Vineger- It is the real deal! Probably, anything that cools the skin and reduces/relieves the inflammation will help. The tea bag treatment works well also.
The worst burn I've had in my fifty-five year old life happened about thirty-five years ago. My step-brother and I spent several hours in a ski boat on a lake. Being young and dumb (as opposed to being older and dumb, at this point!) we didn't use 'sissy stuff' like sun block:). We drove home, around a four hour drive, in a convertible. I still had on my swim trunks and, when we got home, had lobster red thighs. I've not had a burn as bad as that since. After a sleepless night I spent the next day at work pouring vineger on my legs. By that night, though my legs were still as red, they did not hurt at all. Now, if I could just find a cure for my lousy memory!

This is incredible: brew enough tea bags to cover a considerable area of the sunburn and ice down to get the tea really cold. Place the cold, wet tea bags and/or a rag drenched in the tea over the affected area, keeping the bags and rags cold. If you can submurge the burned part of the body, do so into the tea. Do this for at least one hour as often as you can (3 or so times a day) until it fades. This works for second and third degree burns as well and will prohibit scarring! The tea works as an antioxidant and pulls the heat out of your body. It stops the pain temporarily also.

so a few years ago, i was sitting in the sun, wearing PLEANTY of sunblock...only problem i forgot to put it on my chest... later that day, my arms and face hurt and were red, however my chest did not hurt but was BRIGHT red, i did not do anything about it but put aloe on. a week went by and every day it got worse, i would get out of the shower and sheets of skin would peel off (i know gross) NOTHING helped the pain- i tried everything, and most things just made it feel worse, it got to the point where it started to scab over, and was excruciating to even touch, spray, or mist to put anything on it, so i went to the ER and they told me that it had to dry out so they could see if it was getting infected!!!! omg i was like no way your crazy it hurts so much as it is with the aloe/vinegar/mustard...ect on it i cant imagine how it would feel without it, so they gave me pain meds. THEY ALSO TOLD ME THAT NEXT TIME I GO OUT IN THE SUN THAT IMMEDATLEY FOLLOWING EXPOSURE- BEFORE THE PAIN OR BLISTERING- TO PUT NEOSPORIN ON THE SKIN AND THAT THIS SHOULD HELP TO STOP THE BURNING.
ITS WORKED SO FAR NO MORE BLISTERING, SKIN SHEETING, SCABING, EXCRUCATING BURNS FOR ME :)

Well I noticed there was a remedy with vineger in here, I just wanted to put my 2 cents in. May long weekend I got burned really bad, and i itched to the point i wanted to cry, cold showers worked until i got out (not recommended) then i tried vineger, I just sprayed it on my body where i was burned only (as it will sting if it touches unburned skin) dont wipe it of, just let it drip dry, and trust me, i slept like a baby. Reapply as often as you need, but remember, dont towel dry, DRIP DRY only, as towels will cause more irritation.

This will work for sunburns or any other kind of burn...apply regular yellow mustard to the burn. Once it dries, wash it off and this will prevent it from blistering. It really does work. I have trusted in this remedy since I was a teenager.

Vinager on the sunburn dose wonders...the reason people say mustard is it is a lil easyier to keep mustard from driping... if you soak a rag in vinager and aply it to the sum burn this will work.. never put anything with oils on the burn, this will only make it worse( look at that lotion b4 you put it on also... no coco buter or anything like that)

Shaving cream!!
The other day I got home from the beach and realized I was badly burned. Right away I got out the shaving cream and rubbed it into my back like I would do with lotion. I slept so well and the next morning the burn was gone. I even slept on my back! (The cool cream cools down the burn the whole night)

Vagisil - I know it sounds weird and gross but it worked for me!
I got a really bad sunburn on the back of my neck and all i had in the house that was for any kind of skin irritation but was not all greasy was vagisil... i read what the active ingredients were in it - a numbing agent and hydrocortisone which helps with inflamation, itching and burning, so i figured what the heck, it couldn't hurt any worse and it probably would help... and it worked wonders! I was pain free till noon the next day.

I recently received a nasty sunburn working outside at work. After a few suggestions i decided to opt with the most popular...VINEGAR. I bought a bottle at the grocery store stuck it in spray bottle and... the burning sensation was gone. You may need to spray a few times but it is an instant relief. Let it air dry on your skin and use Distilled Vinegar..no need to add water. Good Luck!!!

Several memebers of my family will burn in the winter through the windshield of the car they are so sensitive to the sun. One summer two of us had severe sun burn / sun poisoning.
This is what the Emergency room had me do.
Take soft terry towels, soak them in cold water, and put the in the freezer for a few minutes, have more towels ready, take the towels out of the freezer befor they get hard and so make it hard to wrap around affected areas.
I recommend that you put towels in the freezer to alternate with the ones against your skin.
This may hurt a bit when the towels start to get warmer but since the cold is drawing the heat out of your skin. Keep alternating the towels until there is no more burn, you will find that if you keep this up for either an hour or longer depending on the severity of the burn, that the sensitivity in your skin is gone so is the heat, and the moisture from the wet towels also helps keep the skin so it doesn't peel or itch as bad.
Once there is no more heat in your skin from this, then you can stop with the towels.

i itched so badly from my recent sunburn, that i was nearly in tears. i mixed cold water and vinegar (as much as possible as long as the smell doesn't bother you) and rubbed it all over with a wash cloth. about 10 mins. later the itch was gone and it stayed away permanently. from now on this is what i'll be doing if it happens again.

I am VERY fair skinned and fry like a pancake in the hot summer sun! My advice, firstly, follow all the rules! Big hats, sunscreen, reapply often, etc. BUT if you do get burned, the best way I have found to combat it is this. First, cool showers or baths, or alternately, ice packs wrapped in towels. For itching and pain, aloe is best. Especially from an aloe plant. (I grew up in the southwest!) If that doesn't do the trick, try this. Strip down to nothing but some comfy shorts or undies. Cook up some plain ol' oatmeal, like in the tall cylyndrical cans, and let it cool. Pop it in the fridge even! Spread it all over the burned skin. Cut holes in a garbage bag for your head and arms, put it on over the oatmeal. Sit and chill! it calms the skin like you wouldn't believe!!!

OK I AM A REDHEAD WITH THE FAIREST SKIN EVER - I BURN IN THE MIDDLE OF WINTER - IN THE MIDWEST!! SO FOR MY WORST SUNBURNS - THE BLISTERY PURPLE KIND I SWEAR BY THIS - TAKE ANY ALOE GEL AND PUT IT IN THE FRIDGE(I USALLY KEEP IT THERE) MAKE 3 CUPS OF UNFLAVORED QUICK OATS OATMEAL(KEEP IT ON THE WATERY SIDE) LET IT COOL IN THE FREEZER, MIX ALOE AND OATMEAL TOGETHER MAKING A PASTE AND SLATHER IT ON, LET IT SIT ON YOUR SKIN FOR 10 TO 15 MINUTES AND RINSE OFF IN COOL WATER.
THE COOLNESS HELPS NUMB THE PAIN INSTANTLY - THE OATMEAL TREATS THE ACTUAL BURN.

Something I found that works well, got rid of my sunburn nearly overnight, reducing it to a tan is this Vitamin E 'oil' you can get at most drug stores. It is over the counter and intended to reduce things like scars, and wrinkles. Works well on burns, just be sure to clean it off well or next you'll be looking up remedies for acne!

Try mixing quick oats with equal amounts of enough strong brewed tea and vinegar to make a paste. Smooth over burn and let sit a few minutes before rinsing in a cool shower. The relief is instant and the oatmeal really softens the skin. I also suggest using an aloe based lotion after your shower and taking ibuprofin before bed.

Sunburn remedy
I came across this site after I burn myself to a nice painful crisp after only an hour on the beach in Hyannis, Cape Cod.
I tried most of the remedies listed here; vinegar, Vitamin 'E' oil, aloe vera, tea bags, 'Preparation H'.
But, after trying that last one, I finally found THE BEST REMEDY for SUNBURN.
'CVS Hemmorrhoidal Cooling Gel with Vitamin E and Aloe Vera'.
Clear, non-greasy, non-staining formula takes away the pain immediately, reduces the swelling and redness, and guarantees a good night sleep after acquiring a sunburn.
Of course, any other brand will do just fine (Brooks, Walgreens, other), and, most importantly, what worked for me, may not work for you.
It all depends.
But, I finally have my end-all-be-all for sunburn!

I was on here trying to get a home remedy and I kept coming across vinager but I dont have any. I also seen a lot of people wrote about mustard and tea bags. I tried a few, I tried vagisil like someone said, didn't work, I tried shaving cream like 4 people said, didn't work. So I decided to try mustard and OMG right away it felt so good. It's cold and you cant feel any pain. So it says rub it in and let dry then whipe off. Well whiping it off kind of hurt, so I got in the shower and rised it off with using just my hands, got out and air dried. And wow I am pain free, I still have my tea bags in the freezer and I will post on how that works, because I couldn't put the mustard all over my body because I dont have anyone to help. But I suggest that using mustard, I was hurting so bad from burning at the tanning bed. I couldn't even wear a bra it hurt so much, and now I'm fine, I mean I'm still all red, but I'm not in any pain! I'll let you know how the tea bags works once I'm done!

my little guy, 5 years old, got a terrible sunburn earlier this year. i was so heartbroken at his crying and whimpering over the pain. first i gave him tylenol for some of the pain. i soothed him for a day by bathing him in milk and baking soda in lukewarm water. he loves bathtime so he really dug that. i added some oatmeal for good measure. after and between the baths i sprayed solarcaine on his sunburn and put him in soft cotton clothes. as a mom it made us both feel better to have some relief and some attention taken off his sunburn at 'bathtime'. i kept neosporin on the peeling parts when peeling started to make sure he didn't pull too much skin off and get infected. two weeks later no sign of any damage and we are sunburn free. from now on he doesn't get anywhere near the sun without spf 30 or above. lesson learned.

Easy and so soothing. Take regular black tea bags and soak them in a bowl of COOL, not cold, water to release the natural tannic acid. Stand nude in the shower and gently squeeze each bag (may be used several times before disposal) directly over the burned, stinging skin as many times as you like. DO NOT RINSE OFF THE TEA! You will immediately feel so much relief. After awhile, carefully smooth pure (not bottled) aloe gel over the burned skin and can take an OTC pain reliever containing Ibuprofen. I swear this works wonders.

Vinegar, vinegar, vinegar.
Nothing beats it. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT put any type milk product on a sunburn. I got burnied really bad in Florida on my class trip and the chaperone put Pet Milk on me and it literally cooked on my skin. When I got home the Dr. had to sedate me and peel it off. Hurt like the devil. Just a towel soaked in straight vinegar and laid on the burn. Works wonders.

I have my usual remedies for a sunburn, but this year I recieved one so severe that none of them worked including vinegar and aloe. I have used Emu oil for about everything from a moisturizer to easing sore muscles and remembered that it's great for sunburn. It has an anti-inflammatory property even though it's topical. After the first night, the itching and peeling stopped and over three days it totally settled down my burn and even tanned it.

first of all sun protection is the key, and if your looking for a great sunblock for kids and adults, use bullfrog, i have used every sunblock on the market and this works best. as far as the sunburn remedy i use nothing but vinager and neosporin on my kids when they get a sunburn. first you apply vinager to relieve itching and then neosporin for the actual burn. belive me this works! in just a few days you will see your burn fade away with no peeling or blisters, just be sure to keep applying the neosporin a couple of times a day.

I sometimes get the kind of burn that feels like bugs crawling all over me(on the sunburned areas. I was flipping out badly one night, the shower only worked while I was in there, any kind of clothing made it so much worse. I was running through the house yelling and crying. It really scared my husband so he called the emergency room. The nurse said take Benadryl Allergy. It made me fall asleep and I was fine. If I started to feel like this the next night, I took it again right away so I wouldn't have to go through that torture again. I was told that it was a form of sun poisoning. It is funny but it only happened to me after I had a baby, I guess the chemistry in my skin had changed. I still take Benadryl Allergy if I get a bad sunburn, I don't feel any pain when I am asleep and only minimal pain during the day.

I got my worst sunburn EVER and tried everything and nothing seemed to work. I tried vinegar, mustard, milk, cool showers. These would've worked if my sunburn had been less severe. The only thing I found that worked is solarcaine. It can be found at local drug stores. I would recomend getting the spray kind and not the gel kind because you can't put the gel kind on blisters but you can the spray kind, the spray kind is also a lot easier to use. You should also take ibprofin throughout the day (especiallyright before bed) for pain.

I cannot believe I have jjust read 4 pages of sunburn remedies and no one has posted the best non medical treatment...Which is Windex...Yes the common Windex window cleaner!! I and my family have used this for years and it works for everyone. Just adjust the bottle to give a nice misting effect and spray directly in burned areas. Of course use a soft cloth soaked in Windex for the face. This gives instant relief from even very bad burns. I only recomend Windex brand and not other similar glass cleaners as the chemical makeup may be different.

While on vacation one summer I got a REALLY bad sunburn, included were those awful blisters. Later I was swimming in the ocean and the blisters disappeared. Carefully wet the blisters with cool water and sprinkle an ample amount of regular table salt to it and let it dry. You may want to rub the salt on the blister a little if you can stand it. Let the dry salt stand on your skin for 30 min. to an hour depending on the size of the blister. This has worked well for me in the past.

I had watched a TV show about RAW HONEY and what it can be used for. Sunburn was one.. I had gotten a bad sunburn and remembered the raw hony show. I went to my health food store and bought some. The reason you should use raw honey is that the ones that you buy in your corner store has been heated to kill everything in the honey. Raw honey is pure. Apply it to the burn and place a wrap on it. Please it on but not tight. It works better then aloe... Hope this helps.

My friends and I went out on their boat on a really hot sunny Florida day. Needless to say we all got burn to a crisp and a considerable amount of my legs were in huge pain. I tried aloe, lotion and milk and nothing seemed to work! I read about the vinegar and decided to try it. My spray bottle broke so i just soaked a washcloth in the vinegar, wrung it out and let it sit on the burned parts until the cloth got hot, then just reapply. It doesn't make the pain go away but it TOTALLY takes the stinging and heat out! I am telling you it works!

I went to costa rica a couple months ago and i got sooo badly sunburned that i had blisters the size of nickles. our tour guide made me stay after dinner one night and cracked and egg and threw the yolk away and rubbed the egg white all over my sunburn and told me to sleep on it and wash it off in the morning and it worked WONDERS. my blisters went away in a couple days and the redness and pain went away over night. is a little uncomfortable and kinda gross to sleep on but it WORKS.
egg whites!

Whatever you do, do NOT put on Aloe Vera until you have released the heat from your skin. I worked at a tanning salon and had to take a bunch of test and get certification so I learned a bunch about it. First, get cold wet towels and press it to the sunburn. The cold feels so good on your skin and will take away the pain. If your entire body is burned, try a lukewarm bath, or smooth ice packs over your skin. Once you can touch the burn without feeling like it's on fire, THEN put on the Aloe Vera. A lot of people make the mistake of putting Aloe Vera on first. It will create a coat over your skin and actually hold the heat in, which in turn worsens the burn.
So, FIRST release the heat from your skin THEN use Aloe Vera. I has healing agents in it that will repair and moisturize your skin.

hey, fellow sufferers.
even though I am a brunette, I have paler-than-porcelain skin and my skin either goes SIZZLE in literally 15 minutes... Obviously suncream is great... but I was putting on the highest factor available six plus times a day...and i still got sizzled.
SO! a fool proof remedy with a bit of science too!
skin burns because the UV denatures vitamins and omegas and things in the outer layers of the skin, which then turns into a total barbeque. so after cooling the sunburn (cool compresses, cool shower...) you need to restore the vitamin and omega balance.
a great way to do this is to create a (rather ugly, admittedly) paste. Try oatmeal, aloe vera gel (preferabley your own), a DROP of tea tree oil (to protect against infection that can happen during peeling- it's anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungul)crushed vitamin E tablets (they're fab at cell renewal crucial to healing). I guess you can add other anti-inflammatory things too, but this works for me.
I recommend rubbing this into the skin (as much as you can bear) for as long as possible, and then following this with a super good moisturiser like cocoa butter, which is a total godsend for hydrating skin and reducing the risk of scaring.
Omega 3 is rich in a lot of things now, since the government are promoting it (in England at least)...and it's in a lot of things like butters and things. However, since the whole hoo-ha about saturated fat, we don't have a lot of omega 6- which skin uses to protect against sunburn. So try and get your fair share of these omegas to protect your skin in future.
I don't really understand the salt water theory, as this will dry the skin out- which is the total opposite to healing it. But hey- if it works for you, go for it!
best of luck.

Recently I had gotten a terrible sunburn for the first time in about 10 years. Desperate for some kind of relief I put Colgate mint toothpaste one it . . . It felt better, but only temporarily. I then tried a mixture of aloe vera gel, aloe vera cream, and pure mint extract. It felt much better afterwards and lasted much longer.
It's a soothing way to get rid of the burning. :-D

Yesterday, I was working on my boat and I got burned again. I went for the hydrocortisone cream(1%) but it did nothing. Then I thought about shaving cream. Justlather it on pretty thick and it is instanly cooled. Also you can try Corn starct and water to make a paste. Its a bit messy at first but works very well.

For my sunburns vinager seems to work the best! I also use cocoa butter, even though the sa not to. It really does work! Your skin gets so dry when it is burned and needs moisture!

When I get a sunburn I eat a yellow peach halfway to the pit and rub it all over. Bonus if you've had it in the cooler all day and its cold. Let the peach juice dry on and shower when you get home and you won't be burnt anymore.
