Gramma Mary's Ear Ache Remedy

For ear aches, ear infections, even an infection of the inner ear that is un-responsive to antibiotics. I'm the youngest of eleven children and I had ear aches as a child and this always worked for me.

My mom would bake a medium sized onion(with outer peeling removed) in the oven @ 350 for about an hour or until it would prick easily with a fork.(I cannot vouch for microwave). Remove the onion, place it at the bottom of a canning jar, wrap the jar in a towel so as not to burn your hand, prick the onion to release the steam. Place the affected ear over the opening to allow the steam of the onion to sooth and penetrate the ear. You can use a smaller onion and a smaller jar for a small child, the opening will be better for their little ears) Leave it in that position until the steam is no longer being released, the heat alone feels wonderful. It almost immediately eases the pain.

I know of a child scheduled for tubes to be surgically placed in her inner ear for drainage due to repeated infections that were un-responsive to antibiotics, who responded to this treatment the night before the planned surgery. When the doctor checked her ear the infection was completely resolved and the surgery was cancelled. The childs mother wanted to know if she could pay my mom, just knowing a child was no longer suffering was more than enough payment. We know now that onions have a natural antibiotic property and the heat may also help to improve circulation. It won't hurt to try, and it just may help. So what have you got to lose, onions are cheap!
Happy Healing!
Make it a Great Day for yourselves!!

take a clean long sock, most likely a mens sock, put about a cup of rice in the sock and heat it in the microwave for about a min. then put it on the ear that is hurting and take some pain med. not only does this take away the pressure causing the pain but if you do this often enough it will drain the build up in your ear

Swimmer's Ear:

It is important to know what is causing an ear ache, as different causes should be treated differently.

Swimmer's Ear is a fungal infection, and almost any type of fungus is quickly and effectively treated with vinegar.

The Remedy:

Mix white vinegar 50/50 with clean water. Drop into ear, and wiggle ear to ensure it goes all the way in.

This provides almost instant results, especially if the infection is caught early. My son woke with Swimmer's Ear one night, and after a quick vinegar treatment and about fifteen minutes for the pain to subside somewhat, went back to sleep and by morning his ear was completely well.

You may mix vinegar with rubbing alcohol instead of water, but the alcohol will sting and is not necessary. The vinegar does a fine job of creating a pH environment that is completely unfriendly to fungus, and the little bit of extra water will run out and not cause further problems as long as you dry your ear carefully.

Side note: Vinegar of various sorts and in various concentrations is wonderful for other fungal infections as well. I rub it on my scalp for dandruff, for instant results. I pour apple cider vinegar in the bath for vaginal yeast infections, for instant relief and quick recovery. For fungus, vinegar works better and faster than any store-bought or prescription remedy. But only for fungus--for bacterial infections, vinegar can actually make the problem worse. So be sure you know what you're dealing with!

For bad ear aches/infections squeeze lemon juice in your ear, keep it in for a few seconds, then let it drain out. I put a towel over my ear so it doesn't drain into my hair...that gets pretty sticky! The lemon has to do with changing the Ph levels in your ear. The bacteria is a base, and if you add the lemon, an acid, it neutralizes the Ph levels in your ear so that the bacteria cannot live in there!

White Vinegar!! It is about 3 am and I could not sleep due to inner ear itching and pain from my ear infection. I noticed that when I get a sore throat, it is always followed by an ear infection. I used my usual, cotton swab soaked in alcohol and that provides temporary relief but today the pain and itching returned. I read this site and found to use a mixture 50/50 of alcohol and white vinegar. I am not one to 'mix' things so I got up the nerve to try the vinegar alone since I used alcohol earlier to no avail. My right ear is not as bad as the left one, so I tried that one first. I placed 3 drops of white vinegar... undiluted in my ear and left it there for 3 minutes. While it was in there, I noticed that when I swallowed the fluid moved down further in my ear canal so I continued to make swallowing motions. I let that drain out and tried the left ear. This ear hurt and itch really bad, but I put 3 drops of fluid in it and it did not burn... I could feel it moving down in the canal as I continued the swallowing motions. I let that drain out and 'immediately' felt better. I notice that the pain... itching sensation is gone. Since that worked for my ears, I got up the nerve to gargle with white vineger... undiluted! Once you get past the taste, it worked! I had to swallow about a teaspoon so that It could get all the way down my throat. I feel much better and is headed for bed. This definitely worked for me!

I have eczema in my ears. No where else on my body, although I do have dry skin. I also have chronic eye dryness, which I wonder if it's all related, but that's another topic I'm sure. Anyway, after a particularly nasty secondary ear infection recently I was bound and determined to find something that healed my ears of the constant pain, burning, itching, and crusty weeping. I've been dealing with it for the past 10 years, and I thought I had to live with it. Pain is a funny motivator. My ear was swollen shut and the lymph nodes from under the ear down my neck to my shoulders were all swollen. The doctor prescribed antibiotics and oral steroids and a steroid creme. The oral steroids were magic. It took away the swelling, the pain and the itching! But quite soon after the last dose the itching returned as well as the crusty weeping. I knew the steroid creme would only be a short term maintenance solution. (I haven't even filled the scrip.) I want my ears to be healthy! Not just maintain the condition. I found an oil called miracell. See Miracell.com. I had a sample sitting in my bathroom for months, didn't know what it was!! I put it on my leg to try it out and immediately knew it was quality. I got online looking for more and kicked myself when I learned I could have put it in my ears! I got more and I've been putting it in my ears now for the past few days, 2 or 3 times a day. I'm in love. It's a combo of oils and contains myrrh which is an antibacterial. I highly recommend this stuff! They have an oil called Calm Ear. I compared the ingredients to their main oil, Skin Relief & Support. Its the same exact stuff, only the FDA requires they put a paraben in the Calm Ear, the other oil is paraben free. The Calm Ear is hard to track down, they ended up sending me samples of the Calm Ear, and I just bought the main oil at my local health food store, its the same stuff.
My ear infection was severe and I'm glad I went to the doc for that. I don't know if it's a remedy for an ear infection, but for the eczema it is absolutely helping and I hope that it will indeed help my skin help itself to return to complete health. I am also cutting out dairy and sugar in hopes to eliminate the root cause. Good luck to you.

First i will give you my remedy then my story!

You take......
4 BIG Tablespoons of garlic
some water
some olive oil enough to fully cover the bottom of a sauce pan
chop up some onion
let it simmer (stir occasionally) until the garlic looks chunky and dry then strain the juice into a bowl or cup and use an eye dropper or siringe and put it into your ear hold your head sideways for about 5-10 min.

My story......
this is the first ear ache i have had in my 21 years of life and it was AWEFUL.... the worst part is i have no insurance i got online and found this web site while i was searching everyone kept saying how the onion was good for this, garlic good for this, sweet oil (olive oil) soothed but, no one conbined those things so i tried it and it works FANTASTIC i will swear by it from now on!i am not a believer in the whole herbs thing but, this has definately changed my mind and i truely hope and know it will work for you or whom ever! i hope it works and you/they get better!

I got a really bad ear ache/infection and I don't have insurance, but fortunately I have a 2 month old that I am breastfeeding, so I expressed some breast milk and used a dropper to fill my ear canal with it. I let it sit for 5 minutes and when I sat up and let it drain the pain was GONE! It was so plugged up I couldn't hear, and after this I was back to normal. I will try the other remedies once I'm no longer breastfeeding though.

PLEASE do NOT use vinegar for ear infections. I tried it on my 14 month old baby and he screamed non-stop for about 30 minutes. He was literally shaking with pain as he held his hand to his ear. He only stopped crying when we put some prescribed numbing drops in his ear to ease the pain. The only thing that has worked on him is antibiotics and tubes. I really want parents to know that you will willfully inflict pain on your baby if you try this and it is the worst experience to be the cause of pain to your baby. I listened to these blogs and I hope to prevent another parent from doing the same thing. Go to the doctor.

I've been having problems with the ear drops my doctor prescribed not working. I talked to my grandmother and she told me that when she was a kid, before there were antibiotic pharmasuticals, they would use peppermint oil for ear aches/infection.
I mixed 1 drop of peppermint oil to 20 drops of olive oil and used 4 drops in the infected ear. My pain was gone almost instantly and I felt 75% better than I had since I developed the ear infection. Reading in some differnt herbals I found that Peppermint oil has antibiotic and anti-inflamitory properties and it's a local anastetic as well.

I warmed up a little vinegar in the microwave, dropped some in his ear and about 5 mins later he's not crying anymore! Thanks guys!

Ear aches and ear pain are generally caused by inflammation/fluid in the middle ear that does not drain (blocked eustachian tubes) that presses on the ear drum. Bacteria breed/grow in the fluid. Colloidal Silver dropped directly into the ear reduces swelling & relives pain within 1 hour (continue drops AM & PM for 5 days)- spraying colloidal silver(its a natural antibiotic) into the nasal passage will help drainage & kill bacteria-I add colloidal silver to Ocean brand(saline solution nasal spray) half c. silver & half ocean. Ear aches most often follow a cold or sinus infection & kids that have allergy problems are more prone to ear infections- Fresh garlic pureed in warm olive oil is also great because garlic is a natural antiseptic.

Ear aches are sometimes water trapped in the eustachian tube. I have found that using a blow dryer about 12 inches away from the head and on medium heat will calm the crying child.

To cure an ear infection and pain of ear infection both for anyone of all ages, even infants, use garlic oil. Just break open a capsule and pour it in your ear. Lay down on the opposite side for a few minutess so it can drain in good. About 20 minutes later the pain should be gone and the ear will not bother you again, but it is good to do a second time after a few days just to be sure.

I had a terrible ear infection in my inner ear(swimmers ear). I used garlic capsules, break them open and sqeeze out the gel inside into a very small container, then mix it with either olive oil or an over the counter ear ache reliever mix until thin then pour all of it into infected ear,let it sit in ear for about 5 min. then drain, may take a day or two but it will feel so much better.

Alright. I'm a fourteen year old girl at my beach house, where there's a skanky ol' pool that we can't resist swimming in, and the Atlantic ocean just a few steps away. I didn't feel like dragging someone out to the store to get some rubbing alcohol or whatever for me since there were none in this rental.

So... Duh. I got an ear infection.
Anyhow, anyone wonder why many of these remedies include rubbing alcohol and vinegar? Well, I just went to the doctor to get some real antibiotics for it and found out. First off: Yeah. This is what I recommend. Go to a doctor. But if not mix a solution of half rubbing alcohol and half vinegar and put a few drops periodically in your ear until the infection goes away. Obviously, the rubbing alcohol -being a depressant- kills germs. We all knew that. BUT what I bet some of us didn't know -Myself included- is that there is an acidic layer in our ear canal that prevents germs from bothering the eardrum. However, after someone does a lot of swimming this layer gets worn down and washed away. And their are still many species of germs that can survive the chlorine or salt in a swimming pool; so although obviously in a cleaner chlorinated pool you are less likely to get an infection than in a skanky one or in an ocean or lake. Although any amount of swimming still wears down the acidic layer in one's ear.

ANYHOW: Back on topic, the vinegar in itslef is a minor acid, so putting that in your ear helps restore the layer. The rubbing alcohol kills germs, although it may sting a bit. Mix these two together 1:1 and put a few drops in your ear each day. These will likely not immediately help the pain (For that, I recommend some of these steam or hot water things some people have said. Although the will not help the infection. And some sort of pain over the counter drug; Aleve, Advil, ect.)And Er.... Try and keep your head above water for the next week. Even swim team coaches make their members do something like this periodically to keep infection and swimmer's ear away. I really hope this helps, and tell me what you think!

Here is a list of multiple options, and can all probably be used simultaneously;)
Pharmaceutical antibiotics are overrated bigtime!
Natural Antibiotics!:
Olive leaf extract should help with infections, colds, ear aches, etc. Add 5-10 drops of warm tea tree oil to 1 Tbsp. of olive oil, mix thoroughly and trickle a small amount into the ear as needed.
Colloidal silver, B & C vitamins will help too... try it and let me know how these worked for you please.. Thankyou

I had a very bad ear ache yesterday. I was swimming the day before,so I believe it was the occasional swimmer's ear. Although, this remedy will work for any type of ear ache. First, get some regular cooking oil and pour about a teaspoon size amount into a small teacup. Next, heat the oil, just a little bit so it gets warm. Once the oil is heated (warm *not hot* ),get a SMALL knife and dip it into the oil. (This is used so the oil runs down the knife onto the knife's point to make a perfect droplet). Dip the knife into the oil and hold the knife over your ear so the oil drips into the ear canal. Do this repeatedly until the ear canal is full. Get a cotton ball and cover the area filled with oil. After you do this, you can put your head back in up right position. When you go to bed, make sure you sleep on the side opposite of the aching ear. I recommend doing this a little while before going to sleep. Once you do this, you will feel instant relief in 5-10 minutes!! This really does work!! I did this last night before going to sleep. And by the morning(today),the pain was gone!! *This is a two person job. Get your mom, or another adult to do this process for you. Because your head will need to be tilted all the way on its side for the oil to go into the ear canal. And you won't be able to look into a mirror when doing this.* My mom did the whole process for me. I got this remedy from her. And I thought I would share it with you so your pain goes away as fast as mine did!! I really recommend trying this, you won't regret it!! Hope this helps a lot of people.

I am sick and woke up with an ear infection. Horrible. I took some ibuprofen and my father told me my Grandmother used olive oil when they had ear infections as kids. You heat the olive oil, dip a cotton ball in and put it in your ear. Needless to say, I was back to a painfree sleep. It helps to relief the pressure and pain. An ear infection will take a few days to get over so just repeat.

Alot of people are saying 'oh, just go to the doctor and get anti-biotics...' This is NOT always a good idea. Some infections are mild and can be treated at home until thet clear up on their own. If you take an anti-biotic for every little infection, your body will not be able to build antibodies to fight them on it's own. Vinegar, peroxide, alcohol, warm olive oil, etc... ALL very good suggestions. Also, add a little thyme oil (JUST A DROP!!!) to about 2 oz of warm olive oil and add a couple drops in your ear twice a day. Thyme has natural infection fighting properties. :)

ok now i am 17 my ear drum busted and my tubes fell out so i am prone to infection so i always get these. go get a heat wrap of some sort heat it up to where it is almost hot. grab a towel to wrap around it and rest your infected ear on it. the heat moves and breaks up the infection. now you can hear the infection breaking up and pus or goo should come out on to the towel. just lay there for about an hour or two and it will get better. if you need to go reheat the heat wrap. i do this all the time and i can garentee you it will work for infections

Im 14 years old and had a mild case of swimmers ear. I later that day went to a rock concert thinking that it might have just been stress related. This morning (the next day) i woke up with a huge ear ache! I couldnt even hear out of my left ear! I tried vineger and it helped for a while but wasn't as long as i would like. I tried Hydrogen Peroxide and that cleaned the infection but it still hurt like crazy. then i tried the steam thing i read and instant relief of pain!!!! it may still be clogged but it helped with the pain. First take a glass or a mug and fill the bottum about an inch or so with warm water than damp a washcloth with warm water and push it down into the glass. put in the microwave for 30 seconds and hold to ear as long as desiered. after you feel fine or the steam gets to hot or too much presure remove it from your ear and repeat later. it helped so much!!!!!

Woke up this morning with a terrible earache and by 12:30 this afternoon couldn't take it anymore. Decided to go on the net and find a quick homeopathic remedy. Decided to go with the garlic and olive oil remedy. Got two garlic cloves and put them in the garlic press. Got the smallest measuring cup and mixed the crushed garlic in with about 4tablespoons of olive oil. Put it in the microwave for about 45 seconds, just to get it bubbling. Put a couple of drops of the warm oil in my ear and in about 30minutes the pain was gone. Not only in my ear, the right side of my throat and sinus. Garlic really is a miracle plant.

After getting over a pretty bad cold I returned to work only to slowly feel my ear throb and seemingly swell shut. I went to my doctor, who confirmed this was an ear infection. My doctor gave me Anti-biotics but did nothing for what had evolved into a ridiculous amount of pain. Once home I got on the web and tried every home remedy i could find, Hydrogen peroxide, ear candles, garlic and olive oil, everything to stop the pain. In the end the only thing that worked, and worked tremendously well was a hot rag to my ear for over a half hour. If you are reading these and just want the pain to stop, get a hot wet rag ( i nuked mine in the microwave for 10 sec over and over) and put it to your ear and keep it there for AT LEAST half an hour. Good luck!

Vinegar has always been tried and true for ear problems, but you definitely shouldn't put it in undiluted. Use 2 parts saline water to each part vinegar. And if you live near the ocean, substitute ocean water for saline water.

Then dab onto a q-tip/cottonswab and apply gently. For babies and kids use an ear bulb to pour a few drops in. Hold the head tilted for a minute, then tip out.

My husband has suffered a bad ear ache, 1st in one ear, then in the other. An excessive amount of yellow puss-like secretion was evident. We tried a bit of hydrogen peroxide in each 1st, which bubbled profusely, but ultimately didn't cure the issue. Finally he hit upon using 'Flowers of Sulfur', (aka Sublimed Sulfur for Compounding, available by special order Walgreen's pharmacy, coast to coast.) He simply mixed a wee bit of this powder with some olive oil and put it in the ear with a swab. Immediate, and profound relief occured. Note: this sulfur burns like the dickens if you accidentally get it in the eyes...flush well w/ water, it will pass.

Simply soaking a towel with hot water and holding it to your ear will help with most ear pain. Heat helps reduce the pain dramatically. You'll notice almost immediately the pain is reduced and will be going back to re-heat that washcloth or towel several times. Even a hot shower or a hot bath will suffice, but getting some hot steam into your ear will make a considerable difference.

Ok so I've had ear infections for as long as I can remember. Maybe once or twice a year. Well I came across someone whole helped!
** Best to do in shower!!!!!**
So pretty much take a cotton ball soak in hydrogen peroxide, then tilt your head to the side and ring cotton ball into affected ear, you will hear a lot of fizzing/ popping ect. Totally normal then you will take a syringe of warm not cold not hot water and gently rinse the ear with water. Repeat till you don't hear any fizzing. As for the pain take ibuprofen!

I am 25 and i have a condition known as surfers ear. Because of this condition i get reoccurring ear infections all the time. Treatment costs and doctors fees add up quick, so over the last year i have researched natural remedies.
This is what i have come up with with great success.

Take large doses of vitamin A, C , Zinc as soon as possible.
Eat lots of garlic and onion.
take garlic oil capsules and use the capsules as ear-drops putting 2 to 3 drops in the affected ear once or twice a day(it will stink).

Now for the magic treatment, Aloa vera.
Eat aloa vera, that's right eat it.
make sure not to eat the green skin or the yellow sap. Fillet it like a fish and only get the clear gel. It tastes vile so here is what i do to mask the taste.

add it to choc milkshake or banana smoothie add a little bit of brown sugar to sweeten the taste a bit. Eat as much as you can stomach, It works wonders.
I had very bad infection and the above treatment cleared it up in 2 days.

THIS IS FOR ADULTS, i don't recommend this for children as i don't know the dosage for children.

DON'T EVER USE ESSENTIAL OILS IN YOUR EAR.
NEVER PUT ANYTHING IN YOUR EAR IF YOUR EAR DRUM IS PUNCTURED.

My son had a pretty bad ear infection that developed, it seems, over night. He was crying and kept waking up screaming. My husband had gotten some over the counter earache drops from the drugstore, but that did not seem to be doing the job good enough.

After reading some posts and ideas, I did a few things. scraped/finely chopped and boiled an onion with 50% water/50% vinegar until the onion was see through. Then I separated the liquid from the onion. I placed the warm (not hot) onion on his ear (not in) then, when the liquid has cooled to warm, i filled his ear canal. I let it sit for about 2 minutes, had him dump it out, then put 2 small drops and put a cotton ball so it would not drip out. he was tear free within the 2 minute time. I do this 3 times a day with obvious infection and 1 time a day for a week after just to make sure it does not return. After the first 24 hours, you can use a weak peroxide mix (dilute with water) to break up any hardened puss. anything in there will be forced to float to the top.

Hydrogen Per. eases the pain. I had an ear infection I could not shake for 5 days, no medical insurance. I work in a pet store and was given a sample of VETERYCIN (this stuff is supposed to heal just about everything, so I thought why not)... sprayed it in my ear 3 times through out the day and had felt like I was under water. Sprayed it another 3 times in the evening and then laid on a heating pad when I got home for for a few hours. Pain and pressure is gone. Good luck!

I used the white vinegar in my son ear it worked in less than 5 minutes. He was crying in pain and I had tried ear drops and rubbing alcohol over a matter of an hour and they did nothing and after four drop of vinigar and pulling his ear a little bit so the drops could run down his ear canal he said the pain was gone in less then 5 minutes. This was great he is now asleep, I will take him to the doctor in the morning but at least he was able to go to sleep. My son is 11 years old.

First MY STORY:

I'm half deaf in my left ear, so I get ear infections rather easily in that ear. I use to buy the over the counter homeopathic ear drops until that no longer worked. I just recently got an ear infection that I can only describe the pain as being that of an ice pick going strait through my left ear drum at every movement. So I read up on this site about home remedy's and as much to my disappointment noting really worked, that is until I combined a few ingredients myself and not only did it work but I have not had an ear ache/ infection since.

NOW THE SOLUTION:

First grate some garlic and onion, (QUANTITY IS NOT IMPORTANT) real fine so it looks like food puree into a sauce pan. Then add a small amount of pure olive oil to the mix, simmer on low heat for just a moment or two. Then take a lemon and squeeze some of its juice into the mix, stirring it together. With a cheese cloth or some other fine linen around the house pour the continence onto it and extract the liquid. Then for faster results make sure the liquid is slightly warm (TEST ON FINGER FIRST) before inserting a few drops into the affected ear(s). Let the liquid penetrate the ear for about 3 minutes before putting a piece of cotton ball in. If you like I use a piece of tape to hold the cotton ball in place i.e like when you are going to bed for the night. This makes sure the medicine is doing what it's suppose to all night, and you won't have to worry about your bed smelling like the secret concoction. ;) The liquid may or may not have a slight sting to it, i guess it all depends on how bad the infection is. For me it did however, and grew slightly warm but only for a few minutes, then the pain was gone. But I can say it pain was so minimal to the torture of the infection before the (POTION) as I like to call it. Repeat as needed or at least until 1-2 days after you think it is better to insure it does not come back, and there you have it, easy as pie.

This will help discomfort, but be warned, it WILL hurt for a minute or two.

Apple cider vinegar in a mug, heat it up for 30 seconds, then pour some very carefully on your ear.

It will hurt and leave your ear burning for few minutes, but then you'll feel much better than you were at first.

It sounds crazy but I just did it and it worked.

Ok, I know once you read it-you will think EW GROSS! I did too when I was younger, but after I realized it worked I was SOLD!
Human urine-caught mid-stream will ease the pain/cure an ear ache. This is a home rememdy that my mother's grandmother used on her and her siblings when they had earaches.
You catch your own or for an infant/toddler who's not potty trained use the parents urine caught in a disposable container (an old medicine cup works great!) and with a cut straw or disposable dropper put a few drops of the warm urine into the ear that hurts. The warmth soothes the pain and the ammonia in the urine kills the infection causing bacteria that is causing the pain.
It sounds gross but it works! Old country wives tales still work people!

I had persistent outer ear irritation with a little pus formation. The ear drops prescribed me by my family doctor (called a GP here in the UK)gradually became less effective as the years went by. The doctor said this was due to increased resistance developing in the infectious agent (bacteria, I assume. I decided to change the environment in the ear canal by dropping lemon juice into my ear. This would create an acidic environment that would make life hard for the bacteria. My ear was inflamed and stung quite badly for a while. My ear infection cleared up for about 2 months and then returned. This time I treated the ear with a solution of sea salt in boiled water. My logic was that the bacteria that had survived the acid attack would find it hard to defeat the alkali attack - I have heard that sea water can clear up some skin infections. I now drop a few drops of boiled sea-salty water into my ear every week and things are OK. My doctor, by the way, had suggested drops of olive oil into the ear - I never tried that!

So my method was to combine methods already described elsewhere on the site.

Oh my geeze!!! Ok, so I have been sick for 2 weeks now, just thought I had a cold until I went to the doc and he said I had a little pnemonia, well up until then I had no ear pain or stopped up issues, he looked in my ear with that stupid light thing and BAM the next day... ear infection!! And I do not tolerate them very well at all. The last 2 I had put me in the hospital because the infection got so bad and the pain was worse than any I have even felt!! So this time when it came on I wanted to find some way to relieve it before it got to that point... So I came upon this site and I have to say THANKS to whomever posted about putting a wet washcloth in a mug and microwaving it (I used hot water to wet the cloth and put a little in the mug and microwaved for 30 sec, and after the heat was gone I repeated the process before letting it drain), then hold it to your ear and let the steam in the ear, then after a few minutes I took away the cup and let my ear drain... HOLY COW!! It feels soooo much better. I read lots of other things that sound like good ideas, but I do not put things in my ear, I just cant do it, the thought of having to relive that pain from the monster ear infections gets me and I will not take that chance, I know there are many who can relate or just do like to put things in their body like that, so here is one that works!!! Good luck to all!!

Take a hot paper towel and hold it up to your ear for about 20-40 minutes. My school nurse has these ear ease things and its exactly that and it works within 20-40 minutes!!! I sooo reccomend this. I have had bouts of ear congestion for years and have suffered through too many middel ear infections. I found a product on line called the Ear Ease ear pain reliever. It is a special container that holds hot water and is designed to go around the ear. You hold it on for about 5 minutes or so and the heat relieves the pressure and dramatically reduces the pain. The Doctor told me that I have small eustachian tubes and that is why I have had these reurring problems in opening up my ears. I feel a constant pressure in my ear that at times can be unbelievably painful. The Ear Ease has been a life saver for me particularly when I have to fly for business and I am boarding a plane w/ a head cold or sinus infection. If you don't want to take medication or risk a nasty ear infection that lasts for weeks, check the ear ease out.

Two days ago I had an ear infection, growing quickly. My ear canal hurt badly, I had a sore throat, and my head was so tender I couldn't touch it and it was shooting with pain. That night, I took echinacea tincture and ate two cloves of raw garlic, and got a good night's sleep. By morning I was about 80% better. I repeated the echinacea and garlic and by last night was back to normal. I also take a lot of probiotics in my diet (yogurt and kefir, which I make at home), so I'm sure that helped me weather the infection when it came. Luckily no need for a doctor! I read that one clove of raw garlic has 1/5 the antibiotics of a dose of penecillin. I ate it wrapped in a piece of bread to help with the taste and stinging on my sore throat. Echinacea tincture I took 30 drops every 4 hours or so. Hope this helps!

Anywho, I have been sick for three weeks with bronchitis and it's almost gone except it went into one of those sore throats you can't eat or drink it hurts so bad and a incredibly painful earache. I read the vinegar solution and because I drink braggs organic with the mother in it, apple cider vinegar before meals, I had it on hand and placed some in my ear as I laid on my side for about 20 min. When I got up I'd say it was about 65% better and I was happy for that...Then about an hr later I noticed it's almost completely gone! =)

My mother is an Audiologist (ear specialist) and I have a degree in health. BE VERY CAREFUL PUTTING ANYTHING IN YOUR EAR! Many of these 'remedies' call for putting vinegar, alcohol, or peroxide in your ear which is VERY DANGEROUS. An easy and fast way to relieve ear pain is to heat up a washcloth in hot water or a heating pad and lay down with the affected ear on it. Do this for at least 30 minutes (heating up the washcloth as needed). Take ibuprofin- this will reduce the swelling in your ear. Make sure you see a doctor to make sure it's an infection, in which case you will need antibiotics. If your ear is especially painful SAY SO and make sure you ASK for numbing ear drops if you want them. They can make quite a difference in terms of pain. Also, something easy that will relieve pressure is to use Afrin (a nasal spray). Lay on your back with your head hanging off the side of the bed. Turn your head toward the side of the affected ear. Then use the Afrin but NOT AS A SPRAY. Turn it upside down and let 4 drops drip into your nose. Leave your head over the side of the bead turned toward the ear ache for about a minute. You will feel it go through your nose and toward your ear. This should provide some relief from pressure very quickly. Again, make sure you see a doctor if the pain persists.

PLEASE DO NOT USE HEAT AS A TREATMENT FOR EAR INFECTIONS.
Heat can dilate the vessels, allowing white blood cells faster access to the infected area, but heat allows the infection to multiply!

The remedy should depend on the pain. Vodka in my ear worked for an acute infection.
Vinegar/rubbing alcohol are good preventative measures.
Do not take baths, take showers. The water/bacteria gets trapped in the ear easily if you take baths or swim a lot.

Hydrogen peroxide helps with very acute infections.

Guys, if you have the insurance and/or money to see a doctor, USE IT. Your hearing is valuable and a great sense you are gifted with. 3 days ago, after swimming in an abandoned lake (smart, I know.) I woke up the next day with a shooting pain in one ear so bad that my jaw was numb and I couldn't see straight. Of course, me being 15 and stupid, I didn't tell my mother and I figured it was just some wax buildup. SO I DID SOMETHING ELSE NOTSOSMART- cleaned it with the Qtip. I was relieved a little temporarily, like a few seconds, but the pain came back HARD and worse. I used my dad's ear drops (another stupid move, thankyouuu Jackie) and the next day, the pain was less and better. I popped an aleve and went shopping. I went to sleep happy like I was some genius at taking care of myself, but when I woke up the pain was back. My friend had slept over and I didnt want to let her see me cry, so I sprinted downstairs in tears to my mom to tell her about it. Her being in Level 2 nursing, she had a little knowledge about the situation. But, uhohhh, my doctor wasnt in that day. That morning she gave me some of my Fathers ear drops, but this time the pain remained horrid.
Later, about 2 hours later I was driven to Urgent Care and waited 5 hours to see that my little earache was a massive ear infection. now, that was yesterday. The nurse gave me pills and MY OWN eardrops and I had INSTANT relief for the night and was happy. But, that was last night and this morning the pain felt just as severe. Its so bad, I woke up at 5:30 a.m. on my own and now Im waiting for my mom to wake up and her approval that I can take my medication again.
SO LONG SOTRY SHORT, your earaches could be severe. See a doctor. :)

I've had a cold for a few days and my right ear, along with the right side of my throat and neck has been SO sore that I wince every time I have to swallow. After reading some suggestions on this website, I tried a hot steamy wash cloth held up to my ear, and laid down for about 15 minutes but that brought no relief. So I poured a bit of white vinegar in my ear, waited about a minute, then let it drain. That didn't hurt, but it didn't do anything to help either. I tried using my blowdryer, which didn't do anything. I poured some hydrogen peroxide in my ear, but it didn't bubble, or make a sound. I almost gave up, but then I decided to take a garlic clove and cut out a bunch of the outer white part, (as the inner green part is where the healing properties are at,) and I sortof carved the garlic clove into the shape of an ear bud, (the kind you would use with an ipod) slipped it comfortably into my ear, and put some tape over top to hold it in.

Well FINALLY, it feels like SOMETHING is happening! There's crackling, popping, burning (so I wouldn't recommend this with kids) and at the same time, I am finally feeling some relief way inside my ear, and even in my throat. Whether this is going to cure it or not, I don't know. But I'm happy that it at least *feels* like it's working. And I can't smell it, so that's good too.

Garlic is amazing, isn't it?

Get a vibrating toothbrush, or some other such device (Eardoc, phone, etc...) and put it BEHIND your ear at about the level of your earlobes. Leave it there for a good few minutes. It wont cure your infection but it will really help deal with the pain. Hope it helps

Equal parts of 70% isopropyl and white vinegar

Let sit for a few minutes and then drain. There will be tingling/slight stinging in the ear passage as it kick-starts the bacteria in your ear and helps to remove the excess water.

Ok, so a lot of people post things about the steaming cloth after putting it into the microwave for 30 seconds. Worked, but didn't do the job. So then as I thought about it, WTF is everyone thinking. Did not one person really notice it. Guess not, so let me help you out more. Take the rag run it under hot water, get some hot water put it in the mug(make sure mug is tall microwave safe and had handle) only don't let the rag touch the water in the mug. Stuff it so it sits in there nice at the top. Microwave 30 secs. Here is where it gets new. Take the infected ear and put it in the mug(rag didn't touch water so you know there's room to fit your ear) the heat will make a suction that pulls the stuff out and drain and the steam will soften it up to come put nice. Take the rag and put it on other ear at the same time so both ears are getting steam. Feels awkward makes you look crazy when you do it, but the pain is gone and works great.

I've have tried rubbing Tea Tree Oil behind my ears on the soft skin next to the ear canal witch only turned the earglue into a more watery fluid and burned the skin on my ears than it peeled. The only thing the helps with relief is Wally's ear drops with Sweet Almond Oil, Eucalyptus Oil, Tea Tree Oil, Mullein Extract, Echinacea Oil, Garlic Oil. Also, putting Vick's salve in the middle of a cottonball then into your ear canal brings a soothing relief.

Vinegar IS used in the treatment of ear infections. The ear spray prescribed by doctors contains Acetic Acid (vinegar), its used alter the acidity of your ear making it inhospitable towards bacteria. Yes it does really sting so take pain killers before you do it but it will treat the infection.

You can get the same effect by using any heat source: hot water bottle wrapped in a towel, heating pad, put rice in a cotton sock-tie the end-microwave for up to 1 minute. The heat is what relieves the pain. Use something appropriate to the age of the child. This is a much better method than exposing your kids to tobacco smoke at that close of a range.

To help with ear pain caused by an infection, place a few drops of warm sweet oil or warm garlic oil into the affected ear. It will relieve the pain immediately.

My 10 year old has an ear infection. I am giving him ciprodex drops. The pain has been horrible. He was crying it was hurting so bad. I used my garlic press on a pod and squeezed it into a little measuring spoon. Next I poured some sweet oil over the garlic. I microwaved it for about 15 seconds which was too long, it was too hot, but this gave it a little time to let the oil from the garlic mix with the sweet oil. When it cooled a little, I poured just the oil into his ear being careful not to let any garlic slip through. He told me the warmth felt really good and the pain stopped immediately. I was amazed and happy that he finally got some relief.

After reading some of the remedies suggested on this site and others I gave my husband, who was experiencing a terrible ear infection, a dropper full of the hydrogen peroxide-then had him drain it, half a dropper full of collidal silver-then had him drain it out, and then a few drops of organic apple cider vinegar mixed with a couple drops of organic, cold-pressed olive oil. Healed him immediately and the pain has not returned.

I have a 18mo old son and he has an inner ear infection. Try this remedy, it worked for my son to relieve some of his discomfort. Heat a coffee mug's worth of water for 45 seconds, steep a green tea bag in it. Get a diaper (they are after all soft and absorbent) pour the tea into the diaper and then fold it up securing it with the velcro patches. Put 2 drops of Olive Oil into your child's infected ear (or both if it's a double). While the diaper is warm have your child lay the painful side down onto it. Do this for about 10 minutes if possible. CAUTION: Make sure it's Warm, not HOT!! Easiest part is you can just throw it away when you're done and there's no mess! Ibuprofin or Tylenol will help too, but in the meantime while you're waiting for it to kick in try this! Good Luck!!!

Best home remedy I've ever used for ear ache/ear infections is eardrops about 4 drops Tea tree oil in 1/4 cup water. Tea tree oil is a natural antibiotic, antiviral, and antifungal so its good for LOTS of other stuff too! But, when you use these drops, shortly after you put them in there's even a cooling type feel in your ear that is just so relaxing also!

My 3 year old son is just getting over a cold and today he developed an earache. I placed a tsp of extra virgin olive oil in a small dish, then placed that in a larger dish full of hot water up to the rim of the smaller dish. Let it sit for a few minutes until oil feels just above body temp. Use a baby medicine dropper or your (clean) fingertip to drop it in the ear and place a piece of cotton ball to hold the oil in. W/in 5 minutes he was jumping around, not crying anymore. I asked him if his ear felt better and he said, Yeah, all better Mom!

which you just basically open your mouth and move your jaw to the opposite side of the ear that hurts for 3 seconds or more. and repeat 3 - 5 times.

any way i thought i would share it

it actually helped take most of the pain away for my ear infection

Make garlic oil: chop 1-2 bulbs of fresh garlic. Place the garlic in a double boiler,or regular pan if you dont have one and cover with an inch of olive oil. Cover the pot, and warm the oil gently over low heat for one hour.

Strain the oil through a piece of cheesecloth, and store it in a covered glass jar in the refrigerator. To use the garlic oil, place a small amount in a metal spoon and heat it gently over a flame until warm.
Place a couple of drops into each ear canal, and plug the canal with a soft cotton ball. Repeat this every hour or as needed. Do not use garlic oil to treat an external ear infection or if you suspect a punctured eardrum

I burst my eardrum, which got infected. After a few months I attacked it with a Qtip. My warning to you is Never Ever stick a Qtip in your ear. Your ear is a self cleaning organ. The end of the Qtip came off in my ear. The fluid build up carried it down my ear and it's now embedded around the eardrum. Antibiotics aren't helping. Doctor can't get it out. Don't put yourself in my position for any reason. It's the most miserable thing you can have happen.

Tried the vinegar 100%, tried hydrogen peroxide 100%, but I was still experiencing ridiculous pain from my ear infection. The pain was just overwhelming. I went to my chiropractor appointment and he recommended tea tree oil.

I hit the natural foods store, picked up 'Wally's Ear Oil' containing tea tree oil, garlic oil, etc. and three drops later I was blissfully asleep on the couch. 6 hours later and still no pain whatsoever.

But it does help beak up the infection so i do it offten till the infection goes away. I got numbing ear drops AFTER asking my doctor. that helped while i was at school and thoguhtout the night. if you dont have a heatign pad you can make one by heating up salt in a pan and put it in a towel, ths may make a mess if the towel opens. another way is to buy the no pop popping corn and put it in a pouch and put it in the microwave.

Last night my ear was hurting a lot, so I asked my dad to put some hydrogen peroxide in it. I was hoping it would ease the pain a little, but it was still hurting. My mom gave me some pain killers and I went to bed.

When I woke up, the pain was worse than last night. I told my mom about it and she's going to take me to Urgent Care this afternoon. Earlier today I tried the hydrogen peroxide again. After I tilted me ear to let the solution out, I still heard some fizzing in my ear and my ear still hurts.

My advice:
1. If you can, go to Urgent Care ASAP.
2. For teens: I know it's embarrassing to talk to your parents sometimes, but you should tell them if your ear hurts ASAP. It will get worse if you don't take care of it now.
3. I don't recommend hydrogen peroxide for easing pain in your ear. The solution won't ease the pain as far as I know.
Question: Does anyone have a remedy that is natural, quick, simple, and will take care of pain quickly?

I have i guess a process that I do whenever I get a ear ache or infection. Mind you I am 20 years old and I'm not certain how this affects kids.

I start by cleaning my ears with a q-tip to remove any wax build up then pouring a capful of peroxide in the hurt ear for about 5-10 seconds, let it bubble it will help loosen the wax build up if that seems to be the issue.

I take a hot steamy shower holding a damp towel under the back of my ear or put hot water in a cup and let the steam rise into the ear.

after my shower I then swab in a bit of vicks into my ear to generate heat since the heat helps release pressure, I also apply vicks on the back on my neck and lightly on my cheeks.

I take 2 penicillin pills that help kill infections.

At bed time i use a heating pad to help keep my ear warm and usually by morning I'm ready and good to go

Had been suffering from an ear infection for a few days and my usual trick of getting rid of it with Ibuprofen wasn't working (normally it kills it off within a day or two). So, employing a bit of logic, I went down to the shops and got some TCP. 1 part TCP to 1 part tepid water and tip it into your ear and hold it for about 5 minutes. Do it twice and it's gone. It does feel like someone is pouring acid into your ear but the excruciating pain only lasts for about a minute after you get it out.

The white vinegar trick really works!

I got sick recently, and while I had this cold, I also managed to get a really bad ear infection. My ear felt plugged up, and really painful deep down in the inner ear.

I tried storebought drops and everything, with little to no effect. I can't go to the doctor because I have no health insurance, and little money.

So I came to this site, and heard of people using vinegar, lemon juice, and other acids to mess with the Ph levels of the ear.

I dropped a mixture of vinegar and water into the affected ear, with some minor instant relief. Next morning, the pain was completely gone, and the plugged-up feeling is subsiding. It's cured!

if you haven't mastered the technique of resting the edge of the cup on your upper lip while pouring, then you can use a straw but be VERY careful not to burn yourself!

He said lots of people did this. It's completey gross and I have googled it and can't find it anywhere where anyone else has done this so I am curious to see if anyone else has heard of this rememdy. He said they would find a wasp nest that had larvae in it. They would take a fresh larvae out and squeeze it and put the goop from it in the ear. OMG,,,I'm gagging just thinking about it,,,but then again, if it's hurting bad enough, a person would probably willing to try anything to make it stop.

This is only for fungal ear infections, also called swimmer's ear, or ear infections caused by water becoming trapped in the ear. Use antifungal cream, the most common type being for athlete's foot. The one I bought has an active ingredient Tolnaftate, but there are others. Just apply the cream inside the ear. It helped me within a few minutes, and after a day it almost completely healed. This has the benefit that you can have it in your ear without having to lie down.

All my life I have had ear infections I jump on line to find a home way of working it out cause of no medical insurance, so while im writing this you will go through it all with me I have red all the things on here on how to fix it and im going to mix the best three that I have found on here and I will tell you how I feel after im mixing 50 part baby oil and 50 part and 3 cap fulls of rubbing alcohol vinegar... brb.... I mixed it all in a sauce cup put the cup in hot water to warm but did not mix with hot water. I put one teaspoon full laid on the opposite side for about 5 min and I let it drain I did this for about 45 min and right after the first one I felt a great drop in pain levels and now I still feel the infection but not pain full level is about a 2 out of a 10 where it was to begin with. I will now take 400 milligrams of ibuprofen for the inflammation of the infection and some Tylenol for pain so I can sleep. And in about 12 hours I will comment on this very remedy of mine and tell you if it has gone, gotten better or just did not work....

Use a mustard plaster to drain an inner ear infection. This is not suggested for children or infants because it WILL cause a very red sun burn to the skin.

I tried this home cure after trying many home remedies (mostly ear drops) that did not work for me. My ear infection was associated with a very bad case of the flu and fluid build-up in the lungs. After a month, I still had the ear infection and hearing loss in the ear.

This home cure is a version of applying heat to the skin behind the ear to drain the fluid buildup. You may want to try other methods of heat application to the area behind the ear before trying this.

Mustard plaster home cure:
Make a mustard plaster in a small bowel using 1/4 teaspoon mustard powder and 2 tablespoons flour. Add warm water and mix with a spoon.

Cut a strip of gauze, flannel, or cloth so you have a strip that is about 1 1/2 inches long and 1/2 inch wide. Place the strip on a piece of Scotch tape. Spread the mustard plaster on the strip. If you have long hair, pin it up so you have access to the area behind the infected ear. Place the mustard plaster strip on the skin that is immediately behind the ear.

I left the strip on for 2 hours and then removed it. The skin was pink/red and I still had a hearing loss. The next day I had what appeared to be a bad sun burn -- but my hearing had returned.

WARNING: When you use a mustard plaster, you should check the skin to see if the skin is getting pink about every half hour for the first hour - and every 15 minutes after the first hour. I think this may work because the skin gets a slight burn and the heat (the burn) remains after the mustard plaster is removed.

How long should the mustard plaster be on the skin? I left this on for 2 hours and got a significant red skin burn (but it did work). You may want to try this for just one hour the first time you try it and see if that works for you. When the skin is pink, remove the mustard plaster. Absolutely do not leave this on more than 2 hours. Note that when you use a mustard plaster, you do not feel a heat build up when the plaster is on the skin. Again, remember to check for the 'pink' skin color at 15 minute intervals when you leave this on for more than 1 hour.

Grab a Q-tip and your rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) It's as simple as soaking the Q-tip and gently swabbing the sensitive tissue within the ear canal. This works great on the kind of pain that won't let you sleep on the ear. Works in 20 minutes or so. Feel free to apply as much as you want and as frequently as you want, to assure the quickest releif. If no Q-tip handy, get it in your ear some how; Pour it in from the cap or soak a cotton ball, tip your head and squeeze it in. Isopropyl alcohol is cheap and worth having in your med cabinet!

I grabbed my laptop and laid on my side on my bed, holding my head up with my arm, with my elbow on the bed. Just lying in the position INSTANTLY decreased the pain. I have been laying like this for about 15 mins now and the pain is almost gone. Every couple minutes I can hear some crackling in my ear, which I imagine, is fluids and such moving around, begining the healing process. If I had known it was this easy, I would have sat up hours ago.

Since I was small I got very bad ear infections from swimming and when I got a cold. No drops or nothing the docter prescribed worked. Then my Granddad told me to get a small piece off cotton whool and I had to sit next to him. He took a drag of his sigarette and blowed it into my ear and as soon as possible I had to put the cotton whool in my ear. It worked so great, I still use it until today. I even do it with my partner when he gets an infection.

I had an ear ache that was causing sharp pain through that entire side of my head. I melted some margarine and used a baster to squeeze it into my ear. I kept it in for about 5 minutes and then let it drain on a towel. I did this 2 times about 2 hours apart and my ear ache was gone in an hour. My mom did this when I was a child.

One thing that helps is baby oil.The thing that is great about this is it is easy to find and it is cheap. The way you do this is take a spoon and fill it with baby oil then put over the stove and warm it up.Then you pour it in the hurt ear and lay on the oppisite side.Warning make sure baby oil isn't too hot.

Recently, i got over a pretty bad flu and i still had a very sore throat. About two days after most of my flu symptoms went away my ears started popping. Later that night my ear felt completely clogged up and i couldnt hear out of it. So, i drop up to walgreens, got the walgreens brand ear pain reducer, some cotton balls, and a bottle of nyquil. Right after i got home i put a few drops of pain reducer in my ear, sealed my ear with half a cotton ball, took the recomended dosage of nyquil and drank a warm cup of fruit tea. Within 10 minutes- my ear pain was gone, my throat was feeling good, and i was ready to crawl into bed for a painless night!

I know it will sound extremely weird, but my mom is a smoker and we got this cure from my grandmother, her mother.

If you blow cigarette smoke, cigar, or other type of smoke from one person's mouth into the ear, it will make it feel better. This is my usual remedy, as I get earaches quite often.

for swimmers ear, or when fluid gets stuck in the outer ear, i take my hand to my ear a create an airtight seal between my palm and my ear. then i tilt my head sideways, and pump my hand up and down to create suction in the ear. do it for 15-30 seconds or so, and take your hand off your ear with your head still tilted and the water should come out at once.

unfortunately this doesnt work with middle or inner ear infections but its worth a try, it certainly cant hurt you.

I had a ear pain all night... I didn't sleep. I finally go the idea to come online and check out the home remedies as a quick fix. I tried the warm vinegar and alcohol mixture... it didn't work at all, and stung the crap out of my ears. I don't know if my ear infection is internal or external.

I finally called up my mom, and she told me to take a panadol till I go to the dr in the morning.

Take 2 panadol extras.

Don't bother with oils or vinegar stuff! They give brief relief but don't help permanently at all! They actually worsen it...Go to the doctors, get antibiotics and get some methyl inhalation liquid which you just add to hot water and breathe in the steam! I'm feeling better for the first time in 2 weeks!

When my children have earache I lay them on their side and put spit in their ear (not any food particles) and rub gently to make sure it go's right in. Their earache is gone within minutes!

Try using Ear Candles. Homeopathic specialists or natural health stores carry them. Follow the directions for them. Be certain you have someone with you to help you, and be patient.

I am not taking that weird antibiotic stuff, as most of it I am allergic to. I went to health food store and the guy recommended something for my ear. I have yet to buy it and I don't remember the name of it. I also know pro-biotics work to and pro-biotics also use for Bacterial Vaganosis and bladder infections, along with cranberry pills. Yet, there is another natural pill, which I forget the name, that heals ear infections. Go to the Health food store and they will tell you what to take.

When I was younger I used to use Vix and place on cotton ball, then place cotton ball in my ear. It hurt yea, but it took my ear infection away.

Also warm water, though it won't cure the infection but it does help with the pain.

Antibiotics are good if you can take the pills. I can't. I am allergic to most antibiotics. My doctor knows this, yet still gave me antibiotics to take.
I won't take that stuff, it's bad for me.
