If your toenail gets really thick and yellow, it is a form of fungus.
Take a nail file and run it over the surface of the toenail. Rub it both horizontally and laterally to make uneven grooves in the top of the nail.
Then rub Vick's Vapor Rub into the top of the toenail. The grooves will help keep the Vick's on the toenail. Do this for several days/nights in a row as often as you can.
The Eucalyptus in the Vick's will kill the fungus on the nail faster than any store-bought anti-fungal available !

Today is Saturday, June 7, 2008. All my toenails look healthy except for my left large toe. I had a horrible fracture of my left ankle 4 years ago. For some reason that nail started getting yellow and brittle, like it was dead. After reading all the comments with bleach, vicks, and listerine, I think I too will try it. I'll post in a month to let you know what happens.

Have had very thick yellow toenails on right foot and sometimes on left foot for last 10 years. For some reason the left foot clears up and nails look fine for a few months but fungus always comes back. I've tried polishing them to make tham look better in order to wear sandals... they only look like thick toenails with polish on top, very ugly. I just by chance found this web site and am hopeful that maybe I can get rid of this fungus or at least keep it under control and have nice toenails again! I will start the Vicks treatment tonight and if I don't see any difference in the next 2 weeks will try the bleach. Hope to report back with healthy toenails!

I too have toenail fungus on both big toes. The right toe is about black. I will try the VVR first, then the listerine, then the bleach...lets hope one of them works, I want to get a french pedicure one day!!!

I received a chain mail with natural remedies. Have had a terrible problem on my big toes for years. I think it started when, as a child, a heavy object fell on my toes. an RN removed both nails and they grew back just fine. It wasn't until later that they got quite bad. SO.. I started with Lamisil.. forget it...then I was perscribed sporanox.. which, after reading the side effects I threw away. A pedicurist recommended FUNGUS FIX I think by OPC...I used it for a year, going back to the pedicurist to cut back and really clean the nail with vinegar. I was told to clean the nail with vinegar and apply the Fungus Fix. Things went well. But now, two years later the fungus is back with a vengeance. My dad's podiatrist said there is nothing I can do about it. But my nails did grow back after the Fungus fix.. so.. NOW WHAT.. Went to get a pedicure and she removed all the lose skin under the nail... I could not believe this was back AGAIN... SO I got the email and started using the Vicks...I will soak with vinegar, wash and clean feet and nails.. apply the Vicks and put on cotton socks. It's summer now so I have been using nail polish. I hope it doesn't damage the process but it is just too hot not to wear sandals. I will post back with results which I hope to have (positive ones) within the next two months. I was also told that when your body has to continually fight a fungus, anywhere in the body, you are more susceptible to fatigue and other infections.. as if yellow toes weren't enough... Thanks for all the suggestions and remedies.

i NEVER would have believed it. I swabbed the toenails with 99% rubbing alcohol and smeared on Vicks vapor rub. I was skeptical, but desperate. My nails were thick, yellow and so curled in and caused me so much pain. I was so embarrassed to show my feet! I was schdueled for surgery to have my large toe nails removed. My other toenails were becoming affected as well. I have tried perscription medications and Penlac (80% Ciclopirox) drops - with No results. within 1 week of using the alcohol and VICKS I noticed the nail thicken and thetoe nail fell off!! under was pink new nail!!! I would recommend this. I will continue using this easy and VERY inexpensive and SAFE option.

I had absolutely NO luck with Vicks whatsoever. I must have some alien form of nail fungus.

I've had what I thought was nail fungus for just shy of 20 years now. I tried every remedy under the sun and even had a doc who wanted to cut my toenails off. Well, after years of wondering how I would ever get get this behind me, I learned what it actually was. I went to a Dermatologist for what I though was an unrelated infection on the palms of my hands. They itched terribly and I thought, did I spread this fungus to my hands and where else could I have spread it? I learned that what I had wasn't fungus at all but Psoriasis. I was put on a topical steroid cream which worked for my palms and also for my toenails. Now that I can wear flip flops again, I don't because I'm just too old now. Food for thought. Research Psoriasis, it may be what ails you.

AMAZING! I have only has the fungus for about 6 weeks but already my nail was badly discolored and starting to bump and ridge. I filed the surface of the nail as suggested, then soaked for 20 minutes in cider vinegar. Applied vapor rub and wore a sock overnight. After only one day the nail looks a lot better! Will keep this up and post again in a few weeks. Also heard tea tree oil in a nightly application will prevent fungus from returning after it is driven back but as a 'cure' takes too long to really be effective.

I tried tea tree oil and it did nothing but cause my nails to get dryer and chip more. So far one toenail has fallen off, grown back, in, turned yellow and is about to fall off again; the other big toe and the one next to it caught it, I've had three cuts turn into skin yeast. I also have one fingernail that has split down the nail to the cuticle (three years ago) so I need to keep clear polish on it to grow th split out, but I swear I see fungus under there too. All of this started, I think, when I got thrush while breastfeeding my first kiddo and the medicine at the time never really got rid of it. So now it has spread everywhere. I am going to try soaking in original listerine and putting vicks on top for the nails and will report back.

Does anyone know of anything over-the-counter I can take for the systemic yeast? Yogurt doesn't help and is in fact not my friend (I have major intestinal issues when I eat it0)

Thanks!

I just found this site and tried the Vicks & Listerine(orig. yellow, not blue) last night, Jan. 20, 2009. I thought I would combine both methods. My big toe nail had a fungi about a year ago and I went to the podiatrist and she cut half of my toenail off on each side of the toenail and gave me a prescrip. and lots of OTC stuff to try. It went away a couple a months later. This time the fungus seemed to be involving even more of the toenail making it yellowish and lifted off the bed. Last night I put Listerine on a cottonball and band-aided to my toe for 30 minutes, then dried and filed the tops of my toenail horizontally and vertically, then put vicks on it and covered loosely with a band aid so as to not mess the bedding up. This morning, it just looked amazing. It seemed so faded out that no one but me could see it. I repeated this morning and this afternoon just did the Listerine treatment and it looks great. I'll keep you posted, but this is working faster and a whole lot cheaper!!
