6 Comments for the Ear Congestion Home Remedy

My ear was congested from a wicked cold, and I didn't have a lot of the ingredients for some of the remedies on here, and a lot of them didn't work (DO NOT plug your nose and blow, not only is it painful, it can seriously damage your eardrum. Common sense, people). All I did was boil somewater, pour it into a cup with a ridiculous amount of sea salt in it, and hold your ear over the steam until it cools off. I did this a couple of times, then I simply mixed more sea salt and warm water, and sucked it up my nose with a spoon (very classy) and rinsed my sinuses. Worked like a charm. No more pain and it doesn't sound like I'm in a giant plastic bubble
anymore, which is a plus. Try it, peeps.

Can I ask how much of the salt water you inhaled?

I used to get ear infections regularly from surfing in dirty water. Now if I feel any sort of ear discomfort or pain I hold my nose and blow gently like I am trying to pop my ears at high altitude. I have not had an ear infection in 10+ years since I have been doing this. Not sure where you got your info about not doing this. I actually had a doctor recommend it when I went to the emergency room for a serious middle ear infection (the last ear infection I ever had).

a 'ridiculous amount'. I've had the same thing, I think. I had a sore throat and other flu-like symptoms and my glands were slightly swollen. I went to the doctor to get antibiotics thinking I was getting my annual throat infection which usually comes in November/December. However a throat infection didn't develop just general cold symptoms stayed. After being out drinking 5 nights in a row in the freezing cold (I'm 20, at university and I had friends over to visit) my ears started to become congested and I had that similar plastic bubble sound which surrounds everthing I do. I've had fuzziness in the ears and feeling quite dizzy and unbalanced. I'm also deaf in one ear and have experienced vertigo before because of ear congestion and I really want to get rid of this before the vertigo comes!!! Did you experience any dizziness with your congestion? I've been told to try olive oil but I'm currently boiling my kettle to try this salt water remedy.

I just did this, while I was in office, its brilliant coz it WORKS :D Thanks so much for sharing it...

If you use about 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt with 1/8 tsp of baking soda mixed in 2 cups of boiled then cooled to warm water.

Before trying to 'suck salt water' up one's nose - take care not to make the solution too salty, or it will burn.
