Mark

After TEN YEARS of fighting the toenail fugus I finally WON!!

TREATMENT BENEFITS
* No oral drugs or injections
* Easy
* Application of treatment takes very little time (especially compared to the other treatments I've read)

WHAT WORKED
Decolorized Iodine (also known as clear iodine - non staining).

WHAT YOU NEED - GENERALLY
You need an antiseptic. The infection is on the skin under the nail. There are a lot of antispectics out there but they have to be 'thin' enough to get through the nail (liquid surface tension, viscosity).

WHY DECOLORIZED IODINE WORKS
Iodine absorbs in the nail in SECONDS. It also leaves NO staining - completely clear.

Other antiseptics - Bleach(chlorine), Peroxide (including Hydrogen and urine), Chlorhexidine Gluconate (hospital skin cleaner) are too thick even if you soak your toes in them (although chlorine can make a little difference)

WHERE TO GET IT
Not widely available. I found it at CVS for $5, but it was not at Walgreens or Walmart for me. Mine came in a brown bottle even though the liquid is clear and dries clear.

TREATMENT
A treatment consisted dipping a q-tip in the bottle and painting your infected nails and the skin that is close to the nail. Repeat (double dipping's ok!) until all infected nails are saturated (it can take ten times). Then leave to dry (takes less than a minute).

THAT'S IT! In less than a half an hour you might feel the skin under your nails tingling. You know it's working!!

If it hurts at anytime while applying, you have hit a pocket of infection. Stop and wait the next day to try again.

I STRONGLY recommend that you do this in the bathtub. Until the iodine is absorbed, it smells like cat urine; but that's only for a few seconds. But if you spill the bottle you want easy clean up.

MY STORY
What I did was apply it 3 times a day for 4 days, then once a week for 4 weeks, then once a month for 3 months. I don't know if more would be faster or if less is fine. In 6 weeks I was amazed at the change in my toes and nails.

Change in 6 weeks
* My toe skin looked healthier
* Light pink nail was growing out the bottom
* My right big toe left side of the nail had (before treatment) began to detact completely making another toe nail! After 6 weeks it began to reattach a full 1/8 inch!!!

Now (5 months later)
They look great. The only sign left is a major ridge that you can't see (but use to see) but I can feel it with my finger. My right toe nail has completely reattached.

INCOURAGEMENT
I would like to say that when you get rid of this infection, your body will fight other infections faster and you'll feel healthier too.

So don't let anyone, nurse or doctor tell you it can't be done!!

I have pictures but I guess I'll had to describe them instead.

IF IT WORKS FOR YOU PLEASE TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW BECAUSE NO ONE ELSE WILL!!

(IT'S OBVIOUS TO ME THAT THE MEDICAL COMMUNITY IS NOT INTRESTED IN HELPING.)

I have never joined in a blog discussion of any kind but am breaking my (unofficial) rule for this occasion. THANK YOU SO MUCH for all the information and for all the subsequent comments from so many.

I have had localized (if that is the term) fungus in one large toe nail for twenty years (began when I helped a friend put a waterbed frame together – in sandals – and had the frame fall on my foot and “pop” the toenail off. Ouch!) and it has only recently spread to my other toes. No one else has mentioned this, but my toes hurt to run on – which is a real drag when you enjoy jogging.

Anyhow, I will try Mark’s magic formula and send back posts if it does or does not work. I did see a Podiatrist this week and received a prescription for Lamisil. (Along with a lab test for liver function.) I hope to be able to treat it with this remedy, but if not, am prepared to use a strong prescription.

I am ready to shout good news from the housetops! ;)

p.s. I agree with the writer who recommend two spaces after periods. I need to get back into that habit.

I just wanted to save others time...I could not find the decolorized Iodine at Walgreens.com, Walmart.com, Drugstore.com, etc. I did see it at Amazon but it looked 'iffy' and did not give the solution percentage(s). I also called Walgreens, Walmart and Target, it was not in stock at any of these stores [for our area]. I called our local CVS store and it is not carried there either. I did find it on CVS.com. I bought four bottles, no restriction(s).

A 6 week update and so far so good. My new nail growing is not turning nasty and the skin under the nail looks great. And the crumbly stuff, don't know any other way to explain that but I know you know what I'm talking about :), is gone. I will continue to give updates. I hope the treatment is working for other people.

Hey everyone. I'm 21 and my left big toe has been affected by fungus ever since I was 12. I've never had the time or opportunity to get treatment for it but I decided to look online since I don't trust doctors on this matter. The problem arose when my nail was partially removed in surgery for an in-grown toenail (thus, my mistrust).

I'm going to see if I can't find this colorless/white iodine and try this myself.

Also, it would be highly appreciated if those of you experiencing success could post progress pictures. Use www.tinypic.com or something to upload them and post your image URL links here. Considering the large amount of 'fake cures' and 'scams', etc. it would help a lot for the authenticity of this particular thread.
Thanks everyone.

Just wanted to let everyone know that after I called Walmart and was told they did not have decolorized Iodine...I checked at the pharmacy department and they do!

I'm a manicurist and let me tell you, there are some pretty bad nails out there. We have expensive treatments available for our clients, but I'm thinking this method sounds better than them. Can't wait to pass this on. From what I gather, it's failure to treat daily that creates opportunity for bacteria to thrive. Thanks for the post.

Started on 7/7 with Iodine. Pushed back the skin between the nail (cuticles) to try and get more iodine into the nail bed and trimmed nails every week. I noticed changes almost immediately. I know Mark suggested doseage, however in a panic I applied Iodine several times a days (almost hourly-crazy I know but think of the deodarant you put on every morning and the chemicals you absorb from the environment alone). I did this for ~2 weeks. At the end of the second week, I started applying Tea Tree oil after the Iodine. I work from home so it was easy for me not to wear shoes and keep feet dry during this time. In the last couple days, I have been caking on lotrimin ultra on my toes and nail 2x a day since they appeared dry. I stopped tea tree after a week I couldnt handle the smell and the mess. I think the key for me was filing the top of the nail and when I applied it with a q-tip I pushed the idione directly between the skin and nails. Before starting the Iodine, I stopped seeing my doctor because he said there was no cure and prescribed lamasil (oral) which my body couldn't resist. Yesterday I went to get a second opinion after being on the Iodine since 7/7. I didn't know whether the iodine turned my toenail yellowish or the fungus was getting worse. In summary, the second doctor told me he didn't see any signs of fungus and the the nails are yellow from using the iodine and I should let the yellow nails grow out. He didn't feel necessary to do another test. So fellow fungus suffers, be patient and dilengent with your therapy of choice and pray to St. Jude. I'm not a religious but do believe in his miracles. THANK YOU MARK I'M CURED (AT LEAST FOR NOW)!!!

I was on Lamasil unsuccessfully for 9 months. They now want to put me on
Sporonox. I am giving the decolorized iodine a try first. I will report back any progress. I was only able to find it at cvs.com. I would say for anyone else that is going to try this, make sure you get the kind that is 6-7% iodine. Wal mart had some that was only 2%.

Hi, I have fungus on 5 of my 10 toenails. I've tried Marks recommendation now for over a month. I've had mixed results:

1. It just seems like the iodine is drying out the fungus more than anything but it still hasn't fully gotten rid of it. I've cut my nails back now about 3 or 4 times within the 7 weeks, seems like they are growing slower.

2. My nails seem only a little bit less yellow than before starting the iodine (definitely DO NOT use peroxide in conjunction with the iodine, you will have a reddish mess on your hands)

So, after 7 weeks, no miracles yet people. Sorry. But I am going to stick with it for about another month or so and see what happens. I don't want to give up yet. Just don't expect this to be the 'end all' like so many people are claiming on this original post.
