For poison oak or poison ivy use plain table salt. Just wet the infected area and rub it with table salt for fast relief and to stop the spread. Use again if itching doesn't stop after the first application. Usually stops it cold and also stops the spread. I have been using it for over 40 years with much success... It was told me by my Grandmother who had used it for many years.

My husband is extremely sensitive to anything that says that it is 'Poison'. He usually has to go to the doctor and get a steroid shot to stop the itching and the spread.
This happens at least twice per summer and sometimes more. He usually uses a chemical product to burn the area to get it to stop itching. But we tried your salt story tonight and he seems to believe that it is going to do much better. Thank goodness.

I just did this as well, seems the itching has greatly been reduced.. I just was a little skeptical whether or not 'rubbing' the affected area would spread the ivy rash or not...

originally striken mildly 3 weeks ago ,mostly on my legs, I applied the mainstream treatment of calamine and benedryl concoctions. Just as I thought it was about gone it flared up again 2 days ago even worse than initially, This time spreading to my hands and arms too. Not willing to spend more money and time and wait another 3 weeks to see results I found this salt treatment remedy and have seen better results and relief in 24 hours than I thought was possible..My only wish is that I had found it earlier. FYI ..I took a little Dawn Dish soap and added it to a bowl of water.. Then dipped my washcloth in it enough to wet it, liberly shook the salt shaker on top of it and applied it firmly and briskly to the infected areas..went to bed as isand the results in the morning were dramatic.

I just wanted to ad a little bit. Salt is EXCELLENT. However, instead of using that, try using regular- granulated- white sugar. While in the shower: wash the area(s) with soap and water, pack with sugar on each poisoned area, (doing this will reduce swelling if you have it bad enough), then proceed to rubbing that area for approx. a minute for each area. Wash off. Now pat dry, rub an ice cube over the areas. You hardly feel the cold. Pat dry, now put on your anti-itch cream you may be using. I prefer Caladryl. All day, no itching and it dries the heck out of it. The sugar will take the swelling down almost immediately. It also exfoliates the area so the juices may seep. This helps it heal MUCH quicker. Sometimes when I get out of the shower, I have to let it air dry for about 30 minutes the the juices seep and I don't waste my Caladryl and have it drip. I truly hope this helps someone. I is the ONLY thing that helped after going to the Doctor 2 times in 3 days. They gave me shots, benadryl, and cream. The sugar is what has healed it. :o)

i get horrible poison ivy and i started itching and i thought This might be the trick were it goes away in like 2 days i tried it and it did take care of he itching for awhile but it did not clear the infection it just prolonged it and it spread to my eyes i went to the Emergency room and was told by the doctor that the salt on the poison ivy was a sick trick from someone on the web

salt definately works miracles but i would add some talcum(baby) powder to the mix. it makes a kind of whipped lotion. just spread it on the affected areas and it definately stops the itching and the rash will disappear after a couple applications.

after reading the great outcome of salt i finally tried it. WOW WHAT A MISTAKE!!! it burned like nothing i had ever felt and for a while it helped with the itching. it started right back in about 10 mins and went to the bath room. not only was it itching even worse my face looked as if i had took a wire brush and scrubbed it raw. so as it may work for some it would be the last thing i would tell people to try.
