I have had acid reflux for 20 years. I always used Tums or Rolaids but that worked less and less well as the years passed by. I saw that people had poeted that gum was working for them. I laughed when I first read that people were chewing gum to get rid of heartburn. But i tried it about 4 months ago and I have to say it definately worked for me. I read that Wrigley Juicy fruit was the best so I tried that one. I chew maybe one or two pieces every other day or so and my heartburn has decreased by 90%. Its not totally gone but I am good with 90% less. I thought I should post this because maybe it will help someone like it helped me. Good luck.

I thought I was having a heartattack. After one hour of severe pain ,my husband read this and i tried it. It does work.

I had heartburn all morning so I checked and saw this. I just happen to have mint chocolate chip gum in my purse so I tried it. I already feel MUCH better!

I woke with severe heartburn pain, checked out this website when tums didn't work and tried the baking soda/water and raw apple suggestions. I
got enough relief to go back to sleep but woke 2 hours later with the heartburn again. I went back to the website again, this time I popped two sticks of gum in my mouth to chew while
I was reading the suggestions and comments. After about 15 minutes or so
the pain had noticeably subsided and with more chewing was gone. I'm going to buy some gum for my medecine cabinet
since I'm not a regular chewer. I appreciate this site for home remedies.


What you really need is to follow Shelton instruction about food combining... eg: no starches with protein... that mean that any sandwiches must been removed from your diet, as pasta with meat o fish, no chips and chicken!!! Don' t eat starches with acid food: no pasta with tomato, no potatoes with vinegar, no sandwiches with ketchup.... what you need is: don' t eat every thing your eyes see!

Not so much the gum that is doing the trick. As chewing gum stimulates your saliva glands to produce more saliva which is somewhat alkaline in nature, it helps neutralize some of the acids from the stomach during reflux. Although a fairly large amount of saliva is needed to fully neutralize the acidity of the reflux, the process of constant swallowing of saliva caused by chewing gum has nonetheless also prevented or at least minimized the acid reflux from occuring so frequently.


OMG!!! i have juicy fruit in my purse it so worked..I have had heartburn for over an hour and finally decided to google home remedies when my meds were not working and this so worked..thank you for posting..i got to go to work in 4 hours and still no sleep thanks to the burning..but now i can go to sleep..ty again


Absolutely agree with Mike - chewing gum produces saliva which is alkalyne.
Maybe a trick during the meal is to look at this great bottle of red wine or massive cholocate cake, and refrain from having them and instead salivate from envy!


Yes! Chewing the gum has relieved the burn. I have the lapband and it still worked.
