Toenail Fungus Home Remedy Comments

135 Comments for the Toenail Fungus Home Remedy

After TEN YEARS of fighting the toenail fugus I finally WON!!

* No oral drugs or injections
* Easy
* Application of treatment takes very little time (especially compared to the other treatments I've read)

Decolorized Iodine (also known as clear iodine - non staining).

You need an antiseptic. The infection is on the skin under the nail. There are a lot of antispectics out there but they have to be 'thin' enough to get through the nail (liquid surface tension, viscosity).

Iodine absorbs in the nail in SECONDS. It also leaves NO staining - completely clear.

Other antiseptics - Bleach(chlorine), Peroxide (including Hydrogen and urine), Chlorhexidine Gluconate (hospital skin cleaner) are too thick even if you soak your toes in them (although chlorine can make a little difference)

Not widely available. I found it at CVS for $5, but it was not at Walgreens or Walmart for me. Mine came in a brown bottle even though the liquid is clear and dries clear.

A treatment consisted dipping a q-tip in the bottle and painting your infected nails and the skin that is close to the nail. Repeat (double dipping's ok!) until all infected nails are saturated (it can take ten times). Then leave to dry (takes less than a minute).

THAT'S IT! In less than a half an hour you might feel the skin under your nails tingling. You know it's working!!

If it hurts at anytime while applying, you have hit a pocket of infection. Stop and wait the next day to try again.

I STRONGLY recommend that you do this in the bathtub. Until the iodine is absorbed, it smells like cat urine; but that's only for a few seconds. But if you spill the bottle you want easy clean up.

What I did was apply it 3 times a day for 4 days, then once a week for 4 weeks, then once a month for 3 months. I don't know if more would be faster or if less is fine. In 6 weeks I was amazed at the change in my toes and nails.

Change in 6 weeks
* My toe skin looked healthier
* Light pink nail was growing out the bottom
* My right big toe left side of the nail had (before treatment) began to detact completely making another toe nail! After 6 weeks it began to reattach a full 1/8 inch!!!

Now (5 months later)
They look great. The only sign left is a major ridge that you can't see (but use to see) but I can feel it with my finger. My right toe nail has completely reattached.

I would like to say that when you get rid of this infection, your body will fight other infections faster and you'll feel healthier too.

So don't let anyone, nurse or doctor tell you it can't be done!!

I have pictures but I guess I'll had to describe them instead.

I too, as many others here have suffered from the fungus for many years. My doctor recommended lamisil years ago, but the cost was too expensive. He also told me it could return. With that in mind, I said no. I also knew the risks of liver problems. A friend of mine recently was taking lamisil and she lost her sense of taste. I asked her why she had lost so much weight. She told me she was on lamisil and lost all sense of taste and therefore couldn't stand food. She has to have blood tests taken to make sure she has no liver damage. She has discontinued the lamisil. I will have to tell her about your idea Mark. Hopefully she and I will have successful results. I have tried chlorox, peroxide, and vinegar. I have had some success, but no sure cure. I will try the uncolored iodine. I have also read the comments of not using it with peroxide. I used peroxide today, how long do I need to wait before I can use the iodine? a day? a week? I will keep you posted on results.

can you rub this on your nail while they have polish on them?

How many of the people who have slow growing nails are women?

The main minerals that nails need to grow are iron and zinc. These are also the main minerals lost in a menstrual cycle. A good online vitamin company called Puritan has a nails formula with iron and zinc (search their site with the word 'nails').

Wikipedia says “Some women may have parallel white bands or lines on the fingernails marking menstrual cycles when marginal zinc deficiency was present.”

If I could edit my original post I would definitely state not to mix or use with peroxide (including urine). How long to wait? My gut says a day but because of possible staining better make it a week!

Lugol's iodine stains :( and has no alcohol (needed for absorption).

For the once a week and once a month treatments only one saturation treatment (that day) is necessary (not three).

The iodine will not go through polish. I think you can use polish between treatments but I did not use polish (yeah).

I just want to take a moment to thank you! This really seems to help and my toenails look so much better after 2 weeks.

Thanks Mark for the above update on the week & month treatments.

I will start the monthly treatments next month & I will post an update on how it's going.

My problem is with 3 nails & 2 toenails.
I've had this problem for 4 to 5 years.
Doc. put me on generic Lamasil, which I did take for 2 weeks until I researched the side effects & stopped taking it.

Thanks again

Now at the 2 week mark and have noticed 2 significant things: 1) the base of my big toe is now pink and has grown, 2) the thicker nails when saturated with the iodine crumble inside the nail clippers. You can 'chew' down the thickness of the nail since the iodine greatly softens them all the way through- never seen this before.

I've also been trimming/filing/removing as much infected nail as possible over time, then applying the iodine.

I can feel the tingling with each application- something I never felt with any other of the typical remedies, including Tea Tree and Oregano Oils.

I posted 4 days ago so this is really early considering I planned to do so every 2 weeks but I saw something that has me convinced- I have the fungus on 6 toes, including both big toes and the base of one of the big toes is now clear and nail colored about 1/3 of the way up. If I angle my toe, I can see a shine on that part of the nail- smooth and shiny like normal??? I've had this infection for 20 years and tried everything and nothing worked except the iodine. I'm actually considering buying sandals for next summer.

This is really life-changing and hopefully the end of a 20-year nightmare.

With deep, almost tearful gratitude,

I have been following this treatment exactly as Mark instructs since the beginning of July and it definitely works! I had the problem on my big toes and now my nails are about halfway grown out and I only have signs of the fungus where the nail has not grown out. I have no sign of it where new nail has grown. In answer to the nail polish I put the iodine on and then wait to polish my nails until later in the day or the next day and then keep it on until the next treatment or until it needs changing. The polish has not had any bearing on the effectiveness of the treatment. Thanks Mark!

Fungus fighter

Has anyone tried, the normal colorized Iodine? I couldn't get the white iodine so I've been taking the orange one, the difference is it contains pure 2.5 g Iodine(is colored) and 2.5g Potassium iodide(is a white salt). I think the colored has an advantage the orange pure iodine isn't soluble in water so you cant wash it away when you shower , i guess you lose all white iodine tincture while showering? After the 4 days i will wash the orange iodine away
by pure alcohol and if that isn't working i try water and Sodium thiosulfate , Sodium thiosulfate turns iodine into sodium iodine which is soluble in water, I hope it works.

It's now three months that I've been using clear iodine. Seems like the fungus has dried around the edges, but not much difference since my toenails grow so slowly. It seems to work on the fungus, but only time will tell. Mark said his took eight months.
