I have a major toothache in one of my back molar teeth... The best solution is a dentist however seeing I cant go that route What worked for me is 1st rinsing mouth out with water then softly brushing the sore area with tooth paste and rinsing with warm water... then rinsing with a mouth wash... then rinsing with warm salt water..After wards I put a hot rag over my jaw were the sore area is and it worked if u have excedrine that will help take the pain away in less than 10mins...

First off, this is a great resource, lots of possible remedies around that can potentially help.
Personally, my massive toothache was caused by an infection under the enamel, inside the pulp of the tooth itself - The difference to most being that there was no outside damage.. No cavities, cracks, etc. It was all internal. Now, using common knowledge, I can only summise that a great deal of these remedies work due to being placed/washed over affected tooth/cavity which no doubt reduces acid and other effects on the area itself, as well as working to reduce inflammation - Which of course helps you feel better. But, again, mine was not cavity/exposure related.
So, with my unique perspective, I delved into a large number of these remedies as I was desperate for relief. Is it just me or is there a severe lack of weekend dentists? It began Friday night and I am now sitting waiting for Monday morning to come around. I've never looked so forward to a Monday before.
Anyway, in no particular order:
Peanut Butter - No effect. This had absolutely no effect whatsoever. Tasted nice, though.
Salt water wash - No effect. The only effect this had was making my mouth throb even more, actually.
Bi-carb soda wash - Also no effect. The act of swooshing, as above, also seemed to aggrivate matters.
Painkillers - No effect. I used Ibuprofen, and even though its not advised, with the pain I was in, I was popping them like tic tacs.
Ice pack - Yes. I used an ice pack and held it next to my nose (Note: Tooth in question was a front tooth which extends up past the nose obviously) and, while it didn't get rid of the pain, it really helped to take the edge off. I give this 50% success.
Hot pack - Sort of. I've read people say that you try hot or cold, as one will work and the other will not. This is indeed accurate, as sometime ago I had an ache where a hot pack worked wonders. This was the one I tried first this time as well, and pure agony ensued instead. I then tried the ice pack (As above) which worked pretty well. So I believe if one does not work, try the other.
Vanilla Extract - This seems a popular one, and it may indeed work. However for me, it did literally nothing but leave a sweet aftertaste in my mouth.
Whiskey - This was a strange one. At first, I thought the positive effect was instantaneous. Instead, it was merely a 5 second calm before a storm.. And the storm made matters worse. Really worse. I have no idea why.
Oil of Clove - No effect. Well, technically it made the rest of my mouth and my tongue nice and mellow - But did nothing to combat the pain. And it tasted absolutely horrible.
Garlic - Nothing, short of leaving me with a bad garlic breath. And I guess maybe garlic helped my immune system a bit I suppose.. But did nothing for the toothache, however.
That is what I have tried so far. Therefore in summary, the only combat I have against it currently is the ice pack. I am sure that these remedies may work well for cavity related toothaches, as you're applying these directly to affected areas. For mine being internal, they had no effect.
So if anyone else finds their way here with anything similar to what is affecting me, this might help you out, perhaps. Try strong painkillers and icepacks. Its all I've got.

OMGosh, I thought I was going to die. ( Found the Solution) I had a tooth ache from u kno were last week. I thought all my teeth on one side was aching that how bad I hurt. I didnt think i was going to make it, I wanted to do some crazy stuff i felt so bad, i could not think right. I cried like a baby my mouth hurt so bad. No Money, No Insurance. I tried the ADVIL until it didnt work anymore, Packed tooth with DenTek once I completely cleaned the tooth, I tried BAKING SODA until it didnt work any more, WATER until it didnt work anymore, COLGATE ORABASE MAXIMUM PAIN RELIEF until it didnt work anymore, CLOVE OIL which helped for a few minutes but made my mouth raw. The whole time crying like a baby. I started reading this when I ran across na insert and I dont remember who but they saved my soul. They said I needed Amoxicillin 500mg and I remembered I had some from a cold years ago for infection and I ran across some Etoloac 400mg from an accident many years back for pain and at the mercy i took my chances and it worked and it made since, of course Im no doctor. My tooth/ gum was infected and was aggravating the nerve like a mutha F*****. You will need some pain killers to make you rest and relax until those nerves calm down. a week later I still feel the throbbing but no pain its like the medicine is masking them, I need some more Amoxicillin which i order rush online from a pet store another name is (FIX MOX) which is the same. I tried calling around and many stores was forced to stop carrying them without prescriptions. So keep this on the Low so when people are in agony they can find a non expensive solution.
Just remember to relax. Try to get antibiotics to kill infection before you exhaust the benefits of your pain killer because the nerves will become immune to the pain medicine and you are then left to run about naked. I swore up and down that I was going to the doctor when I got better but I havent thought of it, its one of my goals for the future as things financially get better. Hope This Helps. Okay, so here's my story. I'm suffering from tooth pain on the left side on my back teeth or tooth (it's just kind of a general area back there, in my gums.) It's been happening for a few months and I use to be able to cure it with simple fixes: A extra tylenol capsule here, a warm salt water mix there, usually took the problem out.
But the past two days the pain has changed. Now it's causing the area around my ear to throb, and giving my back tooth just a dull-throbbing-numbing pain. And trying to lay down and sleep at night? Forget it. I finally passed out last night, but it was only due to the 2 Tylenol PM.
I read all the home remedies, but it's so hard to try just one, cuz' some people say one thing works wonders, then another four people write back saying it didn't help them at all haha.
I've booked a dental appointment, but it's not for another month, so I have to figure this pain out, cuz' now my saltwater rinses and Tylenol/Motrin aren't helping.
Based on all your suggestions, I'm running out to the store right now and getting these items:
-Sensodyne Toothpaste
-Mouthwash/Mouth Sore Rinse (In something refreshing, like peppermint)
-Salt
-Vanilla Extract
-Whole Cloves
-Whole Ginger
-Peppermint Tea Bags
A lengthy grocery list I know, but i've taken the Tylenol/Motrin and it's not working, and the only relief i'm having is swishing the cold water on the area, enduring the intese blast of cold pain, and then living in bliss for the following 45 seconds with the relief it provides.
I'll do another post to let you know how it goes, and what worked for me. Maybe someone out there is suffering with the same tooth pain that I am, and if I can help anyone rid themselves of this ANNOYING PAIN-IN-THE-ASS..er..TOOTH PROBLEM..then i'm willing to do it. :)

The Best Home Remedy Ever For A Toothache.....I Promise....For Adults Ony!
Start by taking 2 excedrin, right after you take the excedrin put a cap full of whiskey (at least 80 Proof) on the affected tooth. Hold on tooth 1 minute. Whiskey will both kill the pain in seconds and the nerve in just a few applications. Wait 10 minutes so tooth is good and numb. Rinse your mouth with warm Salt Water. Okay so my boyfriend has been dealing with this toothache weeks now. Clove oil worked for a little while but tonight he just laid in bed in tears he was in so much pain, i suggested taking some nyquil but it didn't take the pain away. so out of options i Googled remedies and thank goodness someone mentioned vanilla extract and it worked instantly but just to be safe he also rinsed with mint listerine, he is now sleeping like a baby which means i can sleep. So thanks for these suggestions. And hope everyone else finds relief.

Wow, I have been up pretty much all night dealing with this intense pain from a toothache! Out of desperation I goggled home remedies for tooth pain and got to this site! I must say, there are some very helpful suggestions! Thought I would share what I did and perhaps that will help someone else out! Due to a chronic illness I had some Lortab 10's, these are quite effective for me with my chronic pain yet, it seemed to hardly touch my toothache pain! I was hurting so terribly bad....I was quite tempted to grab some pliers and pull the tooth out myself....but came to my senses! So, here is a list of what I did and how effective it was based on a 1-10 scale, 1 being ineffective and 10 being great. I hurt, but not at all like it was before!
• I washed my mouth out with lukewarm water and as much salt as I could handle, many times….I give this about a 2 I think my pain was too far gone for this to be affective
• I cut a clove of garlic in half and put it against the gums where the tooth is causing the pain……Italian or not…I didn’t care for this experience! I give this a 0 due to the fact that it truly did not work on me. I brushed my teeth immediately
• Next, I drenched a cotton ball with peroxide and rubbed it over my sore gum/tooth area. This seemed to help a little in a couple of ways, one being that I could feel peroxide pulling some of that infection out of the tooth and two, it was a cool liquid on the cotton ball and that seemed to feel good I am going to give this one a 6. This is when I started to feel like it was subsiding a bit
• I was not done…it was still throbbing and just killing me! So, upon further reading what others did I decided to grab some cotton balls and put olive oil on them….this was infective….0
• Finally I had had enough…though it was beginning to simmer down I was still in a lot of pain. So, I had some herbal tea I took the peppermint flavor, boiled the water, put a peppermint flavored tea bag in the hot, hot water, I squeezed the tea bag a little ((you want some liquid) and placed the hot peppermint tea on my gums and tooth that are causing these issues. This worked! Not 100% (that will only happen when I go to the dentist!) But it did take away some of the pain! I am now finishing my cup of tea, making sure to swish it around a bit when I take a drink. I will give this an 8-9 ***I should have done this one first!
• The last thing that I did was I took an Excedrin Migraine pill…this too seems to have helped, not too sure yet! I will keep it posted!
I hope I didn’t babble too much! Tooth pain is one of the most intense pains there is in my opinion! Hope it helped!! For those of you who posted these ideas thank you so much!

For a nasty toothache, this may sound weird but if you take a common tea bag no flavored ones, just the regular black tea, wet the bag and hold inside your cheek and gum, IT WORKS SO WELL, it draws the pain right out of it. I was desperate for help and tried it works great. Tea bags are also good for bee stings, takes pain and swelling right out

I just want to thank the individual who suggested chewing crackers to a paste and putting that in your broken tooth to stop the pain. It worked. Saltine crackers. Amazing. I plan to try some of the other remedies next time (unfortunately there's always a next time with me and toothaches), but today all I had on hand was the crackers. THANK YOU.

NYQUIL NYQUIL NYQUIL! I have tried everything on this site except for extracts (vanilla almond etc.) nothing worked but nyquil DOES, just swish around affected area. No need to swallow it (unless you actually want to go to sleep) and BAM in minutes your toothache will diseppear

So, I've been here time and time again when I've had a toothache; one of my teeth on the right side is basically done for, there's an epic hole in it, but I have no insurance and can't afford to have anything done about it. It's gotten to the point recently where I've been waking up with headaches and ear aches from the pain (it usually tends to get really bad around this time of year.) So, for me, taking a few aspirin works, but I try to space out the days that I take them because it comes ineffective really quickly. But, I'd suggest just brushing really well, picking out anything you might have missed, warm water/salt rinse, mouthwash, and then peppermint oil. That's what I did this time around, and it's worked for the most part, although the peppermint oil isn't as effective. Vanilla extract works pretty well, and I've been having decent luck with swilling cold water on that side, and holding the bottle against my face. For the record, be careful when using peppermint oil; it's extremely numbing, to the point it burns more than numbs. Use a cotton swab to apply it, and expect a burning cheek/lip if your tooth is in the back.

TRUST ME! If you want to get rid of your toothache this is what you need. Go to the pharmacy or grocery store and buy 'red cross tootache' medicine. It will numb the nerve instantly. It taste bad but it will numb you as if you just had a big fat pain relieving shot in your mouth. I suffered from by far the worst toothache ever imaginable. I cried so hard and literally wanted to pull my hair out. When I tried the red cross toothache medicine it immediately numbed my tooth for days. Most people say that it numbs their tooth for hours up to a whole day. I also have a backup suggestion. Usually where there is tooth pain there is possibly an infection. What you will need is amoxicillin. You don't need a prescription from your doctor. You can find it at your local pet store in the fish department. It's pure amoxicillin in a capsule and it ranges from 250 to 500mg. One of the earlier posts on here mentioned that you should take 500mg twice a day for 7-8 days?? Can't really remember but I took 500mg 2x a day for a week and the infection vanished. I even told my dr about it once I got in and he didn't even object to the idea. So go to your petstore and get fish mox and then go to the pharmacy and buy red cross toothache medicine. You will numb your tooth completely and kill your infection with the antibiotics. If it works you can thank me later. If it doesn't,....I'm very sorry.

Midol works wonders!!!! I have had a terrible aching tooth for 3 days and nothing would stop the throbbing. I then remembered how awful my monthly menstrual cramps are and what worked to take them away -- MIDOL! 30 minutes after taking the midol, the throbbing ceased! BTW -- Midol is not just for women... I have had male friends take it for body aches and they told me it worked for them too.

When:
Gargling Did Not Help.
Pills Will Not Help.
Orajel..pshh..Does Not Help!!
Hands down Pure Lemon Extract. I have a gigantic hole in my tooth and the pain is excruciating. I took a small piece of a cotton ball..soaked it in the lemon extract and stuffed it in the hole. Be careful not to put too much or it will burn the hell out of you! It will take about 30 seconds and the pain will ease up and go away for a while...long enough for you to go to sleep =D.
I really hope this helps you.

I have been in a lot of pain since Monday with a back tooth that I cracked on a pretzel. I also have a horrible cold (could potentially be sinuses). I am hoping the pain is more from sinuses than my tooth. However, I have tried tons of ibuprofen and the pain remains with no sleep. I have taken 2400 mg since 2 this morning. Not all at once, 800 mg at a time. I have been taking ibuprofen at the same dose since Monday with no relief. Today I decided to heat up my mixture of 60 oz. distilled water, 1 dandellion root tea bag, 1 tbsp. of sugar free cranberry juice and 2 tbsp. of lemon juice. You can find the directions listed here: fitness-weight-loss.info/?p=43 Anyway, I drink about 16 oz. at a time throughout the whole day. The pain was so bad just to sip it at room temperature. I microwaved it for about 1 1/2 minutes. Not too hot because that will hurt too. I used a smaller microwave, so a larger (better) one might need just 45 sec. to a minute. Believe it or not, the pain has subsided drastically. Right now I don't even notice it and I have only had about 8 oz. of my tea. Here is the great part to it. The concoction I am drinking is a natural diuretic and should help you lose up to 5 lbs. in 7 days if you drink it daily. You can get the tea at any health food store. I don't think GNC has it though. I got mine at Whole Foods / Wild Oats. However, I needed someone to help me find it. Good luck! Tooth pain sucks. I will repost later and let you know how long this worked. Please take note, I DID NOT take 2400 mg of ibuprofen at the same time and do not recommend that. It can't help you to do that, it can only hurt you. I know the ibuprofen is not what helped, it might be contributing to it though.
I also have not been sleeping since Monday. I hope to do so as soon as I get out of work today. Thanks for all of your advice. It is great to know we can help each other.

I had a bad wisdom tooth and could not aford to go have a root canal. I had seen something from a movie and the pain was so bad I was willing to try anything. Simple OIL of CLOVES. It was just like taking a shot of noviecaine.
Caution if you use to much it will kill the nerve in your tooth.

(a) I rinsed the area with peroxide (b) I applied ambesol to some dental floss and flossed.(C) applied ambesol over the top and sides of the tooth.(D) I took 800mg of motrin. With in just a few minutes I have relief and am pretty much pain free. Not sure how long it will last but have supplies ready should the pain start to come back.

Hello everyone! Hope everyone's teeth are doing ok today. Mine on the other hand, all i can say is, why do teeth need nerves? Why can't they just be a bone?
Ok, so I have been know to let my teeth get so bad before I Do anything about it via dentist.
Needless to say I have have gone through about 50 tubes of orajel, anbesol, Dr. Sheffield's etc. They no longer work for me and the day I Noticed this, i curled up and cried like a baby.
Well, today I woke up to what feels like a gun shot to my tooth and for some reason I wish it were a gunshot to my tooth. So here I AM reading all of your replies and I have to say thank you, thank you , thank you, to the ones who said to mix different things.
I have mixed the perfect drug for tooth ache pain and I Want to share. I have mixed warm baking soda, orajel severe pain formula, and real aspirin! The moment it hit my tooth, all my pain went away. I am shocked! I been crying real tears over this damn tooth for days now. I can not believe that this worked like it did. I mixed up a tub of it and am holding on to this stuff for dear life. It has now been 10 minutes and it is still working. Unbelievable! And I can not help but wonder why this is not on the shelf yet?
My tooth is bad too! I know I Have an absess, i know i do. BUt to add to that it is almost compleatly rotted out and the nerve is very much exposed.
I Hope hat all who have a tooth ache, even as severe as mine was, will try this.
Good luck to everyone with their teeth. I know how bad it hurts and please promise if they hurt you will try this. It is still working 20 minuted later. Thank you for reading and I Hope it helps you as much as me. I would not wish a tooth ache on my worst enemy.

Okay so I am no doctor, I was in immense pain last night after dealing with a toothache for 6 days, the first day I was able to subdue the pain with a couple of tylenol, but as time progressed so did the pain and the pain medication. This is not the first time this has happened to me, so I immediately knew what the problem was, one of the exposed roots of my decayed teeth had become infected. Now as most of the people that have already posted here know an infected root is unbearably painful. long story short by the time I got to this page, I had already taken 5 325mg acetomenophine, 2 Ibuporfin 800 (prescription) and 4mg of Dilaudid ( this is a very strong pain medication usually given to cancer patients that deal with moderate to severe pain. NONE of them were helping, the problem was that I was taking nothing to cure the infection which is what was causing the pain. I have no medical insurance and a trip to the doctors office can be very costly, not to mention that after going to the doctor OR dentist you still have to fill the prescription. so I started looking around. please bear in mind that this remedy is not a quick fix and you will still have to deal with a couple of days of extreme pain. Which some of the other remedies on this page may help with. But if you want lasting relief you HAVE to kill the infection. and to do that you need antibiotics. Which is the reason for my post. after doing a bit of research I learned that Amoxicillin is what 95% of doctors and dentists will prescribe to cure and infection. problem is you need a prescription to get it. NOT TRUE!!!! Head down to your local pet store, and find the fish isle. There you are looking for a product called Fish Mox, it usually retails for around 5 to 10 bucks. The tablets come in either 250mg or 500mg tablets. To kill the infection you need to take 500mg every 8 hours for 7 days. the amoxicillin in fish mox is the same stuff as you get from a prescription and it works! I bought a bottle on my way home last night from the ER where they refused to give me more pain meds, course it'll still cost 500 bucks for the visit, but I had to do something. so my advice would be to find some nyquil, take it about 15-20 minutes before your ready to sleep and then use one of the other remedies to soothe the pain long enough to fall asleep, usually the nyquil will keep you asleep for a few hours. then try to sleep as much as possible as that's the best route to avoiding the pain. It'll take a couple of days for the amoxicillin to kick in and kill enough of the bacteria to provide you some relief but it will kill the infection. I have read on here how some of you go for weeks with this pain. I can't see how you do it. I can't go for a day with the pain. So get the Fish Mox, some nyquil and whatever your going to do to kill the pain to fall asleep and sleep till you can deal witht he pain. remember to take the amoxicillin every 8 hours and you should be good to go for a few months or at least long enough to get to the dentist.

It dosen't hurt now. I can sleep.
I have no insurance and have had severe tooth pain for six months now. I feel for everyone in real pain on this web site - wish you the best in solving the pain problem.

This sounds crazy but nothing else was working for me anymore - peanut butter! I think it must have something to do with the oils in it. I put a dab on the gum by the tooth and almost right away the pressure and pain stopped.

Today I am without toothache pain. I went to the Walgreens to get some Red Cross that others have talked about but they were sold out. So I ended up getting Ambesol xtra strength, Sensodyne toothpaste and some Dent's Toothache gum. I used the Ambesol in the parking lot, it worked for about 3 minutes, waste of money. Got home took 2 200mg ibuprofen, then brushed my teeth with Sensodyne and put on some of the Toothache Gum on my affected tooth and hoped for the best before I went to bed. After about 20 minutes or so after the ibuprofen and my nerves were settled down I slept all night long without pain. Woke up without pain. Hopefully this will last long enough for me to get an appointment to see a dentist.

The best thing I have found to use for tooth ache pain is Hurricaine gel. It is a topical anestetic, just like the dentist use just before giving you a novocain shot. Best of all you do not have to use a lot of the gel to kill the pain and it lasts for hours. This can be purchased at any pharmacy without a RX. Hurricaine Gel comes in different flavors, however I have found that the original without flavor is better and does not taste bad at all. The anesthesia is accomplished within 15-30 seconds. Now that is fast!! Hurricaine Gel can also be used for Cold Sores, cuts in gums due to braces, loose teeth, etc.

Oregano. I woke up this morning with the worst ache from a back tooth cavity ever!! I also tried to get some sleep but couldnt, since it hurt so bad. So, I tried placing some Oregano flakes on my tooth like I did last year, and I feel NOTHING right now. Last time I tried it, I was able to eat and drink for FIVE DAYS with NO PAIN!! I also mixed warm water, salt and Oregano in a cup and swished that, It helps for about the same length of time as well. Hope this helps. Believe me, if no one knows how worse that cavity pain is, I do. *smile*

Try a Black Tea Bag... I used English Breakfast. Directions: Put hot water soaked tea bag directly on and around tooth and gums. Brief story... my wife's tooth was KILLING her... tried to go to a minute clinic on a Saturday for pain killers... CLOSED! Remembered hearing about the tea bag remedy... got home, grabbed a tea bag, soaked it briefly in heated water and gave it to her. In 'SECONDS' she said 'what's happening? It's gone!' I had heard that Tannin in the tea bag soothes tooth aches. She said it DEFINITLY minimized the pain to almost gone. At least it's temp. relief! Hope it works. Now I have a happy wife! At least temporarily. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!!! :)

Most OTC pain medications work well, but NSAIDs tend to work better as they work on both pain and the inflammation that causes it. Ibuprofen (motrin), ketoprofen (orudis), aspirin, Naproxen (Aleve) are examples of NSAIDs. If any of those medicines do not work alone you can try adding 1/2 to 1 full dose of Tylenol (Acetaminophen) to enhance the pain relieving effects of a NSAID. This can probably only be done with the tylenol as it works differently then a nsaid. Combining the same type of pain relievers is a bad idea though so _Don't_ take 2 NSAIDs together, instead take something like ibuprofen and tylenol making sure not to exceed the recommended dose on either.
Another pain med option is the topical meds that you can buy most anywhere. Most are 'caine' anesthetics that work great for acute/sharp pain for short periods. Dipping a cotton swab in the stuff and holding the swab between the tooth hurting and the cheek may help. An alternative you could try is mixing the liquid pain releiver with a little bit of petroleum jelly to get it to stay on the tooth a little longer.
Oil of Cloves also is a good choice and usually works better on chronic/nagging pain then 'caine' type anesthetics (it is also called Eugenol which is the same stuff dentists use to numb up the gums and often gives their offices that odd spice aroma). If you can't find it in the medicine isle, cloves from the spice rack also work (they also contain some of the oil) but is a weaker alternative. To use regular cloves you will need to chew them a little to get the oil to release, then put the chewed up cloves between the hurting tooth and cheek and change as needed.
Changing the pH of your mouth sometimes helps. Try gargling a flat diet coke/pepsi/or fruit juice to make the mouth more acidic. Conversely you can also try some baking soda in water to make the mouth more alkaline. Which type works will depend on what pH is aggravating the pain.
Teas containing mint or other herbs often sooth by both increasing the acidity of the mouth and/or by virtue of the herbs themselves by calming the sensitive nerve or by reducing inflammation.
Rinses can also be used to help abscesses drain. Examples would be salt water rinses. Household Hydrogen Peroxide antiseptic can also be used as a mouth rinse by diluting it with equal amounts of water, taking care not to swallow it.
Another option is covering/filling the cavity causing the pain. Nowadays you can find temporary tooth filling kits in most stores that usually combine a cement type filling powder and eugenol pain releiver, or some other combination of materials. These fillings tend to last anywhere from a couple of days to a week. I recommend getting 2 filling kits as it takes a little practice to get it right.

First off, I would like to thank everyone for submitting their tips... even if none of them worked for some... Its the thought that counts.
Briefly; I'm currently in Canada, originally from the UK. My insurance doesn't cover dental, having just paid off $3000 last week after a dog bite I find myself broke... Dentist is out of the question, I would pull my teeth in a heart beat but due to how back they are (potentially wisdom, girlfriend claims otherwise) I would just end up making it worse.
It's currently 3:30am, this is day 4 of no sleep...I'm not entirely sure what set off the tooth this time, normally is massive intakes of Dr Pepper... but, it's obvious I have a cavity. The peanut butter trick almost worked, by the time I got to the laptop again the pain was back.
My kitchen currently looks like a homeless man has gone in, and opened every product having a little food taste. I have currently taking over 200 tylonel and close to 25 advil in the past 48 hours. I do believe i've got somewhat immune to the thing... it did work, now it doesn't.
Now for my tip. I've been suffering with tooth pain for a good 2 years now, not really finding a cure, knocking myself out with drugs normally though this time seems alot worse. What I do find to make the pain go away, and trust me this will sound awfully weird... roll your eyes... I know it sounds crazy, I close my eyes, and constantly roll them up... the eyes start to hurt after a while, but after a good 15 minutes the tooth pain has not completely gone by calmed down.
How did I find this? well around 3 months ago, i was sat in the kitchen with garlic in my mouth for 4 hours, and ended up rolling my eyes upwards out of pure tiredness, I have no idea why....the tooth suddenly calmed... I figured it was due to the garlic, but 3 months later here I am... I know this isn't a great tip, but lets face it most of us are searching during the middle of the night and can't get to a store...
anyway yeah, off to try the tea bag!

I have been suffering with extreme toothache pain for the past two weeks or more and nothing was working for me not even the strongest of pain medications, well last night i tried something that a friend of mine suggested and boy did it ever work and i was able to have a decent night sleep. Last night i was in agony from a bad tooth i have and my friend told me to try massaging my hand in the area of where my thumb and first finger form form a v shape so i did and i was amazed after massaging that area on the side of where the toothache pain was ... i massaged it for about 2 minutes and it took the pain away and it lasted for hours, i tried it again this morning when i awoke and the same thing, no more pain the whole morning. Thanks to my friends advice i am suffering from no more toothache but i still have my dentist appointment booked in 2 weeks time. The massing of that area has something to do with a pressure point and nerve endings ... i hope this is of some help to anyone who has a toothache although because it worked for me doesn't mean it will work for everyone.

I have been having bad teeth since I had my second child. Not taking enough calcuim and lack of care put my teeth in pretty bad shape. I have over 4 bad teeth and have no coverage for a dentist. I save enough money to see one so hopefully I get some tooth love. Some of the tricks on this webpage has help out alot not just with the treatments. Yet knowing I am not alone with this(that by itself ease some of the the pain I feel).Yet I do have a trick up my sleeve. Now this help for a good hour before you have to do it again. First you swish your mouth with mouthwash. Do it till it burns or you can't stand it no more. This will make sure that your mouth is clean. Then you get a piece of foil and a crush asprain and a little bit of salt. Then mix the crush asprain with the salt and dab of water to get a paste. Then you put the paste on the foil then on the tooth that hurt. It start to work in one minute and last for an hour aleast it did for me. I also add a dab mucle rub on the side of my face that in pain. Then I cover my face with a scarve to get area very warm. The pain stop and I start to feel better. I hope this help and one more thing I know this is hard thing to do but try to RELAX if you don't it just makes the pain worse. Mind over matter is a very powerful thing. If you try everthing on this page and still in pain. Go for a walk read a very good book , Watch a good movie. Do anything and everthing to forget about the pain. Cause as long you think about it the more it will hurt....SAD BUT TRUE!!!!.....And about sleep time don't force it. It will come time your body will crave sleep more then worry about pain you will pass out(belive me I went two days with out sleep because of my tooth. I finally pass out and went to sleep for six hours...lucky for me I am a stay at home mom and my husband was on vaction.) There is a sad but posite side to this you end up for a high tolarece for pain :)

To ease pain from a toothache place either ground clove or pure food grade clove oil on the affected tooth. This has worked better than Vicodin to relieve pain from a toothache.

I was in such agony last night from my back wisdom tooth, I couldn't sit still! I came online to look up ANYTHING to help me. I saw a couple of entries for Vanilla Extract, so thought what the hell! I ran to cupboard, scrambled to find it and I first poured a capful and swished it around my back tooth. Then I swabbed it with the extract to make sure it was ON tooth. All I can say is WOW. It cut my pain down about 80%! I took 3 ibuprofen too, and I was finally able to go to sleep and feel like I was in control again.
Thank you to those who write these remedies down. This was a life saver for me.

I've tried everything: salt water, Orajel, Listerine, peroxide, Cepacol, etc. The only thing that has worked for me is: 1) brushing my teeth, 2) swishing the tooth with Theraflu warming relief for a least one minute and lastly, #3) applying the paste of activated charcoal and warm water directly to the tooth and gum. I've been pain free for the last few hours. I can't be sure if this will work for everyone but applying this solution in this order has kept me from laying on the couch in the fetal position praying for sleep to take over. In fact, it is the only remedy that has lasted this long.

Okay, so i'm BACK from the store(I posted a few hours ago with my PLAN)and I just got doing a list of home remedies that I found from this site. As of now? I'm completely pain free!!! How long it will last? That's gonna be another story..
Heres what I did:
1.Sensedyne Toothpaste, Applied GENEROUS ammount to toothbrush and brushed.
2.Listerine Mint Flavor, Swished five times in a row, for about 15 seconds each.
(THIS IS WHERE I BEGAN TO FEEL RELIEF)
3.Salt & Warm Water, swished half a cup of that
4. Oragel tooth desensitizer, applied to the painful area.
5. Sensodyne, another tooth brushing.
6. Listerine, another mouthwash rinse
7. Vanilla Extract, combined that, salt, mouthwash and a little hot water for warmth and did a final swishing.
9. Garlic, chewed on it.
10. Sensodyne, another tooth brushing.
11. Sport Rub Creme, rubbed on the outside of my cheek, and around ear where it's throbbing.
haha, okay, so it was KIND of overkill, but I'm desperate. It's finals week at my college and I can't be in pain!! But like I said, I'm pain-free right now..but we'll see.
I'll post one more time in a few minutes to let everyone know if i'm back to pain. (If I am I have a couple more tricks up my sleeve to try..then it's the emergency room!)

For me what worked was swishing ice cold water around in my mouth. If you need a root canal because the nerve is dying then the cold water will break down the gases that build up in the tooth. Trust me i was in SEVERE PAIN. Now if you need sleep and cant stay up all night swishing water around then go to the ER. They can write you a prescription for heavy duty pain meds and will give you a shot of pain medicine so you can sleep. Trust me i was in EXTREME PAIN and a temporary fix is ice cold water

Did not take the pain all away but most of it. I soaked a qtip in it and held it on my tooth.

I was in such incredible pain last night, I got absolutely no sleep and was still in such pain this morning, I could concentrate on nothing buy my throbbing mouth. Like many on here, I don't have any dental insurance nor enough cash on hand to pay for care. I tried about 3/4 of the suggestions on here. A lot of people suggested the oregeno, but that did nothing for me other than irritate my mouth with the dry flakes. The vanilla worked a little bit, but my pain was too severe for it to help much. Two things did the trick, however, particularly when combined with alternate doses of ibuprofen and tylenol (recommended dosages only). The first was to apply a generous dab of toothpaste to the painful area. I had read that Sensodyne was particularly good for this, but had none on hand and so ended up using Crest gel with Scope, which worked extremely well. The minty blast really offset the pain, which totally surprised me because my pain was so severe (and I can tolerate a lot, having given birth four times). A second remedy I strongly recommend having on hand is a product called 'Dent's Extra Strength Toothache Gum,' which I found at Walgreens when I went to check out the other suggested remedies. This stuff is amazing! It comes as a small, very thick stick of medicated gum. You cut off just the right size to cover the exposed area or crack of the painful tooth. I worked it between my fingers for a few seconds to soften it a bit before gently pressing it into place. It has not come lose and it is now going on three hours since I put some in. It not only keeps air and moisture from causing surges in pain, but the medication works to sooth the entire area. It was not expensive, either, around $5 or $6 at Walgreens I think and worth every penny. Good luck to everyone!
PS--Michael, I could not believe how much pain killer you took. Tylenol is a known safe drug, but can be a very toxic one if you don't follow maximum dosage instructions. I hope you have not done any permanent damage to yourself.

Okay, I'm a big baby. And dentists are sadists: I'm getting a tooth extracted tomorrow (I agree: root canals only cause more problems later), and the dentist (who I saw earler today) didn't prescribe anything for the pain I was enduring. 'The soonest I can see you is tomorrow morning....')
Enough complaining: I was trying everything, with limited success. Like most, ibuprofen and even Nyquil stopped working for longer periods; I was needing a fix every hour..which left me with sleeplessness.
So, I retired to my computer and I thank you all for your suggestions...namely misery loves company, and reading these kept me busy with my mind off the pain. I
I tried a couple but what really worked for me was the SPORTSCREAM on the cheek outside the toothache. I used ICY HOT: BEWARE: my eye right above the cheek was watering and irritated something fierce: I had to wipe off the cheek with cool water, BUT the pain lessened considerably... for about an hour.
Good luck.

Everyone was saying that vanilla or almond extract works, so I went to my cabinets and all I had was Pure Lemon Extract... It really worked wonders!! Just be careful because it burns. But it has 84% alcohol..... more than the other two, and it worked instantly!! Putting Goody Powders or BC's on a toothache also works, but only for a little while and it makes the inside of your mouth raw also if you use it too much

Three parts:
If you don't mind taking ibuprofen, take 800mg (4 standard tablets) every 8 hours. It reduces inflammation and will ultimately help with pain.
Oil pulling. Swish about a tablespoon of vegetable oil (untoasted sesame is ideal)in your mouth for as long as you can - at least ten minutes. Suck it through your teeth back and forth and spit it out when you're done - it should be white and foamy when you spit it out. This is good to do without dental pain as it apparently pulls bacteria out of gums as well as out of teeth with broken fillings etc. Rinse your mouth with very warm water and spit that out as well.
Now swish very strong sodium bicarb solution in warm water (about 2T/cup), one mouthful at a time until the solution is gone. With that solution also, keep it in your mouth swishing for as long as you can.
This should give you enough relief to sleep and wait for a dental appointment.

I have been taking ibuprofen for tootheache pain. At first a double dose was necessary, but once the pain subsided, a single dose every three or four hours was sufficient. I also tried the peroxide rinse one night when out of ibuprofen followed by a warm saltwater rinse then put ice in a dishtowel and held it to my palm and cheek simultaneously. Obviously I was desparate and in much pain. My pain did go away in a few minutes after the rinse but started to return so I resorted to the ice. Between the two remedies something worked because my intense pain as gone.

This really works. After waking up in terrible pain, here's are the 4 things I did:
1. First, take 2 extra strength tylenol and 2 ibroprofen. Repeat every 4-6 hours as needed. This will take 20 minutes or so to work. In the meantime...
2. Swish with Hydrogen Peroxide and room temperature water (half and half) for 1 minute. Allow it to bubble. Concentrate on the pain area. It's safe and will also help get rid of the infection. Repeat as needed but at least every 2 hours. To get rid of the nasty taste in your mouth, just suck on a Hall's Cough Drop afterwards.
3. Apply an ice pack to the area in pain. If that causes more pain, try heat instead.
4. Put 4 black tea bags, 4 Halls Cough Drops and 1 tablespoon of whiskey into a coffee mug. Add boiling water, stir until cough drops are dissolved, and let set until room temperature. Swish for 1 minute. Concentrate on the pain area. Save the mixture for later. Repeat as needed but at least every 2 hours.
You could soak a cotton ball or piece of gauze with sore throat spray and apply it to the area for several minutes to help numb the pain.
These together worked like a charm and killed the pain until I could see a dentist.
Hope this helps you. Good luck.

But then I read on-line that chewing whole cloves would work as an antiseptic and antibiotic. So I bought a small continer of cloves, price $2.67. I chewed it and it immediately stopped the pain. I have been pain free all day. And hope to be able to sleep tonight. I'm VERY thankful for this remedy.

Wow! - I love this site. You all saw me through the dark days of a horrible toothache a week or so ago. I wanted to give back and share some of the (many) things I tried during that time also.
I got the best relief from a product called Clovanol (oil of Clove Buds). You can also chew or mash cloves from your spice rack and even add them to olive or veg. oil and put on tooth or gum.
The active ingredient is Eugenol and it helps numb the area and take the edge off. Another really great thing I tried was OregaDent that has several ingredients including Pain Root (Canada Balsam) that was even stronger and really helped.
The doctor prescribed prescription strength Motrin 800mg for Inflammation, but the coating tasted like soap so I just took 4 200mg Advil every 6 hrs. instead. (Check w/your doctor first). I now just started taking InflamEez and Zyflamend to see if I can do that instead of Motrin or Advil for the inflammation.
As my Mom always says, though, 'A toothache is a pain a pill can't touch!'
A product called WOW! Drops also helped. Very minty and strong. I put it on a Q-Tip and put it back by the tooth and it brought some relief.
All of this was for a toothache that was so bad that I was tempted to pull it out with my fingers myself when it got really bad. Pain would come and go, but when it was bad it was the worst pain I had ever felt (even compared to another toothache I had in the past).
Hope something here helps someone. I am going to try something called PerioRub next and see how that does. I don't like to take 'medicine' or chemical OTC or Prescription medicine, so I tried several 'health food store' things. I ordered these online since I felt too bad to go out anywhere.

There is a powder form pain releiver called BC Powder, the powder does not taste that great but if you have a tootache this is a great otc remedy. However for toothaches one of the fastest remedies I know is to take 2 BC powders along with a shot of Gin, hold it in your mouth so the solution is resting on the sore tooth for about 30sec-1min. More than likley your sore throbbing tooth will be nomore in about 45 secounds.

It's not a 'home remedy' but if the toothache pain is severe enough, it's inflamed and infected.. getting to the Dentist is the best bet, but like me you can't always get to a Dentist because of money issues, or the fact that it may be 3AM..
This may sound strange but.. Cold & Flu medication works wonders. Why? Because it hands inflammation, infection, irritation and all other symptoms toothache's generally derive from.
Getting a day/night one works best, that way you can get a night time pill that lets you sleep through the night.
I've had a toothache pain for the last week, and I just tried doing this, I've never slept so sound, and it's the first morning I've woken with no pain.

This may sound a little cazy but it has worked for me. My wisdom tooth is infected and I have been to the dentist. He perscribed anitibiotic and narcotic pain reliever which has not worked on my pain. My best friend told me about the listerine pocket pack strips. She told me to lay a strip on the infected tooth and instantly the pain was gone. You have to repeat this process about every 45mins or so but it worked for me.

For a tooth ache.....this worked wonders after an excruciating night and day of pain. Get some....get ready for this VINEGAR!!!! About 1/2 cup with about 1 tablespoon of salt (do not swallow), warm it up and swoosh around the effected area, within seconds it will numb the pain all the way out!!!!

I have used Caffeine Free Diet Coke to help soothe a really bad toothe ache. And, that has seemed to ease the pain. In fact my own Dentist has even recommeneded that as a home remedy. There is something in COKE SYRUP believe it or not that has healing qualities to it. We used to use COKE SYRPUP for a number of ailments when I was a little child. COKE SYRUP or COKE as in Coca Cola. It's relieving and the pain isn't as unbarable.

I mixed 2 tbsp of baking soda with * oz of water and keep rinshing my mouth with it and soaked a q-tip in the vanilla extract and put it on the infected tooth and the pain went from a 110 to a 25 within seconds! so far this is the best thing that has helped me! i have trye everything, and i mean that! i have a small mouth, and my wisdom teeth take the more appropriate time to start movin an pushin my teeth out of place, 2 teeth have libberally burst in my mouth from pressure and the rest have been unberable,
then theres the general toothache, soething ive become quite familiar with also,
Whiskey, take half a shot, hold it in uor mouth.... works for about 10 minutes if ur lucky, the idea with this one is to get some sleep, make a few hot ones, after you take the shot, ul be out in no time,
clove oil, unnessary, gum soreness, nausias from the horrible smell, and no real relief
heat, hot water bottle as a pillow can work a treat
likewise with cold, depending on the tooth
anbesole, take a tiny square of tissue, soak in this apply to the gum of the tooth, will numb it for about 20 minutes,
do not poke, prod, push, shove, or touch the tooth, while giving instant tiny relief, itl insure ul be in utter agony afterward.......for hours!
ad finally, im not a mass goer, and i was as synical as most of you will be, honestly, but the only fool proof way, dentists could do nothing for me, but give me drugs, that didnt work, the only thing that gave me total and lasting relief, is to get it blessed, theres healers out there, my mam brought me to one guy, an i thought it was a waste of time, next morning, woke up, about an hour later realised wait a minute, my tooth..........no pain! (and i doesnt cost anything!)

The very best thing that worked for me for my toothache, and believe me, it was the worst toothache I had ever had. Was Sensodine toothpaste, I thought it was a fluke, but my brother in law told me it worked for him. Nothing would even touch the pain, so I thought I had nothing to loose.
The peroxide worked for about 15 minutes, I also tried anbesol (a whole bottle in one evening)tried pure peppermint extract (worked for about an hour) I tried all 3 combined. Nothing would give me any kind of lasting relief.
I cannot take regular pain killers because of a medicine sensitivity. I have neglected my teeth for years because of a fear of the dentist.
Not only did one of my teeth hurt, but 4 of them at one time. I have never experienced such pain, I couldn't even tell you my own name.
The Sensodine toothpaste, took the pain almost all away the first time I used it, and I continued to use as directed, it has been one week and I am pain free.
I hope this will help someone else, because it surely was a blessing to me.

I have a cracked backtooth that was waking me up every hour when I was sleeping for weeks.
It was making the whole side of my face hurt with included throbbing head ache.
I tried the vanilla remedy, it did help a little bit, but not enough.
So desperate, i took Tylenol Extra Strength Rapid Blast Liquid, and coated my gums & teeth with Orajel. [ Anbesol works fine, too. ]
I coated everything on the side that my toothache was until i couldnt feel my face, then took a nice hot shower.
No more toothache. :)

I have a cracked and infected molar and am in severe pain - and can't get into the dentist for 2 weeks! Guess this'll teach me to ignore 'minor' pain, huh? After reading most of the posts on here, I finally found something that really worked well for me and thought I'd share. I finely crushed 10 reg asprin (luckily I have a pill crusher), 1/2 tsp baking soda & about 1/3 tube (what I had left) of oragel severe toothace together w/a tiny bit of hot water & a couple of drops of pure vanilla extract- enough to make a thick paste. I applied it w/a q-tip to the sore tooth and it worked almost instantly! Dosen't taste great(the vanilla helps tho) but has kept the pain away for almost 30 min now, and will hopefully last long enough for the sleeping pills to kick in enough for me to sleep. I also rubbed some odor free aspercreme on my cheek (no fumes like icy hot, so no burn). Not sure if that's helped, but thought I'd mention it too. Good luck everyone!

I was never to try to coke/pepsi thing scared me because of all the sugar in soda. I've inherited my mom's bad teeth, years ago i tried the baby aspirin right on the bad spot in the tooth and that worked INSTANTLY, for a few months, after that it made the infected area sting. I tried (from this site) the Vanilla Extract and all i can say i WOW... its been almost an hour and i'm still good! Propolis is made from bee's wax, and is quite an interesting substance.
It's 90% alcohol, but it's abilities as a pain reliever are amazing.
I had a toothache that was getting worse and worse, and I could not sleep. My Chinese wife placed some propolis on a cotton swab and told me to apply it to the tooth.
I did, and the pain was gone within about 5 minutes, and the relief let me sleep all night long.
That tooth has worsened now, and my propolis supply needs to be replenished, but if you can get your hands on some propolis, it's probably a good thing to keep 'on hand'.
Michael sends from China
P.S. I will try some of the other remedies on this site. Thanks to everyone for their information, methods, and of course, comments!!

I took an asprin and got it wet in my mouth and placed it with my finger over the tooth. I held it there til it became soft and crushed the soft paste into the tooth. The pain relief was imediate and lasted about 24 hours.
Asprin seems to blister inside of mouth after a couple of days but well worth the pain relief till I got to the dentist.

It was so painful I was just about to pull the bloody thing out myself. So I tried it & it worked! I cried with relief. Slosh around the tooth for about 5 mins & then hopefully you will feel the numbness I did. Also, I put a small dab of Sensodyne toothpaste on top - good luck everyone, I know how awful it is. For the past 20 years, I had never had any trouble at all with my teeth until recently. I developed a sinus infection and negelcted to go the doctor. The infection settled into my gums and caused the tooth right below my sinus cavity to start to decay. The tooth is now requiring a root canal. THE PAIN IS EXCRUCIATING!!! On top of that, both of my bottom wisdom teeth are impacted and growing at an angle that boggled even the dentist. I cannot afford to have any of this taken cared of right now and have no dental insurance. Thankfully sites like this offer a little hope people like me who have to fight the pain for financial reasons. I have found that by making a paste using BC powders, Pure Vanilla Extract, and Ambesol works really well if you coat the infected tooth with it. The downside is that there is a chance that you will wind up with minor to moderate mouth irritation as a result of the alcohol and the aspirin. I rinse afterwards with warm saltwater. Another thing that I have found works really well is Synsodyne toothpaste. This worked miracles for me. I simply squeeze a little onto the tooth and let it set there for a few minutes. Afterwards, I rinse well with warm salt water. I hope that this helps someone else who may be in pain and best wishes to all who are.

Try this first and save yourself! We tried the cloves, tea bags Darvocet 875 mg, Tramadol, none of it worked, my husband is 6' and 250lbs and the first day the meds worked on Friday. He is also on Amoxicilin and will have to go back to have it pulled hoping Monday but not scheduled till Wed. He even took extra Darvocett hoping it would help, well it didnt even touch the pain and he started throwing up from too much meds. We went to Walmart at 2 am looking for the recommened Red Cross meds but they didnt have it and he was having to swosh water in his mouth to keep the bay at pain every minute, which does work but you do need to sleep! So I got the only thing that looked like it may help, ORAJEL SEVERE PAIN FORMULA LONG LASTING. $5! APPLY IT ON THE GUMS AND IN AND ON THE TOOTH with a qtip, IMMEDIATELY HE WAS PAIN FREE AND KEPT WAITING FOR THE PAIN BUT NOTHING, WE ran to bed hoping it would keep working and it is now 10 am and it is still working! he applied it with a q tip and put it in and on the tooth. Skip all the others rememdies and do this first!!

I tried the clove oil and it didn't really help and it tasted GROSS. however, vanilla seems to be working fine. Now I don't know if it's the vanilla in conjunction with the tylonel but it's helping, i think.
Just dip a q-tip in vanilla and place the q-tip on top of the tooth that's hurting and just keep it there...

1 part bleach 2 parts water, drip the solution in the cavity or over the tooth. Let stand for 4 to 5 seconds, rinse. Do it again, up to 3 times. Make sure to wear clothing that can be thrown away or you don't mind putting bleach spots on. For top teeth, you sometimes have to lay on your back with your head down and over the bed to soak the cavity.
Bleach at this level is safe for the time recommended, and it kills the infection and actually halts decay. It also kills the nerve pain, nearly instantly.
For a quick and non staining solution until you can use bleach, find Tucks brand hemorrhoid pads, drip a few drops of this solution out of a pad, tastes kind of sweet and salty, into the cavity, or with a toothpick, gently pull back the gum to allow in. It doesn't hurt, it doesn't sting, and it doesn't taste too bad. I've tried other brands of the pads in the past, and they didn't work. I don't know why, they said they were the same ingredients.
Good luck. This really works. You can use 1/2 water and 1/2 bleach too, and it really works faster that way, but spit it out after 3 seconds. Always rinse with water, after using bleach. And swallowing tiny amounts of bleach or hemorrhoid solution is not deadly or terribly harmful, but I recommend against it. If you do, drink two full glasses of water, at a calm pace. You'll be fine.

2) Den-temp OP- fill in the painful spot if applicable.

After desperately trying anything that might possibly stop the agony, here's the winner.
Liquid Orajel (the kind in the glass bottle) Apply with a Q-tip.
The kind in the tube made my gums sore and wasn't as effective.
I gently brushed with Colgate Sensitive Enamel Protect, swished twice with mouthwash (and it didn't make a difference what kind I used)
Then I dabbed on the Liquid Orajel.
I've been taking 800 mg Ibuprophen and 650 mg Tylenol every 4 to 6 hrs. RELIGIOUSLY
I ate real food today!!
Still going to take a sleep aid, tonight
Here's what I found with your other suggestions...
Clove oil burns, it's WAY spendy and didn't work nearly as good as the Liquid Orajel.
Vanilla just tasted good
Raw Garlic was a Whole New experience in PAIN!
Hot or cold was comforting to some degree but I was still in agony.
All the other messy concoctions was a waste of time for me.

I went immedaitely to the emergency room after I had broken my tooth & they gave me penicillin for the swelling & infection (oh, I forgot to mention that the side of my face was a balloon)and naproxen for the pain (which did NOTHING) I began to rinse my mouth with Peroxide & water & that immediately made the swelling go down & eased the pain. Well, a week later, the pain has come back with avengence.
I have already tried Ibuprofen, Tylenol extra strength, salt water rinse & peroxide....and nothing. So, i came across this site & tried the vanilla extract & it actually works! Not 100% But enough to relieve the tears & try to get a good nite's sleep!

I am now using liquid origel maximum streangh and instead of using a Q-tip i use a flosser and I put a little on my finger and massage it into the flosser so i can get in between my teeth because I do not have the finances to see a dentist. Also using vanilla extract in this manner works as well. I also drink tea to get the pain to ease up too

I have had TOOTH PAIN for many years and no insurance or money for a dentest so i tried just about everything and if it is nerve pain from a tooth i have a remedy that will work for up to 3-6 months first thing you need is a fresh clove of garlic and the will to want it to go away!!! first cut the garlic down to fit in the area of the pain then make sure that there isnt any of the outer coating on it place it in the area of the pain bite down a little intell the juices and oils of the garlic starts to release from it. then here is the hard part you need to leave it in your mouth for about 2-4 hours!!! that is to kill the nerve but it will grow back the mouth has the fastest regenaration in you whole body!!! it will burn a little but that is burning your nerve!!! thats what you want in about 2-4 hours you are good for a couple of months tell the nerve grows again and repeat the processes.......
For normal tooth pain best thing i found is clove oil try putting on only temp fix though

I'm not sure that short of a dentist you can truly find effective remedies to tooth pain. I am 31 wks pregnant and can't have dental work done nor can I take any effective medications for pain. i was desperate and willing to try anything. First I tried Oregeno, no help, then baking soda, still no help, salt water- you guessed it no help. I drank a cup of tea and rubbed an ice cube in my palm and in the v area between my pointer finger and thumb. I noticed shortly after trying all these remedies one after another that my tooth pain had 'calmed' down. Not sure if one or all of them helped but the pain did not disapear, it only took the edge off so I didn't feel like ripping my tooth out with a pair of plyers anymore.

I saw a suggestion somewhere about using cocoa. Being desperate and going on hour 6 of agony, I came across a packet of Nestle Hot Cocoa mix; tore it opened and poured in my mouth over the tooth. At first the pained stayed and I thought what I just did was stupid...about 15 seconds later the pain subsided to near nothing, and found that let the powder get wet makes a nice chocolaty paste let you can mix on tooth with your tongue. Toothache pain relief.
I used it for wisdom teeth pain relief, for years. These teeth hurt even if they are not decayed or have any cavities - because of the way they grow in the gum, and the roots hit the bone. I was able to put off the extraction for years.
1) Clean you mouth thoroughly. Brush teeth / floss - including tongue; rinse with salty solution – 1 spoon of sea salt to a glass of warm water.
2) Using a teaspoon, apply half or a full teaspoon of sea salt on top and around the tooth that hurts. Just the salt, not watered down. Leave it for 2-5 minutes. (this is going to clean the area of harmful bacteria, and draw out of the gum inflammation). At the end you will see the gum being a bit lighter in color. Do this one or twice a day.
3) Using a dropper, apply just a bit of tincture (I use one with antiseptic properties such propolis or Echinacea); this achieves a two pronged attach - the alcohol numbs the pain while the propolis or Echinacea absorbed through the gum fights infection (no matter how small).
You will feel better, the tooth will bear a delay in dental appointment.
If you do not want the dental work on the tooth right away, and the decay is small and kept at bay this could postpone the trip to the dentist.
Some forms of decay can actually rebuild back the enamel if the proper mouth hygiene is kept long enough.

I have had a tooth ache for about a week now. One day i gargled with peroxide and lightly brushed the aching tooth while gargling and the pain was gone almost instantly. I hope this remedy works for other tooth ache sufferers. I felt like i was going crazy before i tried the peroxide. GOOD LUCK ALL............

if you are an adult and you happen to have any whisky around then dip a cotten swab in the whisky and apply directly to thesore tooth . it will sting at first but it will help the pain and numb the spot . do not drink it just every few hours apply with cotton swap .

I'm no baby, I deal with constant tooth pain--several teeth that need work-- but there comes a time when the infection gets so bad that you have to do something.
Here are a few things that have worked for me from time to time. None of them last for weeks, but they help until you can get to a dentist or emergency room for pain meds.
First is the asprin. Placing one on the tooth/infected area will bring down fever and swelling that results from infection. Take caution, however, using this method in excess will eat away at the enamel of your tooth and cause small ulcers on gums and inner cheek.
Second is the Ibuproferin. My dentist informed me that I could take three regular strength tabs. at the time, six hours apart. Try to take them on an empty stomach (work faster), and wait half an hour before eating.
Maximum Strength liquid ambesol works well for a few moments. (sometimes long enough to fall asleep, after tossing and turning.) My tooth is decayed and infected a great deal, so it felt as though it was burning for a moment. When the burning feeling went away, I spit it out. The Numbness lasted about eight mins.
Wrinsing with either Peroxide (follow instructions on bottle) or warm salt water (make the salt water as hot as you can stand it, and disolve as much salt as will melt into the water.... maybe add a bit more) works well, too. After the salt water, I sometimes have to use an ice pack on my cheek, but it does help kill the infection. Also, Cepacol mouth wash helps at times.
A crushed clove of garlic helps me when it seems that even the Ibuproferin will not. When the infection builds up a tollerance to almost everything else I can throw at it (w/o a doctor), I pack that side of my mouth with a couple crushed cloves of garlic. You may want to cut them in half, and press them into cavities. The Juices from the garlic are natural antibiotics. It may taste and smell pretty strong, but if you brave it, you'll feel much better. Beware, if the infection is extremely bad, sometimes small bumps will swell up on the gums and inner cheek. They are much less painful than the infection that was there before. My Filipino Mother-In-Law offered this advice after I'd spent three days out of work with a tooth ache that had me rolling in bed at night and crying all day, clawing at my cheek... Trust me, I've been there.

I've had a terrible tooth ache for weeks. I'm a single mom with no insurance so I've just been suffering through it. I tried every remedy available, but none worked for long. Finally I tried a combo; I took a capful of wiskey and a packet of B.C. powder and mixed them to a paste with an origel instant relief swab and put it right on the tooth. No more pain!

I want to thank all of you for your help in the remidies. Well, I have a strong fobia of Dentist and have no insurance to see one if I wanted to. Well, I tried the swishing with warm salt water it comes it down quite a bit. I have the red cross and it does work wonders. You can get it by the way from Walgreens and from a store here called Freds. Also, be carefull with the BC because it can cause lots of problems with your gums. I tried denta filling in the tooth and it works for 3-5 weeks. You can get that at Krogers or Walgreens. It comes in a dental kit with something like Red Cross. I have been having this for months and it has calmed it down a great deal. Hopefully I can get the nerve to go to a dentist but now, I have no insurance and no nerve. Good Luck to all and God bless. Sweet dreams

If you have a massive toothache, get some liquid tylenol and swish it around your pain then swallow it. it takes the initial pain away, but for a short period of time, do not continue doing it. just do it to take the pain away, then see a dentist.

I had a toothache for 3 days before getting to the dentist. I found that taking a few drops of peroxide and placing it directly over the tooth then swishing with warm salt water (with peroxide still in your mouth) helped greatly. Do this until the salt water is gone and be sure NOT to swallow any peroxide by rinsing your mouth a few times after wards. For night relief take 2 Tylenol's and 30 ml (adult dose) of Nyquil. Knocks me out until morning with no waking up from the pain.

First of all, never ever ignore your teeth and always check up with the dentist! I hate going there, but i've learned my lesson.
I was in pain today, so i tried the salt water thing and it worked for less than half an hour, then tried it with vinegar, a little less pain, but finally i poured some diet coke into my mouth and kept it without swallowing for 2 minutes every now and then, and the pain seems to fade a little, but not completely.

Mint or mint extract is great, numbs the area, you'll see some posts about peppermint and vanilla, in all honesty a really good temporary remedie is as close as tooth paste. Mint cavity fighting toothpaste and some mouthwash with alcohol, like listerine.
Rinse with the listerine first, apply the toothpaste and then prepare for a night without pain.

Well I am sitting her pondering over all the remedies thinking, which one do I try? Cant go buy anything everyone is closed? So I decided on the vanilla, I must say it took 90% of my pain away, right away. Its been about 30 minutes now and I have about 50% of it back so Im going to go try again. Cloves for dental pain. It really works. I was skeptical, but it came through for me. I was in intense pain for 3 days. I could not sleep at all. I was on Vicodin and antibiotics until I could 'schedule' an emergence root canal. I was at my wits end and finally looked up stuff online. Cloves were at the top of the list, so I went out and bought some cloves, clove powder and clove oil (Eugenol) At first I tried the oil and I stuck it right in th main cavity. The pain brought me to my knees. I had to rinse it out with water immediately. But I stuck to it. I kept dabbing it in there until I couldn't stand the pain, wash it out and do it again. After about ten goes at this the pain went away. I quickly ate a little food and went to sleep. It was actually hard to get to sleep after 3 days of not having it. I woke up 4 hours later with pain again. The oil seemed to have lost its effectiveness. So I started playing with clove powder, making a paste out of it. To make a long story short, after putting small amounts of the paste on my tooth nothing really happened. Finally at 4am, I said screw it and filled my whole gum line with the paste. Tons of it. All of it, in every place I could. And it worked within 5 minutes! And I slept all night, Amen! This was last night. I still have a giant wad of paste up in my mouth and not much pain at all. So don't be afraid to use alot It's funny that dentists don't even mention this as an option, when all the vicodin did was make me puke and feel light headed, while the pain still throbbed. So as a thanks to the internet, I'm posting my story. Tooth pain is the worst, my whole body is still sore. But cloves were a life saver. Everybody is different and I don't know if it will work for you, but it's definitely worth a try. Today I'm doing a paste with the oil to double up and see what happens. BTW, the cloves seem to upset my stomach a bit, but I would rather have that than the tooth pain.

ok so my fail safe method, which a dentist told me, is: take 2 tylenol, 3 ibupropen, at the same time and repeat every 4 hours (do not wait until the pain comes back other wise it is really hard to get it to go away again) also do a warm salt water rinse and a hydrogen peroxide rinse (if it is full strength make sure to dilute with water other wise it will burn your mouth) every half hour... this may not work right away but believe me it will work, i have been doing this for years. if you are finding that this is not workign right away, forget the whisky that is mentioned in one of the earlier posts, and try some graves grain alcohol (let it sit on the side of your mouth that is hurting, and swallow, if you feel like getting tanked, hey that may help you deal with the pain also :) )

However, this morning I tried warm water and Epsom salt....now that worked wonders..( epsomn salt bath can be used for sore muscels, so i figured it should work in my mouth).....
About an hour 2 hours later I swished with equal parts water & hydrogen peroxide...this also started working immediatley.....

For all kinds of tooth-related problems it's hard to beat Dr. Tichenor's. The instructions tell you to dilute it 5 to 1, and that's good prudent advice, but hard times might call for stronger measures, if they get bad enough. Just don't get carried away. And be sure and spit it out. You can hurt yourself with it if you're not careful. Dr. Tichenor's could put about half the dentists in America into another line of work if enough people used it.

Here is my remedy that is as simple as it sounds. take some salt put it in warm water and swish it in your mouth for about 15-30 secs. then apply some teeth treatments such as Oragel. Then take about 1-2 tablets of ibuprofen (if you have of course.)then take some sleeping pills. that's exactly everything i did in that order and it helped me dramatically. you can also skip the sleeping pills unless you want to get knocked unconscious as fast as possible for relief and go to bed. but if you are going to bed you should just skip the ibuprofen unless you think it will help you keep the pain off while you try to sleep. if you do the sleeping pills outta work and you'll sleep like a baby. only unconscious (not literally.) but remember this remedy is for immediate relief and for trouble sleeping due to a tooth aches.
in my opinions of the remedies i've tried that were listed on this site the peanut butter one only lasted for a few seconds (for me.) also the vanilla extract only worked for 2-3 mins but cut the pain down about 50%. once again that was only me. I really hope this works and good luck finding other remedies for your pain if mine doesn't work. please please please email me and tell me if it worked or not. my email is quino_777@yahoo.com thnx!

Baking Soda is VERY effective in pain relief. Get a cup of mildly warm water (extreme cold/hot can further irritate the nerve) and scoup several teaspoons of Baking Soda.
Use this as a dental rinse for approx 5 minutes.
It will provide astonishing relief when everything else has failed.
Pure clove oil is another good remedy.

I have been sick for about a week now, head cold, congestion, etc and a few days ago my tooth/gums started aching. I've been just dealing with the pain but it has become pretty annoying. It hasn't been so much a sharp pain its more like a constant dull throbbing or aching in the gum area right above my tooth. I don't often get tooth aches so I am currently attributing this to my head cold. I have a whole drawer at work full of vitamins, supplements, etc as I am not interested in modern medicine. About 20 minutes ago I took 3 100 mg odorless garlic capsules orally, I had already taken 3000 mg Vitamin C this morning for my cold, and took one extra garlic cap, popped it and applied it directly to the area that has been bothering me. It doesn't taste that great and I think raw garlic would have been more effective but it definitely helped. I let it sit for about 5 minutes, spit it out and rinsed with sea salt and water. The pain itself is gone, I can still feel a slight throb/ache but it is a million times better. Hopefully now I can focus on my job. I will try raw garlic when I get home

I have a corroded tooth, it isn't rotted or rotting, it's just been eaten away at with the soda's and other bad stuff I eat and drink. (Yes I changed my habbits because of this toothache)
Orajel: I love you, you are a great temporary releif, and you sit beside my bed every night right now.
Warm shower/rinse: this does help, the salt water or bakin soda added to the warm water rinse helps as well.
Alcohol: now, here's where things need to be slowed down, I had beer, it helped, one single beer killed the pain for a night. I'd advise non sugar alcohols, there are a few, but if you wanna try a decent oral rememdie in this manner, Listerine, it's got everything you need to kill the germs, AND take care of the pain.
Clove oil: now I personally cannot stomach this stuff but for the breif moment I crammed this into my cake hole it worked, although I got a bit sick from it because of the flavour. (Not for everyone.)
Warm Milk: yes, warm milk, all the nutrients and calcium the teeth need, AND the warm comfort that your nerve needs inside your mouth. worked for me, might work for you, give it a shot, the worst that can happen is you have to try the others again right?
I have yet to try the extracts method, I'll probably pick some up tomorow just to give them a go and see how they work.
In all truth, the best thing to know is your biological comfort, a lot of people like to sit in the cold and bundle up, well in reality, your body isn't quite like that, it needs to be warm, if you have a toothache, it's an exposed nerve, it needs to be covered or brought back to the comfort level of having a tooth around it, warm, and clean conditions. *clean being relative for the human mouth* just keep those few things in mind, cold press is like putting the tooth into hypothermia, not really good for the tooth. I've heard orange juice as a method to help, it really won't, your teeth will have an acid attack, of course the tooth ache will hop on that band wagon and give you a reminder that it wasn't a great idea.
In all honesty as soon as the toothache pops up, call your dentist and go in, the pain is telling you there's something wrong, me, I should have had this tooth out ages ago, but I neglected, now I'm paying for it.
October 21 I get my teeth out, and sure it'll hurt afterwards, but my god, the days following without oral pain, will be heaven.

Brushed with Colgate Sensitive ENAMEL PROTECT, foamed it up good and held it there for a minute. Flossed to make sure there was not hidden food in there. Rinsed with a good antiseptic mouthwash until my gums burned from the alcohol. Globbed on some Orajel Severe Toothache Pain Relief and I was finally able to put down the pliers for a while.
Swallowed some Tylenol PM and went to bed with a cheek full of goo.
Did this as needed for about a week and I could eat again.

Start by taking 2 excedrin, right after you take the excedrin put a cap full of whiskey (at least 80 Proof) on the affected tooth. Hold on tooth 1 minute. Whiskey will both kill the pain in seconds and the nerve in just a few minutes. Wait 10 minutes so tooth is good and numb. Rinse your mouth with warm Salt Water. Then brush your teeth with peroxide and toothpaste. Be sure to rinse your mouth thoroughly. there ur welcome!!!

I had tried everything for my cracked filling pain and nothing worked until I remembered I had dental trays made several years ago for teeth whitening. I rolled up a tiny piece of tissue and put it inside the dental tray at the tooth where I was having pain and put the tray over my bottom teeth. This stopped the pain almost immediately. The reason this worked is because it stopped the suction on my tooth which was causing the pain in my cracked filling. Everytime we swallow, we create a suction in the mouth. This constantly aggrivated the tooth and caused me unbearable pain. By preventing the suction, the pain was gone.

I have been having SEVERE pain under two crowns that have had root canals a couple years ago. I have been popping advil 4 at a time every couple hours, this can not be good for my stomach. The pain feels like my tooth will explode as it gets stronger and stronger and comes strong then subsides for 20 minutes or so. Sleeping has NOT been an option the last few days. I am actually away overseeing a meeting and am at a hotel. I have tried hot soup, cold water, coke, advil..anything I can think off. I was dreading going to sleep tonight until I thought of this and as of right now I am pain free for the last 30 minutes.....I had brought from home a travel bottle filled(plane friendly) of organic honey. I remember the antibiotic properties of honey as I drink 8 oz glass of water with 2 oz of apple cider vinegar and and 2 oz of raw unfiltered honey. I shot that honey in my mouth and basically pulled it through my teeth that are in pain and WELL-A. PAIN FREE for now. WOW, I am praying this helping me get through the next 4 days away from home. Blessing to all of you suffering...it's a nighmare!!

First off I feel for all of you. I had about a quarter of one of my teeth split off exposing the nerve. OWWWWEEEE. I tried several things. Salt water rinse, clove oil, and many over the counter things. Brushing my teeth rinsing with salt water and then adding clove oil to the exposed part worked best. At least I could sleep. Then I went to the doctor at a quick med. and she gave me some antibiotics. After taking the first two the pain stopped. Still taking them with no pain waiting to get to the dentist. So if you cant get to the dentist or cant afford it I recommend trying a quick med. type place. You may have an abcessed tooth and antibiotics may help with the pain.

I went to Mexico and saw a dentist. The post he put into the root canal of my tooth was too fat. It cracked the root 2 years later and so 6 mo. into it, my only option was to get an implant because it is a front tooth...
approx. $4,000+ later. The practices there were questionable, at the time I was desperate to save-but lost. Wish I could do it over. My dentist said I need a root canal on a molar and you can bet that I will not drive 2 hrs. to the boarder to loose again.

To help with tooth ache pain, take one echinacea capsule and add a drop or two of water to make a paste. Put the paste on a piece of cotton ball, then place next to tooth that is hurting. Echinacea is a natural antibiotic, and it absorbs through the gum. This works when nothing else will. It may turn your tongue green, it is from the echinacea don't worry.

I have had a toothache for over two months now. If one side of my mouth did not hurt, the other side did. Sometimes, both sides hurt at once. I went to my doctor (becuase I couldn't afford to go to the dentist), and he prescribed me 800mg of Ibuprofen and 875mg of Amoxicillin. That didn't work. I went back two days later, and was prescribed 325mg of Oxycodene and 500mg of Naproxen. That helped a little. Then one night, I was in agony so bad that I got on the net and found this site. I tried the vanilla extract and a cold icepack. That put me to sleep for the night. Then the next day, I tried clove leaves, brushed my teeth with Sensodine toothpaste, rinsed with Listerine, and washed my mouth out with salt water. That seemed to work too. Then I decided to try one more thing. I went to Rite-Aid and picked up a product called Red Cross. I must say, I felt relief in an instant. It is very inexpensive, and it is a good investment.
So, for all of you who are afraid of the dentist, cant make it to one anytime soon, or who can not afford to go, please, please, please go to your nearest pharmacy and pick up some Red Cross. You will be glad that you did, I know I am!

My s.o. has two broken teeth and no dental insurance. He had to have a wisdom tooth pulled a few months ago and it cost $400.00 +, granted it was considered oral surgery, but the most affordable 'simple' extraction price we've been able to find has still been in the $200.00 range. Multiply that by 2 and we're back to square one.
He has been trying numerous home remedies, and so far staying drugged up on benadryl and sleeping have been the best.
Salt water tends to take away the pain for 10 minutes or so, as well as Listerine.
Lemon juice mixed with salt didn't really help.
We just purchased Red Cross Toothache Medication and will be posting the results if it works.
One thing that he has loved so far as been filling a sock with uncooked beans. We put it in the microwave for about 1 1/2 minutes (be careful as I did read leaving it too long will start a fire). Even though it doesn't get to the root of the problem, it makes his entire face feel great.
Hopefully this will help...we'll post our progress if we come across anything else.

Reading alot of the remedies on this page helped alot but, I have a couple of my own. 1st i'de like to say i'm curious to hear more about this, 'Red Cross' & 'Hurricaine Gel', they both sound very interesting. 2nd I have gone from taking 1000mg tabs of IBProfen and somking a pack of Menthol cigarettes to Swishing my mouth with ice cold water and brushing my teeth with 'Orajel PM'. Being a Pharmacy Technician I actually cant recomend anything, but recently I have had an encounter which required such things as a combonation of everything I just mentioned and more...Good luck to whoever this helps and try to get to the goddamn dentist.

I don't have a remedy except hindsight and getting the infected teeth extracted as soon as you can.
Four years ago I had two back molars (one on each side, YAY!) *break* on me, so I had to get them extracted. They gave me Vicodin for the pain, BUT the rest of my teeth on my right side were still crap; since I have Medicare/Medi-Cal, the dentists around me (Western Dental, even) saw me as a nobody, so I had to get them extracted at the ghetto hospital that accepted my 'insurance'/that my primary care doctor set me up with. They did not listen to me when I told them that I truly needed the entire bottom right (and probably front) row removed and told me to 'take care' of the rest of the teeth after the extraction.
They didn't know (or care, because I DID tell them) that brushing the teeth would make the pain worse and make everything bleed. I've been rinsing with water ever since the extractions, but now those same teeth I was worried about are indeed causing the same amount of excruciating, tears+JESUSCHRISTIWANNAKILLMYSELF kind of pain I experienced before. I still have Vicodin, but I truly don't want to overdose (which I could easily do). Right now I'm only up because I tried the remedies listed here and
-- vanilla extract make it hurt ten times worse (WTF, people? And yes, I used pure vanilla extract)
-- peroxide+water made me throw up (because it tasted like bleach to me, and I'm overly sensitive to the smell of bleach)
-- I will NOT try the clove oil thing because I am ALSO overly sensitive to cloves and cannot be around them when they're smoked, burned or applied to the skin
I did notice though, since I can't chew on that side or even let real food come in contact with that side and have to eat things like soup that ramen and Campbell's Chicken Noodle (I also have a cold at the moment) don't bother my teeth so much, and was tolerable, probably because of the salt content. I got some antibiotics from the doctor today but will be seeing a real dentist on Monday...I just hope I can last until then. I'm sure it's pathetic for my girlfriend to see a grown man cry all the time. :(
P.S. Interestingly enough, that garlic-taped-to-the-wrist thing? Haven't tried it, but I did try rubbing/massaging that spot on my wrist and the pain subsided a little. Maybe it has to do with pressure points?

I know this may sound a little wacky but see if it helps. I had (and still have) an awful cavity. I haven't gotten it fixed yet because I know I couldn't afford it. Either way I got married and I am going to the dentist but the quickest apointment is a month from now. Okay theres the story now heres my solution. Try getting a washcloth (or anything really) nice and warm using hot water and hold that to your cheek. In a small glass put some salt (as much as you can take really) and warm water. Stir it with something (preferably clockwise) and swish with it for 30 seconds every mouthful until empty. Then try sleeping a little more elevated than usual. I hope it helps. It does for me; I have tried everything else. Pain killers, Oral gels and liqiuds, magnets, and sleeping with my head facing east.

Do you get chills, runny nose, headache, ear pains, jaw pain, and some other flu symptoms when you have a toothache?. Or maybe I was so lucky I got both!. I have had a cavity in one of my back teeth for a while; maybe a year or so, and as most of people I have always been ignoring it or just postponing to take action about it. Anyhow, at first it started with a pain in my lower back and some chills, so I thought it could be flu symptoms and tried to stop them with home remedies (mom knows best). by the second day it got worse and by the 3rd day I started to feel the pain in my damaged tooth. I dont remember going through such a horrible pain in my life, but I am 30 years old and it is making me cry like a baby. Like somebody said in this page, the pain was so bad, I was/have been/am feeling the most miserable person alive due to this pain that in the desperation I have even thought of the unthinkable. Yeah!!.. I am not sure how many of you guys are familiar with the movie Cast Away with Tom Hanks, but yeah, that is what I wanted to do in my madness driven by this holy toothache. Just wanted to grab any sort of tool; pliers, hammer, blunt, screwdriver, etc.
But so far there is still a bit of consciousness in me.
Anyways, I have tried every home remedy available in the web and also tylenol, aspirin and ibuprofen. All of them seem to work, yeah. They might take the pain away, but only for a while that at some point they dont work anymore. So, my only advice I would give to you all poor people who are suffering with this torture is GO TO THE DENTIST and GET THE F***** Tooth OUT!!!. Really, I know how you feel about it. One thing I hate in this life is going to the doctor, even worst to the dentist and go through a painful process. But it is the only way.
Good luck!!
ps:Yay! I just found out another home-recipe to take the pain away. Writing! Yeah!.. Just focused on doing something else. Put your mind and all your senses on writing and by the time you are done writing you will realize you felt no pain.. hehe

Mix the following two items for almost immediate tooth ache relief:
Oregon Grape Root Liquid Extract from GAIA Herbs
and
Goldenseal Liquid Herbal Extract from Herb Pharm. You can get both at a health supply store. Apply one filled eye dropper to the effected tooth.
Sure works fast for me. I had put this together a few years ago when I had a tooth ache and had researched a home remedy.

I don`t have an absess and I donot think I have an infection, I do have a broken tooth that I been told is dying so this may only help in this kind of case.Frist take a cotton ball and place an asprin in it then add 3 to 4 drops of peppermint oil to it and about 5 drops of water. Place this in your mouth along the Gum line over the area where the tooth pain is, along with this take about 800 mg of Motrin, It`s been over 12 hours and no pain, I slep for about 5 of that, YEA!!! Once I got up I spit out the cottonball and have been pain free from then on...

This will sound crazy but I broke my wisdom tooth in half yesterday on New Year's Day after popping 3 Loratabs,8 aleve, and two HydroCodine nothing would take the pain away. At five a.m. this morning I was crying and screaming because of the pain. You have to realize I have a huge pain tolerance and have given natural birth to three children this hurts more than that did. I started searching for help. This is what ultimately helped I don't know what exactly did the trick because I did it all at once. Rinsed with peroxide(follow bottle instructions), Drank hot tea, took two aleve tabs, took my daily vitamin ritual of 2 cranberry tabs, 4 Mamopril (all natural breast enhancement pills), 1 vitamin B-12 tab, and smoked a cigarette. By the time that cigarette was gone I felt alot better and it laste for about 5 hours. Good luck

I've had a killer tooth ache in my back tooth for 4 days now, going on 5(yeah could be wisdom teeth).
And some of these remedies I'd like to point out why they work :-D.
Firstly, Medicines like Advil,Tylenol, and applying the liquid ones to the tooth, that is their job and taking too much of these will hurt and destroy your liver.
Cold/Hot on cheek. Yeah a bag/washcloth of ice on the cheek will make it stop hurting, But freezing any part of your body will make it numb. Same goes for warm.
Peroxide.. really? that sounds a little too painful to me.
Diet Coke/Mountain Dew. These kind of drinks cause rotting of the teeth and pains. How can they help?
And one the UK guy who lives in Canada said, rolling eyes for that long..yeah, can see how it works but if you take your mind off the pain by concentrating on that then yes the pain will go away.
Now the two that I find the most interesting and will be trying is Red Cross and vanilla extact.. those have to be the two most popular.

I started having extreme pain in my wisdom tooth last night at about 10pm. It was excruciating. I ran to the drug store and bought some 20% benzocaine gel. This honestly worked miraculously for about 24 hours. Suddenly, about 3 hours ago the pain came crashing back. I honestly tried all these things, but the only thing that really helped me immediately was brushing my teeth with sensodyne and using Listerine like 5 times in a row. The pain instanly went from about a 9 to a 1 while brushing for some reason. It has been about a half hour, I am praying that I can keep it at bay for another 9 hours when I go to the oral surgeon.
Good luck!

I read through quite a number of latter suggestions on this site over last weekend as I was suffering once again from pain in the wisdom tooth area. As others have stated, nothing keeps the pain away forever and it seems that some things lose their effectiveness quite quickly. Here's a rundown of what I've been doing and how it's seemed to work.
I've been brushing my teeth with natural toothpaste for quite some time now and in comparing the ingredients I decided changing to 'Sensodyne' wasn't worth it. FWIW I use Nature's Gate Creme De Mint Natural Toothpaste.
In the past I was pretty sure I had infections, so I picked-up the Colgate Peroxyl. Normally, that pain went away in a couple days with using that and making sure I was brushing often. This time my pain seems to come in waves and I'm pretty sure it's from one of my impacted teeth finally growing in above another, so instead of dropping the money for a better-tasting peroxide solution I could essentially make at home, I bought some Jason's Healthy Mouth dental rinse. Again, a 'natural' product. In part I chose that one because it had not only tea tree oil which is antifungal in it's own right, but clove oil which was discussed here in depth. It is *strong* and can be diluted, but I chose to use it full-strength right now.
Tylenol is eh - I found like some others my PMS medication (Premsyn for me, no caffeine) worked better.
Since just about every 'extra strength' oral gel/liquid was essentially 20% benzocaine, I went with Kanka gel which you brush-on. It was by far the cheapest. It works for about 1/2 hour, just like everyone else said for other brands, so I tend to use it only if I'm getting a flare-up
Cold was working, and when it was working the soda trick did actually seem to help. I suck down soda anyway, so I wasn't changing anything. FWIW, I think it has to do with the carbonation acting somewhat like the fizz of the peroxide. Without the bonus of killing bacteria, of course.
Now it seems heat is working so I've been not putting ice in drinks, drinking tea/coffee, etc and using my heating pad.
I will have to get this one and probably at least the lower on the same side removed. My local county health department works with a Community Assistance Program and if I qualify, which I should, the extraction will be free. So if you have something like this in your state, check it out! It's worth it for no more pain.

I finally found my tube. It has always worked great. I think mine is old. Took 3 Tylenol extra strength, brushed my teeth with Colgate Toothpaste, used the Dr. Sheffield, put a warm towel on the infected side and I finally have some relief.

I've been up almost every night trying to find a way to make the pain go away in the left side of my mouth. Tooth aches are the devil. I grind and clench my teeth when I sleep, so I suspect that it could be the cause of it. At first I just started sucking the inside of my cheek between my teeth so I wouldn't clench them anymore, but that turned painful after a while. Next I bought a molded night guard from the store, but I felt like it might realign my teeth if I wore it too often.
Last night was one of the worst nights, so I was desperate for anything to help. I went down into the kitchen and took two Midol and started looking around in the cabinets and the fridge. I found a couple cloves of peeled garlic *I saw that some had mentioned it before* I figured I didn't have anything to loose so I munched it a couple times with my sore teeth and held it against the gum. I was pretty shocked when the pain went away in about 5 minutes and I was able to sleep through the rest of the night.

I am deathly terrified of the dentist. (I am a healthy 22 yr old female, but I cant help it) When I was a child I had to have a root canal long story short the wack job didnt numb my mouth all the way my mom said she has never heard anyone scream the way I did.So 2 or more years ago the tooth pain begain a dentist told my mom i can take 4 advil gel caps every 4 hours for as long needed. That worked for a yr or so. Now its back. I'm from the deep south so if this is an option try it! HURRICAN! Its like really strong orajel ask for it behind the counter at the drug store its $10 or so find some moon shine! Moon Shine cough syrup has been something I started taking as a little girl. Its as much moon shine as you want in a jar add 3-5 soft peppermint stick a splas of lemon juice and 2 table spoons of honey. Shake and let it sit!! I have had some 2 yrs were still taking for coughs. If you can handle it take 2 big shots and go to bed if not rup the mixture on your tooth it helps instantly. Keep taking the advil too. I hope this helps~

I use clove oil if I can find it , ground tylenol works well if the tooth is broken, rum or whisky rises help but only temporary, and when nessessary i compound my pain killers, in 2 hour intervals, 1000 mg of ex strength tylenol, and 1000 mg of ibuprofen, and for some reason , don't let it touch your teeth , but on occasion when nothing else works drinking coca cola works, not pepsi, not reg cola products, only coca cola, drink casual, cold, and if its gonna work it will in about 40 to 45 min, or about a litre to a litre and 1/2, ?? might not work for you but works for me, also , try pepermint extract if you cannot find clove oil, or grind down a whole clove with a nail file or something. when it hurts try em all ,, remember its not to fix the problem , only to deal with the pain. I found rubbing the area only works with phantom pains. and vodka does not work like dark alcohols for some reason..

I have a broken filling, not a big hole but big enough. I need to get a Root Canal done on this tooth. I went to Walgreens and purchased a temporary fill kit (same stuff the dentist uses) and packed it myself. This seems to help the pain immensly, especially with about 100MGs of Ibuprofen. I went to the dentist and he gave me Hydrocodone, this stuff was awesome the first time but has not effect anymore, now only putting warm water in my mouth and holding it for a while works. I feel all your pain!

This website is a God send. So, here it is...
First I tried the garlic but I think I may have done it wrong (I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed). Then, swished with as much hydrogen peroxide as I could. Then, spit. Then, I swished with salt water (a ton of salt, by the way). Then, spit. Then, I read another post about putting the fresh garlic RIGHT ON the tooth, so I did that. But I made sure that I got garlic all over and under (it burned my lip a little but it wasn't so bad). Then, took that out. Shot of Whiskey, swished that around. Spit. I think I'll go to bed now. THANK YOU EVERYONE!

I tried peanut butter, pure vanilla extract, vinegar with salt, mouthwash, oregano. Then I ask my brother if we have oragel (shot in the dark) he said YES!!! I put it on and instant relief!!! :):):). Oragel was the only thing that worked for me.
