Hello,
Please try the clove oil. I am very familiar with tooth pain. I used whole cloves from the spice rack, crushed them and put them into a empty teabag.
This makes a nice packet that you can place between your cheek and gum in the affected area. Suck the juice out of this for a while and don't swallow too much. I found this to be affective.
The clove oil that you can purchase is probably more efficient. Good luck I know what it's like.

I've had extremley bad toothache now for 4 days and until today i havent slept for 4 days!!! I had a filling a few weeks ago but the root of the tooth as died and i am in agony, i am having the tooth removed in 2 days but until then i am on my own as powerful pain killers no longer work! I've tried every remedy on here from vanilla to whisky on the tooth and they all have only lasted for minutes. But today I had a break through that let me sleep for a whole 8 hours without waking up in pain or biting down on my bad tooth (believe me that hurts like hell!)
I got an old T shirt rolled it up a few times then put it in my mouth at the front and at the teeth on the opposite side of my bad tooth and bit down hard, I dont know why or how but this is instant relief, the pain stops instantly! I then went to sleep biting down hard on this with my front teeth and i actually slept for 8 hours, i woke up with no pain although it did return after 2 hours but then i just started the process again and the pain goes away - great i can now manage my pain until i have it removed on Thursday! Good luck everyone, you have my sympathy tooth ache is truely awful!

I noticed how some mentioned using peppermint oil, well I didn't have any but I did have a piece of peppermint candy. I 've been letting it sit between my jaw and the tooth that's aching and the pain is subsidding.

I saw this in another submission, but I have a bit to add to it.

Take a bit of mouthwash (I use the generic kind, but any kind will work) - it has to be the blue or green, it doesn't work with citrus flavored. Keep it in your mouth, being careful to keep it at the affected tooth. Don't swish, don't swallow, just leave it there until it has time to numb your gums. This sometimes doesn't work for long (it didn't work for me tonight for more than a minute or two), but most of the time it does. Another thing to use is just a tiny amount of toothpaste. Rub it above or below the affected tooth and leave it there. It will numb the gum down, and after a minute or two, it will spread to the tooth and numb that as well

really bad toothache seems to strike me mostly at night when pharmacies are closed, for emergency relief I chop-up some ginger and garlic, wrap it in a clean handkerchief and chew on it, or wad it between the tooth and gum like chewing tobacco, your mouth will start to fill with saliva but that's ok, you'll start feeling relief within 5 mins and it should get you through the night.

Thanks for this site! I tried the Vanilla extract, it did not work the first time, I tried again later and it reduced the pain by 50% in about 20 minutes. I took some NyQuil capsules and they took the pain to 0 in about 30 minutes. I found that swishing hydrogen peroxide for 1-2 minutes twice, swishing lukewarm water for 1-2 minutes, and then swishing with mouthwash for 1-2 minutes followed by another 1-2 minutes of swishing water helped longer-term. I took 2 ibuprofen and 2 extra strength tylenol after the swishing helped...I did this procedure every 6-8 hours. I have a high tolerance for pain, but this kind of pain, if unchecked takes me down. I take the IB/Ty only when needed because that stuff can cause liver damage (read the bottle).

My tooth is broken, more liked sheared past the gum, and what remains is obviously infected. I do not have health/dental insurance so I did purchase Fish Mox (amoxicillin), do a search for 'Fish Mox' on google and you'll come across stories of folks that tried it and lived...I haven't read any negative issues...but be damned sure you are not allergic to antibiotics or penicillin or amoxicillin. I bought the 250mg x 100 capsules from Amazon. I will let you know how it goes...if you don't hear from do not assume I am dead : ) I lived in rural Ohio and the local 'horse dentist' actually told me that the amoxicillin he was prescribing was exactly the same brand, type, and quality as the amoxicillin he prescribed for horses. Go figure. A survivalist site (survivalblog.com) has several users that have tried it (supposedly)...though I trust Jim and most of his posters provide very good and reliable information...you have to judge that yourself though. I am going to go to a dentist ASAP (which may be weeks or months), but I know that people have died from tooth infections even in the year 2010. DO NOT take your infection as an 'it'll go away' type issue, you may need a full course of antibiotics and *improve* your oral hygiene (mouthwash, floss, brush *every 6 hours*). See a dentist and/or doctor ASAP...even an ER (Emergency Room) if needed. Look up 'Blood infection' for symptoms if you think your tooth or gum is infected. This is no joke! Your life or death can depend on your decisions!

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor or dentist and have no formal medical or dental education. My comments are in regards to my experiences only, your experiences may vary.

This site is good, something will work, hang in there and read! Good luck and God bless!

The two things that worked best for me, and boy I was in some pain, was putting a tea bag in hot water and then putting the tea bag on the sore tooth, I bit down on it for about 3-4 minutes and the pain was gone by 80%, after that I used Red Cross Toothache Medicine. Pain gone, mouth numb. I just got done using the Red Cross Medicine and I don't know how long it will last, but the relief is priceless.

I was at the end of my rope with my toothache (the tooth needed to be pulled ASAP)it was so bad that it woke me out of my sleep. I had used tons of remedies and this time nothing work and the pain was intense. I had read somewhere that Oregano could help. I put Oregano around the aching tooth in my mouth and let it sit there (WOW) this stuff worked so every time the pain came I immediately ran for the Oregano. I eventually got the tooth pulled.

Started out with a vicoden, followed by 2 Ibuprofen, swished with peroxide, followed by salt water, then swished with crown royal, then warm water then swished with vodka. Still severe pain. Finally cut a small piece of garlic and it is stuck inside the hole where my filling use to be and pain finally dull (about a 1 compared to a 10 when I first started). Had a couple of glasses of wine earlier in the evening so hope I don't die from alcohol poisoning in the middle of the night. Can't really say which remedy worked, but next time I will start with the garlic clove.

After determining that the ache in my jaw was a cracked tooth, I read over the remedies listed here, and took stock of my kitchen. Tried warm salt water, peroxide, and vanilla extract with no luck. If pain left at all, it came right back. No garlic, so I took the heart out of a Bermuda onion, warmed it up under running water and rubbed it over tooth and gum. Pain is gone!

The Red Cross toothache medicine is: Eugenol 85%. It is not made by the Red Cross, just marketed by them. And it really does work wonders. Tastes like cloves mixed with vodka.

This is a remedy given to me from my mum. I am 11 and this remedy really works. If you have a toothache do this to help it.
1/2 tsp of honey
2 pinches of salt
warm water
Add in the honey and salt then put in warm water to the mix. I know this is an old remedy but it really works! Swish it around in the spot that hurts. You can also use a hot pack or an ice pack to help, but i think the saltwater honey rinse works best!

I've been having toothache problems off and on for months now, but this day at work was particularly bad. I took two pain killers and noticed no change, then I tried a warm tea bag, still nothing...so I went scrummaging through my purse and found a bottle of peppermint essence which I usually keep adding to my tea at work. I used my pinky finger to dab a little onto my back tooth and gum and the pain went away instantly. I just kept reapplying whenever I felt the pain come back and it got me through the rest of the day. Hope someone can use this...you can find peppermint oil or essence of peppermint at a drug store or health food store.

Well this is the first time using remedy's off the Internet, and was not sure if to try them or not but with the amount of pain I was feeling the amount of sleep I was losing I had no choice in try them out only because it was Christmas time so could not see my dentist, so first I tryed the normal way to get rid of my toothache which was to find the most powerfulest painkiller in my cupboard and start taking them but after a couple of hours later
the pain was back and had taken more than recormended amount in the allowed in that day so had to try other methods so the first one was to brush my teeth I used warm water( I recormended you use warm water because cold water hurt like hell) and a small amount of tooth paste it gave me some relef but did not stop it, so I tryed salt water it helped more but could still feel the pain so I repeated these methods I couple of times it still did not get rid of the pain but it was able to help me get sum sleep untill I could see my dentist, in the end he got rid of the thooth all together and within seconds all the pain I was feeling was gone it was heaven so if you are having bad tooth ache I would recormend that you see your dentist or pull out your own tooth

I had broke out part of my right rear molar and it has caused IMMENSE pain. Not the regular pain. I would get up at night and I would be in excruciating pain. I would rock back and forth and cry my eyes out because the pain was unbearable. I have tried EVERYTHING....I tried motrin, Ibuprofen 800 mg, oxycodone, vicodin, tylenol, excederin, pure vanilla extract, ice on outside of jaw, ice on space between finger and thumb and everything else imaginable. Then one day I was searching for some over the counter medications and I came across ALEVE...I took 2 as soon as I bought them and the pain went away. I take 2 per day and the pain stays gone all day long. I finally found the remedy for my pain! I hope that this is helpful to anyone out there who is suffering from the same hellish pain as I have.

Buy Aleve or buy Naproxen Sodium (same thing, generic name)

My excruciating toothache pain in lower left jaw immediately started draining away when I massaged an acupuncture point called Stomach-5 on the opposite side of the pain. No pain all night and all morning. When I felt something start again at noon, I massaged the point again and the sensation disappeared.

Stomach-5 is an acupuncture point for lower jaw toothache pain. The point is located on your lower jaw. First, on the OPPOSITE side of the pain, find the angle of your jawbone under your earlobe. Then, move about 1/2 inch towards your chin along the jawbone. There will be a depression there on the side of the jawbone between the tendons. Massage this point for several minutes on the opposite side of the painful tooth.

It might not work for all toothache pain, but it worked for mine, and I hope it works for yours. I'm making a dental appointment today because a friend told me that root canals these days are done easily and painlessly, unlike the horror stories of the past. I have a cracked filling - no abscess or inflammation.

By the way, some other people found relief by massaging the v-area between the thumb and index finger. That point is called Large Intestine-4. It did not help my particular pain, but it did help others and that is GREAT.

People have different reasons for their toothache. Disease, abscesses, cavities, broken filling, broken tooth. Also, some have toothaches due to stress and/or dietary factors, just like headaches. My pain got worse after eating chocolate and fruit, and warm liquids or warm food made it hurt more, too. Something to think about.

Anyway, good luck to all in finding the relief you desire!

Thank you for all the remedies. Will definitely try all of them. Been in so much pain since August of 2010. My dentist removed my wisdom teeth & put a filling on 1 of my back tooth #31 Another tooth started giving me pain, too much of it #30. Went back & told my dentist about it. They said that different people recuperate differently. Then why is tooth #30 aching. More dose of Vicodin & Motrin 800 mg were prescribed. Another week passed & I came back, pissed off. They still owe me a permanent filling & a crown on tooth #31. They did an x-ray on tooth #30 & told me that this time i will be needing a root canal on 30. Why bother sedate me & put my permanent filling & crown on #31 when i will need to be sedated for root canal on #30 anyways. What?! I was so pissed off & asked them why they didn't see this a month before when they did the x-ray. My dental insurance was all maxed out & i don't have over $1,100 to pay them for a root canal. Got a 2nd opinion from another dentist & found out that from his x-ray it doesn't seem to look like i need a root canal. ??? Called my insurance company asking to help me out. Maybe i can use some of my kids' or my husbands coverage to cover mine. In the process, my insurance company informed me that my dentist did a filling on #30. BUSTED!!! No wonder I've been in so much pain. Those unsensitive people not even once told me what they did to #30. My dentist touched the wrong tooth. Confronted them about this. Since they still owe me a permanent & a filling on #31, I agreed to have his wife instead to work on me this time. They given me no Rx to give me comfort in this time of chaos & difficulty. I asked her to redo the filling her stupid husband did. She told me that she cannot promise that it will be cured. In the processed, she mentioned it could be all in my head. !!! Hello??? I was in front of u B*tch!!! Then she said: 'Oh, I see the nerve' Duh, your dear F*cking husband exposed it. So now, I am waiting until January of 2011 to get my tooth fix by another dentist. Tried garlic, vanilla, oregano, even basil, but to no success :-( Tried Orajel which numbs the pain but the pressure is still there. It gives me about 15-20 mnts of no pain hugs my husband & kids moment b4 i start yelling at everyone again. Tried Gel Kam but it's not working for me anymore :-( Brought the story to my medical Dr. He gave me Antibiotics & Prescription pain killer. It took my ear ache away. Ice pack helps out, but not for long. I will sue them MotherF*ckers!!! I will take them to channel 7 News & expose their dirty works. That stupid dentist of mine worked on my tooth on purpose to get more $$$ from my insurance company. Not a single sorry from that A**hole. I will make sure every single person in our community knows what they did to me & good Lord to other people too. If I had a credit card available or any money stash somewhere I probably would have agreed to whatever they want. But since we're broke, I asked too many questions which they didn't like. Watch out!!! I will expose your dirty work!

Hi, I know how painful a toothache can be, especially at night, so I thought I'd share some things that have helped me. I hope these work for you as well!

1) Clove Oil - I know it's a popular one, but it really DOES work wonders! Soak a cottom ball in some clove oil and hold it directly onto the tooth thats aching for a few minutes, and it will almost instantly. Relief will last for hours.

2) Ice Pack - Holding an ice pack against the cheek on the same side of the toothache really helps to numb the pain. It also reduces swelling/the risk of swelling caused by infections.

3) Salt Water - Swish some warm salt water around your mouth, and hold over the tooth that aches for as long as you can. Spit and repeat 3 or 4 times. Doesn't get rid of pain totally, but it DOES numb it enough for you to get a few hours sleep.

4) Tea Bags - Grab a tea bag, place it in a cup of water and then put in the microwave for 1 minute. Remove the tea bag from the cup, and place directly onto painful tooth. Keep it in place for 15-20 minutes, and when you remove it, the pain is gone.

5) Onion - Chewing on a piece of raw onion helped relieve my pain for a short time, but it was definitely the lest effective remedy for me.

6) Painkillers - Another obvious one, but taking painkillers can relieve toothache for up to a day, if the right doseage is taken. Personally, I take 2 Ibuprofen and 2 Asprin at once, but I have a high tolerance to painkillers.

I hope some of these work for you, and believe me, I feel your pain! You're not alone!!! ;-)

For those who have no insurance, try to see if there's a dental school in your area that you can become a patient at. I just became a patient at the UB Dental School and their fees are 1/3 to 2/3 that charged in private practice. The maximum they charge for extractions is $108 for a complicated extraction. Root canals are still prohibitive, $700 per tooth according to the student dentist I saw recently. And he said that under ordinary circumstances I'd be looking at 6 or 7 root canals. That's what happens when you spend months on end not caring about your dental hygiene I guess. I'm not lazy anymore but the damage has been done. But since my student dentist knows that I self pay they're gonna do extractions instead once they find a student dentist who will be around for awhile to do what needs to be done with my teeth, as the one I just saw was in his last week before residency. So that's one drawback....you might have to wait while they find a student dentist and you might get bounced around between student dentists. And also the appointments last longer...meaning allow 2 - 3 hours per appointment because the student's work needs to be supervised and examined by a faculty member. But that's a small price to pay for lower fees and you are helping student dentists get the hands on experience they need. Anyhow I'll be trying some of these other remedies as I think one of the deep cavities they they were gonna try a filling on once they found a student dentist for me may have deepened to make contact with the nerve forming an abscess. what I might try also is warm water mixed with peroxide in a 1-to-1 ratio.

Believe it or not my friend gave me this ointment and I was skeptical at first. Dr. Sheffield's Oral Pain Relief. It says on it 'Gives Immediate Long Lasting RElief from Toothache Pain' I had my doubts. But it's available over the counter without perscription. I tried it one night and my whole mouth went numb just like the novacaine shots. This stuff is great I freaking love it. Active Ingredients are as follows:
Benzocaine 20%

And it's lasted for close to 4 days now with only that one nights application. The gum and even my tongue and cheek were numb in a matter of literally seconds. I'd have sold my soul for this stuff a few years ago.

See a dentist, but in the meantime a fluoride gel may help, e.g., Gel-Kam (.4% stannous fluoride gel made by Colgate).

This is NOT a toothpaste; you use it AFTER brushing (otherwise it may stain your teeth).

My pharmacy keeps it behind the counter (so you have to ask for it), but it doesn't require a prescription.

Good luck and God bless

Don't overlook plain ole warm salt water.. Take some OTC pain relievers- Ibuprophen seemed to help more than Tylenol.. and then swsh your mouth for as loong as you can with warm salt water. The relief was immediate, although it doesn't last forever- but hopefully long enough for the Ibuprophen to kick in. I had tried clove oil, oragel, whiskey, listerine.. but the salt water helped me the most.

Fresh Garlic Clove.
I have a tooth that has been drilled and temporary filled. It's about 35% gone and the root is exposed. No dental insurance is a real killer.
I have rinsed with saltwater and peroxide, vicadin, orajel, digging at it with a toothpick, dental instruments(not a good idea lol) Whiskey/Vodka works pretty well but only temporarily and I think getting drunk is the best option with whiskey. But Garlic clove chewed up and shoved in where the cavity is has got to be the most amazing thing I've done for my tooth. It's infected and that's why it hurts so bad. The garlic is so strong you can hardly stand to have it in your mouth and my tolerance for pain is higher than most. So if possible, chew fresh garlic clove or mash it up and put it in the cavity or on the tooth that is in pain. It has to get to the infected area though. Also chewing onions has helped when garlic isn't available. Garlic is the best though. For REAL!

So I read all about these different ways to remedy toothache. Listerine (only game me a few minutes of relief), Peanut butter, peroxide, oral gel, hot chocolate powder, alcohol(which normally works for me), and toothpaste. Well about six hours ago my tooth starts to kill me, so I go 'hey I'm a college student no harm in starting drinking now' well that didn't help, so I tried the oral gel and used almost half the thing without it helping me, then I tried the peanut butter, again no fricken help...So I get this crazy ideal to start mixing things together. So I put a little bit of peroxide in a mixing cup, put like 10 drops of oral gel in with it, then went and put about a teaspoon of peanut butter in, a little bit of vodka, some toothpaste, Listerine, and a splash of warm water and mixed it up until it was a paste. I put it on the tooth that was hurting with a cotton swab let it sit for two minutes and then swished some warm water around my mouth to get the access out and so far (it has now been about 30 minutes) the pain is still gone! And this isn't as disgusting tasting as you would think.

I was in severe pain for days with a bad toothache in the top-very back left tooth. I was taking antibiotics for the infection, because removing the infection is the only way to stop the pain. However, the antibiotics take 2-3 days to begin working and I was in excruciating pain with tears rolling down my face. I tried all of the home remedies I could find. Most would help temporarily-maybe 10-15 minutes and then I would be in horrible pain again. I was at my wits end and was ready to pull it with pliers myself. I don't have dental insurance or the money to have it pulled. I was in so much pain I would have tried anything to stop it. I went RUNNING into walgreens and I was not going to leave until I found something that offered lasting relief. With tears streaming down my face I just started pulling products off the shelf right there and opening them and using them. I was determined to find lasting relief. I would grab a product, use it, and continue sitting there in the floor in tears to see if it provided lasting relief. I wasn't leaving until I found the product that worked. Luckily the 2nd product I grabbed was Cepachol maximum numbing sore throat lozenges with 20% benzocaine and I think 5% of menthol. I opened the package right there and threw one in my mouth back by my hurting tooth. Within a minute or less the pain quit and never came back to the intensity I had been experiencing. After 4-5 days of severe pain I finally had lasting relief. Although I had already used TWO tubes of Anbesol (Oragel) with benzocaine it never worked as well as the throat lozenges. The anbesol would numb my whole face and tooth for about 15 minutes but come right back. I had poked and prodded my gums and tooth in that area by trying to get the anbesol back to it that my gums and cheek were so sore. Although the lozenges had the same ingredient (benzocaine) as the anbesol (oragel) they worked much much better. I believe it is because I could put and keep the lozenge right on the tooth to allow the benzocaine to get down into the roots of my problem tooth. The anbesol would just be washed off as soon as I put it on and couldn't get down to the parts of the tooth that mattered. Each lozenge would last over an hour each but I could take it out after about 15-20 mintues and the tooth never hurt bad again after the very first one. Several hours later I would start to feel just a little bit of minor ache from the tooth so I would put in a lozenge for about 10-15 minutes and not have ANY pain again for the rest of the day and half the next day. I don't know why, but after that first lozenge the pain NEVER came back to even a tenth of the previous intensity. The lozenges were a life saver for me. I had tried EVERYTHING and this is the only thing that provided lasting and permanent relief. I will never ever be without a stock of the lozenges in case tooth pain hits again. I also took 2-3 excedrin to help with the pain. The excedrin did temporarily help sometimes for a couple of hours. But after getting the lozenges I didn't have to take hardly any more excedrin. Get the Cepachol maximum numbing sore throat/cough lozenges. They were miraculous. Chloraseptic also makes a lozenge that is even stronger than the cepachol, with more menthol and I think benzocaine than the Cepachol max numbing. SO the chloraseptic would probably work good also. Good luck. You must take antibiotics though to rid the tooth of infection that is causing the pain. Good luck to all. I feel for you.

For toothache caused by swelling, follow these steps:

1. Take 1 tablet of Advil (2 is better if you can handle it).

2. Take a few pinches of ground cloves and spread them over the swelling area.

The cloves will reduce the pain by about 75%, and the Advil will take care of the rest. Cloves numb the area almost immediately, whereas Advil will take about 15-25 minutes to take effect.

Ground cloves are very common. If you don't have any, they're only about $3 at a grocery store. You could also use clove oil, which can be bought at a local pharmacy.

When using Advil, follow the directions CAREFULLY or else you may end up in the hospital, or dead. Take 1 or 2 pills at a time only. The same rule applies to other pain relievers.

To prevent future toothaches, try to reduce your consumption of sweets and sugared drinks.

I had many toothaches over the years. It runs in the family. First, if you put presure on the tooth and it hurts, throbbs, it may be an abscess. This is very bad and you need to get in to a denist as soon as possible. Infections in the mouth can go to the heart and then you really have problems.
I had a dentist tell me that ibuprofen is the best. I found that placing a whole clove or two in next to the tooth helps. I place it between the gum and the inside of you cheek next to the affected teeth. It works after a couple minutes. I have a friend that swares by chewing an asprine with the tooth that is causing the pain. I tried it and it tasted nasty and it did little to help. Sometimes the tea bag works and sometime it does little or nothing. I had tried wiskey, sometimes it works and sometimes not. Keep trying different things to find out what works best with this toothache, this time. I wish you well

So yeah, I have had a toothache for 3 days now, it's gotten worse and worse and worse till the point where I was crying last night it hurt so bad (I'm not a crier either....)....

...for any who don't already, i'm not saying go out and try it, cause it affects people differently, but if you do, and you can, smoke one...and i don't mean a cigarette either...glaucoma has nothing on toothache pain, but it worked like a dream. 5 minutes later, I was pain free all night, and I could sleep again!

After trying several remedies and not being able to sleep, I put a whole cottonball between my cheek and sore tooth/ gums. It helped me get to sleep and was surprisingly less obtrusive than I thought it would be. Cottonball + a couple pain pills was the only thing that worked for me.

Two 'Goody' powders, one glass of wine (I used white) and application of a tea-bag (just stuck it in my mouth over the affected molar and draped it around, between my gum and cheek) and it's 100% feeling better until I can get to the dentist. OMG take care of your teeth people this pain is not worth anything. Right up there with labor pains.

chew the garlic clove on the tooth that is aching, just keep chewing until it's watery then rub the garlic to the tooth and the area that is aching. don't wash it, just let it stay there, it will be gone..PROMISE!

While at work one night I got a mild toothache from a wisdom tooth that was infected on the top part of my mouth. Desperate I combed a few websites about natural home remedies as aspirin nor ibuprofen made a dent in the ache. Using some of the common remedies I saw I combined baking soda, garlic salt, table salt, pepper and lemon juice to make a grainy paste. I used a q-tip to apply it to the tooth and gum. NO PAIN for hours! I also used an ice pack to my cheek whenever possible. I made enough to keep on hand for touch ups until I can get to the dentist. It really made a difference in the pain level! It dropped from a level of 6-8 to a level 1.

Wow, I tried the vanilla, the hydrogen peroxide, and the tea tree oil, but one was amazing and completely numbed the pain... the tee tree oil. First I poured it on my tooth brush and brushed my teeth with it, but what was more affective was putting it on a q tip and applying it to my gums. Wow, it worked immediately. It tastes awful, but getting rid of the pain was worth it. Now to see the dentist in a few days.

I have a impacted tooth right next to a big cavity and it hurts so bad, I can barely work. Ive been trying a lot of home remedies because I have no health insurance or the money to go to a Dental School Clinic.

But Ive found that pure vanilla extract works wonders. It doesnt taste terrible like clove oil does, nor does it burn a lot like mouthwash or alcohol. Plus the smell and taste of vanilla will calm you and curb your appetite so youll be less likely to eat anything for awhile and make your mouth hurt again.

So try soaking a q-tip or cotton ball in pure vanilla extract and leaving it on your tooth/gum for a minute or so.
Mint or Peppermint extract works too, but burns a bit.

But hey, youre breath will smell delicious, lol.

NOT A GOOD IDEA!! So i read on here to bear the pain for a bit, but instead of just torturing myself i swapped from water to antiseptic mouth wash and the pain went from a 10 to a 2 almost instantly. If your tooth hurts so bad you can't sleep, go running. Really, put on your running shoes and go run a few miles (or more if you can). If you don't exercise daily your muscles will start to hurt, but that will be a bliss compared to that toothache. Not to mention that you'll sleep like a baby afterwards. Good luck everyone

I've had impacted wisdom teeth and several toothaches which were helped considerably by either several aspirin or Excedrin PM. But this one was by a mile the worst I'd ever had, it felt like someone was using an ice cold chisel and a hammer on my tooth. The cold winter air would make it worse. Even walking on a cement floor would make it worse. It was a molar with top and middle hollowed out. This went on for several days and meds wouldn't touch it. Finally I laid down with a heating pad turned on high, against the side of my face, and just laid there and let it burn for a few hours (no skin damage). The heat must have killed the nerve because it never hurt after that. I already had an appt to get it out in 2 weeks.

Last week the dentist did some exploratory root canal work and the tooth/gum has been getting rapidly more painful (and swollen). In desperation (3am), I found this website - what a relief! For me, the following worked:

1. Ibubrofen (it is an anti-inflammatory, but takes a while for the effect to be noticed).
2. A small sip of brandy, held in the mouth against the painful area.
3. 3 cloves, crushed in a drop of water and then applied to the sore area (this gives a burning sensation, but stick with it!).

Within 10-15 minutes, the pain was reduced to tolerable soreness and AT LAST I could sleep. Now, 8 hours later, still pain free (although still very tender). This should keep me going until early next week, when I have the follow-up appointment.

Hope it helps someone out there, toothache is the worst.....

TEA TREE OIL!

Hold a clean toothbrush over a bottle of pure tea tree oil. Hold tip of brush over painful part of the tooth(usually a crevice between teeth) and dig/flip, dig/flip. You might see some blood because there might be an infection, so rinse and spit until clear. If it's a nerve problem it might not go away completely but at least the pain will go from sharp to dull. You still might need a root canal but at least the area will be clean and anestetisized. Also try not to chew on that sore side or it will flare up again. Advil helps too.

After taking 2 vicodin and getting zero relief for a throbbing toothache I found this site. I did the salt water rinse and that only helped while I was rinsing. The next phase was baking soda. It took a bit to really feel the effects of relief but it works. I could still feel some pain and put a very small amount directly on the open tooth. That helped a bit more but tastes terrible. Thanks to all for the remedies. This tooth is broken and wide open so that anything I drink goes directly down to the root. Some of you know how painful that is. So far BS is the best. Next Im trying the onion!

I did not have any clove oil so I cut up 2 clove added 2 teaspoons of hot water. I had vanilla essence and almond essence so I used Angostura bitters, about 3 dashes in the drawn clove. First I swished my mouth with warmed salt water then dabbed the clove/ bitters concoction on the gum around the tooth. It took about 5 minutes but I slept all night and I woke up without pains. My daughter cracked a tooth eating popcorn, we couldnt get her in to the dentist on an emergency because we are self pay and broooke til payday like everyone else here, so we spent an entire night trying just about every natural remedy to help her sleep. nothing worked! we tried an onion, garlic, ice pack, hot cloth, peroxide rinse, hot showers, vics vapor rub on her cheek..some things helped to settle her down a bit but nothing took away the pain...so at 8am, we took a trip to urgent care and got a rx for antibiotics..giant eagle fills antibiotic scripts FREE (not sure if this is nationwide or not but it cant hurt to check) we picked up some ibuprofen as the dr suggested and gave her 1 tablet with her first dose of the antibiotic, and later gave her another tablet with a good brushing/rinsing and put her in the shower..we got SLEEP! This morning we gave her the antibiotic and an ibuprofen tablet..she has been pain free all morning and even ate something besides soup. We did make a dentist appointment for monday, but friday/saturday were complete hell..

So my suggestion to everyone without insurance and suffering..get to an urgent care or er asap..all of these home remedies are great for a quick fix but not for long term...and at least get some antibiotics. in a few days you will feel better.

BTW we did apply for that care credit thing someone here mentioned, and got turned down..I guess the working poor (not on welfare, just making ends meet to pay bills) are to much of a credit risk for dental care *grr*

There are some companies out there that offer discount medical/dental and rx plans as well that run about $20 a month for an individual $40 for a family..

Feel better everyone!

Recent liver problems forbid me from taking normal OTC pain meds so I hit this site. I used a mixture of sea salt and pepper as suggested then chewed some saltines into the cavity area. The pain was gone almost right away. I did how ever use fresh cracked pepper corn because of the pepper oil held inside of the corn. I figured this would be more potent. I now without pain will atempt some sleep, but I will keep this mix and saltines right next to me. Crackers in bed? OK!

I am pregnant with my 3 child and as most of you moms know, babies tend to draw calcium from your teeth while pregnant and can cause some problems later on. Well my 2 child did just that. My back bottom molar (wisdom teeth are gone) got a cavatiy, I didn't have insurance and couldn't get it taken care of. Got worse and worse and now there is a giant hole in my tooth. Looks like a scoop of tooth was taken out of the center. Finally went to the dentist and was told I needed a root canal. My appointment is in 1 week and I am in so much pain. Was prescribed anitibiotics and vicodin for the pain, still didn't do anything. So I checked out this site and went through all the remedies. I tried the baking soda rinse. It actually worked about 15 minutes after I did it. If the pain comes back then I will try others, but wanted to let you know that if you're in my situation and can't take certain things because of pregnancy, try this one on for size. 2 Tbls Baking Soda in small glass of warm water. Hold mixture in mouth for a few seconds then spit out. Repeat until glass is empty. Don't swallow the mixture! In about 15 minutes you should feel complete relief! Repeat if necessary! Hope this helps someone else like me! Thanks to all of you for your input and suggestions!

This was a 'by chance' discovery. Since my tooth was causing so much pain in my lower right jaw, I couldn't eat anything that was tough to chew, or made my teeth touch. So I was eating bananas before I took ibuprofen (4-6 at a time), and to my surprise the ibuprofen was in my system in less than 10 minutes! This happened over a 2 day period and it worked every time. And as you know, every minute is a miserable minute beyond compare with a high caliber toothache.

So after been up all night and day I came acroos this site and tried a couple of the remedies.
1. orajel(maximum) didnt work at all
2. vodka 80% proof worked everytime but only for 15-20 minutes and pain will come back
3. Vanilla extract It didnt work because I bought the 35% cause I couldnt find the 100% one anywhere.
4. water & salt- worked the first time again for around 20 minutes
5. Sensodyne Maximum- was my solution, for a whole hour I brushed my teeth every 15 minutes, I did this 3 times and the fourth time I brushed my teeths let all the foam inside my mouth without rinsing with water applied some sensodyne directly to the broken tooth and pain was gone. Pain hasnt comeback since. I also took some vicadin, excedrin, and ibuprofen in that time span but it didnt work for me.

This is going to be an extremely long remedy, simply because there's multiple ones.

I'm going to start by saying, it's not that I don't take care of my teeth, which I don't, and that is my fault. But my father and I have toothaches together, literally, it's like he passed it on to me.

There are ways for relief, and ways to indefinitely get rid of it without seeing a dentist.

I'm going to start with the ones I know worked for me.

1) A Towel - Yeah, a towel. The fact is, your nerves spread to your blood vessels, which extend through your entire body as part as the nervous system. A towel around your neck will do the track for temporary relief. I say temporary, because you can't walk around outside with a towel around your neck. I would advise it when you go to sleep, so you don't wake up in pain. DON'T TIE IT. Wrap it around.

2) Vanilla Extract - For me, it worked. ...for about 20 seconds. It took the pain away as soon as I put it around the tooth and gum.

3) Cold Water - Yes, excruciating pain from the chill. But if you have tooth decay, it works wonders.

4) Peanut Butter - I didn't end up dabbing it on, I ended up damping the entire side of my gum in it as well as around the tooth. It works, but your tastebuds are going to go nuts licking it.

5) Whiskey - Every single alcoholic beverage in my house is at least 20 years old, and very strong. This did nothing for me.

6) Acetaminophen - Um, yeah, don't even bother unless you're popping 3 excedrins at a time to go to sleep right after.

7) Breathe through your nose, exhale out of your mouth - Believe it or not, this works. You're taking the O2 (oxygen) in through your nose, which is clean air, and letting the CO2 (carbon dioxide) out through your mouth. The CO2 turns into warm air, being your blood is warm (unless you're a vampire I suppose?). Make sure to breathe directly at the part of your mouth the toothache is occurring.

8) Fugheddaboutit - Exactly what it says. Put your mind to work and think of as many things as you can. Seeing the word 'toothache toothache toothache' written down the page and trying to put pressure on it with your tongue only makes you think about it more, causing more pain. The more you forget about it, the longer is stays away. I'm serious. But then again, don't just tell someone to 'forget about your toothache'. Obviously, only advisable when you're not about to go to sleep.

9) Your nostrils lead to your lungs, too - Similar to 8, don't breathe through your mouth at all. Breathe through your nose. This leaves some CO2 passing through your mouth which puts pressure that is invisible to the naked eye on your tooth. It may sound stupid, but it works.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to lather my gums up in Skippy, wrap a towel around my neck like a muslim and fall asleep like a baby.
