Doctors will usually try to put you on a low-fiber diet. The exact opposite is required to cure yourself of colitis. Doctors will try to keep your colitis going so that they can continue to keep you on the drugs and steroids, and possibly end up hospitalizing you, or killing you, which makes a killing for them. Steroids may decrease inflammation, but they also decrease your ability to fight infections and can possibly take such a toll on your immune system that you become dangerously ill or even die. Doctors do not tell you this. I almost died of blood poisoning because I was on steroids and was unable to fight the infection. It wasn't until I got out of the hospital and got off of all medication that I began to heal. If you do not go to the root of the problem and do not change your diet and keep it changed, if you choose to remain on the medication and steroids, then you are guaranteed to remain ill or have frequent flare-ups.

Some of these have been said before, but I will attest that they do cure colitis: lots of fiber, raw fruits and vegetables, psyllium seed/husk, lots of water, bromelain, slippery elm, acidophilus/probiotics, enzymes, and reduced stress.

I agree 100% with this. The only thing I want to add is that raw veggies may be harsh for people who are just starting to heal. They may be better digested in fresh juice form.

I have Crohn's Disease, and I have been living with it for 19 years. I've had 5 surgeries for abcesses and fistulas. I've also had 7 colonoscopys.

I've been on every medication known to man for it. Remicaide, Asacol, 6 mp, Predisone, and many types of antibiotics. My insurance wouldnt pay for Humeria, but considering the side effects to it, guess it was a good thing.

After taking Predisone, now I have bone lose and my arthritis is worse (I am only 35 years old). Not to mention that the steroid effected my teeth and gums. I was on this steroid for over a year...30mg. Never again!

If you are having an attack of colitis, do NOT eat any raw vegetables. raw vegetables are roughage and they are harder for you to digest, making your pain worse.

Avoid dairy products. If you do, make sure to take vitamins. Drink plenty of water. Your body loses a lot of fluid having colitis. It's just so important that you do not dehydrate.

Keep a record of the foods that trigger an attack. I'm still searching for ways to deal with Crohns. I've had 2 GI's tell me that basically since my body has rejected any meds for Crohns, that I'm SOL. After 5 gastrointestinal specialists, I'm inclined to believe them.

Well, I actually have to disagree. If you suffer from colitis, a high fiber diet will make symptoms WORSE. I have had colitis for 12 years and only get relief from a low-fiber diet.

I agree, the high fiber diet is the last thing you want to eat with an inflammed colon. Insoluble fiber is very irritating. But soluble fiber on the other hand has been my savior. It is non-irritating to inflammed bowels, actually it is soothing. It is a prebiotic that feeds the good bacteria and helps restore balance in the gut. The good bacteria then produce butyrate as a waste product that actually feeds the colon wall cells and it brings down the ph which inhibits harmful bacteria and yeasts from growing and thriving.
The only side effect from taking it is gas at first as the beneficial bacteria are growing again. It is present in beans and other foods naturally, and it can also be taken in supplement form. I personally take guar gum and inulin, and I am not on any medications. I agree with the post that I am commenting to, that the medications just mask the symptoms, not treat the cause, by shutting down the immune system which makes the body vulnerable to everything. I can eat what ever I want now, I just stay away from sugar and processed foods because they are unhealthy, and are what gave me these symptoms in the first place. I was diagnosed with Crohn's.

I feel like, in general, physicians don't push themselves through years of sleepless nights, mentally and physically punishing, simply to make money, never mind the Hippocratic Oath to do 'only for the good' of the patients.

Just as a by the way yall. They won't likely know your body as well as you should but they aren't out to exploit your health.....

This is horrendous advice. Raw vegetables and high fiber make colitis flares worse, not better. Eating vegetable roughage while you have intestinal ulcers is like rubbing sandpaper across an open wound.

I have had colitis for almost 15 years. I have found that what I eat makes little difference, though if I eat a lot of refined foods during a flare, I feel better, and if I eat too many fruits and vegetables in remission, I can actually develop intestinal bleeding after about a week.

The thing that helped me was having my doctor remove all my polyps. I've been pretty good ever since. I had 13 of them, clustered in the last foot of my bowel. I've had only mild, occasional flares in the seven years since he did that. I would recommend you all ask your docs about this, if you have polyps.

As for doctors not wanting to cure you so you'll keep coming back...that is pretty effing stupid. A doctor that doesn't help or cure his patients won't get any referrals, and the patients he does have will leave him in search of someone who will fix them for good. And there'll always be more sick people in the pipeline behind today's sick people, so it's not like he loses money if he heals you. That's just stupid thinking for borderline paranoid idiots with delusions of grandeur. Knock it off. Your terrible advice could hurt people.

although i lack years of being afflicted of colitis it isnt a conspiracy it is a fact that homeopathic remedys do more than the damn doctors!!! they give you drugs to hide the symptoms and mask the pain which by the way is in no way beneficial for your health, furthermore the hypocratic oath???? cmon just empty words! my wife was diagnosed and in the hospital for 2 years with IBS and went to a nutrionalist for one week which he diagnosed her with wheat allergen my advice to you is see a nutrionalist who will prescribe all natural organic supplements and then you will be healed like i am now! or google colitis every night or throw your money at 'doctors'up to you!

More IGNORANCE. You had a lousy doctor. The first thing my medical doctor did when I went in with colitis was test me for celiac disease. You don't need a nutritionist for that. Any reputable doctor will test you for that. Just because you're too stupid to know how to pick a decent doctor or get a second opinion for two whole years doesn't mean you get to indict the entire industry.

By the way, IBS doesn't remotely resemble colitis. Not even close. In the hospital for two years with IBS? Can we say 'drama queen?' I'm calling, uh, BS.

I would also like to know how your nutritionist diagnosed your wife with a wheat allergy. The only way to diagnose any allergy is through RAST or blood testing. I doubt your nutritionist did either one, because s/he'd have to be a licensed doctor to do those tests. If those tests didn't happen, then your wife is seeing a quack who's latched on to the whole trendy 'wheat allergy' BS. Only 1 percent of the country actually has a wheat allergy. It's very rare. As for the diet and treatments, it's a fact that the placebo effect works great for IBS, which is an emotional rather than physical illness anyway. All in the head, you know

It is utter BS that homeopathic remedies do more than the 'damn doctors.' I spent years with colitis, seeing every conceivable type of professional, from mainstream docs to homeopaths to acupuncturists. My 'damn doctor' saved my life with a simple, life-altering surgery. My homeopath gave me useless bottles of alcohol that allegedly had (BS) molecules of whatever in them. Those bottles did nothing for me.

There are conventional drugs that merely mask symptoms, but there are also conventional drugs that actually clear up the disease. You have no idea what you're talking about. As you said yourself, you haven't been there.

If homeopathy worked, Pfizer would be bottling it and selling it for trillions of dollars.

If you're treating with homeopathy, then you deserve the pain and suffering you'll get. And if you really loved your wife and were a responsible spouse, you'd get her legitimate care instead of taking her to some BS artist who's diagnosed her with the BS Disease of the Month.

I totaly agree with the Last comment, I have had Ulcerative Colitis for the last 6 years, and have experienced a lot of bleeding in thattime, Diet and natural remedies can help in some cases and may keep you in remission longer. However if you visit a good specialist in this field I see one of the best in Australia as Its free to me, They will diagose you condition correctly and use the correect medication to clear it up, mine also reccomends certain hebal medicines to go along with it. Avoiding the Doctors and telling people to stay awy from them is just plain stupid, Aloevera juice and Boswellia extract help. Mine normally clears up with a good short ( 6 weeks) strong dose of Predisone. I know it it a bad drug with a lot of side effects, but I don't seem to experience any side effects, plus I would prefer to have the side effects then the pain and discomfort of bleeding constantly from my rear end.
