My child has regular attacks. Keep a humidifier in your house because you need cool air, not warm air to help. Dry air is the cause of the attack. If you are in your car open a window. If you do not have a humidifier and your child is having severe breathing problems, take them to the emergency room . There they will get a breathing treatment. On in severe cases will you need surgery.

I've been told this by a doctor -- our son has regular attacks, and we've taken him in to a walk-in freezer, or outdoors in the winter. It works like night and day!

When it is really bad, the doctor prescribes mild steriods to reduce swelling.

Another good old remedy is to chop up an onion into small bits, place in the middle of a tea towel and roll ot up so the onion does not come out, wrap around the childs neck (not too tight or loose) and tie the two ends with an elastic. It really does break up congestion! I just did it last night and my boy slept all night. My grandmother told me that many years ago my uncle had severe croup and this old doctor told her about it. She said it saved them many trips to the hospital!
