Take L-lysine, found in the vitamin aisle. Take it as soon as you feel the tingle. Take 3 times a day. Usually the cold sore never develops.

I'm 24 and have been getting cold sores since I was just a baby. I don't know if it's because I have tried so many different things and have built up a tolerance to them but the Lysine (both the pills and topical cream) just don't do a dang thing for me. Just a heads up for long time sufferers, this might not be worth the money or time!

I have used garlic on the first tingle of a cold sore and it works wonders. Just crush the garlic and rub it on the spot, or even after appearance of one. The cold sore will dry up in a day. The garlic stings a little but it works fast.

This will seem off the wall, but I used to get cold sores all the time, then I stopped for a long time and couldnt figure out what happened. I finally pin pointed it to my new taste for craisins. And have since found out that if I start to feel that tell tale tingling I try to eat a handful of craisins maybe 4 or 5 times through out the day. And for a few days after. The pain never develops. If I don't catch it at the tingling and pain develops I found that using Ice on it when ever I think about it through out the day for a day or two with the craisins stops it in it's tracks also

When I first feel the tingle I have to go and grab an ice cube to stop the swelling. Mine hit me so fast that they actually swell my lip up and the blister is HUGH if I don't put ice on it first. While holding an ice cube to my lip I get one 1,000mg lysine tablet and take it. I only take one a day and it works for me!!! The ice keeps the swelling down and the lysine takes care of the blister in 3-4 days. I also use Orajel for Cold Sores for pain.

Untreated, my cold sores last 2 weeks from the first tingling sensation until the final scab falls off.
Now, as soon as I detect the tingle of a developing cold sore I take 1000 mg of L-lysine every three hours (yes, I set my alarm to get me up in the small hours) for the next 48 hours.
As a result the blister never gets very big, remains moderately uncomfortable and most importantly, never erupts. Thus avoiding the most uncomfortable and embarrassing aspect of the outbreak. The spot on my lip discolors a bit and, almost exactly 1 week later, is gone. Completely. With no adverse side effects in the process.
Keep a good supply of L-lysine handy for the next time you bump your lip, get too much sun or get really stressed out about shit the of life.
I will next time try 1500 mg every three hours based on what I've read here.

@MM hsv-1 is not always the culprit in oral herpes outbreaks and the same goes for hsv-2 not always being the root of genital outbreaks. You can contract or spread both strains of the virus to either and not to mention other mucus membranes. So just because you have a genital outbreak don't assume it's hsv-2. I have hsv-1 outbreaks "down there" and they are more frequent and bothersome than the typical hsv-2 outbreaks.

I have tried anything and everything possible to treat cold sore. It is sort of a contradiction because my main trigger for an outbreak is stress. Stress causing the outbreak and searching for an effective remedy causing stress. It's a viciouKYs cycle ;) I have used crushed garlic cloves many times and for me it did indeed help significantly with stopping the virus in its racks as well as speeding the healing time, however; it does tingle a little but only for a few seconds. The worst part for me is the smell that accompanies this rememdy. My lips continue to smell for up to almost a week after I've stopped applying the garlic. I have also made my own topical Lysine paste using a Lysine pill and oderless garlic extract capsules. I just take half of a Lysine 1,000 mg pill and break it in half. Crush the half and use a needle to poke a hole in the 1000 mg garlic capsules and combine the two together

Then apply the paste topically. I also take one 1,000 mg Lysine pill at the first sign of an outbreak. This remedy so far has worked great for me. After reading some different threads on cold sore remedies, I am going to attempt to make my own lip cream specifically for an outbreak. The cream is going to use a plethora of ingredients I have compiled together after research. Ingredients include: Essential Oils of Tea Tree, Peppermint, Lemon Balm, and Lavender. Carrier oils such as coconut oil and castor oil, Aloe Vera gel and my go-to Lysine/Garlic paste I just shared. I will leave a follow up comment in a few days (hopefully sooner) as to the effectiveness of my concoction.hope this can help many of you, as I know exactly how frustrating an outbreak can be!!

Has anyone else had any side effects from Lysine? The first day I took 3,000 mg and had stomach pains and diarrhea. Today is day two, and I didn't put the stomach issues together with the lysine and took more today to get rid of my cold sore. Ugh, today is going to be long. I was just curious if anyone else is going through this.
