11 Comments for the Head Lice Home Remedy

Pure rubbing alcohol, Hair dye(it has alcohol in it), and vinegar work great. Baby oil is great for nits but you will have to wash your hair a lot to get the baby oil out.

I agree my child had gotten lice from school last year and after spending hundreds of dollars on lice shampoo I found the only thing that worked was alcohol and baby oil.

Now I know where my step daughter's mentally ill mother gets her sickening advice. Pouring rubbing alcohol on a child's head is CHILD ABUSE. There are chunks missing from this child's scalp, because of all of these sick so called home remedies. Dawn dishwashing detergent should only be applied after placing an extremely thick substance, such as Petroleum Jelly, not mayonnaise. Perhaps they should rename this site torture methods for kids. Get off of your lazy behinds and pick the lice out of their hair.

Obviously, the last comment pertaining to child abuse for using alcohol and baby oil, this person has not spent hours upon hours of picking and combing their child’s hair. It is just as abusive to expect a child to remain still long enough for relentless hours of torturing through combing. My daughter had hair down to the middle of her back which now is much shorter. I have used chemical and all sorts of things to resolve her condition. Frankly, the only thing that has worked is RID Mousse followed by a routine of jelling my daughters hair daily. The .99 non-alc. jell resembles dirty hair to the lice which the lice don't prefer. Even though my daughter is not as attractive for the time being she won't deal with sitting and sitting as the pain staking routine of pickin had occurred in the past. Just a thought for those who want to save a little money, flea foggers have the same chemical as the RID spray. Also there are a few back yard canned foggers for flying insects that also have a higher percentage of the active ingredients that are known to kill lice. I wish everyone success with dealing with these creatures.

I agree, the person who thinks this treatment is child abuse needs to good dose of lice that lasts for months until they go insane and then let's see what they consider child abuse to be.

A mixture of alcohol, vinegar, & lime juice killed the lice in my daughters hair in 10 minutes. I saturated my 11 year old daughters' dry hair with this mixture & covered with a bag for ten minutes, without rinsing, I used a nit comb & started combing out dead lice immediately. She only complained of the smell. This is my second go around, the first time I fought it for 3 months straight. I used everything - Mayo, Nix, Rid, Oil, Sprays, etc. The oil & Mayo worked best on her hair but I couldn't get it out of the house. I was almost ready to go to a motel for 2-3 weeks when a friend said try this...

Sprinkle seven dust over the carpet, mattresses & furniture and let it sit for 2 hours (You will have to leave the house & make sure you turn off your A/C, if you forget you need to change all your A/C filters) Vaccum everywhere you put seven dust & throw away the bag. Stinks up the house but it works, no reinfestation. Takes approximately 2 weeks to get the smell out. I wish I tried that first.

To the lady who said child abuse... I hope you never have to endure lice the way the rest of us has. My child cried everynight when I said it was time to pick her hair out. Remember I fought this for 3 months, 'lazy' is the opposite of what a parent does when trying to rid lice. Be thankful you have not experienced a true case of head lice. You will never work so hard in your life to get rid of it.

Vinegar is all you need it kills the lice and makes the eggs let go of the hair so they can be combed out. I put the vinegar in a spray bottle and used hair clips to section off the hair. Then I sprayed the vinegar on and started combing. I also had a bowl of vinegar to dip the comb in, you could see the lice, nits and eggs floating the bowl.

The only thing I have found that works on my daughter is baby oil. I keep all of my boy's heads shaved and keep a bottle of baby oil handy. I was told as I am pregnant I can not use anything but rid and since that doesn't work I tried baby oil and now we have been lice free for months. We put the oil in before bed and washed our hair twice with normal shampoo when we got up. We repeated nightly for two weeks because I don't think it kills the eggs so we just kept repaeating untill we were clean.

That woman who thinks using rubbing alcohol in a childs hair is child abuse, maybe she needs to have the bugs in her hair and right along with all the eggs they lay and then she will know how it feels, she apparently she don't know, so she really shouldn't be saying anything cause my 4 girls had it and nothing works but this alcohol remedy does. She must not know how these kids feel about having to sit there for hours upon hours to get their hair done, its no picnic. They don't like it just as much as we don't like having to do it all the time, so whoever that woman is, if you don't know don't say NOTHING!!!!!

The lady should also try going to the doctor where your told to coat your child with toxic poision to get rid of them!
