Eating a spoonful of peanut butter or a cup of hot milk before bed helps because these contain Tryptophan- an essential amino acid (meaning your body does not produce it- it comes from an outside source) which helps the body produce the B-vitamin niacin, which, in turn, helps the body produce serotonin, a remarkable chemical that acts as a calming agent in the brain and plays a key role in sleep. Turkey also contains tryptophan, thus making you feel sleepy after Thanksgiving dinner.

While all these foods do contain Tryptophan it is in such small doses it doesn't make a difference. You feel sleepy after thanksgiving because you eat so much and the energy and blood used to digest this massive amount of food wipes you out.
I was watching a show on the effects of turkey and you would have to eat more than one whole turkey by yourself for the small amounts of tryptophan to effect you.

Try buying Meletonin capsules at any supplement store (like gnc or some stores carry them) that is what your brain secretes to make you sleep...


Hot milk doesn't make one hoot of a difference you might as well drink hot water
