at the time with 4 teeth coming through up top). So I did it and it works! It numbs the gums and no it did NOT knock her out at all!!! Actually she took her normal 30 min nap.

My daughter is teething and its ridiculous because it is 11:00 at night and she was still wide awake hurting so bad. So I needed a home remedy to be able to do because my 3 year old is sleeping and don't want to have to wake her to go to the store for orajel or anything else. So when I saw the benadryl I said you know what its worth a shot. And instantly she stopped fussing and is now soundly sleeping away. I would have done whiskey but I don't have any. Thank you for posting this! I am soooooo glad it worked!

I took my 1 year old daughter, Adriana, to the doctors yesterday for an ear check (issues with ear infections) and she asked about how my daughter was sleeping. Told her that Adriana has been having very restless nights (getting up about 7-10 times each night). She looked in Adrianas mouth and saw that she had 4 molars coming in at once. She told me to rub some childrens benedryl on the gums around where each molar is coming in. I did question her about giving a baby benedryl and she said that Adriana wont have any of the side effects from the medicine...its just used to numb the gums and give her some relief. Went home and right before Adriana went to sleep I dipped my pinky in the benedryl and shook it off then rubbed it on each sides of the gum where her molars are popping through. It worked like a charm! I haven't gotten a full nights sleep since before she was born because of colic (her colic was from midnight to 6 am!!), teething and ear infections. Last night I got to sleep right through without having to get up with her once! I saw such a difference in her mood the next day too. Usually she is soo cranky in the morning until she takes her nap because she has such broken up sleep. Today she woke up very upbeat and happy. Tried it again tonight after she fell asleep and she's been sleeping for a few hours now without a peep. YAY.
You people who say that parents who RUB childrens benedryl on the gums are insane. If you think about it how much are they actually ingesting? I would rather RUB a little bit of benedryl on my childs gums then have to constantly give her motrin or tylenol all the time for pain relief from teething.

Just because a little worked on your mouth doesn't make it right to put on a baby! You can probably drink one cup of alcohol and it doesn't affect you but obviously if you gave one cup to a baby they would get quite ill! Dosage on an adult and baby are completly different! DUH. A little bit can be a lot for a child. This medicine is not intended to be used for teething, if it was then it would say so on the bottle.

.....benadryl is used for allergic reactions. a histamine blocker...baby's gums don't swell because of an allergic reaction, they swell bc a tooth is trying to push through it. benadryl just knocks them out, and it doesn't take much...their tiny little infants. so it's pretty much pointless and giving your baby a drug that he/she absolutely does not need. and when the time comes that they DO need benadryl (bee sting, ALLERGIES) they'll be immune to it from you giving it to them everytime they cut a tooth. i don't think it's a good idea, and yeahh they used to give us whiskey as children, i remember drinking 'hot totties' well, and that's probably why so many people are messed up now!!

My physician recommended it as well because tylenol wasnt working. You only rub a small amount on the gums. Your not giving anywhere near enough to make a baby drowsy. It does work too!
