I cracked a chunk out of my back molar with my tounge ring and I have been in so much pain that goes up my face into my eye and ear and if ur like me and can't afford health insurance to go to the dentist you get willing to try anything the best thing that I have tried (but tastes HORRIBLE) so if u have a bad gag reflex don't try it but did your finger in a goodys powder and rub it all over your tooth and then take the rest it works

I have a tooth that has broken off completely at the gumline. For the last several days i have used all sorts of pain relievers, listerine rinse, cold tea soaking ect. all helped at first then slowly became less effective and so i have ended up here... Someone mentioned a Vodka soak, i don't do vodka but did have some 90 proof whiskey so i gave it a shot! feeling much better now as it seems the alcohol has numbed the exposed nerve completely and i must admit i feel like a new man! toothache pain can be impossible to endure if severe enough, and can make a person loose their sanity literally, i've been there and hope everyone finds relief! Kudo's to the Vodka poster!

I've got a tooth which has become infected due to damage to the root. Have had the tooth capped and repaired several times over the last 2 years but now its time for a root canal (YUK!)
My face is swollen and the dentist prescribed antibiotic and a serious pain killer (YUK again!) I have to wait 2 days for the dentist so while in the garden I picked a sprig of fresh oregano and stuck it up between my cheek and gum where the pain is and went to sleep. Woke up with less that 1/2 of the pain (at least it is much more tolerable). During the day I rinse with a mixture of water, salt, goldenseal extract, clove oil, oregano oil and prickly ash bark (ground up).
This mouthrinse with the addition of the sprig of oregano between cheek and gum provides much more relief that the vicodan and doesn't impair my thinking.

Toothaches and Pain

Ever had a filling fall out or a pulled tooth that didn't clot right?
I sure have. And I was surprised on what my densist said to me. Tea bags and clover.
For a tea bag, just dampen it, and stick it in your mouth where it hurts and bite down. 20 minutes.

Clover you can just leave in your mouth (if you can put up with the taste )

Had major surgery in 4 sites in my mouth and had all 11 of my mercury fillings removed about 6 weeks ago. The surgery sites healed quickly because the dentist used a technique where my own plasma was injected into the sites. However have been experiencing major pain in my gums and cheeks along with headache once or twice each day. What finally worked for me yesterday was cayenne pepper. Luckily it's one of the herbs that I grow and cloves (regular powdered). I placed cayenne on my right side and cloves on my left. Both worked, but the cayenne burned so much my nose ran, which was great because I believe my sinuses are clogged although the netti pot hasn't helped much. Anyway, it was well worth it because the pain in my face and head were alleviated quickly.

So I have braces and every month my orthodontist puts in a new wire, so for the next 2-3 days it hurts like crazy! So what I do is I get some ice cold water, and swirl in around in mouth for as long as possible. I spit it out, and then swirl some more. If that doesn't work, I get some tissues, and I fold them into a tiny square about 1/2 an inch thick. I place it on top of where its hurting the most, and I gently apply pressure and bit on it for as long as possible. This does hurt a little bit more, but it totally weakens the pain, but when you take it out it hurts. Hope this helps!

This is now my 3rd infection in as many years after two wisdom teeth grew in and started causing chaos in my mouth. Unable to afford extractions, I tried every remedy I could find and tried my best to ride out the pain. The last two, I was blessed to have leftover hydrocodone to help numb the pain a little. But this time, I had nothing but naproxen sodium (Aleve) and a house full of home remedies that just didn't work on an open infection inside a broken tooth. I tried everything, even benzocaine ointments, which only made the pain worse.
But my saving grace came in the form of curiosity. I had heard that cloves were supposed to help, so I bought some whole ones since I couldn't find the oil. I put one in my mouth and bit down. The oil numbed EVERYTHING. I wanted to cry out of sheer joy. But, of course, the relief was only temporary. Later, as I was looking at the tiny bottle, I saw the website for McCormick and that they had a recipe for Chai Tea. Overcome by curiosity, I tried the recipe.
Point? I feel fabulous! The pain is gone! Not only have I found a great drink for the cold weather, but I have actually found something that works!!! Doesn't mean I'm stopping my regular Listerine gargles, though. And you shouldn't either. The antiseptic power-play in the Listerine, cloves, cinnamon, and tea have left me feeling better than I have in days! I can even cut back on my naproxen! (And am finally able to get rid of the troublemaker tooth that's been bothering me!)

These web sites have alot of helpful information. Especially when ur desperate in pain like u never imagined possible. I was barely able to focus when reading these remedies. Tooth pain is no joke. IT completely takes over I was feeling so hopeless while the throbbiong and pain grew extensively. I tried a couple of these remedies. Motrin and other pain killers didnt work on the second day, that was worst thing i didnt except. I was trying remedy after remedy but the pain wasnt even fading away. Then i came across pure Peppermint extract 89% alcohol. U will never believe how this was a complete miracle. Its immediate relief, but on my first experience using this the pain faded away little by little. Now i tab some on my tooth and on my gums surrounding this tooth. Anybody who trys this will know what i mean. Its strongly flavored and will be a little overwhelming in the mouth but it disapears cery freshly.

If the last upper or lower tooth (used for chewing the food)/wisdom teeth is paining frequently (periodic/cyclic pain), please try the following tests & apply suitable to your case for a temporary relaxation during odd hours until you meet a dentist -
1. Try a chewing-gum gently. If get relaxation then continue for sometime. This causes a sort of gentle massage to the tooth.
2. Try some hot or cold drink for a test (may try an alcoholic drink like vodka/whiskey responsibly). Whichever gives relaxation use that during the pain but manage the intake responsibly so that it does not affect the health otherwise.
3. Try to eat some soft nuts like cashew nuts if you are comfortable with that.
4. Rinse the mouth with slightly warm salty water & then spit-out.
5. Try different relaxing positions/sides to sleep & then use the most relaxing position/side as per your case/condition of tooth pain.
6. Try gently massaging the exact or nearby area where you feel pain (Tooth & gum by finger-tip ; Head , ear, jaw by palm). Once you find the best points to massage according to your case then keep on applying during next impulse of pain.
7. Try a pain-killer about which you are sure & have knowledge of when & how much to take. Otherwise take help of a doctor/trained chemist as irresponsible intake of medicines can have severe side-effects.
7. All the above mentioned suggestions are only to be tested first then applied during odd hours for temporary relaxation until you can make a reach to dentist. For any frequent tooth pain, advise of a dentist is a must as the cause may be severe and end-result can be dangerous to your teeth.

I have always had really bad teeth. Last year I had them all pulled and got dentures. The dentist did not want to pull one of my molars, said it would help hold my bottom plate in. Its been a year and now the plate has cause this tooth to become loose. For the past few days I cant not eat anything and now am up at 12 am in pain. I have been using BC powders poured directly on the tooth and gum, taste nasty but works. Tonight it is taking alot longer to relieve the pain. I got on here and seen vanilla helps. So I made a paste of the BC and the vanilla and applied to the surrounding gum. After a few min the pain is tolerable. Dont rinse your mouth afterward or you will wash away the powder.Nasty but well worth it.

Ok so my boyfriend has had this major toothache for days now and I mean he needs major work done on his teeth, they are really bad....I read several remedies on here and tried the vanilla extract but it didnt work for him, I have been putting a wet, hot towel against his jawline and it eases the pain, but the one remedie I found that really does work...dip a q tip in some tequila and rub your infected gum with it!!! WOW....Folks it really is a life saver, he said after the sting from the alcohol the pain completely went away!!! This was done at 4pm and did not have to do it again until the next morning around 9am...Don't put but a dab on a q tip...not enough to get u tipsy or alcohol smelling...

OMG-I could not believe this was happening to me. All of a sudden i had an aching tooth on my filling tooth. this tooth was filled twice and now i feel as if I have to take it out. this tooth is on the bottom right hand side jaw 2nd down(I dont have wisdom teeth).
Woke up one morning and I had a nasty toothache and i kept toching it then suddenly my tooth began to move. i was in severe pain. As the day went pastthe pain started to spread to my front teeth and to my right hand side temples. The only way for me to relive my pain was to goto sleep. Whensearching the page ive seen a couple of remedies such as
:clove of garlic
:saltwater
:teabag
I have tried the teabag and to be perfectly honest it only sorta numbed the paind for 10 minutes. I used a twinings lemon and ginger teabag. But beware it tastes NASTYYYY!!!!!
Saltwater did not help at alll for me andnow im still in severe pain. I hate dentists and doctors and now i soo sleepy that i dream that this pain goes away. Any help for me please I am only 13 and I cant cope with this pain anymore.

hi everyone... I have had tooth aches, well since I can remember. I have a very unique calcium deficiency, and one, rather aweful side effect is my teeth are HORRIBLE. Many are broken, some exposing nerves, and some with only the roots left. I have done many things, some I am not proud of, to alleviate the pain. So finally the soulotion you have all been waiting for... and I'm sure you will have your doubts, but in all honesty meditation. Please don't just read this and laugh. There are ways to block the pain, and although it takes years to master true meditation, you can concentrate on other things. Ignore the pain, yes its extremely difficult, some may think impossible. Just give it a shot. Go with the oldest way to ignor pain, and simply block it out. As a side note... if you work or have school, really get into it. Exercise also helps, since it floods the body with endorphins.

On a scale of one to ten, my tooth pain has been a 14.5 for the last two days. Can't eat. Can't sleep. Can't function (NOT a good thing when you've got a three year old and a one year old running around the house). I've been reading the suggestions on this site for hours, jumping up from the computer to try one or the other. Peppermint extract? Good - for about two and a half minutes. Hydrogen peroxide - OUCH. For a very long time. Swishing ice water - OMG WHAT WERE YOU PEOPLE THINKING? I've never felt pain like that in my whole life. So I've tried everything, including a Percocet left over from my last c-section, and nothing works for longer than 10 minutes. Desperate times call for desperate measures. This was my plan:
1. Brush. Very well, and for a very long time. Yes, it hurts. Yes, you're probably going to bleed. Do it anyway.
2. Floss. Again - OUCH. If you want, try coating the floss with some OTC tooth pain gel. It didn't make MY experience any more pleasant, but whatever works for you.
3. Salt water rinse. Warm water. Swish. Repeat.
4. Alka-seltzer. Yep. Sounds strange, but it has 325mg of aspirin per tablet. I used four tablets, because by this point, it felt like there was a tiny man standing on the edge of my tooth repeatedly stabbing the center with an icepick. Swish that around too.
5. Take a shot of whiskey. You can spit it out if you want, but I recommend swallowing, because step 6 isn't pretty.
6. Coat your entire toothbrush with clove oil. Don't go easy on it - saturate that thing. Then brush the affected area - tooth, gums and all. It burns. It tastes horrible. If you accidentally get it on your tongue (or worse, like I did, chapped lips) you're going to wish you'd repeated step 5 several more times. But once you get over the urge to throw up, it takes the pain away.
20 minutes ago, I couldn't see straight. Now, I still have pain, but it's manageable. How long it will last, I have no idea, nor do I know if it will work next time. For now, it's good enough.

I've just read the aspirin powder remedy, and it actually sounds like something that could work, I'd try it if I had aspirin... May I suggest though, maybe adding a drop of water to make a thick paste would probably help it to get in to the tooth a bit better... Almost like an aspirin filling I guess. Also what might work (and I'm not recommending anyone trying this as I don't know what other effects if could have) my boyfriend was once taking nurofen and instead of swallowing it accidentally chewed it and he said it made his mouth go numb... So maybe using the aspirin method with nurofen could work (again... I'm not a doctor, dentist,or pharmacist so I don't know what other effects this could have). What I have found that works in the past though is using a Hydrogen peroxide mouth rinse (3% hydrogen peroxide mixed with water, I think its about half half mix) should clean out the tooth well (try not to swish it around your mouth as you would normally as the movement and pressure caused by this action tends to irritate the tooth and cause it to throb, instead try to just hold it around the tooth and then gently spit, make sure to not leave it in your mouth for more than 20 seconds at a time and whatever you do DO NOT SWALLOW IT! some websites will tell you it's fine to keep it for up to a minute but I was told no more than 20 seconds at a time by a ear nose and throat specialist and surgeon as they use this as a remedy for tonsillectomy recovery as it help to kill bacteria and heal the open wound, I had previously used it for that, and then thought it may help with infected teeth and I have found it
does I have previously had 3 broken teeth that lead to infection and excruciating pain the first resulted in extraction and the next 2 in root canal therapy... I am currently dealing with a 4th broken tooth which also needs root canal treatment, as I noticed the broken tooth before any infection had started my dentist put in a temporary filling to block of and chance of infection... This was done 2 and a half weeks ago... The temporary filling broke off 2 days ago, i booked an appointment for tomorrow to get it refilled temporarily until the root canal treatment as I am currently broke and don't get paid until tomorrow afternoon... But it's too late... It's begun... The horrid throb of an infected tooth :( I have done a peroxide rinse brushed my teeth and taken anti inflammatories... All I can do now is try to get some rest and hope for the best as I prepare for the worst of it.

Before I try to sleep though... Another couple of handy tips:

Another product I've tried for toothache is Xylocane it's an anesthetic numbing gel (basically the gel a dentist uses before a local anesthetic needle) you can get over the counter at pharmacies I thought I would try this on a broken tooth as I had first experienced it in hospital when I had an excruciating bout of tonsillitis, I used to get this about 8 - 10 times a year and would always be in a lot of pain, a few particular occasions ended up in hospital as it hurt so much that it even hurt to breath as my tonsils would swell to the middle if my throat, one hospital visit a nurse gave me a pink jelly like substance and told me to hold it at the back of my throat for 3 seconds... It was like magic... I went from to painful to breathe to chatting and laughing in seconds (my mum even td me to be quiet incase they thought I had been faking it lol) anyways, that was 5% Xylocane which unfortunately isn't available over the counter I'm nut even sure if u can have it prescribed to you if may be a hospital only thing as far as I know pharmacies only stock 3% (the 2% difference doesn't sound like much but it is) 3% still works though just coat the problem tooth and gum around it with it and let it sit and soak in, it should take most of the pain away. (ps this is based on personal experience and may not work for everyone).

Also Hydrogen peroxide is fantastic to soak your toothbrush in daily as it kills the bacteria that lives and grows on your toothbrush. Having a clean toothbrush is important because it promotes healthier teeth, if you don't clean your tooth brush then you are just brushing your teeth with the bacteria built up from every time before that, simply put, you wouldn't wash your dishes with a dirty sponge right?

I wish you all luck with whatever problems you may be experiencing, as I'm sure a lot of us know it is not a pleasant experience and one best avoided if possible.

I think the only thing that helps it to get the bad tooth out! That being obvious, but not always an available option there is a brand of tea called 'Licorice Spice' it has Chinese Anise, Clove, Vanilla, Cinnamon, all the things that people recommend packed into one and it does help. I placed the back on the tooth for a bit then when I got relief I would sip the tea that I made with it....Hope it helps a little. The experience of tooth pain is a horrible one and I am 8 months pregnant to boot! *Sigh* Good luck all

My husband was in pain for weeks because of a tooth. Seeing as we do not have dental insurance going to see a dentist was not an option for us. So, I looked online and ran across this site. Thank the Lord! I ended up combining several techniques, first we tried a warm tea bag... not so successful. So I then warmed up some water and added 2 teaspoons of ground gloves and 2 teaspoons of sea salt. I mixed up really good and let him gargle and swish it around where the tooth was bothering him. He said this was awesome! It took him 3 or 4 times before the pain was almost completely gone. He then swished some cool water around and then put some vanilla extract on the tooth using a qtip. Awesome! Hope that this can help someone else! God Bless!

When I have some tooth pain, I always use Anbesol, or Orajel. Anbesol seems to work better though. I've heard Orajel can make infections worse. One thing that always helps is if you swish your mouth around with some strong Rum, or Cognac. The stronger the better. It'll burn at first, but when you spit, the abcess sometimes will burst & relieve some of the pressure & pain. Clove oil is good, but it's hard to find, but you could probably order some from offline.

Always check first with your doctor, but the best pain relief medication for teeth is Ibuprofen. It provides pain relief as well as helping with any inflammation. Drink lots of fluids when taking this as it can cause kidney failure if not taken properly. Another suggestion is laying a moist teabag on the affected area. This contains healing properties as well as pain relief. War salt water also provides pain relief and relief from swelling. Using a moist heating pad can also help with pain, on for 15 minutes, off for 15 minutes. If you leave it on constantly, the nerves won't get a chance to readjust which is where the pain relief comes in. Do not chew on affected tooth.

Assumed Cause : Over the last few days I have been brushing my teeth more (maybe 4 times a day) and deeper. Yesterday I had a fair bit of sugar in the afternoon (well alot), then I awoke 5.30am today with very strong tooth pains at the top back teeth on both sides of my mouth.

I'm pretty sure I have exposed nerves from burshing and the sugar irritated it so I am doing home remedies till the nerve is healed over.

For the short term the best thing is cotton wool buds in whiskey and held onto the area, the whiskey will numb and kill bacteria. Long term if the nerve is exposed dabbing sensitive toothpaste onto the tooth will help to build a layer of protection over the nerve.

This remedy is obviously not for cavities or major problems but if it is just from brushing too hard I would suggest using this remedy.

There is nothing better than excruciating pain by tooth ache. I bet that hell is just an endless toothache on all teeth.

Tried everything. Only thing that takes the pain away is cold water. Third day now. Went to the dentist today, and he couldn't understand which is the tooth causing the pain. I guess is from the too many painkillers and anti-inflammatory medicine i took. He tried air and touch and x-rays. He was between 2 teeth.

I told him to clean all my teeth (needed that) to stimulate them a bit. Then he sent me home to wait until the pain indicates the right tooth.

Well it just did. I cannot even touch it. Dentist said that it is a nerve that has to be removed. Now it's 4am and i cannot sleep from the pain. Went to bed like 6 times. I will wait until 9 and i will call him.
