Mark

After TEN YEARS of fighting the toenail fugus I finally WON!!

TREATMENT BENEFITS
* No oral drugs or injections
* Easy
* Application of treatment takes very little time (especially compared to the other treatments I've read)

WHAT WORKED
Decolorized Iodine (also known as clear iodine - non staining).

WHAT YOU NEED - GENERALLY
You need an antiseptic. The infection is on the skin under the nail. There are a lot of antispectics out there but they have to be 'thin' enough to get through the nail (liquid surface tension, viscosity).

WHY DECOLORIZED IODINE WORKS
Iodine absorbs in the nail in SECONDS. It also leaves NO staining - completely clear.

Other antiseptics - Bleach(chlorine), Peroxide (including Hydrogen and urine), Chlorhexidine Gluconate (hospital skin cleaner) are too thick even if you soak your toes in them (although chlorine can make a little difference)

WHERE TO GET IT
Not widely available. I found it at CVS for $5, but it was not at Walgreens or Walmart for me. Mine came in a brown bottle even though the liquid is clear and dries clear.

TREATMENT
A treatment consisted dipping a q-tip in the bottle and painting your infected nails and the skin that is close to the nail. Repeat (double dipping's ok!) until all infected nails are saturated (it can take ten times). Then leave to dry (takes less than a minute).

THAT'S IT! In less than a half an hour you might feel the skin under your nails tingling. You know it's working!!

If it hurts at anytime while applying, you have hit a pocket of infection. Stop and wait the next day to try again.

I STRONGLY recommend that you do this in the bathtub. Until the iodine is absorbed, it smells like cat urine; but that's only for a few seconds. But if you spill the bottle you want easy clean up.

MY STORY
What I did was apply it 3 times a day for 4 days, then once a week for 4 weeks, then once a month for 3 months. I don't know if more would be faster or if less is fine. In 6 weeks I was amazed at the change in my toes and nails.

Change in 6 weeks
* My toe skin looked healthier
* Light pink nail was growing out the bottom
* My right big toe left side of the nail had (before treatment) began to detact completely making another toe nail! After 6 weeks it began to reattach a full 1/8 inch!!!

Now (5 months later)
They look great. The only sign left is a major ridge that you can't see (but use to see) but I can feel it with my finger. My right toe nail has completely reattached.

INCOURAGEMENT
I would like to say that when you get rid of this infection, your body will fight other infections faster and you'll feel healthier too.

So don't let anyone, nurse or doctor tell you it can't be done!!

I have pictures but I guess I'll had to describe them instead.

IF IT WORKS FOR YOU PLEASE TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW BECAUSE NO ONE ELSE WILL!!

(IT'S OBVIOUS TO ME THAT THE MEDICAL COMMUNITY IS NOT INTRESTED IN HELPING.)

I AM SORRY FOR THE ALL- CAPS TYPING,BUT I AM SELF TAUGHT AND IT IS JUST A LOT EASIER FOR ME THIS WAY. I READ MARK'S POST ABOUT THE DECOLORED IODINE FOR NAIL FUNGUS,AND LATER THAT SAME DAY I WENT TO WALMART AND FOUND THE PRODUCT. I HAVE BEEN USING IT ON THE INDEX FINGERNAIL AND THUMBNAIL OF MY LEFT HAND FOR ABOUT TWO WEEKS,AND I CAN TELL YOU THAT IT CERTAINLY IS WORKING. I HAVE NEW NAILS COMING IN AND AM VERY EXCITED BECAUSE I HAVE HAD THE NAIL FUNGUS FOR MANY YEARS. I THINK I WILL KEEP UP THE TREATMENT FOR A WHILE LONGER TO MAKE SURE THE FUNGUS IS CURED. I WANT TO THANK MARK FOR HIS SUGGESTION TO TRY THE DECOLORED IODINE.
THANKS AGAIN,
CHEROKEEDARE

Thank you Marc for sharing your insights and experiences. Like everyone else I have this struggle and am ready to try the iodine. I have just read all the posts ... very helpful but your last one suggests that perhaps you are still struggling with the fungus. I thought maybe you had been 'cured'. You mention being back at square one. Has it returned ?

Thank you for posting this Mark. I am inspired to try again and this time to succeed. I have had the toenail fungus for a few years and tried the treatment recommended by doctor and pharmacist in Australia. A tiny bottle of this stuff - Loceryl - costs $100. And my bottle leaked so I only used it a few times and it was all gone!!! So I tried vinegar, carb soda, eucalyptus oil, but wasn't consistent.
I'll find the white iodine tomorrow and start my campaign. I also have the fungus around my fingernails - the cuticle gets very scratchy and I bite the excess skin off! but it's not in the nail bed yet. I don't want to risk infecting my grandchildren from my hands. My newest grandchild was born last week and is so tiny and vulnerable as her skin is being colonised by 'normal skin flora.'
I like the suggestion of exposing the feet (and hands) to sunshine - it is the best disinfectant. (Here in Australia we are all getting Vitamin D deficiencies because we do not get enough sunshine on our skin, for fear of skin cancer.)
Also, thank you to the person who mentions sterilising nail clippers etc, and using a clean towel each time you treat your feet etc.
I am sure that I became infected with this fungus when I had a 'pedicure' at a day spa while on holiday in Bali in 2006. I'm sure they didn't sterilise instruments between clients - I saw two staff members sorting a container of scisors, nail files etc by tipping them out onto the floor and one staff member selected some items and took them to use on an other client - not very hygenic!! Anyway, Mark, thanks again for the encouragement, and I hope I can consistently include yor practice in my daily routine.

To the 2-27-12 poster: that's a different Marc. Original poster spells his name Mark.

Improvement is slow but I do see some change at the base of the nail. I haven't used the iodine in about a month, but in the beginning I did it once a day for about 6 weeks. Well, actually, I did 3 times a day for 2 weeks, then once a day for a month. I stopped because I didn't want to 'overdose' like some previous posters had done. It seemed like the nail growth got much slower when I as using the iodine, which is another reason I backed off on it.

The base of the nails look clearer, but they are growing so slow I can't tell for sure. I think I will do the iodine once a week to ensure the killing of the fungus.

I have been using the clear iodine for a little over a month now; I can see the nail start to change colors at the base, but it is hard to tell if it is making them less thick. The color of my nail now is a yellow color; it was like a black brownish color before, so hopefully it changes from yellow to pink. I'm going to keep trying this and ive even suggested it to many different people. I have starting pictures of my feet and if I ever get to hanging pink toenails, ill have finishing pictures to share.

I've had nail fungus in both my big toe nails for over 10 years now. They were thick, brittle and crumbled underneath when i cut or filed them. I stubbed it once long ago and it lifted so there has been space between the nail bed and the nail itself. I'm not a good candidate for Lamisil so i came here hopping for a miracle. I've been doing this remedy since December. I wasn't very consistent at first so I stared over in January. It's now April and my two big toe nails have reattached and almost all grown out. They are no longer brittle or crumbly but the one I stubbed is still a bit thick. They are not yellow at all but seem to have turned brownish half way up the nail bed. Maybe I'm using the iodine too much. I used it almost once a week for the past month and I think i'm suppose to be using it once a month. I too developed a ridge where the nail bed and the nail reattached when i first started using the decolorized iodine. By the next few weeks it should be all the way grown out and the ridge will be gone. Thank you so very much! You have helped me more than my own podiatrist. I will post again when my nail beds are pink again. Thank You once again!

Sally

I am going to try this on my right foot and something else on my left.

Jessica

I will try this. I'm afriad, however, that my toenails will fall off, especially after reading how others' toenails fell off when soaking feet in vinegar. Is iodine dangerous? I'm scared.

Darcy

11 months after starting this treatment, my nail is 100% healthy! All discoloration, thickness, and general nastiness is GONE. I still have a ridge, but it is barely noticeable and will probably be grown out in another month. Looking forward to a summer of flip-flops with absolutely no embarrassment. And also to painting my toenails again... I missed that. :)

I tried the iodine treatment because I was sick of everything else simply not working. Iodine is so cheap (one bottle lasted the entire 11 months and beyond), there was literally no risk involved.

I think the fungus was killed off completely after a few months, but then I had to wait for the nail to grow out.

This was such a simple, inexpensive treatment, and I definitely recommend it!

It's been over 8 months and my fungus seemed to get worse after I switched to from colorless iodine to apple cider vinegar about 3 months ago. The nail base is still pink, but the nail tips were getting yellow and crusty. I'm going back to the clear iodine which seemed to work better over the first 6 months.PS, very slow, almost neglible growth.
