Eat a seedy slice of jalapeno!

This could've been the final bit to a combination of things. But a second ago I ate a small slice (with some lettuce) and had an unproductive coughing fit for about two minutes that made my nose run. On the third (gentle) blow it popped. It's still not completely clear. But my left ear has been totally clogged without a single bit of fluid movement for three days. It's the second clog in a week. First it was clogged for two days post plane trip--where I had some lung irritation from a very polluted city I was visiting. That probably caused the congestion that put pressure on my inner ear during descent. That time it popped with some gentle blowing with closed nostrils AND jumping up and down. But two mornings later I woke up with it blocked again and that's where I was until just now--three days later. I was going insane.

Here's what else I did in case it all plays a part: Hung upside down on my bed anytime the pressure got to unbearable, held my face over a steamy pot, gargled with warm salt water, drank cayenne pepper in water with lemon and maple syrup, tried to sleep propped up with a heating pad resting against my ear. This morning I called the doctor. He couldn't fit me in today but recommended Mucinex-D pills and Afrin nose spray. I had already taken a Sudafed 24 hour maximum strength (240 mg)an hour before the doc called me back so I asked the pharmacist how to combine. She said Mucinex D is Mucinex (regular) plus sudafed so keep taking the Sudafed and buy regular Mucinex. I took it and did two sprays of Afrin about three hours ago. Nothing had budged yet.

Then I ate the jalapeno (capsicum is known to help with mucus build up). I credit (and thank profusely) nature. But take from it what you will. Again, I'm not totally unclogged yet but I got a lot of relief and it gives me hope. Some of the timeframes out there are scary. I was freaking out over having to live with this for weeks or months. Good luck to you!

Distinguish ladies and gentlemen

Thanks very much for all the ideas you have shared in this forum. I was suffereing from an ear blocked that has disturbed me for a week. I was very uncomfortable and nothing seemed nice to me any more. After reading your articles, i wanted to give a try but a coworker asked me to go see a doctor. I think that seeing a doctor is another best option because you may never know what is in that ear. In case of anything, the doctor stands a better chance of giving medical clarification. Always think of the doctor first
Thanks
I am well now

Ok guys I went through all the Ear Congestion remedies for my mother and I can tel you what we did just a few moments ago and it WORKED!!!! She is already hearing better!!! My mom has been having ear troubles for about 2 weeks. I literally have to scream(well, talk VERY loudly for her to hear me. This did not stem from a cold just simply ear congestion.

1st. I heated up rice in a sock and she laid on each side with the sock against her ear for several minutes. Well, that didn't help her hearing but she said it felt good :)
2nd. I poured straight peroxide in each of her ears then wadded up a cotton ball to keep the liquid in and let it do its job.
3rd. After a few minutes I took q-tips and pulled out WADS of ear wax!! It took several to get it all out. (Please don't stick it too far inside your ear canal because that can cause pain and make your ear drum bleed.)
Finally, I heated the 'rice sock' up again and she is laying on that again (alternating sides) at this moment.

That's the steps I took. When I pulled out all the ear wax she was already hearing better. She could hear me when I was talking at a normal level. The 'rice sock' I used for the second time more for her comfort than anything. But I can say personally this worked so good. She can hear better than she has in a long time. Thank you for the ideas that I got from this site. I wanted to share what worked for me and I know it will help someone else with the same problem. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!!!

Ear congestion - Blocked eustachian tubes. A bad head cold turned into a bad sinus and ear infection. Then, my ears got so congested it was hard to hear. I tried a variety of things. Finally, I went to the ear doctor, and she suggested an 'ear popper'. It is a small, handheld device which gently blows air into your nose. I guess it equalizes pressure inside and outside the eardrum or some such. After a day, my ears were clear most of the time. After a few more, the congestion was gone entirely. What a relief! You will probably need a doctor's prescription to order one, and they are expensive (about $175). So, like me, you might want to try other remedies first. But, if nothing works, then you might consider the 'ear popper'.

Plugged for a month

My ear has finally opened after a full month of being plugged. What a relief! I have had this problem 3 or 4 times over the last 8 years.

What finally worked for me was inhaling Eucalyptus Oil in steam through my nose. You can buy it in a vitamin store. The relief was intense and almost immediate. There are a few other remedies that helped along the way to healing but inhaling steam with Eucalyptus Oil had the greatest effect. I was able to use a steam room, but you can also just boil it in a pot, or use a steamer and drape a towel over your head to capture the steam. You don't need much eucalyptus oil, just a few drops in 2 cups of water is plenty. Inhale through the nose! Try to keep your head up. The first day I used it I found relief after 20 minutes. Unfortunately when I took a shower,I got more water in my ear. However I knew I was on the right track. The second day of using eucalyptus oil in steam, the effect was much greater, and I'm happy to tell you that I have about 80%-90% relief, and it is getting better.

I read this blog and did find some other things that helped:

1) Don't lay on your affected side. Keep your head propped up. It will keep the liquid from accumualting in the ear.

2) Whatever you put into your ear, warm it up to (at least) room temperature first.

3) Laying with my affected ear up, I used warm 100% hydrogen peroxide via a dropper. I did this for 15 minutes, or so. It doesn't hurt, but it will sting if you get it in your eyes (I found out the hard way). It bubbled like crazy, however it didn't open the ear canal. I found it helpful because it loosened things up. Afterward, I could hear 'sloshing' when I moved my ear with my finger. Some gunk leaked out, but not much. I did this for 3 days before trying the eucalyptus oil.

4) Another poster had a great idea. Submitted by bri at 2008-02-20 23:37:06
'I stuck my pointer fingers in my ears; not all the way, but enough for the tips of my nails to go slightly past the curve in the outer canal. With tops of the fingers pointing up, I kept my fingers straight and used the leverage to pry that outer opening of the ear up and towards the back of my head. It feels like its pulling on other things farther in the ear, and it doesn't hurt. It only muffles the hearing. I then yawned and kept those muscles stretched for as long as I could.

Within a few seconds, I could literally feel the warm buildup draining down my canals.'

Using this idea, I did get some very temporary slight relief, but not much. The best thing about this trick is I discovered that I would get better as soon as I could get the trapped fluid out of my ear.

I hope this post helps somebody. Don't panic and don't jam anything into your ear. It is a common problem, and you can heal yourself. It just takes time.

Thanks to all the others who shared their experiences, and thanks to whoever started this blog.

***This may prevent stopped up ears***

Don't sleep on your side. Sleep on your back and prop up the head of your bed or use extra pillows to elevate your head.

I have had sinus and allergy problems for the past few weeks with nasal congestion, sinus pain and pressure. The other day I was laying in the bed (on my side, with my head NOT propped up) and I felt the fluid drain into my ears... I can not believe that it happened so quickly.

Sounds like common sense but, I had never really thought about it. I won't make that mistake again. This is worse than dealing with the sinus and allergies.

Call your buddy with the sweet sound system in his vehicle and sit in the back seat while listening to something with bass. It'll rattle it out pretty good.

I found this site when I couldn't sleep because my right ear was so clogged it hurt. I'm getting over a cold so all the mucus and whatever else is up there was what was blocked up. I found the remedy where you get a wash rag, wet it, then put it in the microwave for 2 minutes, take out and then wrap in a slightly bigger one. I held it up against my ear and I could slowly feel the stuff in there break up and start to drain. I did this probably 3 times, and the last time was when the pain got intense to pop. Finally though after about an 35 minutes of this there was a huge pop and all the built up stuff immediately drained, and I felt so much better. Right now my ear is still popping a little bit but it's nothing compared to what it felt like earlier! Thank you so much to whoever posted that remedy!

It's important to differentiate between ear congestion due to an ear/sinus infection and due to wax buildup. Basically, if you feel pain inside your ear, it's an infection. If all you feel is pressure, it could very well be just a wax blockage.

For an infection, antibiotics, hot compresses, allergy medication, and the other remedies listed can all help. If it's wax buildup, hot compresses can again help, but the best thing to do is to go to your local pharmacy and find both wax-softening ear drops and a plastic syringe. Use the drops as directed a few times a day, and each night rinse out your ears using warm water from the syringe. Flush the affected ear(s) a couple times each night, and it should eventually loosen up and blast out the wax.
