My 9 year old had a tooth ache tonight and I came across this site looking for a quick fix, since it was at night. Tried the tea bag, Oragel, and mouth wash with little success. Gave him 2 children's Advil and some cold medicine before I left for the grocery store to look for cloves and Sensodyne tooth paste. By the time I got back (30 min.) he was 75% better. The Sensodyne worked well enough he went to bed happy. I think a slight cold has aggravated a cavity. Went to the dentist 6 weeks ago and they said since it was a baby tooth, they wouldn't do much unless it was bothering him. If it flares up again, we;ll be headed back, I guess. I'd try a good decongestant if other things aren't working for you. Good luck!

This website has been great. I had a filling and it came out about 5 months ago, leaving behind a hole with a cavity. Since I felt no pain, I did nothing about it. But for the entire month of December, I suffered extreme pain. The pain was excruciating, like a shooting throbbing pain that I had never felt before. Initially, I used orajel, swished baking soda (some pain relief though shortlived) and otc meds like Motrin, Advil, and Aleve. After figuring that those meds were no longer working, I started using Bayer. Be very careful-I developed severe ear ringing from using too much aspirin Bayer and started to feel sick-I think I almost overdosed because I took too many pills. So, this is what I did: I started using the Red Cross Eugenol that is found at CVS or any other drug store. This burned my mouth (I actually have a sore on the side of my lip) and I drooled and spit for about 10 minutes, but the pain did ease a little. Unfortunately, the pain kicked back in after a few hours. Upon futher research I read that pain means some type of infection. So I ordered Amoxicillan from a pet store online (my dentist was closed over the holidays). On Saturday night I started taking 500mg every 8 hours but the pain was still bad by Sunday and I changed it to 500mg every 6 hours (and used the Red Cross Eugenol 2 times that day). And by Monday afternoon, the pain had subsided by 90%! I was so in shock and disbelief that I used the Eugenol again as a precaution. Needless to say, today is Friday, I have not felt that horrible pain that brings me to tears and to my knees. Fortunately I will be getting a root canal on Sunday, but this is my testimony that if you have regular problems with your teeth, order Fish Mox from an online pet store and grab some Red Cross Eugenol and keep them in your medicine cabinet!

I am very aware of just how horrible the pain of tooth/gum issues are, and am dealing with it now. I brewed a strong cup of mint tea and am drinking it while swirling in my mouth with some helpful effect. I have also gotten some relief with using a q-tip moistened with tea tree oil (malelucca) over the painful area. It tastes horrible, but is worth it for some relief.

However I want to warn everyone about the many recommendations for the 'Red Cross Toothache' medicine and clove oil (they have the same active ingredient, Eugenol).

Do not use this product more than you absolutely have to, and make sure you use the absolute least possible that you need to get the job done. Clove oil is well documented as a highly toxic substance to ingest (can cause liver failure, etc) and is commonly used as a pesticide due to its lethal properties. Also, clove oil can be very irritating to gums. I would use it only as a last resort, and as little/less as possible. Also, if you keep it in the house, treat it as if it is a highly toxic substance.

I've been dealing with major tooth pain for 2 days. I was reading on here about the black tea bags unfortunately we don't have any. So i brushed vigorously over the infected area swished warm salt water then heated a pepermint tea bag and put lb the tooth for about 10 Minn. Doesn't take it away completely but it definitely eases it.

I can swear by whole cloves.

I had been swilling cold water for several days - pain relief was only temporary. Was also chewing Neurofen and analgesics like they were tic tacs - they weren't even taking the edge off.

After reading advice on here I tried the whole cloves remedy and it worked like a charm. We'll see how long it lasts but I haven't had to swill ice water since.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to go to the dentist in over 7 years. The whole left side of my mouth is jacked up, cracked teeth, chunks missing, etc. The best solution I've found is to start using tooth paste and mouth wash that replaces tooth enamel. Truthfully, I used to have some of the worst tooth aches 4 to 5 times a week, it was killer. I started using toothpastes with enamel restoring and mouth wash with enamel restoring and my teeth feel great. Occasionally they hurt, but nowhere near as bad as they used to, and not nearly as often. Best results are from the dentist though!

Since yesterday night I've had to bare with one of the most painful toothaches anyone can ever come across. I barely slept and after reading most of these remedies I now know why.... Of course I tried the cold water method. Idk y but it looks like its a first instinct for many of us... Though it does help while you switch it from side to side in your mouth once the water isn't cold anymore the pain strikes again... and I found it to get hell of worst when I didn't do it. I couldn't lay down... Could speak... Eat.. This toothache really took over my only day off this week... So I went to Walgreens... Purchased the oragle extra strength... Pain killers and even sleeping pills in case nothing helped I was sure to just knock out. I tried the pulling the tooth thing too but it's in there pretty secure... I think a piece of my tooth broke off... Causing this excruciating pain... So anyways... I tried the garlic and salt. Helped but not for long at all... Warm shower... Nothing... I've been taking pills all day and I have yet to calm or ease the pain away... I went thru my medicine cabinet and found a girls best friends MIDOL. Took another shower... Heavily brushed my teeth... And sat on my bed literally in tears... This pain has been around for more than twelve hours now... As my tears came down my face (not kidding) I prayed... (seriously) I am currentky laying in bed and dont feel any pain...MIDOL and Jesus helped me with my pain lol... Hopefully it helps you!

So, I've been on google for the past hour or so looking up remedy's and all that jazz. I've tried most of them, a lot of people say alcohol works, but as it is 3 in the morning and all the liquor shops are closed, and none in the house, that wasnt an option for me. I have really bad teeth, cavities, and rotten teeth. I've tried many options and so far this has worked the best for me. Orajel Antiseptic Mouth Wash. I tried that and it instantly took the pain away, still throbbing, but so far it has been my best bet. I also tried using sore throat spray, I poured about a shot of that into some really warm water and swished it around for a minute or so, still very affective. If nothing is working, and you cannot stand the pain, I would recommend buying a loratab off the street, they run about $5 a pill, and that will take the pain away. Yeah, not legal, but its for a good cause.

In recent days I've had a sore tooth. So i have taken about 13 ibuprofens a day and that went well for two days till yesterday. Suddenly out of no where i had major toothache! Was even more intense than the toothaches I've had due to needing root canals. I took 6 ibuprofens before bed thinking i would be alright.... but alas no! For 3 hours i struggled tossing and turning, biting my own finger so the pain could be diverted, crying in pain till i just wanted to kill myself (i know it sounds dramatic but the pain was UNBEARABLE!) and at 3am i had no idea where to go besides ER (but i don't have enough to cover a trip there so that was out of the question)

I found this website thankfully and using the remedies i found a solution to limiting the pain (YES IT IS STILL THERE) but it's to the level of a normal filling getting done at the dentist without the numbing needle. I'm 22 and iv'e had over 30 fillings and the sad thing is i wish i was kidding, but yea for those who have SEVERE toothaches and you don't have the money to go out to the dentist then this is the solution for you!

1-I was popping ibuprofen like mint freshners, to give you a better idea of how much i was having it was close to 2 boxes of the stuff in a 3 hour period, this did NOTHING for me.

2-Next i tried ice and still nothing, except irritating my skin even with a little cloth rapped around my bag of peas.

3-Advil 4 at one time, i felt slightly better which even though wasn't much of an effect it took a bit of the edge off the pain. THANK GOODNESS SOMETHING WORKED

4-Amoxicillin took about 3 i think at one time it's an anti bacterial so hope it's doing something... Didn't feel much difference.

5-This i think was one of the best solutions that i tried. Vanilla essence and peppermint essence (don't get the imitation) you need the alcohol in it. You need cotton balls too, dipp the q-tips in the bottle then lightly dab the tooth and area until you feel the tip get warm then use the other end, use multiple q-tips or just the one if you want. Repeat the processes about 3-6 times pain should be dulled and you should be able to sleep if done in the right way. If you decide not to sleep then repeat the method every 20 mins till you sleep or go to the doctor to keep pain at a minimum but also take advil as well.

ALL IN ALL AFTER FEW HOURS I FOUND A SOLUTION THROUGH THIS SITE WHICH WORKED WONDERS!!!

I have recently been experiencing very bad and sometimes unbearable pain from a toothache. I have not been able obtain any medical or dental coverage due to a lack of employment. Anywho, I have found a couple remedies that I tried and have seemed to work. The first was that I took a cotton ball and dipped it in Anbesol liquid, then I putted soaked cotton ball into the hole of my right upper molar which is broken and it sucks. The next thing I did was take some tobacco from a cigarette and applied it to the area where the pain was coming from. Within a few minutes the horrible pain that I was experiencing had actually begin to subside. There is still some pain but it is a whole lot more tolerable than before the remedies where tried. So I hope this helps some one who really needs it. Good Luck!

Ok, so after 2 long and very painful days with a toothache I finally found something that works, not completely mind you, but it works. I went through about 4 different sites trying to find something that sounded realistic, something I kept coming across was garlic and salt and pepper. Well after I tried just the salt and pepper and got only a temporary relief I had the bright idea to try mixing the salt and pepper with some freshly ground garlic and putting directly on my tooth. Wow!! Instant relief, however, the only problem, and it was a big one for me... It burns!!! The garlic has been rinsed out of my mouth for about 10 minutes now and it still burns. The relief is worth it, but I just wanted to add this because of all the remedies I seen using garlic, not one mentioned the burn. It was instant and it was painful for a minute. I could only stand to have it on my tooth for a minute. But I figure it it gives me relief for a time then I can do it again if needed. I have read lots of articles on the benefits of garlic and it really is a little wonder!! Hope this helps someone!! If not, sorry. You may have a different cause of tooth pain than I did.

Had a terrible toothache (I am the worlds biggest coward when it comes to the dentist) so I went on-line to try to find a dentist, long story short, found one but they don't take my insurance!! POOP!!!!! Anyway, as a part of this particular dentist's web-site was the following suggestion and it works like a charm: Take 1000mg of Tylenol and 800mg of Ibuprofen every 6hrs. It takes about 15-20 mins. to work, but once it does it lasts almost the full 6hrs. Hope this helps someone else.

Guys, I did it. I found a way to subdue my pain. Take it from someone who tried literally every remedy on here aside from pulling my teeth out, I found something that helps. It's not perfect, but if you are experiencing the severe pain that I have been, you'll be grateful for anything. Right now my wisdom teeth are growing in impacted AND I have about three missing fillings from a faulty filling session. Everything hurts. Okay, down to business. I'll tell you what I just tried. I bought Sensodyne toothpaste, the cream orajel, not that gross liquid stuff (btw I tried that and it only helped for a minute), ACT restore mouthwash, and mouth sore rinse/wash. You probably wouldn't need all of those, but I was desperate. First I flossed for a good ten minutes and paid close attention to where my fillings are missing to clean them as well as I could. Then I used the mouth sore rinse to kill any bacteria. Next I brushed with the Sensodyne for about three minutes and followed up with the restore mouthwash. Lastly, I put a somewhat generous amount of the orajel cream on a qtip then directly on the missing filling and around the gum and other teeth. Right now it's still a little sore, but I'll take it. I was at the point where I was crying hysterically, not eating, and DEFINITELY not sleeping. I really wish you good luck with your teeth. This is by far the most painful thing I've ever experienced.

Just as an aside, I tried aleve which worked temporarily really well, but then my teeth just stopped responding. The liquid orajel worked for a little bit, but stopped again. Saltwater mouthwash made the pain worse. Dentek (filling replacement)didn't stick or help when I finally got it to. Ibuprofen was a negative, baby teething gel as well. I tried like 3 different cotton ball variations with pain killers and what not and nothing worked. This is honestly the only thing that has worked. Get better! Sorry this is so long!

So after two days of no sleep and pain that I just can't describe, I went to the emergency room and the medicine they gave me worked in 20mins. JUST GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM!!!!! I hope it gets better for everybody

About 5 days ago I had a few cavities filled. Ever since then I had some pain and sensitivity. Well, last night I had such horrible pain---first it started in my front top teeth, then it changed to my front bottom teeth... Neither of which had any work done....I took two Advil hoping the pain would go away and it did, however now the pain switched to the teeth I had work on....it went on for hours and I couldn't sleep the pain was so horrible. I went online hoping for some remedies just to get to sleep. Since it was 2am, and I didn't have any clove oil or tea bags and wasn't going out to get them, I did have peroxide and toothpaste..... I filled up a little bathroom Dixie cup with half warm water and half peroxide... Swished....and immediately my pain went from a 10 to a 1. Then I took a Q-tip and dipped it into the peroxide and just pressed it onto the tooth that still was throbbing and it made it feel even better, but the pain was still kinda there. Upon other suggestion on here, I took some toothpaste and rubbed it on my teeth and it stopped the pain completely. It was only Colgate. I had to rub some of it off because it was burning my mouth after a while, but it still worked and I could go to sleep,

This site has been soo helpful! I have no idea how to treat a toothache but because of reading the comments on this site, I feel really prepared with home remedies. My boyfriend has been complaining of terrible toothache pain around his back teeth for months and has had many sleepless nights. Today his cheek began to look swollen. I went online and came across this site. From all the comments, I decided to go with Excedrine for the pain and Advil PM to go to sleep. I had him take 2 pills of each, brush the area with toothpaste, rinse with antiseptic mouth wash, and apply orajel. He also placed an ice pack on his cheek as he lay in bed. It's been 2 hours and he is sleeping like a baby. He woke up for a moment just to tell me he feels much better. Thanks to this site someone is sleeping well tonight!

Hello. I'm poor and have very bad teeth. I wanted to share some thoughts and ideas with everyone about toothache.

1 - Alcohol
It works. For a while. Others have suggested this. Buy something strong, 40% ABV or more, the more the better. Swish with it to wash out your mouth, but then try to pool it around the hurt. For example, if your painful tooth is on the left side of your mouth, put enough alcohol in your mouth to cover your teeth if you are lying on your left side. Warning. this will HURT. If you are able to stick it out however, you should be able to kill the pain. This will last for some time. I've had this method eliminate the pain for months.

2 - Toothpaste
Sounds silly but it works. Ever hear of that old student trick in dorm rooms of putting toothpaste in to cover small holes in the wall? The idea is you want to stick a gob of toothpaste in your mouth to cover up your cavity. Then the trick is to keep your mouth open (feel free to use your tongue to move your spit around as this will make your mouth dry) until the toothpaste starts to dry. This can take some time and it might be easier to put a ring in your mouth so you don't have to hold it open. I find using Sensodyne plus this method can sometimes 'cure' the pain for years.

3 - Salt
Not Salt Water. Salt. The idea here is that you've exhausted all other options and all that's left is to kill the nerve. To do this you need to do a combo of what you've done above for Toothpaste and Alcohol. First, you need to like down on the proper side, or tilt your head at minimum. This time the proper side is away from the salt. Don't let your spit dilute the salt. You also want to rub the salt in and apply generously all over and around the tooth and try to keep your mouth open. If you feel a bit of pain, you are doing this correctly. After the pain starts to subside, rinse your mouth out with warm water. After about 5 minutes the pain, hopefully, will be 100% gone.

So I have this tooth pain for about a week or so maybe longer, the tooth itself cracked a few months ago, I just don't like the dentist so I refuse to go unless I'm getting something pulled. I have great insurance & don't really pay much for co-pay or anything at all for extractions, I just fear needles and the dentist so I'm very iffy on going :( I know I'm goofy right! but anyhoo I found this site and tried some of the things listed & for me the following works wonders!

1. Brush thoroughly
2. Rinse with a mouthwash that's not harsh, I use kids ACT bubble gum flavor.
3. then follow with a rinse of Listerine, may burn alittle but the ACT helps prevent the burning too much I found.
4. then I took 2 IB's & 1 Klonopin 1mg
5. This I swear when I read it on here I seriosly doubted it would work but holy hell in a hand basket, it took all pain away and I'm still pain free over 12 hrs later! and I dabbed a little on this morning just to be safe lol.. What I used was something called 'Deep Throat Gel' It's sold in Adult stores, I saw someone had said use Anal-eeze cause it contains lidocaine, which it does I have a bottle of that as well, haven't used it yet b/c the other gel works just as good. I had both already on hand so I didn't have to go buy them lol. But I swear if you have anything similiar to that stuff whether it be the anal stuff or deep throat stuff, it numbs the tooth and takes the pain away!!! It's amazing and gross at the same time hahahahaha. Good luck all! I know everyone is different but it can't hurt to try, thank to everyone that posted remedies on here. they've helped alot!!! :-)

sorry but none of these remedies worked. Some worked for a split second then the pain was right back. If you cant get into your dentist right away go to ER or walk in clinic. I went to ER got a shot, some Tylenol 3 with codeine, ibuprofen 800 and penicillin. get some antibiotics otherwise it can get ALOT worse.

Add crushed clove and roll like a very short cig then tuck between cheek and gum.

One of my back molars started throbbing and aching. The pain is terrible but I know if I start taking pain meds I'll be dealing with a stomachache too. I was looking at this sight trying to find something I could do NOW with what I have availible. I noticed several people mentioned holding liquor in your mouth next to the tooth, so I tried it with vodka. It works if you hold it there a long time. The problem is it's tearing up my mouth and I'm salivating like crazy. I just tried something and so far it seems to be working.
I cut a fresh makeup sponge disk, one of the thin ones, into a strip the width of the tooth and soaked it in the vodka and some peppermint oil(I saw it in one of the entries and had it lying around). I rolled it up and bit down on it gently to hold it over the tooth. So far it seems to work pretty well. I'm still salivating a lot, but it's not hurting my whole mouth. I hope it keeps working! Good luck.

I was on a work trip where I don't know a dentist. sudenly, at 8pm teetha che started and I was about to cry, alone with no one to help. I have tried hot water (not helping much. Signal toothpast (robe it on the gum) is soothing but you may need to worm it a bit as cold things didn't work for me. I've used also 500mg panadol but its effect is very slow at the beggining (and if you used to it it will not work in toothache situation). early morning I will call my host and ask them if they know a dentist. If I could pull-out this tooth now I wouldn't wait to the morning but what can I do (now it is 03:30am and I have to wait another more than 4 another hours) GOD helps me.

I took a Yogi Refreshing mint Black tea bag dipped in in just enough hot water to get the tea wet. then i dipped the we tea bag in some BC powder. I then placed it on the hurt too and kept it in my mouth for about an 30 to min to an hr i only took it out bc i needed to talk to a client at work n didnt want to slobber. Try keeping in in for as long as possible.

As for toothaches, I've always just used BC powder (aspirin) put it directly on the tooth and on the gum and it kills the pain instantly. This powder form aspirin works, and best of all is very cheap, and it's over the counter too.
