I just learned another name for Hell: it's called Dry Socket. Holy mother of pearl…. When I got hit by a car years ago I thought I knew what pain was - every toe broken on my right foot, a hematoma on my right butt cheek, deep lacerations on my legs requiring many stitches, and generous portions of road rash – Disneyland.
A few weeks ago I had a problem wisdom tooth extracted and my dentist broke away from his humorous light hearted banter to give me a stern warning on how NOT to get a condition known as dry socket. 'No sucking from straws, spitting, or using tobacco or you my friend will find a new religion that begins and ends with pain.
I don't remember spitting and I consciously passed on straws and tobacco wasn't a problem but still somehow I earned the condition called dry socket.
Trying to describe the pain would be a disgrace and insult to the level we're talking about here. I can however tell you that at it's worse all I could do was close my eyes, rock back an forth while curling into fetal position and moan. During this process I found myself forgetting to breath and having to catch up with quick breaths. Time seemed to stand still as seconds seemed like minutes and I wondered how much I could endure before passing out. I don't drink - in fact it's against my religion but I was seriously considering breaking that rule because the pain was mocking the lortabs, vicodin, and morphine I threw at it. It’s a scary world when your pain is immune to what you once thought were heavy weight drugs.
The relief I found didn't come from the liquor store - it actually came from Wallgreens. My wife researched dry socket online and found this site where everyone was swearing by the Red Cross Tooth Ache kit. It was hard to believe that something so simple as clove oil could provide such miraculous relief but if your curled up like a baby suffering from dry socket and your wife says lets stuff some cotton dipped in clove oil in your tooth hole you’ll muster a barely visible nod and slowly open wide.
Trust me: lock/key fries/ketchup foot/shoe….dry socket/clove oil.

Yet another praise for the clove oil you buy at Walgreens. I was able to just use a few drops after cleaning with warm salt water.
I just wanted to help people know what they were going looking for when they get to the store. I was there at 3 A.M. and only found it by luck.
Link to a pic of what your looking for:
www.walgreens.com/store/catalog/Medications-and-Pain-Relief/Toothache-Kit/ID=prod357247&navCount=0&navAction=push-product
( If link doesn't work just Google 'DenTek toothache kit')
Oraljel and Lortab took pain from 9-10 to about 8-9 this took it down to 1-2 and only took 2 min. After I get my first nites sleep in almost a week I'll see if I can find some more of the pointy q-tips that came in the kit because they work great.
I hope everyone that came to this site looking for anything to make them or a loved one feel just a little better has the same luck I did.

I had an extraction on this past Tuesday and developed dry socket the very next day - like others have said, the sensations of throbbing pain radiated to surrounding teeth. It was getting unbearable, the pain was driving me crazy. My jaw was locked up and swollen as well.
I went searching for Clove oil and when I didn't find that, I ended up getting the Red Cross brand Toothache Kit. Best thing ever! At my Rite Aid, it was right there in the toothpaste aisle, in the section where you find Orajel and Anbesol. The price of the kit was $7.69.
How I used it was I placed one of the kit's little cotton pellets in the tweezers that come with it, wet the cotton with water first to cut the sting of the Eugenol (the bottle of liquid included in this kit is Eugenol, which is basically Clove Oil and it will sting, be careful), dipped the cotton into the oil and dabbed the socket. If your surrounding teeth are also feeling the pain, dab all over and around them too, I found that helps. ;) It worked for me instantly just by covering the area and other teeth with the oil - I didn't have to worry about packing the socket or anything. The relief lasts a long time for me, I just apply it once or twice a day if I need to.
Bless you all suffering with it, hope you can find the relief that you need, I know I did - and that was by reading your accounts and advice here, so thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Here is some important knowledge that I learned through personal experience.
If you go to the dentist for dry socket, there isn't a drug that they use. They use oil of cloves, which they call 'Eugenol' so that it sounds like a proper drug and not an ancient remedy. They apply eugenol to a small, brown strip of gauze, rinse out the socket with antibiotic mouthwash and water, and then use an instrument to pack the gauze inside the socket. This process is very painful and anesthetic is rarely used, and doesn't help much if it is. Also note that opiods and other pain medications have little or no effect on pain from dry socket. It is not known why.
Oil of cloves is absolutely the only thing known to relieve dry socket pain.
It is good to have a dentist do this rather than do it at home, since the same remedy is used, and because it is hard to do such a precise operation in your own mouth. There is a risk of opening the injury even more by incorrect self-application.
However, if a dentist visit is not possible or financially feasible, you can buy oil of cloves over-the-counter in the previously-mentioned Dentek or Red Cross toothache kits. The oil you get here is extremely potent. The kit comes with tweezers and small cotton balls, with instructions to dip the cotton balls in the oil and dab it on the dry socket. This is hard to do, and doesn't last long. It's very precise work, and only relieves pain until the oil has been washed away by saliva. Also, if a tiny amount of the oil touches another part of your mouth it will cause a very intense stinging burn.
What to do instead is forget the little cotton balls and the puny tweezers. Swish some salt water or diluted Listerine around in your mouth for about one minute. Dilute a drop of clove oil with a few drops of olive or cooking oil. Brush this mixture on a tiny piece of gauze (do not use cotten!), 2 or 3cm long and .5 to 1cm wide. Ball the gauze up and stuff it inside of the socket. This will hurt like a son of a b----, but the pain should subside within the hour. If you have another person available who you trust, you should ask them to do this for you, because it is not easy. Make sure to pack the gauze in very tightly, even though it will hurt. If the socket is very deep, you may need to use another strip of gauze.
If at any time you get clove oil in the wrong place, cleanse the area with olive or cooking oil. Do not rinse your mouth with water as this will spread the clove oil everywhere.
When the gauze comes out, if you still feel pain, reapply it. Keep doing this until it stops hurting. This can take upwards of six weeks to heal, or you may only have to do it once. The clove oil does not aid in the healing process, it is for pain relief only. Healing can only come with time. So don't worry about not using enough clove oil, just use the amount that relieves your pain.
Be sure to rinse your mouth with saltwater or diluted Listerine before each reapplication of your dressing.

This home remedy truly works for dry socket!
Needed supplies:
* Clove Oil & * Syringe or cotton swabs/gauze.
I got my bottom right wisdom tooth pulled on Friday. I felt better by Sunday night with no pain. Then, starting Monday I got sharp, throbbing pains coming from inside the socket. I shined the light in the hole and I see a white thing, which if I am right, is the bone without the blood clot. I was hurting so bad by today, Wednesday, and my Aunt gave me a small bottle of this clove oil...which is like her fragence for her potpurri.. I didn't know you could put this in your mouth.. haha anyways I got a medicine syringe and put it in the clove oil bottle and got just enough for about 2-3 drops... and put it DIRECTLY in the hole...It burned for about 2-3 minutes AND INSTANT PAIN RELIEF! It no longer hurts and I'm shocked that it just numbed the entire area! Even my lip feels numb..don't get any on your lips! That bbbbuuurrrns!
This home remedy truly works and now I don't even have to pay for a dentist visit!! The clove oil doesn't taste too horrible...but not pleasant either..leaves your mouth with a clean fragrance though!
Hope this helps others out there! - anthony

I had a molar pulled last Tuesday. The dentist seemed really good, warning me about dry socket. I did everything I was supposed to, but somehow still got it. I went back to him two days ago and he gave me more narcotics and told me to come back to him today. Last night I was in so much pain I wanted to put my head through a wall. I got on-line, and found several websites claiming the same thing about clove oil. I went out at 3am to Walmart and got the wonderful clove oil. I was finally able to get some sleep. Today I kept my appointment with the dentist. I told him what I did, and hed appeared angry. He prepared a mixture of some kind of medicine and gauze. He put numbing gel on my gums, waited less than a min, and shoved the needle in my gums before I was numb. I endured it. He then told me to let him know when my lips were numb. They never got numb, but my cheek did. (it was only one shot) He then started to push his packing into my socket with one of his instruments. He asked me if it hurt.. I told him a little, but that I was fine. He then took his thumb and shoved the gauze deep into teh socket. I screamed. without a word, he walked out leaving me there with my eyes watering. He then came back in with a script for 6 percasets. Told me to come back Friday and he would take out the packing, wait ten min, and if there was still pain, he would repack it. I walked the 3 blocks home in tears. I tossed the appointment card in the trash. right now the pain is worse than ever, but I am afraid to try to pull out the gauze and apply the clove oil. I take it out when the Ibuprofin takes affect. I told him the percs were useless. the script is shredded in the trash. I wont be going back.

After having all four wisdom teeth removed I developed dry socket at both lower extraction sites. The pain has been well documented here so I wont go into it. I found this excellent site and was lucky enough to find a nearby drug store (Walgreens) with the Red Cross Toothache kit.
This kit contains a bottle of Eugenol 85% which is the same active ingredient my oral surgeon uses to pack dry sockets.(He actually uses a prepackaged tiny strip of sterile gauze coated in a mixture of 100% Eugenol mixed with a small amount of Vaseline.)
I have only a few cautions to add to excellent info on this site.
1. If at all possible, before packing the socket with Eugenol or clove oil soaked sterile cotton or gauze as described in earlier post you should thoroughly rinse the socket with a small irrigation syringe (no needle, ask druggist for one) or Waterpick on a lower setting, filled with Scope or a similar mild mouthwash. Quite a bit of food can accumulate in these sockets.
2. REMOVE, change the packing and thoroughly rinse at least every 48 hours. Failure to do so could result in TOXIC SHOCK, a life threatening condition. This is very unlikely, but if someone followed the advice from this site just left the packing in, it could happen.
The same goes for any packing done by your dentist or oral surgeon. Return to him to have it removed within 2 days.
3. You may also consider adding yogurt to your diet or purchasing some Probiotics from a health food store because the antibiotics you should have been prescribed can kill off your natural flora. Another plus, yogurt is an easy to eat source of sustenance in your condition. Look for live culture yogurt without nuts or other ingredients that that can become lodged in the sockets and be difficult to remove with the irrigation syringe.

Here's a remedy that is sure to work 100% quick and easy. When you are having tooth/gum pains, you don't have time to call around and get Dentist answering machines, or confused dentist telling you to make an appointment to win your time and money. First, take a pain killer such as Advil, Alieve, or Tylenol to decrease the pain as much as possible. Gently rinse your mouth out with luke warm water and salt. Next apply clove oil to a cotton swab and gently dab inside the affected area. you will begin to see old food particles/ old blood stains or what ever on the swab. Repeat with clove oil filled swabs until no more stains are visible. Next take a tiny pieace of gauze/cotton and dip it in the clove oil. Gently roll it until it is a perfect fit for the open area and place it in the open area. Lightly tap it in the hole with a new cotton swab..'NOT YOUR FINGER!!!'
Leave it in for about 24 hours, and then remove to allow gums to heal properly. This should cure any pain and dryness until gums start to heal. If pain reappears after 2 days...repeat the process. Good Luck and happy living. :o)

I came to this page looking for help. I could not afford going back to the dentist. I tried the clove oil. and couldn't beleive the relief that came within minutes. for $5.00 I found this great little kit. Its called Red Cross Toothahe. It comes with a small bottle of oil, great little curved tweezers, but the best is the cotton pellets that fit perfectly in the hole. Thanks for the help.

Wow! Thank you so much - the clove oil really does work! I had a wisdom tooth out a week ago and gradually the pain became unbearable. Painkillers barely touched it, including some heavy duty ones my mum has - I tried these one night and still woke up in agony after 4 hours. In desperation, I decided to check out the net for possible remedies and found this page. I bought a bottle of clove oil and popped a few drops in the hole and hey presto! The pain has dropped from an all-consuming 9 to a barely-there 1. Thank you, thank you, thank you! :)

I want to thank everyone that posted before me I had an abscessed tooth for over a week I couldnt eat anything and was in so much pain 7 day's later I finally got it pulled(lower left molar)I thought it would be like the other one I had had pulled smooth and pain free,I was wrong as soon as the numbing wore off I was in soo much pain I honestly think it was wayyy worse then having an abscessed tooth I went for four days taking my pain pills hydrocodone, and they didn't even take the edge off so I went back to the dentist and he said I have a dry socket and just wrote me a script for more pain pills but they still didn't help even taking two of them I was still at a 12 on the 1-10 pain scale:(..
I got online and googled dry socket and found this site,Thank god!!
I read everyone's entry and they all said the same thing so I drove straight to walgreens and got the toothache kit and it don't taste that good lol but within seconds I was at a 2 on the pain scale and I honestly dont know what I would do if I hadn't found this site..
So again thank you all very much and anyone that has any kind of tooth or mouth pain should buy this kit!!It really really works and it's all natural!!

I can attest to the effectiveness of clove oil and cloves in reducing pain. I have used both the oil and the powder. Works wonderfully.
One needs to be careful if you have certain types of resin fillings because the clove oil can react negatively with them.
The other concern is that the powdered clove can darken your teeth. I have used both of these home remedies, but just wanted to mention these concerns.

Previous advice from Andy has worked well for me. I have dry socket from a first molar traumatic extraction. I could see down into the socket but it looked as though some of the deep root had clotted but there is a hole in the socket. First, I cleaned out the socket by very gently irrigating using an ordinary syringe. I filled the syringe with warm saline solution and irrigated the socket (over a sink) by squirting a full syringe into the socket a couple of times and gently rinsing out warm saline solution. Then I soaked a small ball of cotton wool from the end of a cotton bud in clove oil and put it into the socket for 24 hrs. I then removed the dressing and left the socket open to heal. The pain took about 15 minutes to diminshed and I cant believe how much better I feel. Now have to wait and see if it works.

I am now a believer in clove oil! I was in so much pain after having a severly impacted wisdom tooth removed that nothing helped. I tried Vicodin, ibuprofin, anything but nothing worked. Turns out, I had dry socket. After reading reviews on here, I tried the clove oil and it worked instantly! So far it's lasted 6 hours and not even a hint of the pain coming back! No more pills for me! This is proof that not everything has to be solved with modern meds.

It worked, it worked, it worked! My wife has been in pain for 3 months! I just wonder why none of her doctors told her about this! They have had her on narcotics, antibiotics, and eveerything under the sun but nobody said 'hey this will relieve the sorness directly'. I'm so glad I found this site. I went to walgreens, bought the Red Cross Toothache kit for $6.57 and within 2 minutes of using it her pain went from an insaine 12 to about a 2 on a scale of 1-10. Nothing else worked this fast, lasts this long, or relieves this much. The narcotics would take 15-40 minutes to work, brought her pain to a manageable but still painful 6, and only lasted 4 hours.
I would highly recommend to anyone reading this to use it the way these posts have described and enjoy the relief for yourself or your loved one.
Happy Living!

Pain Scale from 1 to 10 (10 being so unbearable you need to go to the hospital)
Worst at a 9 but usually at around an 8
2 Advil alone - 6 - lasts about 2 hours
Tylenol with Codeine (or other pain killers) alone - 5 - lasts about 2 hours - get in either Canada or a prescription from your oral surgeon. Be careful taking painkillers because if you're having any pain like mine, the pain has spread into the inner ear and can throw balance off. The pain killers WILL make you loopy and I suggest lie down for a nap or a movie while these are in effect.
Painkillers and advil at the same time - 3 or 4 - lasts about 2 hours
Red Cross Tooth Ache Kit - 4 (but burns other parts of mouth) - lasts about 45 mins to an hour. When I first went to use the red cross kit, I submerged the tiny cotton ball it comes with all the way into the pained socket and its accidentally fell in and got stuck. The pain was gone almost completely, it was down to a 1 for multiple hours. Problem was that I am 7 hours away from my oral surgeon and now cannot get the cotton ball removed for 6 days which is not good. I tried removing it myself with the tweezers the pack comes with but ended up hurting it more, causing my mouth to bleed and a lot of pain the next day.
Clove oil mixed with vodka (purchased at a Wiccan herb shop) - 4 - lasts about 45 mins
Sockit (received from oral surgeon) - 3 - lasts about an hour and doesn't taste bad like Red Cross or clove oil (I would have used this the entire time except I unfortunately ran out and I'm 7 hours from my oral surgeon)
Kank A Softbrush Gel (Oral Anesthetic) - 2 - lasts for 10 to 15 minutes and causes whole area to become numb but in cases of extreme pain that need to be solved immediately, it works well. Purchased at local Kinney, CVS, Walgreens, etc.
As you can see, I've tried every remedy in the book. I am managing my pain, taking medication every 4 hours and in that hour or two window where I can't take more and the pain returns, I use other remedies. I've been rinsing the socket with warm salt water after every meal, which are consisting of soups, pastas, ice creams, puddings, etc. Rinsing down cause pain initially but after about 15 minutes the pain goes down to an 7 or even a 6 sometimes because the socket isn't agitated. Put heat on it, alternating every 20 minutes to promote healing. Either use a wash cloth soaked in warm water, or if you have one, use a heating pad.
I'm sorry to anyone having to endure this pain as well. It is one of the most uncomfortable experiences of my life. I hope everyone's sockets heal well and no pain of this sort will plague you again. Meanwhile, I hope my list of remedies and how much they helped me were helpful to you.

Follow-Up on my previous post. This is Wed. 4-15-09. I spoke with the nurse at my oral surgeon's office about my routine - I have been rinsing with warm salt water frequently through the day, brushing (lightly around the dry socket) in the morning and flossing. At night I have been brushing (lightly around the dry socket) and flossing, irrigating the socket with warm salt water using a plastic syringe, after irrigating I have been applying the Red Cross Toothache clove soaked cotton ball into the socket for one or two mins. and then removing it. (folks the directions say to do this, DO NOT leave the cotton ball in there for an extended amount of time.) The socket needs open air to heal properly. The nurse also told me that the clove oil will prolong the healing time, so use it only when you really need to. She said once a day is fine. Also the dry socket will heal up by itself, you DO NOT have to go in there for a scrape job to form a new clot. She also said it is fine to take 600 millagrams of Ibuprofen every three to four hours. The reason I called in the first place was I was worried about infection, she said as long as you keep up with the irrigating and rinses you should not have a problem. She also informed me that standard healing time is about three to four weeks, so 'hold on', it will get better. My pain level since Monday night has been holding at a steady 2 or 3 on a 10 scale. It was about a 7 on Monday afternoon before using the Red Cross Toothache Kit.

Had 4 wisdom teeth extracted 6 days ago. About 3 days ago I started having earaches and around one of the lower extractions the worst pain I've ever had. In addition the other lower extraction has a bad taste coming from it, and its mildly painful. Misery. Saw this page, decided to go to the oral surgeon first. Ya know what he dressed it with? Clove oil on gauze. He didn't charge me for the visit (your own oral surgeon never should, but early this week I was assigned to a work location 1000 miles from home, I had to go to a new surgeon), but it wasn't worth the hassle; had I known that's what he would use I would have started with that. No luck on the toothache kit mentioned several times on this page, none of the drug stores had it. There is a small natural foods/supplements type store in town though, and they had some clove oil (also learned if you can't find it with the health/beauty stuff clove oil can be found with either the spices or the cake decorating/candy making products). Also they suggested tea tree oil for its anti-microbial and mildly anesthetic qualities. So I got both of those, took a small glass of water with about 10 drops of each oil, and used it in that syringe with the curved tip the oral surgeon gave me to irrigate both lower sockets. I'm guessing it might take a couple times rinsing it out for that bad taste to go away, but I cleaned until no solid debris was coming out anymore. Next up I took a piece of gauze, put a few drops of clove oil on it (get a medicine dropper!) and stuffed it into the back of my mouth on top of the offending sockets. Problem pretty much solved. A little ibuprofen and I'm pretty much pain-free. This is horribly painful, hope you have as much luck with it as I had!

The first two days after my four wisdom teeth were removed, I hardly had any pain. Didn't need any of the painkillers they gave me. This is easy, I thought. I felt so good I thought I would go back to work even before my pre-approved sick leave was over.
About the fourth day, one early morning I woke up from pain in the two lower sockets, more painful than right after surgery. I started to take the painkillers and they helped me through the night and following day. The following night (or early morning) I woke up from worse pain. I doubled the painkillers and that helped me through another night and day.
Today the pain was so bad I felt like I could overdose on the painkillers. Luckily my surgeon is near me and I was supposed to see her tomorrow, so I rang up and asked for an earlier appointment instead. She saw me today and told me I had 'dry socket'. She irrigated my sockets and put some resorbable stuff in it. She said it was like a 'sedative'. Boy I felt so much better. I could live AND be sane again, and I had only been suffering from dry socket for one day...(I bow down to you brave souls that have had to endure it for more than a day)
Because it worked so well, I wanted to make sure that it stayed that way. I wasn't planning on going back to the dentist every day for a bit of mercy. In any event she didn't sound like I would even need to go back because 'everything looks fine' and I would go back to work in another two days. But I could not risk having to feel pain like that for another minute. I had to find out what she used.
Talked to a dentist friend and learned about eugenol, which is what the surgeon probably used, which is mainly clove oil. Drove to the chemist and bought some. I haven't even opened the bottle and I can smell it. It smells similar to but not exactly the same as the stuff that the surgeon put in my sockets.
After reading these wonderful posts, I can sleep tight knowing that should I ever need more of the same stuff that my surgeon used, I have it in a bottle by the bedside. Because of what I have read here, I have no doubt that it WILL work as intended.
Thank YOU all for sharing your experiences and reaffirming the benefits of clove oil. You have lit up my life by posting here. I have faith in humanity again. And thank God for clove oil. I'm not too thankful of God for putting me on this earth but I am grateful that he at least also put clove on this earth.

I just want you all to know that if you have dry socket...you CAN fix it without a dentist! I was in sooo much pain for the last 2 days. I couldn't talk or open my mouth without crying. I literally just slept. Thanks to this website, I found out about clove oil. I was so desparate for help and couldn't make it back to my oral surgeon, so I decided to give it a try! And literally, I applied two drops into the hole, and it was IMMEDIATE relief! THANK YOU! It's amazing stuff, I feel so much better. It comes in a really teeny tiny bottle thats about $5 so I bought two. All I did was call my local Jewel pharmacy and they ordered it for me and had it the next day. As long as you call by 9pm they should be able to get it for you in store by the next morning. Just do it....relief is great!

I was skeptical about using the clove oil on my dry socket. I went to GNC today (2/28/12) and purchased the oil for 6.99. And I must say it actually worked. The taste is horrible and will make your mouth and tongue numb but it’s totally worth it to stop the pain and hold you over to be able to see your dentist. I would recommend it

I never type on these things but OMG 15 minutes ago my dry socket pain was at an 8. And this is my ELEVENTH day dealing with it. I'm on oxycodone 10mg and aceteminophen 650mg and it is barely working anymore. I ran down to my grocery store pharmacy and BEHIND the counter they had clove oil! INSTANT relief! It is a true miracle . My pain is gone on both sides and it only took a few seconds. I used a qtip for accuracy because the stuff is STRONG but omg this website was a blessing. CLOVE OIL is the way to go.

I had two wisdom teeth surgically removed a week ago, one of them healed perfectly fine but the other one turned in to a dry socket. The pain was unbearable due to the infection. After researching this website I found that the best remedy was the Red Cross Toothache kit, then I called a dentist friend of mine who lives in Peru and she added the following procedure witch came out to be almost a miracle solution for me. First, mix warm water with a bit of the clove oil provided with the kit and flush the socket profusely with a syringe until all the residues and particles are cleaned out. Second, clean the socket with a cotton swab previously submerge in the same warm oil/water mix. As you repeat this process you will feel how the pain and discomfort goes away. Third, Make a small roll of gauze and dip it in clove oil and carefully insert it in the socket and leave it. Repeat this procedure after every meal. Keep it clean and follow up with your Doctor.

I have been suffering dry socket since last wednesday when i had all four wisdom teeth removed. The pain really kicked in on the Friday (2days after surgery) but by Sunday morning (4 days after surgery) the pain got so bad i called the surgeons emergency number. Would have been great to have been told about clove oil then rather then told to sit tight until the next day when they would see me.
I had been advised by my surgeon to avoid ibprofen and instead stick to paracetamol and codine based pain killers, which i will say were not worth me taking as they did nothing, the only time i noticed any pain relief was when i was taking fast acting ibprofen based pills.
Once i got to see my surgeon he was fantastic, gave me a local, cleaned out the socket thoroughly and packed it with a paste that he compared the taste of to chewing tobbaco. Absolutely disgusting stuff and i was sceptical of it working, i thought the pain relief was down to my having a slow acting local and put the pain relief down to not feeling anything at all, but once it wore off it was fine.
Returned this morning (tuesday 6 days post op) and they removed most of the brown paste from the socket, gave me a few syringes and told me to start irrigating the socket with warm salt water starting on christmas day which will be Sunday to get the rest of the paste out of the wound.
Hope that it works as the surgeons have finished for the year now so if it doesn't heal i will be back to ibiprofen until the beginning of january!
Tip do not get wisdom teeth out 11 days before christmas! They all go on holidays and leave you on your own leaving no room for complications!

I have had my wisdom tooth extracted and had dry socket. I went to the dentist and he used gauze socked in clove oil. It worked great. my pain went from about a 10 to a 1. But just pouring clove oil at the site only lasts temporary but soaking the gauze lasts for a fews days when you insert it in the hole of the gum

DenTek Toothache Kit (red cross) cost me about $7.50. First I rinsed my mouth out with warm salt water and then dabbed a little of this 'Eugenol' (oil of cloves) onto my two upper dry sockets. Spit out any spit that accumulates after dabbing! Pain went from 9 down to 1.5. Tastes bad and stings but gets rid of that throbbing constant pain! Relief lasted me about 4 hours. MIRACLE!! Also taking ground cloves and water (50/50) and dabbing on helped. I have told as many people as I could about this SIMPLE and CHEAP remedy! It was going to cost me close to $200 to be gassed and plugged!

I truly Thank God for this site. I was so glad to see that someone else had experienced the same pain I had, at least, I knew it wasn't my imagination. I had two teeth extracted the Thursday before Christmas and OMG, what was I thinking. I went back to work after my appointment and I was fine. Went to work on Friday, I was still fine. On the evening of Christmas Eve, OMG I just couldn't believe I was beginning to experience pain. Well, by Christmas Day, the pain escalated to a 15. I was popping Ibuprofen 800mg at a time every 2 1/2 - 3 hours and it was not touching the pain. I read my discharge instructions from my dentist and it described Dry Socket symptoms and the next step was I was on Google searching for Home Remedies for Dry Socket and after reading all the posts, I realized that our symptoms are all very similar. I went back to my dentist's associate, because he was on vacation, on the Tuesday following Christmas because their office was closed the Monday after. The dentist irrigated the socket and packed it with medicine, which in about 15-20 mins, it felt really good, NO PAIN and I had some Vicodin 5/500. As much as I hate narcotics, let me tell you, I was willing to give them a shot should the pain return. Again, I went back to work. By the time I was getting off work, I could not believe the pain that returned. I went to several local pharmacies and their stories were identical, 'someone had just bought the last Red Cross toothache kit.' I repeatedly questioned, 'you have got to be kidding me, right?' Finally, I went to a Rite Aid and they actually had one vial of Clove Oil. At this point, I wasn't even concerned about the cost, it was the only vial in the area and it was going to be mine, Great suggestion, I can't thank you all enough for sharing your stories. Clove oil on a small gauze sponge did magic. It has provided the longest relief thus far. I have come into the New Year with this lingering pain, but I am praying that by the time I awaken today, I will be pain free.

Clove oil is absolutely wonderful to ease dry socket pain. And if you are a worrier (like I am), it was my dentist who gave it to me. I went in with dry socket pain about a week after having a wisdom tooth extracted, and he packed it with gauze and clove oil. He said it has been used since the Middle Ages, and is still used because it works. The clove oil numbs the pain, but also irritates the gums a bit, which re-triggers the healing process that got interrupted and left you with dry socket in the first place.

My dentist told me I would feel great in three days after my molar extraction and that I would only need ibuprofen for pain. After 48 hours I was in so much pain I called him for a prescription for a painkiller and was given Hydrocodone, which I took as prescribed and which did not even begin to touch the pain. I found this website and bought clove oil and tea tree oil and put one drop each on a piece of gauze and topped it with a whole capsule of vitamin E oil. This was soothing and I had the feeling it was promoting healing of the wound. I took 3 GRAMS of powdered vitamin C every four hours to promote healing. I was taking 4 Excedrin (aspirin + caffeine) for pain every 4-6 hours, which allowed me to rest. I changed the clove oil-tea tree oil-vitamin E compresses frequently--using 6 or 7 in one afternoon. After 72 hours, I added swishing with warm salt water to keep the wound clean and kept up the vitamin C routine. I felt a little less pain, and that was encouraging. I stopped the salt water rinses and changed to rinsing with peroxide diluted 1:4 with warm water. I switched from caffeinated aspirin to ibuprofen, 4 tablets every 6 hours. It's been two weeks and my wound is completely healed, no pain. I saw my dentist yesterday and he said the site looks very good. I still gave him a swift kick for making me think it was no big deal and I'd be all well in three days! What a joke!

Why didn't I look this up on the Internet earlier? I sincerely thank everyone who's posted helpful messages on this forum. I had two bottom wisdom teeth extracted two weeks ago. My doctor (a recent graduate and a first year resident) struggled from the very beginning, poking the anesthesia needle through my chin by mistake and ending up calling his senior faculty doctor to complete the extraction of one tooth. Post surgery, he told me I should come back if bleeding continues beyond two days, else just rinse my mouth with salt water. Bleeding continued for five days, and I went to see the doctor. He got some food particles out and said I had dry sockets. He stuffed gauze soaked in clove oil (Eugenol) into both sockets. He said it would heal soon and no post op visit is necessary. Two days later, the gauze came out of the sockets and then again I started feeling this excruciating pain. I went back to the clinic and a different doctor came to see me. This doctor seemed more knowledgeable. He did the dry socket packing for me and said I should come back if it hurts again. Today I went back again for re-packing for one tooth. After I came home, the other one came out of the socket and there goes again... it started hurting like hell. I searched online and here I am. Why didn't my doctors mention that I could go buy Eugenol off the shelf from drug stores at a very reasonable price and do the packing myself? Each time I went to see a doctor, I had to endure a 2-3 hour wait. If this is something people can easily do at home, why aren't the doctors telling people go do it yourself and don't waste my time! In any case, after reading numerous posts on this forum, I immediately went to a local Walgreens and got the Red Cross Toothache Kit. I followed the instructions from this website, half hour after applying it, pain is gone. I understand that this pain relief is temporary and has nothing to do with healing. Regardless, this is extremely helpful and I thank everyone for sharing their experiences.

If your a woman on birth control and are going to get an extraction or oral surgery; stop taking your birth control or plan your surgery when your on a low dose birth control cycle (Maybe even that time of the month, which would be brutal, lol but it is a lot better than a dry socket). What happens is it can dislodge the blood clot or keep it from even forming which is how you will heal. It has to do with the estrogen in the birth control pill.
Hope this helps

I had to ask for clove oil at the pharmacy and while I was there, I asked her about dry sockets, she suggested filling a syringe (like the ones you use for kids medicine) with warm salt water and try flushing out the socket first. I did and it stopped hurting at least until I ate again. She said food gets in the hole and irritates it, causing pain. I haven't had to use the clove oil (yet) so maybe I can return it and get my 5 bucks back!

Instant Relief! I had my last molar on the left bottom of my mouth removed 6 days ago due to a break in the tooth down to the pulp. The extraction went ok or so I was told, I was completely out.
My Dr. sent me home with Demerol for the pain and prescribed one every 4 to 6 hours for pain. The first two days weren't bad and Aleeve seemed to do the trick just fine. On the third day I woke up with throbbing pain in the socket, a lump under my jaw below where the tooth was extracted and an inner ear ache that seemed to reach down the ear canal directly to where it connects to the throat.
I've been dealing with this horrible pain for the past 4 days. The demerol hasn't touched it and neither has gargling with warm salt water or medicated mouth wash.
I jumped on this site at 4:00 today and within 5 minutes found your remedy of Clove Oil. I immediately went to CVS and bought the recommended 'First Aid Toothache Medication Kit' complete with cotton plugs, tweezers and Clove oil. I soaked the plug in the oil, squeezed out the excess and stuck it in the socket for the recommended 1 minute.
Folks...I'm here to tell you...this works!!!!! Within 10 seconds, the pain was subsiding. Some of the oil spilled on my tongue and gum and they are now both sufficiently numb however, the burning from the oil is nothing compared to the relief that I now feel.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I could hug each and everyone of you for recommending this fix.
I am one happy camper :)

I just wanted to thank everybody for his or her advice and comments. My husband bought the Red Cross Toothache kit for me today. I followed the directions and immediately received relief from this horrible pain. On a scale of one to ten I was a nine and now I am a zero. As others have commented do your best to touch the extraction place only. I accidentally touched the corner of my lip and it burned like crazy; though it lasted only a short while. I am thanking the heavens above for finding this web site. My extraction was 3 days ago and by last night I was ready to take a long walk off a short bridge, the pain was unbearable. I 100% percent recommend Red Cross Toothache product. The taste is gross but well worth the results. Who knew that so many people could fall in love with cloves!
Thank you,

Hello all,
I got my bottom right wisdom tooth taken out finally after weeks of pain due to the swelling in my gums. I thought I was in pain BEFORE I got it taken out, but the dry socket kicked in 3 days after I got the tooth removed and it is just a white hot pain to the point where I want to pass out. After 5 days, I finally called my surgeon and he took me in right away and gave me these dissolvable strips to put on the area. I was completely confused as to how these tiny dissolveabe strips of 'medicine' would cure the pain without numbing the area, so I was amazed. He put a strip in for me around 4pm and the pain did not return until I started getting ready for work the next morning around 7 am. He had given me a few strips to take home (to get me through the Thanksgiving holiday pain free since the office would be closed). Unfortunately, he put the strips in a paper envelope and the 'medicine' soaked into the paper of the envelope and once it reached the dry socket, it only lasted about an hour. Sadly, I used up the strips before Thanksgiving, and had to endure the pain through the holiday. The 'medicine' ended up being pure clove oil, which would have been great to know over the phone instead of wasting a trip, but I respect the professionalism and the fact that they advised I come in immediately so they could help.
Anyway, I have had the dry socket now for going on 8 days and I thought that I was going crazy or that something was really wrong. Like many, I was seriously convinced that this pain was never going to go away and my face was going to throb in agony forever. Today, before joining my family for dinner, my boyfriend took me to the nearest open grocery store with intentions to stock up on extra strength Orajel, and I ended up getting the Kank-A instead. (I am KICKING myself though, because they HAD the Red Cross Kit and I didn't get it! I didn't see this website until later today!!!!! I will definitely be grabbing it tomorrow!) I also have been hugging a bottle of Ibuprofin for the past week as well. The surgeons office gave me a prescription for Hydrocodone (Generic Vicodin), but I honestly hated it. The Hydrocodone makes me feel like a complete weirdo when it starts wearing off, and I did not like it at all. I have 200 mg Ibuprofin, so I take 3 of those at a time 2 or 3 times a day and this pretty much puts a block on the nerve for a few hours. (One of these times is usually around 3am, for some reason, that is the 'witching hour' where the pain REALLY flares up, probably because my mouth is hanging open while I'm sleeping and the air is hitting the nerve.) It hurts so bad that it wakes me up and I've just paced around the house in a panic trying to 'walk off' the pain because I don't know what else to do. This is where the Orajel and salt rinses really come in handy.
My opinion is that Kank-A is virtually the same as Extra Strength Orajel, but less of a suffocating numbing (since naturally it is going to slip down your throat considering the location of the tooth), and this can be uncomfortable. Unfortunately, Kank-A only lasts about a half hour (I really painted my jaw with that stuff), and I found myself brushing away on the hour, but it does help temporarily.
The Clove Oil helped beautifully, and as I mentioned, kept the pain away for 12+ hours. It burns if it hits other tissue in the mouth, and smells/tastes terrible, but when you are in that much pain, the taste is almost welcoming.
Salt rinses are always going to be recommended by your dentist every 4 hours or so, but you can do it whenever you want. I use warm water. Cold water probably wouldn't feel good because the area is sensitive.
Black tea bags can be used by just getting them wet and putting them in the area, it neutralizes the pain and also sucks toxins out of the socket. I tried this today, and it's not one of my favorite suggestions because the tea bag pretty much takes up your whole mouth and is uncomfortable and makes you feel like drooling. It also does not really help with getting rid of the pain -- brings it down to about a 4ish I would say, but still uncomfortable.
I'm really happy I found this website because reading all the other entries I can see that others have felt my pain and even been worse off than me! Thank you for all the tips and suggestions!

I'm a dentist and I'm pleased to read this quality advise for dry sockets following an extraction, but can I make a few suggestions
-First off NO dentist or oral surgeon charges for a post op visit following an extraction and if they do find a new dentist, so you are actually spending 7 more dollars than you need to.
-As some people have mentioned improper use of eugenol can cause toxic shock syndrome and then doctor uses Rx antibiotics to rinse the extraction site.
-A dry socket is not the only post op complication that can occur following an extraction and so why not get it checked if it is free
-Finally by going in to the dentist, they will most likely write you a new script to keep you out of pain which is the ultimate goal when treating dry sockets

I had oral surgery on Tuesday to remove partially impacted lower wisdom teeth. They went into dry socket late Thursday. I'm a bit old at 47 to still have had them, but never the less, they finally had to come out from decay over the years and the pain had started weeks ago.
I have all of the narcotic pain relievers and well as ibuprofen, but the clove oil (active ingredient)in the tooth ache kits does the trick.
You can even save a little money (approx. $2) and just buy the clove oil. It's behind the pharmacy counter (if they are out it can be ordered in a day). It comes at 100% where as the tooth ache kits come at 85%.
Just clean the sockets with a syringe or water pik on the LOWEST setting (mix of water and mouthwash), rinse with warm salt water and apply the clove oil with a Q-tip and spit out the excess. I would not reccommend packing with anything as it must be open to heal.
It REALLY stops the dull throbbing excruciating pain. I did everything as instructed, but dry socket still happened.
In my opinion, the only way in the future to avoid dry socket is ONLY eat/drink foods like yogurt with no fruit pieces, soup/broth, drink protein shakes, carrot juice, apple sauce, pudding, basically nothing solid that can dislodge the clot for at least a week. No coughing, spitting, or yawning.
Once the clot becomes dislodged, it apparently doesn't matter what you eat as long as you clean out and rise the socket(s)after EVERY meal. It's the trapped minute food particles that cause infection and ungodly pain.
Best of luck to all of the 'newbies' that read this site and postings.

The toothache kit is such a blessings. I got all four wisdom teeth taken out about a week and a half ago and first went to my dentist for my dry socket. They put the cotton soaked clove oil in my open sockets four times and finally took them out for 'good.' of course my lower right starting hurting again, and thankfully I found this website an immediately went to the nearest walgreens. My kit did not come with cotton as said before so I just took the end off a cotton swab, soaked it in the oil and stuffed it into the open socket with a pair if sanitized tweezers. (but left a little sticking out so I could grab it with the tweezers.) I left it in for about two minutes and the pain is gone. This us probably the best home remedie I have ever dealt with. Thank you to whoever figured this out.

Had a tooth extracted Monday. Been dealing with dry socket pain all week through today, Sunday. Found this sight. Clearly clove oil is the way to go. Neither Walgreens or Rite-Aid had the Red Cross toothache kit. I made my own kit. First there was the clove oil. Had to get it from the pharmacist as they didn't have it with the tooth care products. About $5.50 for a small vial. What about the Small cotton swabs to put in the socket? Just gently pull the cotton tip off a cue-tip and with tweezers, medicate the cotton with the clove oil, then place the medicated cotton gently in the socket. Once there, use the end of the cue-tip that no longer has cotton on it to gently pack the socket. Voila, no pain.
So, build your own kit with:
1. Clove Oil
2. Cue-tips
3. Tweezers
Amazing how much we take for granted being pain free!

My parents always kept a bottle of oil of cloves in the medicine cabinet when I was a kid. They said it was for toothaches. Since I've never had a toothache until now, I had no idea just how right mom and dad were. Three days after having a lower molar extracted, I developed dry socket. Before the pain hit full force, I called around to find some clove oil. No one had it, but CVS had the Red Cross Toothache kit in stock. I applied the oil using the cotton pellets and within a couple of minutes, the pain was greatly reduced. Works great! If you get the oil on your lips, just rub them with olive oil. It cuts through the clove oil and the burning stops immediately.

I had oral surgery for routine extractions on Tuesday, and by Thursday night I knew something wasn't right. This is by far the most helpful website I've ever come across!! I have been in unbearable pain for a few days now and taking more motrin than I should. I cannot take narcotic pain meds, so I was becoming a bit desperate. I fear the dentist and don't want to go back for 'more'. I bought the Red Cross Toothache Kit and a small bottle of clove oil........ such relief!!!! It truly feels like a miracle at this point. I had to ask for the clove oil at the pharmacy, which they keep behind the counter (Rite Aid). The taste is a little 'icky' but well worth the relief you will soon feel. I hope this remedy allows me to get through and promote healing. The best $10 I've spent in a long time! Good Luck!!

I had a tooth extracted and two days later found out I have a dry socket, even though I did aftercare by the book. My dentist packed the socket with wood shaving soaked in oil of clove. It felt better for a few hours then the pain started again. Once I washed out the shavings, it felt a little better. The hydrocodone has done nothing but make my stomach upset. I live in a small town and oil of clove is not available (believe it, I have tried Walgreens, Walmart, you name it!) So I rinsed with salt water, used a syringe with warm salt water to clean out the socket, then rinsed with salt water again. Last, I rinsed with Peroxyl mouthwash for two minutes. So far, this is working and my pain is managed with over-the-counter ibuprofin and tylenol alternated every few hours. Good luck..this is a miserable condition and I hope you will have pain-free days soon!

The Red Corss toothache kit is a Godsend. Today July 26th. I had my tooth removed on July 22nd. I was fine for the first few days and then on Friday afternoon my tooth started to hurt. I knew from my previous tooth extraction what it was. Unfortunatly the dentist had already gone home. Today is Sunday and I happen to come across this site. My pain was a 10 out of 10. My head hurt nothing was helping. The medicine took about 3-4 minutes to fully kick in and I feel so so much better. It tastes nasty as all day if I got it on my toungue and back of my throat which burned like crazy, but a small Price to pay. Thanks all for englighten me on this Redd Cross Toothache medicine.!!

Just so everyone knows clove oil is hard to find, so its bascially the red cross tootache kit or the dentak emergency tooth kit which contain natural eugenol which is clove oil.I found it at walgreens it was worth the 3 am drive across town the pain was gone in 2 minutes I kid you not. Worth the six dollars!!! Try this it burns a bit but goes away.

I was in MASSIVE pain today! 3 days after having a molar extracted I was pretty sure I had a dry socket. I have never had one but have heard talk from others that have had it. My wife being the main one. She said she would go get me some clove oil. Well, I was not so sure about that so she and I did a search on it and she found this site and I started reading all the post and sure enough, plenty were singing it's praises. So she went to the drug store to get some and I started rinsing with warm salt water to flush the area good. She got back and I mixed a few drops with some water and applied it with a Q-Tip. Almost immediately I felt some relief!! So I waited a couple of minutes and applied some to a damp gauze and placed it in the space and bit down and left it there for 30 minutes. Guess what? PAIN FREE!! I am a firm believer now for sure! Just as others said, DO NOT use full strength as it will burn bad. (Got a small amount on the corner of my mouth and found this out...) She also said it could be mixed with olive oil as well since that was the way she did it years ago. I'm telling you, this stuff worked like a charm!

Thanks to everyone for your advice. I went and bought the first aid Eugenol your spoke of. I had preventative dental work done with a filling on my back molar. I was having no pain at the time. A few days later I developed an abcess. I had the tooth pulled on Monday and now I guess I have dry socket. The dentist keeps telling me it is just an abcess and to keep taking the antibiotics. I went for a second opinion at my doctor and switched to a much stronger antibiotic. The pain is excruciating, feels like I was hit in the face with a baseball bat. The narcotics only take the edge off of the pain. I don't sleep much because I cannot get the pressure and pain to ease at all. I just read your blog on home remedies and went to the drug store. I really just wanted to lay down in bed, but I figured I would try it. This is the first relief I have felt in days. Orajel only works for a few minutes. I believe this remedy will get me through until the socket heals and the antibiotic does its job. Thank you so much!! I think I would have ended up at the ER tonight if this did not work.

I bought a small bottle of clove oil (1/8 of an ounce is $5), used tweezers and the cotton I pulled off of a q-tip. It works wonderfully! Doesn't taste too great, and if you drip on your lip it burns, but numbs the socket quickly! And if you use the syringe with salt water, and a nasty smelling fluid comes out, you have an abcess.

Dry Socket - what a NASTY word and a painful one too! I (like everyone else here) had a wisdom tooth removed on 072309 and it is now 072909 and the pain is unbearable...went back to the dentist today (for the third time since last weeks extraction) and he told me that yes I have an infection and dry socket!!! Since last week I have taken percocests/extra strength ibuprofen and anti-biotics and no relief and no sleep! When I got home from the dentist today I started researching 'Dry Socket' and thankfully came across the Clove Oil Remedy...I immediately went to Shoppers Drug Mart (Canada eh - LOL) purchased this amazing little bottle for $5.00, had my husband put in two drops and felt relief within minutes...I wish I went to this site last week! Thank-you for posting this remedy it really does work!
Now my only other question now is when does this area go back to normal, do I need to stock up on Clove Oil??

Thank you so much for your posts about the Red Cross teethache Kit. This is god sent magic for me. I had tooth # 18 extracted Monday which a lower left molar. It was all good until Wednesday then the pain started with soreness then full on pain. The worst pain I have ever had it was 12 out of 10. I thought it was the bone graft that the OS put in the hole but started reading about dry socket after my dentist told me what he thought I might have. I did not sleep more than 2 or3 hours a night plus I was taking 2 vicodins and 2 advils every 3-4 hours. But the pain did not stop. I called the OS 5 times in three days begging him for something but because of the bone heft he said he can't use the gauze since it's a bone pain. He said to tough it out. What an aweful pain.
On Saturday I slept for 2 hours. The pain was so bad that tears were falling. My stomach was a mess because of all the meds plus the anti biotics I have GERD. At 4 am on saturday I found this blog but I was a skeptic. My girlfriend read it and went to CVS to buy it. I put it on and squeezed the cotton so it will drip around the bone graft after rinsing with salt water about 10am. The pain went away like magic within less than 5 minutes.
It is 6 pm now on Saturday and the pain is starting to come back lightly. I'll be using more in a few minutes. My OS called me in the morning to check on me around 9 am and I asked him if I should use this stuff and he said it will not hurt to try but he doubts that it will help much. Why do dentists and doctors like to give more and more pain killers while this amazing natural remedy exist that will not mess up our stomachs and floras.
I am going to put more in right now. Try it you won't be disappointed. Michael. Los Angeles ca

Wow..dry socket is like no other pain I have experienced. I had a 1/4 of my jaw removed ( 6 teeth, bone and gums)about 6 years ago and let me tell you dry socket is worse than that pain.
I saw the dentist and he packed with this 'stuff' and it helped the pain right away. I saw him twice and then the 'stuff' fell out and do not have an appointment for another three days so I googled and found this site..thank goodness. Here in Canada, I found clove oil at the Bulk Barn. and it is awesome for pain relief. I was able to sleep and then put some clove oil on a small piee of gauze and packed it in the hole for about 1 minute when I woke up 7 hours later. It lasted for another 3 hours or so and I was able to get up and not be distracted by the pain. Thank you to whoever put this site on web!!

Had my wisdom teeth pulled last Friday morning. All was pretty well until Sunday morning when I hit the floor like a dump truck. I was convinced I had dry socket. Went back to dentist on Mon morning, stated no dry socket, and gave me percicet on top of Ibuprofen. Pain had still been unbearable with meds. Meds only last about 2-2 1/2 hrs max. Went back this Wed, said piece of food debris was back there and now should feel some relief. NOTHING 4 HOURS LATER! Went to pharmacy, bought red cross dental kit, applied to socket area, and lo and behold, the FIRST FEELING of relief since this came on! Granted its only been 10 minutes as of this posting, however I'll take it! The problem is keeping it off of other tissue area. Impossible! Only burns for a minute or so though. Well worth it.

I had an impacted wisdom tooth removed a week ago today. 2-3 days after the procedure I had a coughing fit an coughed up a foul smelling clot, which was due to food being stuck back there but didn't have any unbearable pain that my pain killers wouldn't handle, so I paid no attention to it. The next morning I couldn't open my mouth AT ALL. So I went to my dentist and he said more than likely it was just irritation due to it being a very difficult extraction, and to take it easy on chewing and drinking. The pain killers were doing nothing and I was in constant severe pain, so a local Amish doctor told me to buy oil of clove, soak a cotton ball in it and stuff it into the socket. After the burning stopped, within 15 minutes my pain went from 10 to barely 1. This stuff really works! The stuff tastes HORRIBLE, and it lingers in your mouth for a good while, but the relief you get is well worth it. He did advise me however not to use this remedy day in and day out, it is very hard on your stomach, that it simply de-sensitizes the nerve endings and slows irritation so it can heal naturally. Dry sockets do take 3-4 weeks to heal completely, so to all of you dry socket victims, try this remedy, keep rinsing, eat soft foods, and hang in there!

I developed two dry sockets and was in extreme pain for over a week. They had me on vicodin and when that didn't work oxycodin which also didn't do much. I was getting less then 2 hours of sleep a night and was basicaly a mess.I ended up talking to a co-worker who specializes in home remedys and she told me to use gauze soaked in a 50/50 mix of clove oil and water and pack the socket. The relief was immediate and total. You'll have to switch it out once a day. It's amazing the difference and distressing that the dentists and doctors tend to keep this information from their patients. Good luck and take care!!

After exactly one week of severe discomfort, I looked up this information on the this web-site. The Red-Cross Toothache, found at CVS Stores, is a lifesaver. Caution, though; I tried the cotten pallets in the packet and it burned like a m'fer. I would advise using a q-tip and a little olive oil, with great caution. I went from severe pain to zero pain in about 1 minute after application. Excellent home remedy for dry sockets.

Clove oil or red cross toothache kit. Let me tell you red cross toothache kit is the way to go. I finally slept through the night. I couldn't take the pain killers because they made me sick but this site helped so much I can chew and not always be in pain.

I had excruciating, throbbing pain 5 days after getting all four wisdom teeth removed. My entire right side of my face was pulsing pain. Nothing was treating the pain and I was keeping up with all medications and followed my dentist instructions. I soon concluded I had DRY SOCKET. Worse than any pain I have ever felt. I cam across this website and in entire desperation ran to Hannafords to buy some clove oil. As soon as I got in I rinsed my mouth with salt and water combination as directed by my dentist. Then I mixed a few drops of clove oil into a few drops of water. I mixed it with a q-tip and applied a few drops to the wound. It didn't strike me as a giant hole like some people mentioned, just a fleshy wound. The taste was bad, but WELL WORTH IT. It dropped my pain by 95%. Even after I ate and rinsed with salt water again, the clove oil continued to do its job. I am 100% convinced that natural medicine is better than synthetic drugs. If you go to the dentist they would 'fill' the hole the same way you could by rolling a piece of gauze, dipping it in the oil/water mix and putting it in the hole (socket). But like I said, I don't see a socket, just a wound and just putting the oil on made a HUGE difference. PLEASE, if you are experiencing dry socket. DO THIS!!

I have never been one to try this stuff but last night I thought my recent Widsom tooth extraction was going to be the death of me. I was 4 days post op so I thought I was in the clear when yesterday about lunch time all heck broke loose. The pain was the most intense pain even worse than the pain the day of surgery. I looked this site up and saw that the Red Cross Toothache Kit was highly recommened. Trust me the $8 for the kit is so well worth it I would have paid so much more. Please dont hesitate to buy this product it is amazing. Today I put more in and it lasted me till lunch time. I just applied more and remember that I saw it here and should let others know of the success I had.

I had a minor dry socket after removal of upper wisdom tooth. Clove oil may give instand relief but base on my own experience ( twice dry socket ), rinsing the affected area with concentrated sea salt water would definitely help it to heal faster.
I rinsed and hold the salt water in mouth every 1-2 hours. Each time wait for 20-30 seconds before spitting out. After doing it for 2-3 days, I felt so much better and really pain free!

I haven't tried the clove oil, but I don't really need to. I had my two left molars extracted last Monday, and the lower site healed up and is looking quite good now, with only minimal tenderness. The upper site has been inflamed and in pain- around a 6 or so, for the last few days. I started taking 600mg of Advil every 6 hours when it started happening, and ingesting a lot of cannabis. I have slowed the Advil, but the cannabis is still my friend. The hole has not closed yet. A few days ago I got an aloe leaf from my front garden and cut out a bit of the soft tissue and stuck in on the dry socket. I no longer drain liquid from my nose whenever I rinse my mouth out, so the hole is closing. =) It also feels better today, but definitely not 100%. I recommend this to suppliment the clove oil remedy since a lot of folks seem to like it. I hate clove, so that one's a last resort and I don't need it, thank God! =)

I will save you the time of reading all the other entries below mine, they all say the same thing- buy the Red Cross Toothache kid and use the clove oil.
WELL- THEY ARE ALL RIGHT!!!!
I have a dry socket from a left lower molar extraction last TUESDAY! I read these entries, set down the laptop, drove five minutes to walgreens, and my pain - which was unbearable - is absolutely gone.
Here's the trick, though. Take a ball of gauze NOT COTTON, and soak it in the clove oil using tweezers. THEN squirt some orajel on the gauze and with the tweezers, stick it in the dry socket hole. Cram it in there, I can only tell you that your pain will immediately disappear.
Leave the gauze in until you call your dentist. It will save you hours of agony.

I had a very routine extraction of a partial tooth, right bottom side, small front molar, which was not causing me any problems at all before hand, on Tues. 4-7-09. Wedns. no problem, Thurs. no problem, Friday, woke up with a dull pain at the extraction site, Friday got worse during the day, the tooth next to the site was really sore to the touch or slight bite-down. Never having a dry socket before I thought that the tooth itself was going south on me. Sat., more pain but managable with Alieve. Sun, more pain, but still tolerable. Monday, starting to get to me pretty bad. Called the dentist office and the nurse tells me that I probably have a dry socket and to call back later if it gets any worse. I get on the internet and start 'looking into this', yep, I've got a dry socket alright. Went to Wallgreens last night on the way home from work and got the Red Cross Toothache kit, and man you guys were right, that dude worked great. Used it last night at 7:30pm and haven't had near the pain since. It is now 9:00am Tues. and it still feels pretty good. Thanks for the advice folks. Now, how long is it going to take until this dude heals up?

I got my wisdom teeth taken out on a Monday. I felt horrible pain from late Tuesday on. I thought it was only part of the healing process, and did not learn it was most likely a dry socket until I spoke to a friend on Friday who recently had one. Saturday morning I went out and bought some things. Now, on TUESDAY (just over a week after surgery) I am feeling much better and my dry socket is healing. Here is what I did to help ease the pain/heal the dry socket.
After every meal:
-Rinse out the socket with warm salt water. Use a small syringe to squirt the salt water into the socket. Do this until it is consistently clean and no food remains.
-Rinse with the salt water mixture.
-Rinse with Orajel Antiseptic Mouth Rise for Mouth Sores. It's in a white bottle and I found it at Walmart. Not completely necessary, but I diluted it with a little bit of water.
If Needed (for pain):
-I used the oil from the Red Cross Toothache Kit. I didn't use the tweezers and pellets, but dipped a Q-tip in, squeezed off the excess, and held it in place for a minute. Be careful not to get it anywhere else, as it stings and tastes bad. DEFINITELY helped with the pain. However, I wouldn't use it often.. only when necessary. I have read it can lengthen the healing process.
Anyway, I went to the doctor on Monday (a week after surgery) for a checkup and he couldn't believe that I had had a dry socket! He said it looked to be a week ahead of the healing process. However, I DID have one and I was in the most pain I had ever felt just two mornings earlier!!
Today (Tuesday), I am continuing my cleaning process. I have little pain (nothing an occasional advil can't handle), and it's almost caught up healing-wise to the other removal areas. I'm not sure if it's my cleaning process that is helping, or if my body is finally deciding to heal the dry socket, but I thought I'd post this in case anyone finds it helpful!

Clove oil does indeed work i have it in my dry socket as we speak. The cloved soaked gauze in the hole puts a little bit of a gross taste on your food you eat but at least you can eat. I could not even eat for 5 days the food used to set off the pain. But thank god this worked. I was taking demerol or torodol or advil for the pain but it only lasted for maybe 2 hours of relief and left me with a bad stomache but the clove oil thus far has kept me pain free for 2 days so hopefully it keeps working

I just had to comment and say that all the suggestions to get the Red Cross kit was a lifesaver! My poor mom just had 2 teeth pulled on friday, after one of her molar roots cracked and absessed. a bridge with two teeth was connected to that molar, and another tooth was affected. So, she had 2 pulled, 4 gone all together. Plus, they put more bone in to build it up for when they put in the dental implants down the road. She's only been taking advil, and has been very sore, but today she was in excruciating pain.... She mentioned that she thought she might have a dry socket, I googled 'dry socket pain relief' and came across this page. I immediately ran out and bought her the kit.
She is so thankful to all who suggested it here... within a moment after applying the oil she felt relief, she said it's a whole world of difference and highly recommends this to anyone suffering with a dry socket! She also said that she remembers that clove oil is what was always used to treat dry sockets when she worked in an oral surgery office.

Hello! I had all four wisdom teeth removed 12 days ago and one was very impacted. I went back after 3 days of hell and found out I have a dry socket. The dentist asst informed me that if they 'pack it' then it will take 3 times longer to heal than normal since the tooth can not heal with the packing in place. She suggested I go home and take vicodin for the weekend and it should 'get better' in a week. It's been a week and I am still in pain. Eating, my favorite past time, is no longer enjoyable and the salt water rinse has not helped at all. I am actually sick of hearing myself complain about the pain. Tonight I was desperate and did a half water half hydrogen peroxide rinse when caused major PAIN for me. All of my teeth were throbbing! I found this website and sped to Walgreens and bought the Red Cross Kit! The Eugenol was welcomed with open arms. It's been 5 mins, and the pain is about 90% better! I will be able to sleep, and maybe EAT :)

I had my very back bottom tooth extracted 2 weeks ago (this Thursday will be 3 weeks) and it still hurts. I came to this site after about a week of the pain of the 'dry socket' and it was AMAZING. I took the advice of the many & went and got the Red Cross Toothache Kit from Walgreens for roughly $7.00. WHAT A LIFE SAVER!! You all are the best!! I wouldn't have known what to do because my dentist wanted to re-numb my gums & scrae the bone to create another blood clot but that just didn't sound appealing to me, nor could I afford the procedure after shelling out the money to have the extraction to begin with. So... I went looking for alternative treatments & found this awesome site. I have been using the clove oil 'eugenol' for almost 2 weeks & it does provide the relief I need to get thru the day & sleep thru the night. At first, I was soaking gauze in it and stuffing it in there and leaving it for about 24 hours. Now, I am only putting a couple drops in it and it's lasting about 6 hours before I have to reapply. I'm hoping that since I'm nearing the 3 week mark, the pain/uncomfortable feeling will GO AWAY completely & I can put this awful experience behind me! This is the WORST pain I've ever been in and I've had 3 kids!! Thanks again for all the wonderful advice. You guys helped me ALOT!!

i had my wisdom tooth extraction above and below and dentist didnot give a suture too. i had a very bad dry socket . dentist packed with the eugenol gel couple of times and the pack came out by itself with in couple of hours and pain was okay for few hours and when i eat somethin the pain staryts though i donot chew on that side.i ate only soft foods. the best treatment i found is always wash the socket with angled syringe given by dentist with salt water at least 5 times immedietely after meal.do this in front of mirror so that u actually know the food particles coming out. then apply the red cross tooth ache liquid with the guaze( Small size) keep another guaze above it hold it by biting it for next 10 minutes .keep doing this when ever you have pain .this really works. salt water rising helps to heal the wound sooner.
hope this helps.

Ok so about a week and a half ago I had one of my wisdom teeth highly infected I took a little antibiotic and 3 days ago I had my 2 bottom wisdom teeth removed.. It was fine until 2 days later this AWFUL pain came back and spread to my other teeth face and ear! I went to my oral surgeon and he said its a dry socket. Whoopee. He put a dressing, small gauze with CLOVE OIL inside the socket and was told to go back in 2 days.... I screamed when they were putting it in but 10 minutes later WOW Byebye pain killers and I ate in happiness. I woke up in the morning with horrible pain again, so I decided to purchase the clove oil because not even Advil was helping. I took a q tip put it on the gauze that is in my tooth and relief once again! I will suggest if you don't have a dressing in your tooth to put the clove oil on a gauze and let it rest, or put it on a qtip an key it sit there. Yes it may test awful but SO worth it. I'm about to go shopping and get my nails done after days of aching pain!!

I would like to reiterate that Clove Oil (AKA Eucerin) works wonders for dry socket.
After two days of extreme pain, and the narcotics doing nothing, I finally researched my symptoms and decided to try clove oil.
It works well. I used 85% clove oil and it did a great job. I'm not sure how much better 100% is.
I called my oral surgeon and he said that he would treat dry socket in a very similar manner.
1) Use Eucerin
2) Apply it to gauze (I used cotton pellets)
3) Leave it in for a few minutes and then remove (my directions say keep it in for one minute)

I love this web site. After getting a lower molar removed 5 days ago, the pain has gotten progressively worse. Today is Sunday so getting back to the dentist is probably not an option. I read about the clove oil remedy suggested by many here. I called a couple of drug stores and none had it. Then an idea hit me. I had just recently stocked my spice cabinet with whole cloves to make a ham on NYE. I took some of them and used a mortar and pestle to grind the cloves. I then put a little water in the mash and ground some more to make a sort of paste. I stuck the paste in the molar socket and no more pain. The pastes stays in there pretty well. I have a clove taste in my mouth but I like the tastes of cloves. It's really working marvelously well!

Believe it about clove oil, the stuff works. Saved my sanity.
Another simple thing that I haven't seen here yet that really helped me was simply swishing water around in my mouth around the dry socket. It might sting at first, but after 10 seconds the pain would go away. The relief was limited, only about a minute or two, but then I would just swish again.
For days now I've carried around water bottles, sometimes swishing every 2 minutes for hours on end. I would either swallow the water or spit it out.
Considering that the pain from dry socket comes from the bone drying out, it makes sense that water would help.
It seems to work even better with gauze packed into the socket, and letting that get soaked as well.
I hope this helps someone.

I just had a lower molar removed today & after my experience last year with dry socket (suffered for 3 weeks before checking this site out), I am stocked up on clove oil. Sanitize a pair of tweezers to get out any food particles & gently rinse with warm sea salt water.I mixed about half a shot glass of olive oil w/20 drops of clove oil to make the taste more mild and apply to socket with a Q-tip. Works wonders!! All I can do now is wait 2-5 days and hope it spares me this time!! Also try to avoid dairy..

Absolutely amazing!!! I too developed dry socket a couple of days after having all four wisdom teeth extracted. The red cross toothache kit has saved me from another night of dreadful pain. It is literally the same thing they gave me at the dentist!!! Try it! Thank you to all who posted before me!!

What you are reading- it's true! I had my wisdom tooth extracted on Monday was doing fine, just a little sore by Wednesday and Thursday. Friday I was in discomfort and by Saturday I was in so much pain it was unbearable! I had pain radiating along my jaw, and such throbbing, intense, searing pain that would wake me up at 4 AM! Advil or Tylenol X-tra strength no longer alleviated my pain.
I thought I was loosing my mind, as I felt that I was getting WORSE not BETTER as the week went on!
I Googled my symptoms and found this website. I read the remedies, went to my local health food store and got a bottle of clove oil, saturated cotton portion of an end of a cotton Q-tip and packed that cotton into the hole........ OMG! AMAZING! The pain went COMPLETELY away in a matter of minutes!
ATTENTION: The clove oil DOES sting and numb areas. Just be aware! Like when you shake too many red pepper flakes on your pizza.
Take your time when placing the saturated cotton in your mouth. If you accidentally get the clove oil on your lips or tongue or swallow it, it will taste somewhat nasty but the numbness does go away in a few moments. This momentary discomfort is SOOOO worth the hours and days of normalcy and bliss.
I am so grateful to all the people who posted and shared their stories and made it possible for me to find this terrific solution!

I got my upper wisdom teeth removed a week ago. I'm a smoker and didnt want to wait the 5 days to start smoking again. I started only 5hrs after the extraction, just one, than wait 24hrs after that and started smoking regularly. I used Blistex Lip Medex lip balm, just dip a small piece of gaze (big enough to cover the open area) in the Lip Medex and put over the hole. I did this EVERYTIME I smoked and than gently rinsed with sea salt and warm water. The Lip Medex also helped the hole twice as fast. I recommend this to everyone, smoker or non smoker. It helps to keep the clot moist and in place.

It was midnight when I realized my daughter had dry socket. I read this website but didn't have any clove oil, so I checked my spice cabinet. I mixed a tiny bit of ground clove with water, pulled off the end of a Q-tip, balled it up, soaked it in the solution and put it in the socket with tweezers.
Within 2 minutes the pain was gone. IT'S MAGIC. Vicodin hadn't touched it.
Thanks for the wonderful info.

The Red Cross Toothache kit from Walgreens is again, worth every penny (699 of them to be exact!). So my girlfriend had 3 of her wisdom teeth taken out about two weeks ago and we did everything exactly as the surgeon told us to, but of course, the slim odds were against us and she got dry socket tonight. I didn't know what to do for he so she decided to take two Ibuprofen 800's and a Vicoden! So needless to say she was drugged on our way to Walgreens tonight. So we get home and she gets the warm water, a spit cup, and the syringe as I opened the miracle kit. I poured just a little bit of the clove oil in the water (gross is stunk so bad!), and started to follow the: ' Clean ou the area really well, submerse cotton balls in the water mixture, and submerse gauze in the water' and within seconds (with a nasty face from the taste of the oil), she was better and snoring like a baby. Now I just hope she wakes us in the morning!

I'm in my third week of suffering from dry socket. I tried clove oil soaked in gauze and packed into the socket. For the first few days this helped, but by day 4 it was ineffective. I've been to the Dentist on 2 occasions and had the socket packed with gauze soaked with a brown paste, it didn't help at all. I've been taking solpadol 1000mg every 4 hours and ibuprofen 800mg 2 hours later. This has helped control the pain and is all that I'm using at present. A big mistake that I made based on advice from a work colleague that said it helped her son was washing the socket by swirling cold water around my mouth. Initially the pain went away but after a few minutes it turned into the worst pain I have ever had, with tears running down my face. I also found that washing the socket with warm salt water made the pain worse.
I live in the UK and have been unable to find some of the over the counter remedies that are available in other countries, like the first aid kit.
On a positive note by week 3 the pain is less intense and I think that the worst is over.

I was reading the remedies for dry socket last night whilst in agony. 2 days post extraction the one side of my mouth was so sore, I have had 3 kids, and this was the worst thing ever!! Reading all your ideas about oil of cloves was great but at 11pm and being in NZ had no means of getting this stuff. Managed to see a dentist this morning, she dressed the socket with what she described as 'horsemanure' but did the trick immediately. A wonder, tastes of xmas a litte so definitely had the clove oil in it, instant relief, finally!

I had my wisdom teeth extracted on Thursday and I was warned of dry socket. I thought I did everything right, I didn't rinse until 24 hours after, didn't use a straw, lightly brushed, but I still didn't avoid it.
Starting yesterday I started feeling a dull throbbing pain then today it was much worse. Luckily I found this site and bought the Red Cross Toothache Kit which worked wonders. It didn't make the pain go away completely, but it definitely helped and will hold me over until tomorrow morning when I see the dentist for my follow up appointment.
Try to avoid getting it on your tongue, it has a nasty taste and it takes awhile for it to go away.

I recently had an extraction, followed by a dry socket. The Red Cross Toothache kit worked wonders. But I still had pain issues.A Walgreens pharmacist gave me some advice which helped me out a great deal.First, use a rinse from Oral B called Amosan. It's an oral wound cleanser it's fantastic, I don't know why my Dentist never said anything about it. For pain he recommended 'ibuprofen', I used Advil 200mg liquid gels. He said you can safely take up to 1600mg a day I took 2 pills every 6 hours (don't wait for the pain) I then packed my extraction with the Red Cross toothache kit. This procedure worked wonders for me, I was able to sleep more than 4 hours in a row for the first time in a week. I hope this helps someone.

I just had an absessed tooth pulled on Wednesday the day I actually left for vacation and these last couple days I have been in more pain than having the tooth ache itself! I read about the red cross toothache kit, I drove to walgreens because at this point I was taking hydrocodone every three hours and it still wasnt helping my pain. I just got done using it and it worked GREAT! I was worried because it said not to put it on tissue but I stuck it right in there thinking I may have a dry socket! The pain I feel now is just a little tension which is hardly noticeable! The stinging goes away and I was trade the sting for a minute than deal with this throbbing any longer!!! Thank you everyone who posted somehthing about it!!! It worls WONDERS!!!

I had 2 terribly impacted wisdom teeth removed 13 days ago(on March 21). I have been thru 2 antibiotics(Augmentin and Cephalexin), 2 bottles of Vicadin(no relief), currently Darvocet(takes the edge off), and 4 packings(twice by dentist and twice by oral surgeon who performed the extractions). The surgeon's packings gave me more relief, so I called him to ask if he could send me some more packings to do at home myself(he's 2 hours away). He informed me that the meds. lose their strength over time so mailing/shipping was not an option. But, he said to call my pharmacy and ask for Eugenol, the active ingredient in the paste that he uses. I called CVS Pharmacy, who didn't have it on hand, but will order it for availability tomorrow. It costs $8.50, and you just put 1(one) drop into the socket. He also told me if I couldn't find Eugenol, to get clove oil/oil of cloves, and again, one drop into socket. After I get and try the Eugenol tomorrow, I will post my results.

Everything that everyone here says is TRUE. I am a skeptic when it comes to these types of 'home cures' but I have been suffering with a dry socket from a root extraction since Friday (today is Monday) and I got to a point today where I didn't think I could stand the pain a second longer. I googled home remedy dry socket and mercifully was led to this page. I bought the dentek toothache remedy at Walgreens on my way home and within seconds...SECONDS of using it, the excruciating, radiating pain was GONE. Every now and again I get a dull ache that lets me know it is still there - but NO PAIN. I can relax for the first time in over 48 hours. I have an appt with my dentist tomorrow but I know I will sleep comfortably tonight and that is a miracle. Vicodin did nothing but make me sick - this is the best cure!

I had a lower wisdom tooth extracted a week ago today. The procedure itself and the first 48-72 hours thereafter went relatively smooth with minimal pain. Then, it started. I'm talking 9.5 to 9.75 on a pain scale of 10. Went back to the Dentist on day 4. He suggested that I was on the tail end of the worst of it and I could either stick it out for another 24-48 hours. Or, he could deliberately stir things up in the socket (which has obviously been missing the clot since day one), start the bleeding all over, and try to create a new clot. I opted for the wait-n-see approach. Not good... By day 6, I was not sleeping at all. Involuntary tears were seeping out of my eyes from the extreme pain and the pain killers were useless. Called my dentist today and he suggested that I wait another 3-4 days to see him or go see an oral surgeon today (neither a good option). Thank God for this forum and the people who contribute to it. I went to my local health food store & purchased a small 0.5 ounce bottle of Clove Oil for $6 bucks & some change. For those interested, the brand was 'Aura Cacia', description is 'Clove Bud 100% Pure Essential Oil.' I just cleaned out the socet with warm salt water, used a toothpick to carefully clear out any food particles, dabbed a few drops of the oil on a Q-Tip and gently messaged the socket with it. Yes, the taste is strong and you will salivate like Pavlov's dog but the pain subsided and disappeared within 2-3 minutes. About 8 hours later, I just repeated the process because I was starting to feel the pain creeping back. Bam! - squashed the pain & its gone!!! I am not sure I will need to mess with creating a pack of gauze or cotton as some have suggested but if the oil soaked Q-Tip doesn't work for you, try it.

This not a home remedy for dry socket gut it is a very hElpful solution that your dentist knows about. It's called Triamcinolone Acetonide 0.1% Dental paste. Have your dentist prescribe it for you. It seals the hole stops the pain and reduces the imflamation with no bad after taste. Too good to be true right. My dentist gave me a scrip instead of packing it everyday and it is great. Don't take no for an answer make him give it to you instead of giving you DRY POCKET from the money you have to pay him or her. CHECK IT OUT

The very best treatment I have found for 'dry scoket' is a product called Canker-X . Just put it in or around the scoket and wait about 3 min. I have had the pain for about 3 weeks now with no help from dentist packing or heavy meds. I also tried the red cross tooth ache stuff. It burns really bad and its hard to put on your scoket without getting everything else in your mouth on fire. I even mixed it with olive oil and water. It didn't help the pain, just gave me more.
Go buy Canker-X it really worked for me.

Yea I would agree with you. I also got dry socket on one of my wisdom teeth but once i realized the stiches disolved I noticed food got stuck in my gums. The food that was stuck gave me more pain and bad breath emminating from the socket becasue I got dry socket. I rinsed gently but it didnt take the stuck food out. So i began to rinse vigorisly with very warm water until the pieces of food came out. (rinsing with cold water did not work) I was surpirsed how much junk I had stuck there. It gave me relief when i got the smelly pieces of food out. I also used water and diluted listerene. I went to the dentist and he asked me if I had pain. I told him it was very minimal and an over the counter pill would relieve it. My dentist advised me he thought it was going to be worse and just added some gel to begin heeling. He told me I had dry socket. I reasearched it and it seems everybody that had dry socket had severe pain. So if you just rinse AND MAKE SURE FOOD DOESNT GET STUCK then u would avoid infection/pain. After my wisdom teeth were pulled I was advised i could eat solids after a few days. If I went through it again I would only eat yogurt, non sugar jello, country chix noodle soup (non cunky type), only soups, protein shakes, fruit shakes, banannas, just eat very soft foods, i would avoid any type of meat or bread!!!

After reading this great website, I decided to do the clove ball. I was hurting bad, didn't have any clove oil and the night was going to be rough. So, I crushed up some cloves from the spice rack, added some extra virgin olive oil, (just a tad), and soaked up the cutip ball with it. Cleaned out the socket as best I could, and put in the ball. Yup. I am so much more comfortable now. phew! Tomorrow, I will go get some oil but just for the night, the crushed cloves worked just fine. Thanks for the help. I really needed it.

I had two teeth pulled on Tuesday and by Friday night I had a dry socket. I had a dry a couple of years ago and went by to my oral surgeon and he packed it with cloves. I went to this website tonight and read about clove oil. I went to Walmart to get some and of course they did not have it, we live in a small town so no drug store was open at midnight so I bought some ground cloves and mixed olive oil with in and got a small piece of a cotton ball and dip it in the oil and put in my dry socket and got relief immediately. Thanks for this website

Please do NOT try to treat a dry socket by rinsing the area with ANYTHING! If you rinse the area you will end up washing away the things your body is trying to accumulate in that area to form a blood clot. The absence of this protective dry socket is what is causing you to feel intense pain. The BEST solution is to visit the dentist who extracted your tooth and allow them to dress the area.Until that time take over the counter pain meds. This appt is usually of no charge.
