I live in Manicou River Eco Resort on the Caribbean island of Dominica in the West Indies where we treat and care for local dogs. Ocho came to us with a low immune system and gets recurring mange. We have tried the chemical treatment but it was very harsh on her. We also tried neem oil without very good results. I took her to see the vet who works with PAWS the rescue dog charity and was recommended a local treatment.
2 liters of Seawater (or salt water)
½ a Calabash. (Or bottle gourd or opo squash not to be confused with the calabaza) Scoop out the fleshy insides of the calabash and squeeze into seawater
3 fresh limes squeezed and mixed with the seawater & calabash
Strain and coat the dog in the liquid. Do not rinse for 2 days and rinse and repeat the process twice.
Fantastic results! No more mange and she started to grow her shiny new hair back as soon as the treatment finished. Very happy Ocho Dog.

I am reporting back about my German Short Hair Pointer having mange at base of tail. I tried the home remedy and she stopped itching and it looked good the next day. By the end of the next day, she was biting at area and now was irritated. I remember reading about making the borax solution with less water. At this point, I made a paste of it. Using a sponge, I concentrated on the base of the tail and a little wider. She seemed to be ok, maybe it bothered her at first, but a few minutes later after reassuring her its ok, she was fine. I did this outside in the sun and stayed outside with her until it dried completely. I knew some of it would fall off. What was left did a great job that was on her area for hours. The next day her bare spot had not been red, or irritated. In fact, the hair had started to grow back! Next, I checked her for fleas with the NIT comb. (Love it, fleas can't dodge this one, picks up all flea dirt too!) Unfortunately, I found many of them. I washed her again in Seargent's Oatmeal Flea & Tick Shampoo really concentrating on her back and belly area. I probably spent almost 10 min massaging her down with the shampoo to kill these awful fleas. (Now being 2 days later from last shampoo) Chloe loved the massage! After drying her off, she was happy and not itching. I treated my 2 boxers with the Sentry PRO Monthly Flea, Tick & Mosquito Treatment. I will treat Chloe in a few days not wanting to overdo it with her. My backyard will be treated after it stops raining and carpets. Their bedding has been washed again in Borax too. I will use white vinegar (that I also read in my home remedies) for my carpets adding it to my carpet cleaner. For the past 3 days, my dogs have been getting 1 oderless garlic capsule everyday to repel ticks and fleas. My dogs don't mind it! Thanks for all the suggestions!

I tried the suggested borax cure, and my bichon isn't reacting well. Perhaps his skin is just too sensitive. I did a little more research and found this great natural remedy that's inexpensive and sounds like it's a miracle cure for every type of pest problem--it's cedar based. Lots of good article on the site about why mites are getting worse, why you shouldn't use frontline or advantage, etc. I haven't tried this remedy yet, but the articles and testimonials sound great. And whereas borax can be toxic, this remedy isn't. I'm ordering this for myself today!
do a search for 'the cedarcide store'

Mange- We have a dog kennel and in the last 13 years have had two of our pups get d. mange. The cost was unbelievable for treatment, and was not working. We decided on a whim to try tea tree oil shampoo and the actual oil to the spots. Within two days, the areas had a whitish scabbing and within a week you could see the hair in ths spots growing back. We also started adding yeast tablets and garlic to their diet. Not sure which worked, but with the three items above, we are now mange free.

And Used it all up DON'T RINSE your Dog let it stay on your dog, Let Your Dog Drop Dry. I Just Layed A Towel On Her Favorite Spot and let her dry. It Cleared Up Over Night. My Dog Is Totally A New Dog. She Dont Itch no more. I am Gong To Do This Again In About A Week To Make Sure The Mange Is Gone. This Remedy Is A Wonder!

BORAX AND PEROXIDE AND PETROLIUM JELLY
I got the borax and peroxide remedy off of here and I added a few more steps to be really sure to kill the mange mites.
First, take a bucket of warm water and add as much borax as you can until it doesn't dissolve anymore. Then add a few ounces of peroxide. Then on the side, get a bowl and make a paste out of the borax laundry booster and peroxide. Then sponge the dog completely with the borax-peroxide dip. After that, rub the paste all over the dog and let it dry. Finally, rub some petrolium jelly all over the dog, to smother the mange mites. This is very messy so keep the dog outside, and do not wash it off. Repeat once or twice a week until the mange is gone. This worked wonders for my white boxer who had hereditary mange. Before, his skin was very pink with sores, and almost all his hair had fell out. Almost immediatly his skin and sores healed and his hair started growing back.

My name is Chelsi and I have a 1yr old Husky/Rot. She got mange from my cousins dog months ago. We took her to the vet and the little guys finally cleared up. But still after all this time she has all these patchy spots and scabs and bleeding to the bare skin on her tail. I have two major concerns before I try the borax and peroxide. Open wounds okay with this treatment? All effected areas on her face, okay with this treatment? Please tell me your thoughts and opinions on these two things. I need to know before I try it on her. Thank you so much!! I hope this works!!

Tried the borax and peroxide treatment on my 9 month old bulldog puppy and it started drying up the affected area almost immediately(Within a day).Reapeated treatment every 3 days after for two weeks and all healed and she is starting to grow her hair back.
Formula:
8 ounces of hydrogen peroxide,4 cups warm water,8 heaping tablespoons of 20 Mule Team Borax.
Mix till Borax diluted and apply with sponge till dog is soaked.Leave on wet and pen dog up till dry.Repeat as need every few days.Works on Bulldog pups but can't attest to other breeds or if the mange will return after a period of time. It has only been a couple of weeks since I stopped treatments.

I have been reading about the mange.
The motor oil remedy is very dangerous. An animal with low immunity will get kidney and liver permanent damage from the petroleum products. Do not do this.
Even petroleum jelly is not recommended.
I recommend working from internal aspect.
Its the toxins in the pet food. Dog food that is not human grade including I AMs is made from rendered meat. This is the source of all grocery store dog feed. It is full of toxins and they build up in the animals system.
To help the animal once you have the mites under control find a Human grade dog food. A few examples are Prairie by Natures Variety. Fromme, Avoderm, all these kind of foods will state that they protein is human grade. Stay away from the tainted stuff. Purina etc all bad news. Use Salmon oil and enzymes in the food. These are some tips that can make a huge difference long term.

My mini pin had some mange on his face. I washed him with organic tea tree shampoo (the human kind), then put some aqueous tea tree antiseptic oil mixture directly on the affected area everyday for three days. I could see the difference after one day. It was completely gone after a week and now, two months later, there's been no sign of it.

Zinc taken orally has a marvellous rapid healing effect on the skin. It should be taken regularly every day. It also acts as a preventive. Scientists have found it even prevents the malarial parasite from entering the skin.
Zinc is very much associated with protein foods. Thus, you may assume that most foods high in zinc are protein-rich as well.
The best sources of zinc include beef, lamb, pork, crabmeat, turkey, chicken, lobster, clams and salmon.
If you are a vegetarian, you will most probably intake less zinc that those who have meat-based diets.
Wikipedia says - When there is adequate zinc in the soil, the food plants that contain the most zinc are wheat (germ and bran) and various seeds (sesame, poppy, alfalfa, celery, mustard). Zinc is also found in beans, nuts, almonds, whole grains, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and blackcurrants.
Good zinc food sources aside from meats are dairy products such as milk and cheese, yeast, peanuts, beans, and wholegrain cereals, brown rice, whole wheat bread, potato and yogurt. Of all these vegetarian zinc foods, pumpkin seeds offer one of the most concentrated non-meat food sources of zinc.
Recommended Daily Allowance: The RDA of 3 mg for infants, 10 mg for children, and 10-15 mg for adults is suggested. Growing children, pregnant and lactating women need more.
A dog would probably need as much as a human infant

I came across this site about three weeks ago. I have a female pit named Diamond, who started with these crusty spots with hair loss. There were a few in the beginning and then all of sudden, her whole body was covered with the spots and significant hair loss. I tried the peroxide and Borax mixture, but made it more watery (diluted) so she would not vomit. After one application, her skin dried out and looked like a bad case of dandruff. After one week her hair had started to regrow and now after three weeks her coat is so thick and shiny. She is a year old and I have never seen her coat look so thick and full. The peroxide and Borax really does work. P.S.--You can make it more watery, I filled up a bucket and poured the solution all over her. She never vomited and is a pretty girl now. Thanks a million for your help. Mrs. G.

Okay! So last week I had read several blogs here that said to try the Borax and Peroxide combo! My mastiff got mange and we are guess its from all the feral rabbits that run around our house, as we have noticed that they have the hairloss assiciated with mange and he hasnt been around any other dogs but ours! So.. back to remedies, noticed that husbands pug was scratching, had hairloss the whole nine yards and I had heard that Desitin, yes the diaper rash ointment.. worked wonders.. well, on the mastiff I put teh Borax mix and the pug the desitin! I have to say I am so PRO DESITIN for mange, our pug, has no redness, no more scratching and in just a few days where she had no hair, its back... her whole under belly was bald and now she has a great looking layer of fine hair!!! DESITIN ALL THE WAY!!!!!!! My mastiff on the other hand, not as red, still scratchy, so I think that I am gonna buy stock in Desitin as he is 200 lbs!!!

I have two shar pei's with really, really bad skin problems. We tried everything under the sun and they kept getting worse. They were itching, chewing, scratching, biting and shaking themselves to death. It was so BAD we thought we were going to have to put one of them down.We tried all kinds of meds from the vet, home remedies, and anything we could think of to help them.Nothing worked Untill i came across this home remedy that said to mix A WHOLE TUBE OF A&D OINTMENT,A WHOLE JAR OF COCO BUTTER,1 SHOT GLASS FILLED WITH OLIVE OIL,AND A WHOLE TUBE OF DESTIN OINTMENT TOGATHER. I mixed these things togather and smeared my dog that was the worst with it i put a doggy cone on his head so he wouldent lick himself and get sick.I put ihim in his cage only letting him out to go outside. He slept in his cage for a day & a half then i repated the process with my second dog. After about 3 days they seemed a little better.Within a week they were alot better and 3 or 4 weeks later they were almost completely healed. It has been about 7 months since i put the mixture on them and they are completely better. All there hair has grown back they hardley ever chew, scratch,or bite.Im telling you if it wasnt for this home remedy i would have lost at least one of my dogs if not both. I hope this works for you and MAY GOD BLESS ALL OF YOUR DOGGYS. ANGIE

I just tried the borax and peroxide paste (and vaseline) on my Great Pyrenees. I took him to the vet last week and spent $70.00 for dip and oral meds, he was still itching quiet a lot. The peroxide/borax paste did upset his stomach as he insisted on licking it, but it was very temporary and this STOPPED his itching completely- immediately. I can see a difference already and I just used it yesterday. It is important that you do not get boric acid and borax confused. borax is in the laundry detergent area of WalMart, usually sold under the brand name 20 Mule Team. The borax was $2.50 and the peroxide was $1.00. Borax is good to wash pet toys and blankets, etc in as well, it will kill the mites there too. It is recommended to wash items that can't be washed in hot water and dried in a dryer for all pests, such as lice and mites. Also he didn't run from me when I applied the paste as he did when I sprayed the dip on him. The dip was very painful it appeared as he would run when he saw the spray bottle after the first time I used the dip (from the vet) he doesn't seem to mind the paste and enjoyed the 'massage' when I applied it.

After Reading all the remedies for mange, I decided to go by the most talked about remedy with the Borax. We discovered that there was lump under our German Short Haired Pointer. (who adopted us - stray) Since she is black/white ticking with black liver spots, we never noticed the lump at the base of her stumpy tail. When I initially looked at it, I didn't understand what it was since it was all scabbed over under her fur. I did detect some fleas on our 2 boxers and with a NIT comb (excellent for finding fleas in short coats) checked our German Short Haired Pointer. Since she did have them too, I thought this was a bad case of fea dirt! I have never delt with fleas before, only ticks. I used Seargeant's Oatmeal flea and tick shampoo right away. Afterwards, I noticed some of the hair coming off the base of the Pointer's tail. I figured it softened it up and fell off. By morning there was a round bare spot at the base of her tail that looked good. I read in one of the suggestions to use a flea and tick shampoo and leave on for 5 min. I scrubbed all areas, being gentle by her tail. At this point, I have not called the vet and assuming she has the derm mange. I am curious to see if I can head this off. I have just come back from getting the supplies for the borax solution and will try it. She is still biting and itching her bare spot. I hope the other dogs don't get it. I am going to wash all bedding in borax. Will report back to everyone! Thank you for the suggestions!

I am a yellow lab with sensitive skin and my family thinks I have mange again at the base of my tail. My owner got a recipe for a cure off TV about a year ago. It had vinegar, tea and I think peroxide in it, she calls it my 'taily bone medicine'. Everytime it itches she applied it to the affected areas. It made it feel better and stopped the ithching. Within a few days my skin healed and the hair grew back. Does anyone know the exact measurements and ingredients? I am afraid she is going to run out.

This is for mange in a dog. It sounds stupid but it works. Take bacon grease, just plan ordinary bacon grease, not the grease from maple sugar, or peppered bacon. Apply this to the mange areas on the dog using a metal teaspoon, really rub it in. Apply several times a day for 2 weeks. I have used this in a pinch and let me tell ya, it maybe messy but it works.

DO NOT USE BORAX!!!!!
According to the EPA, borax causes neurotoxicity, citing reports of poisoning in human infants who ingested a mixture of borax and honey. Researchers do not conduct actual toxicity studies on humans. Data from animal studies show borax toxicity effects on blood and the reproductive systems of dogs, rats, and mice.
A wet dog will lick himself and ingest the Borax, which accumulates over time to become a lethal dose. One tablespoon, accumulated over time is lethal to a full grown human.

I bought the pure coconut oil as a back up to the botax and peroxide treatment and i used the coconut oil first. I just Poured the whole can of melted coconut oil and left him outside in a crate overnight in a cool area and bathed him the next morning. I used a hydrocortisone shampoo and rubben hydrocortisone cream on his red irritated 'itchy' areas. I also used HOT SPOTS gel you can buy at petsmart because he had sores rotating with tea tree oil on the sores. Two weeks later his coat was beautiful. I do this once a month at least. I also saw fleas sliding down when the oil was setting. I never had to use the botax and peroxide. Coconut oil is safe to ingest as well. It has recommendations to use orally as well. Im not sure if he had mange or just a heat rash bacterial infection either. Hope this helps.

Coconut oil is recognized for its beneficial effects on the skin and it was shown to kill mange, which don't survive well in oily environments.

This really works!
Our dog name is Sheba and she had mange around the age of 6months old. We took her to the vet specialist and it became too expensive after a few months. Because after the medication ran out, a month later she would get it again. Finaly the vet told us we could get the same medication that he gets for way cheaper at the Cattle Feed & Supply.
The medication is called (Ivomec 50ml)it used on swines for parasites. It cost around $35.00. We gave her the medication daily for the first 1year. The second year we used it every 2 to 3 days a week for 1 year. After that we have not had anymore problems. Just know, that the mange will not go away quickly it may take a year or more for the parasites to completely die. It's now been 11 years and Sheba is alive and mange free! You can order from AMAZON.com & from cattle feed suppliers.

NU-STOCK!!! My chihuahua got mange a couple years ago. I identified it as demodex mange. I tried with no luck to use the borax and hydrogen peroxide treatments. It made her skin so dry and I just didn't think it worked well at all. I finally did some research and our local farm store carries something called NU-STOCK which contains sulfer and it worked like magic. I only had to use it like two or three times. You put it on, let it sit for a few minutes, and give them a bath. It stinks, but it is cheap and works awesome!!!!!!! Her mage was improving within days. It took a while for all her hair to grow back, but I saw a difference within a few days of using it. I think it was only like 9 bucks too.

For mange
take one entire lemon, slice it (do NOT peel leave the peeling on) Prepare boiling water as if you were making a tea, drop the lemons in and let it seep overnight. The next day apply to skin sponging it on Its safe non toxic if the dog licks it and acts as a repellent as well

I attempted the hydrogen peroxide and Borax home remedy on two 10 week old kittens with Notoedric mange (skin mites). Both kittens ended up vomiting a few times, but seemed fine afterwards. After the throughal dip they still itched and scratched at their crusty and red skin like crazy. I decided to purchase the 'LYMDIP' that I read about and was recommended by my vet (15 dollars). You can find it online for cheaper and might be under Lime dip. Also my vet will be giving them a set of 3 shots each called Ivermectin (15 dollars each). I asked my vet about the Hydrogen/peroxide home remedy and he said that it will help to relieve the skin and help with drying it out but lymdip and the shots are more effective.
Just wanted to give some other options for everyone looking for the answer to this problem.
Another note: I ended up catching the mites (notoedric mange) from our kittens, but humans are not good hosts for them and they died within 3 days. The mites leave what looks exactly like mosquito bites. Sometimes with a small white head in the middle of the red bite.

I think my dog has the mange , as I was reading some of the Home Remedies and noticed that most of them suggest kitchen and medicine cabinet Items I had an Idea. Since most of them use soaps, oils , peroxide & flea and tick meds I decided to try my own. I went to the medicine cabinet and found Anti-fungal cream , Astringent, peroxide, sunscreen , hand sanitizer ,mouth wash, hot oil treatment for hair then dog products flea and tick shampoo , hot spot treatment , hot spot shampoo ,antibacterial medicated shampoo, ear mite drops, flea and tick drops then last vegetable oil from the kitchen, I mixed all of these ingredients together and lathered up my dog & left iton her for an hour as she was locked in the pen outside, after the hour I bathed her in regular dog shampoo and conditioner, after drying her off, I sprayed her with antiseptic spray for dogs. She is not scratching right now and hope this works. I will keep you posted as to my results!

My little dog had mange bad. I read about the borax hydrogen peroxide mix on your site and by golly, it worked in three weeks. I also sprayed him with AC vinegar. I can't find borax here in Granada, Nicaragua, so I husband my supply quite closely. The neighbors have a dog that plays with mine, and he had mange and was undernourished, so in sympathy, I fed him dry dog food with a little bacon grease and /or oil from fried chicken. His mange cleared up completely. It must have been a faulty immune system due to a poor diet. My little mutt thanks you for the help.

I have used sump oil dirty old sump oil and it has a great measure of success It did not cure but it removed the mites long enough for the hair to regrow so Now i will be trying the peroxide mix to kill and the sump oil to contain as its cheap and easy just rub in all over and leave (I suppose not good for indoor animals)
