This (anal sphincter muscle spasms and cramping) happens to me once every month or two, usually while sleeping, and it wakes me up. If I do nothing it can take 15 to 20 minutes to go away and is quite painful.

I have found that putting pressure on the anus, such as by sitting on a tennis ball or on the edge of, for example, the toilet seat, for a few minutes causes the spasm/cramping to stop an then I can go back to sleep.

I can stop an attack within a minute by always leaving a heating pad plugged in at my bedside. The moment I awaken, with the twinge that tells me the spasm is starting, I fold the heating pad in half lengthwise, and puts it firmly as possible between my buttox. A low setting of the heat usually stops the pain within a minute or two at most. I write this, at approx. 5 a.m., after being awakened with a spasm.
