I also use a clove of garlic occasionally. However, I used to have really soft fragile nails and I discovered that if I use a little bit of olive oil after I do the dishes, clean, etc, it really strengthens the nails. I just keep a little container of olive oil in my kitchen with a cotton ball in it. After getting my hands wet, I rub the cotton ball on my nails and knuckles (because they tend to get really dry as well) and rub it all in while i rest for a bit.
