Ok. This is the true hiccough cure. It works every time. Instead of holding your breath, take a deep breath then exhale through your mouth slowly. As if you were whistling. Then, keep blowing air out until your lungs are completely empty. Breath in slowly, and they should be gone!

To get rid of those pesky hiccoughs, all you need to do is bend over towards the floor and take four to five swallows of water from the opposite side of a cup or better still a coffee mug. All that is needed is a little bit of coordination, and you will have a very simple yet efficient solution.

Alright....hiccoughs are caused by spasms of your diaphragm. To get rid of your hiccoughs, you have to stop your diaphragm from spasming. In order to do this you must fill your lungs with as much air as possible, and hold your breath, while squeezing your lungs against your diaphragm. This will stop the spasms, thus getting rid of your hiccoughs. Simple as that.

Hiccough's are caused from your stomach contracting. Lay down or lean back and relax your entire body. The sooner you relax the sooner your hiccoughs will go away.

The perfect cure!!!!!!

As soon as you hiccough, make yourself burp! This really works! Hiccoughs are the result of trapped air in the lungs....what better way to relieve this pain then by removing the air immediately by burping? Even if you're in public, as soon as you hiccough....make yourself BURP! It really does work!!

swallow a teaspoon of coarse sugar without any water. The roughness of the sugar will disturb the muscular spasm in the throat and stop the hiccup. This works for me every time. Perhaps swallowing anything coarse would do the trick, but sugar will melt away, leaving no solids in the throat.

Does anyone here see the 2 common threads? Either swallow or hold your breath. I don't think touching your head or dinking udside down even sounds right. Further more, regardless of what you drink, what you drink it through or what you put in it, it is the mere fact that you are SWALLOWING that gets rid of them. What does bking soda do? And if you try to drink through paper, I would imagine you would end up with a mouth full disgusting slosh!

Teaspoon of peanut butter, and it's much easier to swallow than sugar. Almost always works but don't do if you're allergic to peanuts. Instead, try filling a small glass and add 2 toothpicks and slowly drink, avoiding the toothpicks. Both have worked very well.

I was taught the best way to rid yourself of this was to take a breath and hold it for 10 seconds, then without releasing that breath take in more and hold for another 10 seconds, let about half out, and hold for 5-10 more. If you have a hiccough while doing it, it won't work but if you don't, you'll be rid of them.

Stand up straight and take a deep breath while looking straight up at the sky. Keep your eyes closed and hold that breath for 20 seconds. Then breathe. For some it works, and for others it does nothing, but it's worth a try!

Eat bananas. If hiccoughs are caught early (while not very deep in the diaphragm), one banana may do the job. Otherwise, you will need more. Always have plenty on hand.

Steps:
1. Swallow 1 tsp. white table sugar, dry. A study found that this stopped hiccups immediately in 19 out of 20 people.

2. Gulp down a glass of water if the sugar doesn't work.

3. Eat a piece of dry bread slowly.

An older nurse taught me this hiccough relief method 40 years ago and as a nurse myself for the past 40 years I have never had this method fail. Hiccoughs will often return because there are medical reasons that people have hiccoughs, but this method does give immediate relief. I call it Roman's Remedy.
When a person is hiccoughing have them drink water through a straw while holding pressue with their fingers on the middle portion of both ears. Fingers should be placed on the face and pressed firmly inward on the protion of the ear that protrudes directly from the face into the middle of the ear.

A nurse taught me to use the accupressure point between the thumb and index finger to stop the spasms that cause hiccups. You have to put pressure on the nerve--you will feel a definite twinge when you hit it. (Aim back toward the hand itself, not just the loose skin area.) Once you've hit the nerve, just hold for about ten seconds.

Your esophagus (the tube running from your throat to your stomach) has pockets and is coated in a thick mucous membrane. When air gets trapped in these pockets, mucous forms over it. In your body's attempt to rid yourself of the trapped air, your esophagus contracts causing the hiccups. Drinking a glass of water while holding your breath stops the hiccups since your esophagus contracting on its own while it is trying to send the water down. In doing so, your esophagus' contractions releases the air bubbles which either end up in your stomach or comes up as a burp.

To rid yourself of 'hiccups', drink any beverage upside-down, but I find water works best.
You put your lips tightly around the 'wrong' side of the glass (which is actually just further away than where you would normally put your mouth to drink out of a glass. Your chin will be inside the top of the glass..) OR a bottled water works even easier...then bend over with the glass or bottled water still tightly clamped at your mouth and drink or suck in the water as best as you can till you get the hang of it..You usually can't gulp a lot at once, but even a few drinks at a time will do it. If it doesn't work the first try, do it for up to three times and if it's going to work for you, it will have worked by then. This is not for everyone but it's worked for me for over 20 years.

You will need one small glass of water.

1. Sit in a chair.
2. Take a few sips of water and swallow.
3. Hold an average size amount of water in your mouth and do not yet swallow. Lean over so your head is between your legs and then swallow.
4. Stay there for a few seconds before sitting up again.

This has worked for me guaranteed every time.

If there is some way this doesn't work, just repeat, hold, and swallow a larger amount of water in your mouth while you are leaned over.

I read this in the Merck Manual for Nursing! Hiccups are 'fed' by oxygen, so it's important to hold your breath. I've found it most effective to breathe out immediately after a hic, then hold it as long as possible.

On the other hand, as someone already mentioned, relaxation works great, too. I think I prefer relaxation, and taking long, slow, even breaths while laying down.

Both methods have worked for me.

When you have hiccups (which I *HATE*!), hold an empty glass or cup to one of your ears. Position it so that it makes the best seal you can get. Then, drink a whole bunch of water while keeping the glass on your ear. You may notice that your ear will make a slight 'crack', 'pop', etc. as you swallow. I think it has something to do with pressure or creating a 'vacuum' or something. It's not painful or dangerous to do. You LOOK like a *total dork* but...it works very well! :D

To magically rid yourself of hiccups. Place a butter knife in a regular 8 oz cup. Fill cup with 5-6 oz. of water. place the end of the butter knife that sticks ot of the cup on forehead and drink all the water. This positions your head and throat. Voila! Hiccups are gone. I am a medic in the US Army and this is the only sure-fire method I use to treats my soldiers of annoying hiccups.

Okay... My mom always had us take a pencil and place it as far back as possible in your mouth (comparable to bitting a horse) and bite down on it. Then, drink a glass of water. Try to get the whole thing down without choking. It really works. So does the one about swallowing air from the opposite side of the glass.
