My dentist told me my mouth ulcers were called 'aphthous ulcers' and that there is no known cause or cure. They are not Herpes. They are aggravated by stress and usually occur when there is some injury (like biting your tongue or cheek while eating).

I've tried topical steroid treatments prescribed by my dentist and they sometimes help a little. I've also tried a lot of the other things suggested here.

But the thing that helps the very most for me is SLEEP. If they are just starting, one really good night's sleep where I totally relax will make them go away. If they are in full force, then the same thing will make them start the healing process (where they don't hurt any more), but full healing takes 2-3 days. A real good night's sleep reduces stress and adrenaline production and I think just helps the body fight off whatever it is and heal up. The side affects are very pleasant as well. :-)

Spray with chloraseptic, found in all drug stores like rite aid walgreens. this numbs them immediately... it tastes bad the first few times, but after that, i spray it like candy. It says on the back 'canker sore relief' it also recommends to use it every two hours, but right now im using it every hour.

another really good ulcer fix came from my doc, she said make magic mouthwash.. 30z of each mylanta, liquid benadryl, and viscous xylocaine mix together and shake very well and you can brush it on or rinse mouth i apply it with a q tip and i put quite a bit on it :) that way my whole mouth and numb :)and dont swallow it :p annnnnd wala no pain or irritation! you can use it every 3 hours as needed (dont more often then that because viscous xylocaine speeds up your heart a lil) and it holds up 4-5 hrs (depending on your pain) i was shocked. i had some filling done on my top teeth and ended up with one big one on my left side and a small on my right where the cotton had been and this worked amazing!

Suffered for years and I tried lysine, and silver nitrate, salt, and a host of other remedies, but I would still get ulcers...several at a time that would last for weeks and this remedy reduces them dramatically if not eliminates them.

I have used an SLS-free toothpaste for years and have only had 2 mouth ulcers in 8 years. And those 2 came after brushing with a regular toothpaste.

The solution is: Get a toothpaste that is SLS-free (sodium lauryl sulfate) and free of abrasive ingredients like silica and baking soda. The SLS is the foaming ingredient that makes you feel like you are getting a great clean with all the bubbles, but actually it depletes the natural protective mucosal lining of the mouth...Making the lining more likely to succumb to mouth-acids, wear and tear from chewing and the other abrasive items in standard toothpastes. Order the special toothpastes online or just read the ingredients at your local health food store or just brush without. It is actually the flossing and brushing that do the cleaning, not the toothpaste. Some people are sensitive to the flouride as well.

Just put some salt directly on the ulcer and it might sting a little but it does not last to long. And make sure you keep your mouth part way open for about a minute, and do not lick the salt off.If you do this a few times a day it will be sure to heal the ulcer in about 3 days.

I am a male 65 years of age. Ever since I was 16 I have experienced mouth ulcers that would occur on my lips, tongue, throat, and on the sides of my mouth. Maybe as frequent as 7 times a year and lasting typically 2-3 weeks. Although, I had one bout that lasted six months! It seems that the condition worsened the older I got. Over decades of time I had tried everything under the sun including: vitamins supplements, herbs, not taking analgesics, avoiding certain foods (citric acid, e.g.), etc. in order to alleviate their severity. Some were deep and extremely painful. I noticed that many times they would occur at the same spots in my mouth. When I would have them I would feel sickly and as though my immunity would be very low. I usually would get sores after having the flu or a bad cold. A dermatologist once told me that they really didn't know what caused them but that somehow they were linked to the bodies immune system attacking it own tissue. Okay now the good news.
Several years ago I starting taking 160 mg. resveratrol extract tablets once a day. From that day forward I have been ulcer free! On several occasions I had stopped taking the tablets and the ulcers would once again start to form. But, by doubling up on the dosage to 2 tablets, symptoms would disappear in a day or two. I am still trying to adjust the dosage trying to get it down to 160 mg. once every two days. It was that simple - 'knock on wood.' I have to say that the frequencies of colds are very few and much less severe as compared previously. I think somehow it has greatly improved my immunity toward viruses. Resveratrol has been a blessing to me. I hope others with similar symptoms can experience the same success!

Use fresh aloe vera (if possible) 'fillet' the gel from the skin, put the gel in a blender add distilled water. Keep in a small bottle and take a mouthful regularly, swish it round your mouth, holding and swishing for a few minutes then just swallow it, if you also have a sore throat gargle before swallowing. Aloe can also be used on other ulcers.

I had or have a mouth ulser, (the little white spots inside the lip)for several months. I went to the local heath food store a counselor there suggested using liquid myrrh extract. She said to put about 15 drops in a 1/4 cup of water and garggle or swish it around and the sore will be gone in 24 hrs. I tried it and it was not strong enough. I started getting results when I put a couple drops of it full strength on my affected lip. I slept with it like that and noticed it considerably better the day or two. Sleep helps a lot also.

There are several things that when used together work pretty well.
Liquid benadryl swish and spit
Salt water rinse(Heavy on the salt)
PLAIN yogurt
and a topical oral numbing solution so you can eat if the ulcer is on your tounge
and hydroproxcide.
Its not a cure but it will shorten the duration and ease up the pain a little.

Avoid toothpaste with sodium lauryl sulfates (SLS)
Also keeping a healthy balanced diet
controling your stress
AND
taking a daily allergy medicine since these are all suspected causes of weakened protection in your mouth.

I take 1 l-lysine tablet (it aids in the repair and maintenance of skin cells and mucus membranes) every day, that helps to keep them away- I up that to 3-5 everyday during an outbreak, especially after meals. Also, 1 tbs of baking soda dissolved in 8 oz. of water makes a great mouthwash- it takes the acidity away and balances out the PH in your mouth to help promote healing.

Another treatment is to pour 300ml of steaming water over one and half teaspoon of dried sage. Then cover it and put it on simmer for 20 minutes. Add half a tea spoon of sea salt and mix it well. After brushing your teeth, use 50ml of this blend to clean your mouth. This may lend you a hand in getting rid of the bacteria that nourishes on plaque from mouth-ulcers.org

DENTAL WAX, DENTAL WAX, DENTAL WAX!!!

NO... dental wax is not going to heal your mouth ulcer, but it will give you substantial relief while your ulcer heals!

I have cancer and my first course of chemotherapy caused severe oral mucusitis - meaning my entire entire mucus membrane was destroyed causing severe inflamation and ulceration. I was unable to eat, drink or speak for days. It eventually cleared and my mouth returned to normal. Well, nearly normal. I had one small ulcer on the side of my tongue that hadn't fully healed before the second course of chemo began. I have been out of the hospital for a week now and it just wasn't healing. I've tried nearly every remedy I could and know some of them are working. The problem is what do you do while you wait for the ulcer to heal? The remedies work but your ulcer is constantly being irritated by your teeth! And that is where the dental wax comes into play - cover your teeth with dental wax so your ulcer isn't constantly being irritated. I was in such severe pain that I was barely eating and not speaking. My mother suggested the dental wax and it has made all the difference in the world.

I also applied Kanka Professional Strength Mouth Pain Liquid to my ulcer, which does two things - numbs the pain AND creates a protective coating over the ulcer. Just make sure your ulcer is as dry as possible when you apply the Kanka, this helps it adhere much better.

Use these two products (dental wax and Kanka) to give your ulcer relief from irritation between remedy treatments.

OK, one more thing: The best remedy I have found is actually a 5-step program involving garlic, peroxide, turmeric paste, salt water and peppermint oil. I found it on the Livestrong website (the Lance Armstrong Foundation). If you google 'livestrong how to get rid of mouth ulcers' you should easily be able to find this regimen. I am currently using it to treat my ulcer and it is working! just don't forget to use the dental wax and Kanka liquid to shield you ulcer from constant irritation while you allow the remedies to work!

I hope this helps everyone who is suffering as much as I was. I'm nearly pain free now!

just buy for like $5 at cvs , Walgreens or any store like that and. buy sore throat spray , mine is cheery but any flavor will do, mines legit called sore throat spray phenol/ oral anesthetic cherry flavor , and spray it right on the sore , like 3 sprays or so swish around and spit out ,

it's cheap easy and although I have no clue if it heals them but it nums them completely it's like there not there , plus it nums sore throats

The magic mouthwash that your doc can write a script for is great for the pain. I try to get a new script for it every time I get more then a few ulcers. If you don't have insurance try a mix of maylox and liquid allergy medication. This doesn't seem to make them go away. The only thing that really seems to cure them is rest and getting rid of the stress that is causing them. STRESS is the main cause of these painful sores.

I had horrible mouth ulcers and I finally went to the doctor about them. They would just grow and get ugly and hurt like crazy. The doctor immediately told me to stick to anything like Tums or something with calcium because a mouth ulcer is caused by the acidic levels in your body that are extremely high. To balance that acidic level--try Tums, Rolaides, or anything with calcium and/or magnesium and it should go away slowly but effectively. The other note on this is that I take the Tums or Rolaides and move it to the ulcer in my mouth and let it disolve slowly and that helps.

For the best instant relief of the most painful ulcer under my tongue i have ever had i dipped a water soluble aspirin in a cup filled with only a mouthful of water and pressed the dissolving tablet onto the affected area until about half a tablet is left. Put that half in your cup of water and wait for it to dissolve. It stings a fair bit as the bubbles work their magic so i then gently swish the liquid mix around and hold for a minute or so. The pain is gone so quickly and no more irritation when my teeth brush up against the ulcer.
I use aspro clear and since discovering it i havent bought nurofen or panadol since.
Gargling it works for sore or infected throats.
It will quickly relieve even the worst period pains.
I turn to it when i crack my neck too much through the day and end up with a tension headache.

hi,

My husband suffered from repeated mouth ulcers (not cancer patient)for many years(20 yrs). He would have many ulcers and then they would heal.He also has constipation problem on and off. we didnt link it together until i read a article about lip beauty.can you believe it? no doctor was able to find out but if he tries and combats constipation, he wont have. And wen he suffers from constipation he will have it again. Also, i have seen my grand parents and people their age wash their mouth (gargle and spit water) after using restroom. They say it removes some bad stuff (I am from India) . Guess what, if he tries doing it the ulcers heal fast. I think, there could be many factors for mouth ulcers. But hope this helps someone.

For mouth blisters scratch the blister with a toothbrush to remove 'scab' (which is where the bacteria is) or until bleeding. Then put a clump of baking soda on it and immediately pour vinegar on top. Spit out the mixture and let it set for minute, then gently rinse. You should notice that there is a new scab over the blister. This will sting very badly, but will heal up blister by the next day. No pain no gain, right? I call it, cauterizing.

Another remedy which i found very useful is to do the same thing at first, scratch off the scab. Then chew up a raw clove of garlic and push it onto the blister. This one burns as well. But it is better to burn for a few minutes then to suffer with a blister for weeks.

Mouth ulcers are caused by motility disorders or an alteration of the intestinal flora. Mouth ulcers can be very painful and one may not be able to have a proper diet. There are many home remedies which are simple, effective and also easily available. For example Baking soda and lemon juice is very effective in ulcers of the oral cavity relieving pain as well as the severity of the sores.Gargle also a solution of 1 teaspoon of apple vinegar with half a cup of water three times a day.
