Migraine:
At 16 I had classic migraines including a white spot in the center of my visual field, or the aura, a wavy line thru my visual field for about 20 min. After that came incapacitating headache with slight loss of control of the left side of my body. Very upset stomach and aversion to light. Lasted as long as three days. I had these several times per year particularly after finals or stress. Went to the head doctor at UCLA Neuropsychiatric Clinic. He said, forget the drugs. At the first sign of migraine rebalance the parasympathic nervous system by taking a hot and cold shower. 5 min of each as hot and cold as you can manage. Stop brow beating yourself and stop worrying about stuff especially in the past.
So I tried it. I'd get in the shower and remind myself that everying was really OK, and I was OK too. After 20 min no more symptoms! Learned to stop pushing myself so hard, and to meditate. Now years go by without even the start of a migraine.
Worked for me. (Once I even applied hot and cold paper towels in an airport bathroom and that worked too!)

Hi, Two people I know have rapidly eliminated both migraine headaches, and I have used this to improve or cure a number of ailments that couldnt be cured ot improved by other methods, by staring at the so called random white 'noise' created by the television static or snow that analogue, non digital tv sets create on the screen , when the cable is taken off or the set is tuned into a non broadcast channel. Newer sets have a blue screen that blocks that random static black dots jumping around on a white screen which is random 'white noise', partly from picking up the leftover background radiation from te big bang, so Ive read.

One woman I met who tried it had had a literally continuous, so she said, migraine for 30 years, due to some kind of structural problem in the back of her brain, and she said that in between 15 and 30 minutes she estimated, for the first time in 30 years her migraine was eliminated. A similar experience was related to me a neighbor who tried it who has intermittent migraines, and also for an ordinary headache in less time.

This works by within ten seconds putting me in a dead ringer for the theta brainwave state, one of the four brainwaves that is created during REM sleep (where dreaming occurs)l, and articles on the internet back that up in regards to audio white noise. However I find that staring at white noise with the sound off creates twice as strong an effect in me, and I have read a number of articles on the internet that the theta brainwave state is a super healing state, and that the theta and alpha brainwave state are the two brainwaves found in the womb , and this theta state is very healing according to my experimentation with it Ie inten have also read on various articles on the internet that listening to the sound of dolphins creates theta brainwaves in humans, and swimming wit dolphins is alleged to be healing to humans. It is also reported in articles on the internet to be the brainwave state created by hypnosis.

There is a mildly pleasurable feeling felt while doing this, and that would weem to be due to the theta brainwave state, according to articles on the internet, causing the release of pain reducing endorphins which do cause a mild pleasure when one is releasing them. Another woman I know who had a chronic, unremitting pain syndrome, which pain was cut in half throughout a two day test of having te tv tuned continuously in her peripheral vision while she lay in bed with her disease.

I've had migraines since I was in Jr. High. Over the years I've tried various remedies. And although I think migraines come about differently for different people; I believe stress, odd sleeping patterns, and lack of vitamin B12 are major factors. I'm 21 now and have my migraines under control. I exercise regularly, take a vitamin B12 pill every day, and (this is going to sound odd, but it has REALLY helped) smoked cannabis every once in a while. I only get serious attacks around my period now, and during these times I take a cold pack and place it on my forehead and the back of my neck. And then I chill out in bed, in silence. Don't drink soda, you'll get hooked on the caffeine which isn't helpful; drink tea instead, and at least one glass of water before dinner. Over the years the subject of migraines has been a sensitive one for me, and I hope I can help out a fellow victim. I know it’s difficult, but we all need to chill out, try not to stress so much and get adequate, regular sleep. Also! Give your eyes a break from the computer/cell phone screen.

I had regular severe migraines from age 23 to age 43 and they got much worse as I got older. The answer lay in fixing my TMJ problem. You can read all about TemperoMandibular Jaw dysfunction on the internet. There's heaps around about it. An oral surgeon arranged a dentist to create a mouth plate to correct the jaw alignment and it was an instant cure. Only wore the plate for about 6 months and never needed it again. It truly worked for me and it may work for you too. A

I AM 21 YEARS OLD AND I HAD MY FIRST MIGRAINE WHEN I WAS ABOUT 13. I HAVE NOTICE THAT MY MIGRAINES USUALLY OCCURS THE DAY MY PERIOD COMES ON AND THE DAY IT GOES OFF (ALTHOUGH THERE ARE OTHER THINGS THAT TRIGGER MY MIGRAINES THAT ARE UNRELATED TO MY CYCLE, SUCH AS HEAT, STRESS, HUNGER, AND MOST OF ALL STRONG SMELLS LIKE BBQ, OR STRONG PERFUME ETC.) ME, IM MORE OF A NATURAL HEALER AND I HATE TAKING MEDICINE BUT AS WE ALL KNOW MIGRAINES ARE UNBEARABLE AND DEMANDS MEDICATION BUT THESE ARE A COUPLE OF THINGS THAT USUALLY WORK FOR ME
FOR NATURAL HEALER (WITH NO MEDICINE)- I USUALLY TAKE TWO COLD WASH CLOTHS AND LAY ONE ON MY FOREHEAD AND ONE ON MY NECK. I LAY ON MY BACK IN A DARK SOUND/STRESS FREE ROOM WITH MY EYES CLOSE TAKE ME A NAP AND BY THE TIME I WAKE UP ITS USUALLY GONE. IT ALSO HELPS IF YOU HAVE SOMEONE TO MASSAGE YOU OR BRUSH YOUR HAIR AS WELL.
AS FAR AS MEDICINE GOES- I USUALLY POP 2 EXCERDINE AND LAY DOWN FOR ABOUT 30MIN OR SO UNTIL IT GOES AWAY.

In a dark room, I put in earplugs, lie on my back with ice in a rolled towel under my neck. I put a drop or two of rosemary oil on a washcloth and put in on my chest (so that it's not overwhelming)and hold a pillow or a rolled towel over JUST my eyes/forehead (for slight pressure). A pillow under the knees helps too.

I have noticed that SUCRALOSE (aka Splenda), triggers my migraines. This stuff is found in a lot of foods now.
Before, caffeine/Excedrin helped my migraines.
However, since I've had my tubes tied and my cycle started, my migraines have gotten quite worse and nothing seems to get rid of them anymore. They last 3 days and I have classic symptoms (didn't before). Not saying I wish I didn't get my tubes tied, but take this into consideration before you make that decision.
Meanwhile, the hot/cold treatment and the massaging seem to help me get through the day. And Cokes (carbonation, sugar, and caffeine) help me with the nausea. And if you want the real sugar Cokes (not corn syrup) get the Mexican Cokes.
I'm gonna keep trying all these remedies here...maybe something will work!

I've been lucky as many to get migraines since I was 14. I have tried everything from migraine pills from the doc to cold clothes. I honestly think that the only thing that works for me is calming the body. Stress does a lot of damage and you can tell just by the pain that a simple stress headache will cause. Cannabis works the best. Although people are against it I do think this will be the up and coming new miracle drug.

Soak a cloth in vinegar and place on your face while lying down. Make sure to put it on the side you feel the pain. I am pregnant and cannot take my Axert and this works for me.

The day after my 17th birhtday, I had my first migraine. Everyday for about 2 months straight I would have one that would start around noon and last for over 5 to 6 hours. I tried so many pain medications but nothing would stop it. I decided to try a more natural remedy then pills called chiropractics. I learned that migraines can be caused by having pinched nerves in your neck. Now, at the age of 20, I rarely have a migraine since I've been going and they dont last very long at all. I recommend chiropractics to anyone that has excessive migraines.

This site has been a godsend. My mother is suffering from severe migraines after a fall...apparently it's called post traumatic migraines. I combined some of the remedies and though not completely removing the pain, the result means she doesn't have to take the pain medication. We're using menthol on the temples, upper lip and between the eyes (that is where it was centered today). I then take an ice pack wrap it in a towel and place it at the base of her neck. Then I take a cold washcloth put that over her eyes and forehead plus put a cold pack on top of that. It's the type of cold press that can be stretched tightly wound around her head.

Relief comes! Thank you!

I have a migraine in my head, temples, and the back of my neck right now. I've tried a few different remedies and I'm going to post them here. My pain started out at a 10 on a scale of 1-10. It is now about a or 4, which feels MUCH better.

Drank a mug of peppermint tea - calmed me down, but did not really help my headache.
Ice pack on neck - helps the neck pain a bit, but barely.
Took three ibuprofen - did absolutely nothing.
Smoked cannabis - I'm not condoning drug use, nor do I smoke often, but this truly took the sharp edge off of my pain. This is where I finally began to see relief.
Hot bath - DEFINITELY took the edge off even more. I played soft music and kept ice on my neck.

Like I said earlier, my pain is still there but greatly decreased now. Time to lay down in a dark room. Good luck folks.

I'm 29 and have had migraines since I was 12. I was officially diagnosed at 15. At age 22, I had my first child and didn't have any migraines until around 3 years ago. They get bad enough to where excedrin migraine does not work anymore. I usually get them right before my period. I have pain, nausea, sensitivity to light & sound, and basically cannot get out of bed. I go to the emergency room for toradol/benadryl cocktail. My doctor prescribed Imitrex which made it excrutiatingly worse. So, I've been staying away from MSG (monosodium glutamate), which I didn't realize is in so many foods. I haven't had as many migraines since avoiding msg. If I do get one, from eating fast food usually which can contain msg without me knowing, I smoke marijuana. Marijuana also cured me from a 3-week sinus infection. Literally, the next day it was gone. For migraines, it gets rid of the pain & causes me to sleep it off. The only thing is that I can't go into work while I'm on it, I also cannot work with a migraine so there's a catch 22...

I have suffered from migraines for close to my entire life. They started around 5 years old and I'm now 29. Over the years, they have changed drastically. I now find that 90% of the time, I wake up with it. Zomig is the only thing I've found that reliably works most of the time. It's a nasal spray, so it doesn't matter if I get sick, the medicine is still in my system. I've never had to wait more than 45mins for enough relief that I can actually get out of bed and carry on a conversation.
(my migraines affect my speech and thought process to the point it sometimes seems like I've had a stroke). I swear by it.
Other than prescriptions, I avoid artificial sugars like the plague. They are my #1 trigger. I also MUST sleep with a fan on and in a cold room or I wake up in migraine city. Heat is the enemy. I usually can't drink water during it, even though I know it helps. I will vomit almost instantly every time. Coffee I actually can get down, and that helps too. Elevating my pillow so I'm not flat, and putting pressure directly on the worst spot of pain on my head is a temporary fix to calm it when it's that bad.
Morally questionable as it may be, smoking marijuana is one of the most amazing reliefs I have found. At very least it quells my nausea and helps me relax and maybe fall asleep. A cold compress on my forehead and back of the neck can help too.

A migraine is something I would wish on nobody. They are horrible, and incredibly misunderstood (it is NOT 'just a headache'). There is nothing better than that giddy feeling you get when it's finally over and you feel like yourself again. This forum is great. So many people suffer from this, and it's great to get other ideas from people who understand, and to know we're not alone.

Ive had migraines after i had my daughter. A friend of mine told me a very good remedy
'Abuelita chocolate' its a hot chocolate mix, you can find it in pretty much any store.
This other one is a little more complicated its called 'RUDA PLANT' i think its 'reu' plant in english. Its a european plant, very strong.
Ok well in a small saucepan add about 1 cup of whole milk, add in a good amount of the'ruda' plant. once the milk is consumed with the smell (trust me you'll notice the smell in your whole house) add a whole bar of the chocolate bring to a boil until the chocolate is dissolved.
Drink hot
CAUTION!! DO NOT DRINK IF PREGNANT, it is said that this plant is also used as a purposal miscarriage plant

This is slightly embarrassing, but I have a way to stop my migraines instantly. I am pretty sure that I suffer from the common migraine, with the pain being only on the right side of my head and behind my right eye. I seem to get them seasonally, meaning I'll have migraines once or twice a day or one every other day for a few months and then not get them for a year or more. However, the last two times I started to get them I had read some things about the cause of migraines being from chemical imbalance in the brain or something like that so I thought about how one might reset that balance and I wondered if when I started to feel a migraine come on or if I was woken up with it already pretty sever then I would masturbate. Please forgive me if this sounds perverted it is just when you are in such pain, you will try anything. Sure enough, if you try to hold out your climax as long as you can, whatever happens in the brain at that time, it seems to reset the chemical imbalance immediately after climax. I'm only writing this because it worked for me and if it can help somebody else with the pain then it is worth the embarrassment.

I've had migraines with varying frequency since high school (I'm 25) and I've recently found a really great new thing to add to my arsenal or 'ahh-i-want-to-slam-my-head-into-a-wall-so-i-can-pass-out-it-hurts-so-much' lil ole' bag of tricks. Salonpas brand hot/cold medicated patches. I get the small ones for the neck and put one on each side of my neck at the back. I find these particularly helpful when I'm out somewhere and I truly can't leave to go hide in a dark place. They tingle at first and then have a great spreading warmth hot cold thing going on. They really help me relax and they smell kind of like menthol which helps too. I find them much better and more powerful than IcyHot brand patches. I keep them in my purse and when combined with a cup of coffee and a couple of Excedrin i can usually carry on with my day.

I also want to put in a quick nod to masturbation! I know it sounds weird and may make some people uncomfortable but if you're at home in bed under the covers anyway... I've found it always helps calm me or at the very least helps me fall asleep. It's the endorphins and I've also heard it helps because the blood rushes away from your head which relieves some pressure.

This isn't so much a remedy as information concerning what brings migraines on. A lot of people don't realise what foods, and fruits, contain vaso dilating amines which basically cause the arteries and veins to swell causing the migraine. Most people know that cheese and chocolate are the main culprits and that cheese contains tyramine and chocolate contains phenylethylamine (not sure of the spelling) and that both contain vaso dilating amines. But not many people know that raspberries, avocados, bananas and oranges are high in tyramine and especially so if they are very ripe. And especially orange juice as it's more concentrated. Another culprit is Aspartame which is found in diet cokes. People choose diet over ordinary sugar not realising that Aspartame is a dangerous chemical and that it turns into formaldehyde at room temperature and has been known to cause strokes in monkeys. (So why is it in practically every child's soft drink on the market??) And it also causes crippling migraines in susceptible people. Vegemite is also high in Tyramine, as are all products containing Yeast Extract, such as Marmite. Yeast Extract is present in flavour enhancers, such as Bisto and Gravy Granules, packet soups and tinned mince, that kind of stuff. Some people are also sensitive to onions. A very good book on vaso dilating amines in foods is one called: The Migraine Guide and Cookbook by Josie Wentworth (No, I'm not the writer :)Another trigger to watch out for is hormone replacement patches. Also if you delay changing your patch and then put a new one on, the sudden increase will trigger a migraine, so you need to monitor them to see what does trigger a migraine and what doesn't. You could try cutting bits of the patch to see what works best for you. Or cutting them in half when you've forgotten to change one and then adding the other half later. Finally, the only drug that's ever worked for me is Imigran, also known as Sumatriptin. I will not go anywhere without them. They can knock a migraine on the head in half an hour. So if you're suffering I suggest you beg for this because it works like magic. Hope all this helps some poor migraine sufferer somewhere as I know what you're doing through :)

For my migraines I use the usual menthol on my temples, but I also lay on my back with my feet in ice cold wet socks and I cover the rest of me, head included, with a warm blanket. A friend told me about it and it doesn't make it totally go away, but the cold pulls the pain away.

I am 27 years old, and have been suffering from migraines since I was 12. As migraine sufferers, we all know to stay away from triggers such as hotdogs (because of the sodium), red wine, ect. and to stay hydrated and stress free, but we also all know that some of these things are not completely avoidable (like stress! lol), but Id like to share a few things that work for me. One thing in particular is Xanax (or any kind of acute anxiety medication). Im not implying that you go to your MD and ask him/her to write you a script, but if you are a migraine sufferer and also suffer from anxiety, try to take one of your anxiety pills for your migraine. I dont know why, but it works, and if nothing else, it will at the very least help you fall asleep. Also, some people use heat, and others use cold. I prefer MOIST heat. I tried a few things; hot washcloth, putting a wet washcloth in the microwave, ect., but it never seemed to stay hot enough long enough. So what I do is wet a washcloth and put it on my forehead and over my eyes, then I use a heating pad or a hot water bottle (if anyone even OWNS one of those anymore lol) and put that over it. You still get the moisture from the damp washcloth, and the heating pad or hot water bottle stays hot and gives you the heat. We also all know that sleep and hydration always help, but a few other things Id like to share is when you feel a headache turning into a migraine (we all know the difference and can tell that turning point) try a cold glass of something caffeinated (like a regular soda- not diet) and something else sweet (like a candy bar). Again, I dont know why, but it works! Lastly, sometimes when the weather is changing (like a cold front moving through or allergy season) I take a sinus or allergy medicine with my migraine medicine (something like sudafed or benadryl or dayquil-something along those lines). This seems to help because sometimes its congestion that you cant even feel that is giving you the pressure and thus causing the migraine. I know this was a whole lot of info, but I hope it helps someone out there. To all- be well. :)

Simple relief for migraines that you wake up with.
*If you WAKE UP with migraines and sleep on your stomach with your head turned, it may strain the nerves and muscles enough to trigger a migraine.
You may also suffer from neck pain and stiffness.

Remedy
Sleep on your back only, do not sleep on your side, it is too easy to turn over on your stomach and wake up again with a migraine. It may be difficult to break this habit, but if this is the trigger you will be overjoyed to not wake with a migraine.

This actually helped me, no medication could touch it, but something so simple as sleeping on my back did the trick. I used to wake up with migraines and vomit, my eyes would not focus, bright lights and noises irritated me, a full blown migraine. I was able to stop them and also have helped others just by passing on this simple information. So I'm hoping it will help others. Chiropractic care is also quite helpful to remove nerve irritation, resolve muscle tension. But if you go home and sleep on your stomach again, you'll possibly undo the adjustment and may wake up with another migraine. It's a hard habit to break but so worth it!

Other causes of migraines are not so easy to address, sometimes it can be caused by allergies to foods or food additives, diet drinks, or other environmental toxins.

Ok so here's what has helped my migraines...things I've tried in desperation when I have a three day long migraine when I've already taken excedrine or relpax and they decide to no longer work. Watch what you eat-avoid trigger foods at all cost! Take a shower and alternate hot and cold-as hot as you can stand and as cold as you can stand, which heck when you have a migraine you'll do anything right! The hot to cold change opens and closes and flushes your blood vessels or something. Also just trying to fall asleep with ice on the most painful area-wake up with no migraine! Apple cider vinegar 2tbsp in water with some honey-seems to work sometimes, basically if caught right at the beginning. Taking 400mg B2 and magnesium daily, when I was doing this I had much fewer migraines-have to start again. Breathing exercises-no kidding if you search it there are a bunch to try out and see which works best for you. It is very beneficial to breathe correctly, something we don't realize we are doing or not. Also just having someone, or yourself, press hard on the back of your head/neck which I think has to do with nerves and blood vessels going through your head. All of these have worked for me at one time or another, just depends on how fast I catch the headache or which is most available. Im ready to try acupuncture because there is a clinic that goes on a sliding scale near me and it's sposed to help according to a guy I know who gets migraines. I'm also looking into other supplements or herbs that can help, feverfew doesn't work for me because it effects my hormones and I end up with a period every two weeks which means a migraine every other week that lasts the whole week. Do the math. :(

I can't believe I forgot about this. I have had this migraine for 2 weeks now and I have been sitting here crying. I am desperate and would try anything at this point. I will try some of the suggestions I have seen here.
But, I just remembered something that worked for me the two times I tried it.
You will need help with this one if you can get it (you can try it yourself but not sure if it works that way).

Ok get a towel or pillow case, wrap it around your head I (the edges of the towel or inside edges of the pillow case). Then, have someone twist it very tight, as tight as you can possibly stand it, and hold it there for about 5 to 10 minutes. Be sure to relax and breath. Then remove the towel, or pillow case, and boom the headache is gone. If it a really bad one it will at least be diminished to the point of manageability.

An old woman friend of mine showed me this one day when I was staying with her. She sat me down and did this to me. I was amazed that it worked. She is a very wise woman. She did this for me twice a few years ago. I can't believe I forgot about it. I hope it works for you too.

This is more of a 'what is causing the migraine' prevention advice... when I get a migraine I usually take Feurinol (prescription medication) and that helps. But I found that by watching what I eat I realized that almost anytime I get a migraine and I go check the ingredients of what I've eaten or had to drink I almost have always eaten carmel coloring without realizing it. The last two weeks I've had a migraine almost every day.. finally it occurred to me that the only change I had made recently was in the brand of coffee creamer I use in the morning. Lo and behold the new creamer had carmel coloring in it. I realized I had this allergy a few years ago when I stopped drinking pepsi and my headaches all but stopped. It's amazing how many things have carmel coloring in them... even the soups I love... alas I have given up the things I enjoy to not have the slamming headaches. So, check the ingredients in what you eat and see if they ever match up to carmel coloring. This is more common than you think! Good luck!

I've been getting migraines for 8 years. I had a CT Scan, numerous MD consults which did not result in anything except prescriptions. I started keeping a migraine journal noting everything that happened dieting each episode: date, aura, symptoms, pain level, what foods I had consumed within the 24 hour period leading up, etc. Eventually, I discovered (on my own), that I am allergic to artificial sweeteners (aspartame, sucralose, etc.). They are in anything diet or sugar free. I had not had a migraine for a year until today. I realized, I took a mint from someone without inspecting the ingredients. Sure enough, it contained sucralose. Now I'm suffering the consequences. Just a thought...good luck everyone!

I read this in an article and it has worked ever since I take B12 sublingual 1000 mgs every morning and I have not had a migraine in the last year and it's only about $6 dollars for a bottle of 100. Also if I feel like headache is coming on ...its very important to nip in the bud early. I used to wait and say I let the pain pass and then I find Im at the the dr three day later getting a shot in my but because nothing will help(even prescribed meds) So as soon as feel a pain I immediately take over the counter tylenol(anything handy) and a caffinated soda . Some people say don't drink soda but the caffine make the pill work faster. I just recommend do not drink diet soda's. Aspartme can make your headache worse and its also not good for you .

I get severe migraines & I was told to try peppermint oil. You can find it at some special foods stores, I had mine special ordered at a pharmacy. It was around $10 for a small bottle, but you only use a few drops so it will last a long time. Dip a Q-tip into the peppermint oil and apply it where it hurts - forehead, temples, neck - careful not to get close to your eyes. Start with a tiny bit to be sure you're not sensitive and the vapors don't bother your eyes.. you might not feel the effect for a few minutes, so don't over apply it. This seems to last for a long time and produces a very nice cooling effect, also, the peppermint scent is said to relieve upset stomach which can sometimes come with a headache. You can add more if needed. If you lie down in a dark room with a ceiling fan lightly blowing this will make it more 'cool'.. also, if you use cloth ice packs, such a cloth bag filled with ice that has been kept in the freezer, you can apply 2 drops of the oil onto the pack - just don't place it directly onto your eyes. Hope this helps someone out there!

Everone says 'have a nice cup-a-tea, it will make you feel better' well i dont know if thats true for everthing, but it really does work for headaches and migranes. My mum suffers with migranes on a daily basis and perscription drus dont do anything. so as a coffee-lover(which in my opinion does not help, coffee just makes it worse, for her at least)and a tea-hater, she did not like the idea of my green tea suggestion. but she'd decided she would try anything. so i made her a small cup of lemon green tea(good old tetly)and mixed in half a tsp.of honey. her migraine was gone completly in an hour. its always her last resort but she knows that it will work.if this doesn't work for you then drink alot of fluid, you could be dehydrated. If THIS doesnt work it could be something to do with your eyes(this was the cause of my headaches when i was in school), go see your optitions or your doctor.thats it, im all out of answers, hope these work for you and remember, rest and quiet time is key

My life saver: A fan. I have a mini fan that I put on my bed with me and lay down with it about a foot from my face. The cool air feels amazing and the white noise seems to help also. I cant even imagine a migraine without it nowadays.
Also, I sometimes find the pain to be much worse when lying down flat so I stack my pillows up and try to fall asleep at a 45 degree angle. Once your comfortable, with the fan in your face of course, its amazing.
Dont forget two Excedrin Migraine pills. Nothing else over the counter really works for me but those seem to help.

So I have a few things that seem to work, a couple prevention and a couple tricks that help me when I feel like I'm thisclose to death.

1. As I've read already, B12 everyday has helped over time to reduce the frequency of migraines. They make some that dissolve under your tongue that are great for when your stomach is spasming and will not digest anything.

2. Magnesium - I've read this here too, but I think it helps me for another reason. It makes me go #2 everyday - and a lot, cleans me right out (sorry for the TMI). I noticed if I forget to take it, and haven't gone #2 for a while, I get a very bad migraine. Not sure why, but also when I finally go, I can feel my migraine let up.

3. Tea and Honey. I worked at an office that only had tea and honey, no coffee or sugar in the building. So I switched to drinking that and within a month, I went from my usual 6 migraines/month to two/month.

4. When I do get a migraine, I put an ice pack on the back of my neck, and a heat pack (a heavy bean-type pack works best for pressure) over my forehead/eyes. I rub peppermint oil on my chest so I breath it in and that seems to make the nausea better.

Hope this helps, even if it's just one person for one day. Knowing there are so many people who go through the same crappy thing I do makes me feel better. These other suggestions have been great - I'll definitly try the hot/cold shower since that mix seems to work well for me.

A cold cloth or ice pack on the back of the neck, a cold cloth on the forehead and lay down in a quiet dark room. If you can fall asleep that helps a lot also.

I found out accidentally that 250mg of Magnesium that i use for heart palpitations eliminated my migraines 100%.I took a Magnesium pill instead of the migraine pill as i started to see the aura and within 15 min. there was no sign of my migraine not even phantom pains I have not had ONE since i have been taking magnesium. It might just be me but i am sure glad to be rid of them(migraines).I watch my diet (red 40) and hold to it.

For 27 years, I took all kinds of over the counter pain pills. ( In excess ) I'm surprised I never created more problems. I went to a chiropractor who took x-rays of my whole spine. When I saw the x-ray, I couldn't believe it. The very first vertabre at the top of my neck was actually cocked sideways, causing to pinch a nerve. He worked with me, gently, 3 times a week, then 2, and then once a week. Got another x-ray, not only was my vertabre straight once again... But I have been migraine free for 2 years now. Good bye pills, I can now enjoy my children.

Hey um. I'm 13 years old and i also suffer from horrible migraines. I want to put in my own suggestion for getting rid of migraines. Usually i lay on the couch with all the lights off with a cold pack on my neck. Also, I wrap something like a wet rag tightly around my head. Then I nap. When I wake up, my migraine is almost always gone or very dull.

hey guys. first off, this forum is a real lifesaver, just knowing that there are so many people out there that have migranes like me is reassuring. god knows ive felt like a freak because i have them, but that's neither here nor there ...

my 'home remedy' suggestion is real straight-forward: pineapple!

pineapple was said to be a 'miracle' fruit, and upon some research, it seems to be. aside from hundreds upon hundreds of health benefits, i found that eating a serving of pineapple 1-2 times a day helps to relieve the symptoms of migranes. i've had them since i was 13, nothing seemed to help. for the last year, ive been doing the pineapple thing, and have since then seen an ENORMOUS drop-off in the severity and total number of migranes i get. really, its unbelieveable. now, whenever i go to the store, i make it a point to get either the cored pineapple, or the pre-cut, DOLE pineapple, both seem to work.eeded another reason to try!

My migraine remedy is a regular yoga practice. It has completely changed my life for the better. Yoga offers deep breathing techniques, stretching, increased circulation, stress relief and exerecise all in one. I used to get migraines up to a few times per week. I got to the point of serious depression and although Zomig worked well, I needed more pills than I could get or afford. I began a heated, vinyasa, power yoga practice anywhere from 3-6 days a week, and I rarely ever get a migraine. I haven't even filled a Zomig prescription in almost a year. I highly recommend adding yoga to your life. You will be a completely different person and pain free!

DMSO and MIGRAINE:
DMSO IS FDA APPROVED FOR HUMAN USE IF IT IS A U. S. P. or better purity. Approved use is for interstitial cystitis of the bladder.
A 30% gel with a TRACE of oil of Wintergreen is a very effective way to apply it. That way it cannot run into your eyes, and the 30% concentration won't sting on the forehead or neck.
dmso . org is the NON PROFIT site for DMSO information. Dr. Stanley Jacob is the discoverer of the properties of DMSO and maintains that site.
I purchase my DMSO products from Jacob Laboratories.
By placing the DMSO 30% gel on the forehead when aura or other beginning migraine signs appear, 10 people out of the 10 who have tried it in my area have the migraine disappear in 90 seconds. I refer you to Dr. Guyruron, who does migraine surgery after using Botox to find the trigeminal nerve center(s) that TRIGGER migraine.
The 30% DMSO gel certainly is vastly cheaper than surgery, and since it is non toxic(compared to Topamax and other anti-epileptics)is vastly safer and cheaper.
DMSO is a powerful anti inflammatory(not by traditional NSAID mechanism) and analgesic that penetrates the skin with only a slight taste/odor IF IT IS a PURE GRADE.
In 40 years NO ONE has ever been harmed by it that Dr. Jacob has ever heard of, and he has been searching his entire career to find ANYONE who has been harmed by it. Without any result.

Unfortunately, all of these remedies as fantastic as some of them are, depend on the cause of the migraine.I've had migraines quite litterally since birth. I was born with Hydrocephalus. It wasn't diagnosed until my early 30's.Yes that's rare but it does happen, in fact my nuerosurgeon featured my case in a medical journal for which he was writing an article about the disease. It's quite dibilitating and has been since day1. When I would complain to my mother she would (thinking I was faking)five me a small glass of gingerale and send me to bed. Needless to say it did nothing. The only thing that helps my pain is unconsciousness. The migraines are accompanied by vomiting, dizziness, grouchiness, and pressure over the entire head. A word of advice for all you parents out there: Unless you graduated from medical school YOU ARE NOT A DR!When your child complains of pain, believe her. No matter how often she 'plays sick'. Atleast have her checked out by a doctor. None of us like to think that our child may have somethin serious but it can and does happen. By the time I was diagnosed I was given 6 months to live. SIX MONTHS. The surgery saved my life. TAKE NOTHING FOR GRANTED

When my Imitrex isn't available, this is my back up remedy. Heat makes my migraines worse and guaranteed to cause my throw up, so I tend to go the ice route. I've found that filling the kitchen sink full of ice cold water (sometimes have to add ice to it and let it stand for a few minutes to get ice cold), submerge as much of your head (usually my eyes get submerged too) into the water, bending your neck so that your chin is touching your neck/chest, and leave as long as possible. Have a chair behind you in case you need to sit down. It is shocking and sometimes causes light-headedness. As soon as you remove your head, wrap your head in a towel and lay down on your back - knees raised to avoid additional body pain. Along with this treatment, I also take two Excederin gel tablets with any ice cold Pepsi or Coke (NOT DIET!)and I spray Afrin or the equivelant in each nostril. There are a lot of constrictions going on in the head during a migraine and these tricks together seem to alleviate the pains for me.

Acupuncture can help as a preventative too, but not all acupuncturists treat the same way so you might need to try a couple before you find the right one.

Good Luck!

I place a cold ice pack on the back of my neck sometimes, this way your blood tends to cool down a bit before it gets to the rest of your head. This has proved useful many times for me. I used to put the ice pack on my forehead, but that doesn't work as well as putting it on your neck.
I also try to keep myself from getting too hungry during the day by keeping something to snack on. Hunger is often a trigger for migraines.

WOW, HAVE to share this. After being unable to get out of bed for SIX hours today w/unbelievable migraine & associated nausea I found a miracle cure. My tried-and-true 1 dose of Exedrin Migraine didn't work at all this time (took a second, still didn't work and taking more in 24 hours can damage your liver - though dying from that at one point today seemed like a favorable option)...I remembered I had some Vitamin B3 (Niacin) at home and I know it dilates blood vessels....so I decided to take one 30mg capsule and in under THIRTY MINUTES my nausea & migraine DISAPPEARED!!! Yipeee!!! I was able to totally function after I took that. PLEASE get some Niacin!!Reading this forum also helped...interesting I was having MEGA cravings for pinneapple (ate half a can) and someone on here says that can really help with prevention....but the DRAMATIC improvement came with the Vitamin B3....don't try more than 30mg at a time...too much can dilate vessels so much can give you a REALLY uncomfortably flush that lasts hours. I weigh 107 and took 30mg. Hope this helps LOTS of peeps. Presciption drugs are for sheep and lemmings.

I have had migraines since I was about 18 yrs old. I have tried all kinds of new medication and nothing worked, I put pressure on my temples and that worked a little but I found a way to watch my kids and help the pain. I have my kids take turns sitting on my head. I know a little wierd but for a single mom with no one to help watch the kids so she can take a nap for 30 mins (more like 3 days) I found that it works and they often argue who gets to sit on mommys head.

I have had migraines since I was in second grade. A way to prevent them is to stay hydrated (hard for me because I go to school and I am not allowed to drink anything there) and never feel hungry. Sounds weird but I get my migraines before I eat because I am hungry and thirsty. I f you cannot prevent it then use this next advice. I have migraine medicine that I got at food lion. When I feel a migraine, I quickly take that. That doesn't help much though. So while the migraine is going on, I go to the bathroom. I always feel sick so I go there. Normally bathrooms don't have windows so turn off the lights and sit there. Also I drink something cold and caffeinated. NOT COFFEE!!! If you can lay towels on the floor and lay down, good. If you can sleep, then that is better. Just stay away from light and sound. As soon as it is gone, get food and drink until you need to pee. I also heard that cashews can keep away migraines. I hope this helps somebody.

Ok, so I HAVE to share this with someone who suffers from excruciating migraines so I can hopefully help some people out there who are suffering from this condition.

So for the past 6 months, I have been suffering from recurrent ovarian cysts that cause pain, soreness, fever, fatigue and irritability. Well, a few days ago I started getting headaches sooo bad that I couldn't move without throwing up from the intense pain. I tried 800mg ibuprophen, hydrocodone, tylenol and any and all pain relievers on the shelf to get rid of this. Nothing worked. I tried several home remedies to no avail. So I went to the refrigerator to get something cold to put on my head and saw that my boyfriend had left a monster energy drink on the shelf. I had tried everything, and who knows, it might just work. Low and behold! Ten minutes after drinking it, absolutely NO pain!! And now I had the energy to get my homework done and deal with my hyperactive little boy. THANK GOD!

I've read several articles on the internet claiming that caffeine and niacin help with the pain, which are all included in the energy drink, among other helpful vitamins. I must tell you though that I pretty much only drink water and the occasional sprite as a treat and this remedy might not work well if you already consume large quantities of caffeine daily, but it is definitely worth a shot.

THANK YOU MONSTER ENERGY DRINKS! NOW I CAN FINALLY KEEP A MEAL DOWN!

I had migranes for several years in my 30's and was taking very strong meds. One day my children noticed that I was getting a deep wrinkle between my eyebrows. Not wanting to have a permanent wrinkle there, I started rubbing it out every time I saw it. I found that as the wrinkle went away, the number of headaches I had did too. I have not had a migrane now for years - and no wrinkle either. I say vanity cured by migranes.

I have heard now that doctors are using BOTOX shots in that location (between the eyebrows) for migrane headache relief. I think you can do it yourself by just massaging that area several times a day.
Because of my experience, I believe that migranes are caused by tensing a certain head or neck muscle. If you can pinpoint that muscle and either massage it, or rest it in some way, that may solve migrane headaches.

The gravity and intensity of migraine is poorly understood. Migraine headache profoundly limits normal life of persons suffering from them. In addition migraine treatment is fraught with side effects that are poorly tolerated by some patients and contraindicated in many more. Advances in natural therapies (Biogetica) have made it possible to treat this condition in an aggressive yet sensitive manner. These safe, natural products optimize blood-circulation relieving pain and other symptoms like nausea and vomiting, which are associated with migraine. The therapy also focuses on the recurring nature of the condition and thus, gradually reduces the frequency and intensity of the attacks.

I have been suffernig from migraine attacks for the past 5 years. I have been on homeopathy since the past 3 years since I did not want to get addicted to Tylenol. My frequency used to about once per 2 weeks, but has recently increased to 2 times per week...which is what caused me to come looking for natural remedies for curing migraine attacks.
I think this one really works....I used it alternatively and the pain was gone in a few mins. One is pressure points. Press hard on the area between the Thumb and the Index Finger for about 5 mins. At the same time, also apply a cold towel to the back of your neck. Relax for about 10 mins. I could not beleive it coz of the first time my headache was gone in 10 mins flat.

I came into work and my friend was in extreme pain from a migraine. We immediately started looking up remedies and combining things we've tried in the past. She ended up icing her forehead and neck, then applied biofreeze to the back of her neck and ate some chocolate, and her migraine went away in 20 minutes after she'd had it for over 6 hours!

I find that in addition to staying hydrated, rested, and staying away from coffee, electrolytes seem to help. When the pain hits, I mix a glass of strong Gatorade into very cold water (I use the original flavor of Gatorade powder). If possible, I use electrolyte enhanced water (like Smart Water or the Trader Joe's brand).

Hello all,

My name is Michelle and I have a suggested remedy for migraines. I have had bad headaches since I was a kid but at age 28 I was diagnosed with migraines. I was seeing a specialist but the office visits were way too expensive. My husband works at a hospital and talked to the head nursing administrator about some remedies for me and this one works really well. I did it today while I was at work and the migraine subsided about 80-90%( I have very little discomfort about 5-10% right now and I feel a lot better)

The remedy entails: Take one sudafed pe maximum strength for nasal decongestant(the equate brand at wal-mart works just the same) and one regular execedrin or equate version of execedrin together with water. Wait for 30 minutes and then take an aleve caplets( I don't know how well the liquid gels work for this), then as a finishing touch drink a hot cup of tea(she did not specify what type so I just had a cup of green tea): I took this remedy starting at 4:45pm and it is 6:59pm and I feel great. I left work at 6:15pm and I felt better before then. I just wanted to share this with you all and hope for some positive results! Everyone be well and don't forget(we are all in this together)

Hi. I was getting migranes for about 4 years. Spent hundreds on doctors who only prescribed ridiculously strong and expensive drugs that made it impossible to function, and only masked the pain for a few hours before it came back.

At my wits end after a 7 day solid stint of migranes I discovered this site. I read through almost all the suggested remdies and noted the most popular to try.

Touch wood I have finally beated this thing! The magic cure is vitamin B2 plus magnesium.

I started taking 1 magnesium pill and 2 b2 pills a day, and then cut it down to just 1 magnesium pill and 1 b2 pill a day. If I feel a migraine coming on, I take another b2 pill and that takes it away. Also, a shot of coffee helps (I don't drink coffee usually).

It has now been 2 months since my last big migraine, when I was previously getting them once every 2 weeks or so for about 3 days in a row. I had a few 1 hour ones about 2 weeks after starting the vitamins, but now even they have gone.

I urge everyone to try this simple treatment (and stick with it daily for at least 2 months) and hope that you have as much success with it as I have.

This may sound silly but I've discovered two things that help, but don't cure migranes. They help in that, they relax my body enough that I can eventually fall asleep naturally without medication and sleep away the worst of the pain.

1) Let your jaw drop so that your mouth opens. This relieves the tension in the jaw and around your temples. Don't try to open your mouth wide, but if you simply let the bottom of your mouth dip, it can help alleviate pain stemming from your frontal lobe, or just above your eyebrows.

2) Buy a pack of fruit ice pops (the really wide ones that fill your whole mouth) and suck on one, but don't bite it. The cold actually numbs the inside of your mouth and radiates through the top of your head. Because you're only sucking on the ice pop you can consume it lying down which also eases the tension in your neck and lower back. If you do need to bite it, please sit back up to avoid choking. Once you've finished the ice pop try to fall asleep.

I was prescribed beta blockers and imitrex. Does nothing for prevention! I stopped and now I take daily b2, magnesium and feverfew... Believe me it works. Pick it up at vitamin world. On the occasion I should get a migraine I may pop two exceeding but mainly I drink yummy herbal teas and honey, in the pitch dark with ice on my neck and heat on my forehead/eyes with a fan blowing so I don't get over heated and to block out any outside noise. Then sleep! Also drinking peppermint tea and rubbing peppermint oil on my temples helps too!

I'm still working on the total elimination of my migraines. I have suffered with them since I was six or seven, I'm thrity-nine. My great grandmother had them before they were termed migraine. He sick headaches would put her in bed for a day or two. I treated them with tylenol until college. Then it completely quit working. Orudis KT worked wonderfully, but it is no longer available. I've gone through several years of trying different pain pills since then. Sometimes they work by themselves (not usually). Usually I have to use a variety of things. A hot compress, really hot (gel pack), across the eyes and forehead really helps. Gatorade helps take some of the pressure off the head while the medicine absorbs into the body. I don't know if its the electrolites or what? I hate gatorade so its like medicine to me. Another thing that helps is a light blocking eye mask. Got it at Walmart cheap. Blocks all light, and makes everything pitch black. When I was doing Atkins I hardly had any migraines. I'm sure that processed foods, white sugar, and flour have something to do with my migraines. Whole, natural, and non-processed foods seem to make a big difference. One more thing I've noticed is the barometric pressure. When it changes, snow or rain, I get migraines. A drastic change int he weather will trigger a migraine.

I hope this helps someone. If your like me you don't remember what a normal headache feels like. I will be trying the B3, and maybe the pineapple. Really glad to find this site.

I had an aura before a migraine and also rapid heart beat with vision loss. After entering the hospital a nurse came to me and said if I could, go to a neuromuscular therapist. I found one in Madison, WI. She did some manipulations of the muscles in my neck and then pulled my hair in the places where the pain was, this helped at that time, but today that did not work when I pulled my own hair. She had another idea that the Viet Nam people use and it is by pressing a muscle in the anus-I have not gone back for a try at that remedy. But, it is not out of the question.

I have a few remedies to share. The first one is drinking one to two cups of coffee (not green tea, as it doesn't contain enough caffeine per cup) and taking two acetamenophin and ibuprofen each. Cold and sinus medicine Is better if you have it. Caffeine in small to medium doses causes better blood circulation in your brain, and with anti-inflammatory or painkilling drugs in your blood, this usually kills the average headache. Also, I have to give props to having an orgasm or sex. Often, this kills off light migraines. The other remedy is only for the more adventurous and open minded, and obviously not for kids. Magic mushrooms or lsd have been proven to completely interrupt migraines if taken within the onset of the migraine (the aura). You don't need to overdo it; a half hit of lsd or a gram of mushrooms will do it. It works, and I'd rather be high all day and useless than writhing in pain and useless.

this may be kinda odd but masturbation has worked for me. it doesn't make it go completely away but the pleasure makes the pain almost go completely away. once again maybe odd to you but my boyfriend goes down on me and once i climax i'm worn out and go to sleep within a few mins. my migraines normally put me in the hospital because i throw up almost non stop until its just bile which is really bad for your throat. the pain sometimes gets so bad i pull hair out.
the only medicine for pain that has ever worked for me is Oxycontin (Oxycodone)(its known to be really addictive but it never was for me, be careful!) if i go to the hospital they give me a bottle of 10 of 30mg. i would love to get a prescription but my Dr wont :(
i'm going to try the red onion remedy i'll keep you guys posted!

Its about blood vessels behind the eyes... Near the sinuses. When my migraines respond to next nothing like you i resort to what seems silly. My mother had migraines and spotted mine early. My migraine cocktail is... Benadryl, ibuprofen800mg preferably, coffee, or nodoz. Also since your blood vessels are
Constricted, the idea is to sneeze a lot. So, pepper can help. But sneezing is not a gauarantee. So I will get a coffee filter and soak with vinegar, and like menthol etc rub afeccted aea.... And sniff the hell out of it..... Usually does the remanants of headache in.

Put a wash cloth on your forehead. Apply an ice pack on top of the wash cloth. Then take an ace bandage and wrap it around your head tightly securing the ice pack. Lay down in a dark room and nap for 30 minutes. The ice pack and pressure will ease the pain. The nap will relax you and alleviate the migraine.

This remedy for migraines has worked for me. Get an ice cold Slurpee and drink it fairly quickly to cause a brain freeze. It will dramatically reduce your headache. You can also make your own Slurpee at home with any drink mix. Be careful with what you eat. I find that the following foods can trigger mine: red wine, some Italian foods, and McCormick Grillmates is the worst offender. I just had an attack and drank my Slurpee and my headache is gone. I just feel tired now. It is a lot better than suffering for hours!

I discovered that putting Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) on my temples & neck following the onset of a migraine GREATLY reduces the pain & impact. Instead of lasting two to three days, they are reduced to one day! Instead of going online or to a health food store, I buy it by the quart at (believe it or not!) 'Animal Feed stores'! Saves a lot of money...

Migraine help naturally -

I take Butterbur and Feverfew daily. I have been getting hormonal migraines with the onset of a period. Caffeine helps dilate the blood vessels.
I take it easy and try to relax. Quiet and dark.

The cold pack on the neck as many other people mentioned helps. Sometimes I have to go to the ER which is awful! I cannot take Imitres. Sometimes in the past a shot in the butt of Toradol works fine. But it is still a pain in the ass for a couple of days. Better than a continuing migraine.

Fold a bath towel about 4 inches wide and wrap it around your head. Tie a knot in the towel and put a wood dowel through the knot and turn the dowel until the towel tightens and the pain is gone. Every 2 mins, release the stick one turn until it can be slipped off.

I've found that when your head feels likes its literally splitting in half,I take an ace bandage and rap it around my head as tight as needed. usually just as tight as it will stretch. Then I leave it on till it hurts, then take it off till it hurts and then back on. Has helped the pain enough that I've able to fall asleep and have a chance of waking up tomorrow without one.

This remedy works and is the best I've ever tried.
Cup both of your hands under hot running water, as hot as you can stand it.
Turn off the lights, MEDITATE by clearing your mind, and let the hot water run over your cupped hands for 20 minutes. Don't cheat! The pain relief starts around 15 minutes in and by the time you're done, it's gone!
I had a migraine for the last two hours and I just finished the technique. Now my migraine is gone!
Remember: The hottest water you can stand running over your palmed hands under the faucet, and MEDITATE by having zero thoughts. A dark room is best.
THIS WORKS!

I suffer from migraines since the age of 18, that usually last 3-4 days. Mine are triggered by nitrates, hormones and my low blood sugar! Lucky me!!! I have found that sticking to a nitrate-free, high protein diet helps for the days between my cycle. During my cycle, I have found that 'Stress relief' from bath and body works is great. I also have my husband...he rubs from my neck, shoulders, back, and then my feet with the stress relief lotion and if this doesn't help. He will PINCH the area between my thumb and index finger. It hurts like crazy but it relieves the nausea and the pain. When day two comes around...it's hot tea all day long! Usually I have no appetite. I just experienced one of my worst ones yesterday...triggered by malt vinegar and fried fish!!! None of my remedies worked until day 2, but a doctor I work with prescibed me a barbituate(small dose) and it took the edge off..but made my life tolerable today.

I'm 17 years old. I've had migraines since i was an infant. My mom remembers seeing me all the way back when i was 3 years old holding my head saying my head hurts mommy and crying and having the usual vomiting episode..anyway, ive been to a neurologist, i left with a hand full of prescriptions of anti seizure medicine for preventatives, which i got Topamax and the classic Imitrex and anti inflammatory drugs..as most of you know these only work half the time and are very expensive.. but when all else fails (because usually it does with my luck with migraines) i
1. definitely use a old timey ice pace with a screw on cap and fill it up as much as you can with ice because it'll melt fast and i like to have mine through the night and the next thing in the morning or vis versa..
2. i have migraines in my temples usually on one side of my head so i heard that peppermint oil relieves pain from migraines so one night i was willing to try anything and i found that Vick's Vapor Rub or any kind of vapor rub works if you put some on the hurting area just dont get it into the eyes OUCH ive done that on accident before..
3. Also, my neurologist suggested that to always have Gatorade around, coke or Pepsi whatever you prefer and a little piece of chocolate..
Gatorade has electrolytes that hydrate you and they are actually salts good sodium that helps blood flow..
Coke or Pepsi gives you a kick in blood sugar and of course caffenine..
The small piece of chocolate also helps in blood sugar and phenylethylamine (PEA). PEA is the chemical in chocolate that may cause the blood vessels to expand and contract. However, it's also a natural mood enhancer, stress reliever and memory enhancer. So once again, it may have more good than bad for some people if your thinking about weight or whatever. so that all works together for a headache.. i always just keep Hershey Kisses around and eat one or two! :)
thats all my tricks to the trade.. ive gotten a few new ones from this website too browse through everyones.. it can never hurt to try something if you know how migraines really are..

I mostly suffer from menstrual migraines, which occur throughout the week leading up to my period (usually three days at a time). Sometimes stress or other factors will trigger them randomly during the rest of the month, but those are never as severe as the hormonal causes. My 'aura' is not anything visual - instead, I often feel very dizzy, disoriented, or just a general feeling of weirdness in the hours prior to a migraine. There is not a specific side the pain occurs on, rather I feel it in the center of my brain.

Most of the time the pain level isn't too high (of course there are times it feels excruciating, as if a knife were literally in my head), but no matter what pain level, my migraines are ALWAYS accompanied by light and sound sensitivity and nausea. :(

I am also extremely susceptible to motion sickness. I have been recently experimenting with drug-less cures for my motion sickness. I purchased a pair of Seabands for a long road trip a few weeks ago - they worked well for my motion sickness!

SO! Today, I felt the aura or on-coming of a migraine, so I put my Seabands on. While they have done nothing for the head pain or light/sound sensitivity, I definitely noticed myself feeling far less nauseous than usual! So unlike last month where I was literally vomiting. :)

I generally do not like to medicate; Tylenol and Advil do nothing for my migraines. If I have to work, I will occasionally take Excedrin Migraine, which at least takes an edge off the pain, but still leaves me sensitive to light/sound and nauseous. I have not seen a doctor to be diagnosed or treated, which I should probably do.

I have little advice in the way of prevention methods, but I do find that smoking a small amount of marijuana helps me cope with the severe nausea. I used to smoke frequently in college and it worked quite well. I not longer smoke, so I often wish I did. On those nights when I'm curled up in a dark room crying, masturbating DOES help me cope, too, so don't be afraid to try it!

Best of luck, everyone! Thank you for the suggestions you've listed. I will be trying them out! :)

I have to take prescription prevention medication (twice a day) because I get about 10 migraines a month if I don't. It works almost completely, but I still get one or two mirgraines a month. I find that I can stop the migraine from going from bad to worse if I breathe evenly and deeply through my nose, using my diaphragm.

for relief of migraines, i put ice compresses around my temples/ears and let it sit there for about a half hour at a time. I was getting real annoyed because it was hard to hold it to my face for that long so I discovered this thing called an ice caddy. It's a velcro contraption that goes around ones head that has pockets to put icepacks in. I can ice my face while being hands free at the same time, it's pretty neat.

I have had migraines since 1995 - after my son was born. I do admit that Imitrex Injections have been a life saver for me. I only take one if nothing else works. Peppermint Oil is great. You can rub it right on your temples, neck, etc. IT WILL BURN but it's a good kind of burn. It feels better than the headache. It may not cure it, but it will calm it. Be careful not to get in your eyes. If you don't want to apply it topically, then place a few drops of the oil on cotton balls, and put in a baggie. Open the bag and inhale as needed. If you can't get your hands on the peppermint oil, then Bengay will work. Again be careful with your eyes. Moist heat also helps - just place a dry cloth or handtowel in the microwave and heat for at leat 10 seconds - only as hot as you can stand it. Place on your neck and/or head. No need to wet anything - a natural moist heat is created.

I am seventeen years old, and I have been suffering with migranes since I was about 12 or 13 years old. One day, I had stayed home from school and was by myself and had to come up with a way to get my migrane to go away. I took my imatrex and that just made me throw up. I took pamprin, which did nothing. Finally, I looked through all of our herbal hot teas and mixed four packets together. Lemon ginger, tropical green tea with pineapple, green tea with camomil, and lemon and spice. It may sound disgusting, but if ur a hot tea drinker, it was delicious. I also had made myself a huge bowl of chicken noodle soup. That seemed to help out a great deal.

I hope my remedy works for you all. It definatly worked for me!

Chew on a piece of bitterroot until you can't stand the taste, then spit it out. Alternatively, burn the root and inhale the smoke if you're too nauseated to deal with unpleasant tastes.

DUTTA-31yr- BANGALORE- 3yr old migraine

If all is well in our body vessels should be fine.. I was fighting migraine for last 3 yr every week without knowing that it is migraine... Recently I googled headache+one side + reliev+ vomiting.
I concluded that I have migraine and i luckily joined yoga+ meditation workshop same time which I practice everyday. One day when I had nausea and I was due with my daily 'Sudarahan Keiya' .... I decided to go ahead with Kriya... To my surprise it was gone 40-60% within 30 mins of kriya and 90% in next 1-2 hours.
I decided to devote myself more and do it regularly... Which has helped me by not having severe migraines and if it comes it is in controllable state JUST BELIEVE when NAUSEA starts that 'SUDARASHAN KRIYA' will work.

I learned the simple stitch in crochet and it amazingly helps when I run out of meds and can't pick any up....the doc on the program said it has to do with the seizure part of the migraine. Also for those who can't afford to get expensive meds all the time the Goody brand powders that many places sell are cheap and simple but it is a powder that goes under your tongue or can be mixed with a liquid and it goes to work fast and it does work!

Rub in menthol muscle relaxer on neck and shoulders, 5min rub in circular motions on temples and forehead, put a dab under/on tip of nose to open up. Lift up base of skull to relieve pressure, else hang neck/head over edge of bed for a short while. Rotate and extend neck in 360 degrees 4-5 time each direction. Later a hot compress, massage chair with stretch program and a hot bath.

I seem to suffer from seasonal migraines (as far as I can tell) as they usually wills start in January and then by May/June I won't have another until the following January. During my 'migraine season' I will get them 2-3 times a month, usually in the morning, often I will wake up with one starting. I am lucky in that I will have an 'aura' before. My aura consists of bursts of light they look like when you stare at a light for too long and you get the after image. Sometimes I will lose vision in one eye because there are so many bursts of light. Anyhow, what I do when I get a aura, I immediately take 2 extra strength advil (ibuprofen), I chug 2 mugs of coffee, use the bathroom and eat something as quickly as possible (my migraines usually make me nauseous so I end up not eating for hours). Something about this combination works for me, as if I do this process very quickly after an aura starts the migraine will be mild or nonexistant. Just my two cents!

I don't really have a remedy for preventing migraines, but I do have a couple suggestions for dealing with the pain. I actually feel one coming on right now, so I am on this page, and eating a can of pineapple - so I will let you know if that works. I am currently on amtriptyline (which I was told is an anti-depressant) but it has been working wonderfully up until this point. 50mg a day and it has warded off my migraines for almost 2 months. I was avoiding any meds because I didn't like the idea, but then my migraines were averaging two a week - and there was just no choice - I am sure my job was starting to think I was a huge slacker. Any how, my husband has been doing a lot of research because he hates me being on meds as well. THE BIGGEST life saver I have found once you already get a migraine is meditation. This may sound crazy, to think you could be calm with a migraine, but if you can get your body calm you can then fall asleep and meditation puts you in the kind of sleep where you don't wake up until its over. I started with counting - take a breath in then out - and count each one up to twelve - every time you think about the pain or something else - you have to start over - usually if I can make it to 8 without thinking about anything else I am already asleep. I have gone a little further to body relaxation - where I start at my toes and think about every body part being completely relaxed - and once again by the time I get to my waist I am asleep. It takes a lot of mind control and the first couple times I thought I was going to die before falling asleep, but if you can learn to do it, it truly does helps! And like the others who have stated this before - I do find an orgasm to help too! But that is truly only temporary - If i can have one then I fall asleep, usually I wake up and it is still there, BUT any time you don't have to feel a migraine is worth it!

Friends I am suffering from migrane for @ 10 years. High protein food like nuts, spicy food, corbonated drinks, hot summer triggers it and whole day is painful. Recently I found two cures for this pain. One is frequently taking green tea with lime in it (after meal works very well) and second one is water therapy. In the morning on empty stomoch drink two glasses of warm water with salt in it, sit and vomit by putting fingers in throat, another is passing warm water with salt in it through nose and allowing it to flow through the another nose and changing it. The second therapy is a naturopathy taught by our naturopathy (Jindal Nature Cure).

Off course the last resort is Migranil which works in 30 mins to 1 hour

After 36 hours of migraine mayhem... I am well enough now to visit this site. I have suffered with migraines for approx. the last 5 years. I have chronic lower back and neck pain, but my migraines are triggered by varies things.

My close friend is a doctor and has treated me for migraines with an injectible 'cocktail' at his clinic, but I have moved from his clinic and now must get my home pain remedies via the telephone. I asked him what I could take at home that would relieve the migraine and keep me from jumping off the nearest bridge. I had some nausea this time, but fortunately no vomitting, so this remedy was an option....

2 Tylenol and 3 Liquid Gel Advils...

And for me.... LIGHTS OUT! I am light sensitive during my migraines so turning out all the lights is a necessity. That means no TV, no candles, nothing that emits ANY light. Complete darkness is key.

(This remedy was prescribed by MY doctor, he knows me, my body, and my medical history. Please consult your physician before taking any medicine in larger doses than is recommended by the manufacturer.)

And here I am feeling much better and wondering why I always wait so long to get help for my migraines. I'd also like to thank all of those who have posted tips to prevent migraines and home remedies that may ease and relieve my migraine pain. I will certainly be giving those a try. Thank you!

I just thought I would post this because I suffer from chronic migraines, and nothing has ever helped relieve the pain greatly. Only by taking a codeine pain killer has ever had some mediocre results, but only on occasion. Tonight I had the fortune of finding a natural remedy effective almost immediatley to the point of just very minor tension, nothing close to even a basic headache. I like to try different foods when the migraine hits, and for the first time by chance, I ate something with raw purple/red onions on it. Everything else on the food I've tried before with no luck. But the red onion almost worked immediatley and made the migraine so dismal its like I didn't have one anymore. I suggest trying to eat raw purple/red onions whether by itself or on food. Cooking it might lose its effect, so try to bare with it being raw. Good luck and let me know if this works for anyone else. I try it again next time I have a migraine. All the best.

Migraines are dreadful things. I've had one for a week now. Sleeping only makes it worse for me and no medication ever helps.

I know smiling or laughing may be the last thing you want to do, but it actually helps me. Sure being around loud noises or going out to have fun may not be your thing, but think of a good memory and try smiling and you'll possibly realize that the headache/migraine is gone.

And, take one Tylenol, one Motrin and one Excedrin together. If your stomach is sensitive to aspirin, leave off the Excedrin and take two Tylenol with one Motrin. Alka Seltzer for colds works in place of the Excedrin.

Here are 3 home remedies for migraine or headache.

Method 1

Three people with migraine have found success with this, none of whom had ever experienced success any other way in their long history of migraine. One totally eliminated her migraine by doing it at the VERY FIRST MOMENTS of the beginning of her migraine, and the other two who tried it after the migraiine had fully set in. However the drawback is that it took longer than the people who stared at the tv snow (described in my other thread) with the sound off, method 1.

Putting our hands in the same position as the fetus places his hands in the womb most commonly, up like a boxer, near the chin or clavicle. hold it reasonably still, nothing in the hand, one hand is fine, no need for both, both are only slightly better, and if lying down on your back, you can rest your hand on your upper chest, but curl your fingers so your fllat palm doesnt rest on your upper chest, only the back of your fingers and the heal of your palm will be resting on your chest, wihich is stronger in effect. .

This aspect of the fetal position is enormously healing. However it will not work I have found, if you smoked a cigarette on the day you treat, or if you are near man made radiation from cell phone, computer equipment, or a flat screened tv. or a modern radio. The flat screened tv radiation can stop the body from being beneficially stimulated up to 17 feet away from it I have found. Things that suppress the immune system, as do any drug that affects the nervous system, like the synthetic opiate pain killers, will greatly reduce the beneficial effect I have found.

Lying flat has a bad effect on the brain, according to a book written by two college professors, and I agree in my experience, so see if you can lie with your upper body and of course your head elevated. You dont want to elevate only your head TOO much, and not the upper body because too much of an angle reduces oxygen to the brain. Do this fetal hand thing hour after hour and it should gradually, steadily cure your migraine, and some improvement occurs during the first half hour as per the experience of the others who tried it.

Method 2

IF I sit or lie in a pitch black room, absolutely zero light, which can probably only be achieved in a very very dark room AND also putting something opaque over the eyes, like two sweater sleeves, so not one scintilla of light comes in, and then keeping the eyes open all the time, if you close them except to blink, even momentarily, the effect will be lost. WHat this does is create a form of sensory deprivation which perhaps imitates what occurs in the womb and at about the twenty minute mark of doing this does trigger beneficial healing I have found and puts me in an altered state, which triggers the healing if I continue to do it. Studies back this up re sensory stimulation, re the altered state, This has not yet been tried for migraine, but it has a shot, I have some indication that theta waves are created by doing this, a very healing state so says the internet..

Method 3

This one worked for me in my one migraine. At the very first sign of the migraine, I closed my eyes in a dark room and visualized an object in my minds eye,I knew from before that this puts me iinstantly iin an altered state of some sort, again perhaps theta. I used my thumbnail to visualize, try that first, and when I was able to bring that vision of my thumbnail in my minds eye into perfect focus, zero fuzziness, total clarity, the same as looking at your thumbnail or whatever object you choose, maybe something from your garden , when your eyes are open, whoosh my migraine instantly totally aborted. Perhaps too this can be successful even on a more intrrenched migraine. One person I knew did try this for a full blown migraine after it had been firmly established and said she just couldnt bring the object in clearly. One thing that has helped me to bring my thumbnail in clearly if I am otherwise unable to do so, is to stare at my thumbnail with my eyes open and then quickly close them such that the image remaiins clear in my mind for a second or two.

Hope one of these works for someone.

Feverfew leaf. You can grow it in your backyard. Do an online search for benefits & possible side effects.

As an aside, I've noticed that quite a few answers here include drinking soda. I would advise against anyone drinking soda for any reason. There are enough more natural remedies than ingesting phosphoric acid (which degenerates bones) & high fructose corn syrup (diabetes epidemic), amongst other questionable ingredients, that one shouldn't have to turn to soda.
