I have been doing some research; Angular Cheilitis is a fungus and is going to take up where there is an opportunity for it to get a start and to thrive. Antifungal creams like Monostat work well because they are design to penetrate into tissue and kill the fungus. Oils, ointments and other types of creams will have moderate success simply because it will disrupt the desirable PH that fungus need in order to thrive and/or cut off oxygen to the fungus. Fungus is somewhat difficult to kill, think about athlete’s foot, you must use the medication frequently and persistently for a few weeks to insure you have truly eradicated the infection entirely. Like athlete’s foot, it would be infectious and it would be a good idea to sanitize or replace chap sticks, lip balms, lipsticks and toothbrushes, etc. There are prescription oral antifungal medications available too.

im a 21 year old female and having this was absolutely horrid! for the first week or so i thought it was a cold sore so automatically i started using my cold sore cream...and it got worse :( and eventually spread to the other side too!

The worst part of all was i was leaving for mexico in 5 days! ughh.
so i did the whole doctor thing, she gave me a prescription for that anti-fungal cream. that did absolutely nothing!
by now i was freaking out and it was sooo sore and in the mornings was the worse (cracking, bleeding, hard to eat stuff, no yawning etc).
so i came across this site and followed one of the highest rated remedies as i was getting desperate!

Here Is What Worked For Me:

-Anti bacterial soap
-Q tips
-Mens After Shave containing denatured alcohol.....I Used an aftershave called 'Brut' from shoppers drugmart $7.00
-vaseline!
-patience!

----> Clean whole mouth area including lips with the antibacterial soap, pat gently with a clean towel to dry or kleenex if you may. DON'T RUB OR IT MAY SPREAD. Now take a clean small bowl, spray the aftershave in to create enough for the Q-tip to get wet. Apply to the affected areas. (Warning it does burn but its highly effective and worth it). Once You Have Cleaned The area and applied the alcohol, carefully not to use the same tip twice, apply vaseline all over your lips and cracks. This prevents the bacteria from spreading and no moisture to get in. Apply Morning and Night.

I hope this works for you, as it cleared mine up in 2 days, Just in time for my vacation!

cheers, ashley

Some days before I was searching for home remedies for Angular Cheilitis but it feels good now im writing a remedy myself :)

Ok, many of you wont believe it but it really worked for me, I had Angular Cheilitis for quite a few weeks but it wasn't just going away, I researched and tried many of the remedies but none of them worked. The only thing that helped me is after shave splash, it has a touch of alcohol, i just scratched the affected area (right side of my mouth/lips) with a ear bud after dipping it in after shave Gillette splash and applied it twice daily, and the infection completely got away in 5 days :D . For those who doesn't know that you might scream like anything on applying as it contains denatured alcohol or stearate citrate to prevent infection and it closes the pores so no further irritation from bacteria and they can't spread.

This might not work for all but worth trying as its quite an easy one, almost everyone would have a aftershave splash and an ear bud at home :)

Ok, so my symptoms were very serious. My lips were inflamed all the time, cracking, peeling, drying out and lesions almost every week. I tried all types of lip balms, almost everyone on the market. With no help solving the bacterial infections, I ventured to out side sources, hydrocortisone wasn't working, nor was any type of lip balm. So her is what I found after paying 50$ for a 'kit'. It seriously saved my lips. The embarrassment was more than enough to make me try this, and after few sessions, I found that the lesions worked.
First get Antibacterial dishwashing soap. Any type of over the counter dishwashing soap as long as it is ANTIBACTERIAL, lemon works well.

Second some Vaseline or petroleum.

Third some non alovera tissues for blowing your nose.

Third. Vitamin b.

First get a extremely clean bowl, wash it out and fill with warm water. Soak your lips in the bowl for a half minute to a minute to get the lesions to open up and become soft tissue. Make sure they are damp.

Wash your hands and then the bowl with the antibacterial soap.

Take your Clean washed hands and apply about a pennies worth of the antibacterial soap to your index fingers and start to wash your wet lips with it, the lesions will open up. Start a good lather on around your lips taking about a half minute to a minute on each lip, and really work your lips. Be gentle but still make sure to thoroughly lather them up.

leave your lips with the lather on and wash your hands thoroughly to get all of the bacteria off you hands, really make sure the bacteria/fungus on you hand are all off. Use warm to hot water.

Them take your clean bowl, fill with warm to hot water, but nothing that will burn you or hurt your face and wash of the soap. Make sure to get it all off. Take your time, wash them really well.

Then re washes your hands to get off that bacteria, thoroughly.

Take the Clean tissues and dab your lips and mouth area, use as many as you need to but DO not use the tissue more than one dab, this why you have a box. Be generous with the tissues since you have a lot of them.

You will feel your lips tighten up; this will make them feel clean, almost totally tight. This is good, it means that your lips are clean of bacteria.

Now take the Vaseline, petroleum jelly, and apply to your lips. This makes the bacteria that was once there, not be able to get air to it .no air= no place for the bacteria to grow. Be generous but not too much, do what you think is ok.

Now let that sit for 2 hours. Do what ever you need to do and then after the 2 hours wipe off the Vaseline with some tissues. This will make the bacteria not be able to grow on your lips and mouth area.

Do this process one more time. It will take about 4 hours or so. But it will totally help. It worked wonders for me.

Now the b12 vitamins are to supplement the lack of b12 that kills off the bacteria, angular cheltis is a lack of b12 in the system, or from what I have heard it is. Now take the vitamin everyday and repeat this process many times as you feel necessary, like me I repeated a few times a weeks for over month. The first time for mild cases should do the trick, but if you are like me and have extremely red sore unhealthy lips. This could take a while.
But it seriously worked for me. I have the occasional outbreak of bacteria, but it is in what I eat. I stay away from alcohol, yeasts, bread and cheese. It kind of sucks but it is what I need to do to keep my lips respectable, not embarrassing and to bearable to eat burritos.

I paid 50$ or well my dad paid this, to help me get over it. The pdf file was kinda worth all of this knowledge.I pass it on to you, cause I know how it feels to be looked at and judged by this.

Good luck. And you are not alone.

Gone in three days! I had angular cheilitis for about a month before I decided that my lips weren't just chapped. After reading up on the condition online for a bit I decided on a course of action.
I started taking multivitamins immediately. I also used some ointment called Campho-Phenique (with drying action), which is made by Bayer (you can find it at drug stores). It's a pain reliever and antiseptic gel that is generally used for cold sores and fever blisters. Whereas most of the lip gels I looked at had only a teeny-tiny amount of camphor and phenol (both of which are analgesics and antiseptics), the Campho-Phenique gel had about twenty times as much.
I also used Carmex, mostly during work when I was too busy to use the cold sore gel.

Anyways, recap:
*Wash the affected area with anti-bacterial soap before applying anything.
*Cold sore gel works well, but make sure to get something with antiseptic properties; also READ THE LABEL for whatever you buy.
*Use Vaseline or Carmex (has petroleum jelly in it)
*Take multivitamins. I have a history of iron deficiency so I also took iron pills along with the vitamins.
*Ibuprofen helps ease the pain and reduces swelling.
*Talk to a doctor or a pharmacist. And a lot of insurance companies have triage nurses you call about health questions.

For any questions, just comment :)

Had angular cheilitis for months, tried all sorts of creams: antibiotic, antifungal, and cortisone. I mixed them together and applied often. Nada. Refused to pay $67 for some home remedy. FINALLY tried applying rubbing alcohol with a Qtip, being careful not to use the same side on both sides of my mouth several times a day. I followed up with a generic anti-fungal containing clortrimezol. It was labeled 'for jock-itch' : ) Anyway, in four days the alcohol no longer stung and after 6 days, my skin was clear and smooth.

I have had occasional outbreaks of Angular Cheilitis over the years. Usually it’s no big deal. I just wait a few days, and my body heals itself. On the most recent occasion, it got progressively worse over a two week period. I tried a number of remedies I found on the net (sodium bicarbonate, detergent & Vaseline, lip balm, hydrocortisone, Neosporin etc) without any success at all. Finally gave my ‘cure-all’ miracle cream a go, better known as SUDOCREM. It’s a well known product in Europe (most commonly used for nappy/diaper rash, but can also be used for cut, scrapes, burns + lots more), and can be difficult to get hold of in the US. It contains anti bacterial as well as antifungal agents in a water repellent base. Anyway, to cut a long story short, applied this to the sore, twice a day for 3 days and am now completely healed.

Ive tried the anti fungal cream, with polysporin at night..i woke up and the lesion was actually worse! I tried the tea tree oil with Vitamin E oil (from the capsules), nothing changed. Ive tried basically every remedy listed here, and while i dont have the deep cuts or anything, my lips are always dry and i have a little red mark (lesion) on one side that just will not go away to save my life. I havent cut back on bread, which i do eat a lot of..so i will be trying that next. Again, i dont have the deep cuts really, just the embarrassing legion/red mark. I do know the difference between a cold sore and this, just to put that out there lol. My derm even gave me some cream for it, yet nothing..anyone have any suggestions for me? Usually i just let it be and a few months later it goes away, but i have a hot date this weekend and am desperate....

I didnt know I had angular cheilitis until I googled it, I thought I suffered from coldsores but that wasnt the case.

To get rid of the small sore I:
1. leave crack dry up into a small scab, dont play with it and whenever you wash make sure it is dried straightaway, bacteria grow in wet conditions

2. when a small scab has formed, apply germolene or savlon to it throughout the day and before bed, it should be gone in 2 to 3 days

I had angular cheilitis for pretty much a month straight. I thought it was the heat and the dry air and maybe the sun too, but regardless, it just wouldn't go away even when I put chapstick on all the time. I didn't even know that I had angular cheilitis until I googled my symptoms because they just wouldn't subside.

Mine wasn't so bad, I got the cuts in the corners of my lips that were irritating to me but there weren't any blisters or sores. My lips got inflamed and swollen. It looked sort of like I had collagen injected.

Anyway, I tried blistex but it made my lips feel better but didn't heal the problem. The corners would re-crack almost every morning. I read that this is usually caused by bacteria or fungus, so I thought if I could heal the cracks I could prevent the infection from continuing to go inside my body. I assumed that any infection I had still inside my lips could be fought off if I kept my immune system strong. It worked. This is what I did:

1. I took B complex vitamins (I heard it could be a deficiency of B vitamins, I already take a multi)

2. I put polysporin (triple antibiotic ointment) on the corners of my lips. I made sure it was covering the cracks and went to bed with that on. If I woke up in the night I put on more and made sure the ointment sealed the crack, so there was no part of it exposed to the air.

3. I put hydrocortisone (1%) on the rest of my lips at night, to reduce the inflammation and sooth. It also dried up the dead skin on my lips which I could scrape off in the morning. During the day, I alternated polysporin and hydrocortisone on the corners of my lips to cover the cracks, and moisturize so the corners couldn't re-crack.

4. I put blistex on when my lips felt dry.

I started this Friday night, and was cured by Sunday morning. What a relief after dealing with this for so long!

I had angular cheilitis for 3 weeks straight. Both of my mouth corners had cuts that would crust and reopen everyday when I open my mouth. Applied Canesten/Vagasil clotrimazole cream for a week but didn't help much so I started taking a daily multivitamin for another week but it didn't heal.

I then switched my multivitamin to a vitamin B complex, and immediately the next day the cuts didn't open up when I open my mouth to eat and it healed itself after 4 days of taking the new supplement.

I examined the labels and my multivitamin/[B-complex] had 6.7mg/[50mg] B1, 8.3mg/[50mg] B2, 33.3mg/[50mg] Niacin, 10mg/[50mg] B6, 67mg/[50mg] Pantothenic Acid, 133mcg/[400mcg] Folic Acid, 100mcg/[50mcg] biotin, and 2mcg/[50mcg] B12.
So it's highly possible the multivitamin didn't have enough B-vitamins. I recommend taking a B-complex pill instead.

I recently had chelitus and i can honestly say it was horrible and it affected my confidence in a big way.
I saw the doc and she gave me a steroid cream called Daktacort Hydrocortosone cream and applyed this 3x a day for a week. The chelitis itself took about 10 days to go down but after i was left with extremly sore lips. The burning sensation was horrible and they were flaking so much it was embarassing. I tried applying vaseline every couple of hours but i found this didnt help and often made them dry out more. I went back to the doctor who said this was a common symptom after chelitus and he offered me nothing. I found a lip balm called Blistex Moisturising- this litrelly sorted me out in a couple of hours. I cannot reccomend this enough for the aftermath of this horrible infection!
A few tips i did to get rid of chelitus which i think helped...
*changed my toothbrush
*changed to a natural toothpaste (i found my current one was making me sting)
*Apply DAKTACORT
*Afterwards use Blistex

My infection was pretty bad and luckally i am back to my usual self. I understand what its like and hope this helps anyone who has this now.

I was struggling with this problem for a while. I tried a bunch of different ways to get it to heal with cortisone, different anti-fungals etc. From what I've learned about this problem is that it is caused by fungus, and can also be accompanied by a bacterial infection. I believe I developed this problem because I was drooling in the corners of my mouth occasionally during sleep. I've read that other people have developed the same problem from drooling. I believe I have the absolute best way to heal this problem. It involves dietary therapy and a really good topical that works great. The best way to heal the problem is through your diet. Yeast lives best on sugars, and I've found that by reducing them healing is greatly increased. In my case the dietary change was absolutely essential, without it there was no success. Here are some guidelines to help starve the yeast.
1. Avoid all sweeteners like sucrose, fructose, cane sugar, brown rice syrup, beet sugar, glucose.
2. Greatly reduce intake of grains during healing. Especially refined grains like white rice, or white flour.
3. Avoid fruit juice as they are high in sugar. Eat the whole fruit as the fiber will help reduce a spike in blood sugar.
4. Avoid alcohol especially beer and wine because they contain yeast.
5. Avoid other fermented foods, yogurt is ok.
6. eat mostly fresh fruits and vegetables, good protein like fish, chicken, turkey, avoid red meat.

Next I found a great topical ointment that works for both bacterial and fungal infections so will take care of both problems if both exist. It is very similar to a moisturizer so it can be put on several times a day but can't be noticed. The stuff is a little expensive but lasts a long time. It works really well for helping heal acne too. It is called Emugency first aid spray their website is

If you do what I said above it will work. Let me know about your success.

I've been bothered with this condition for years, and didn't even know what it was called till recently. I had tried everything on it.
After looking on a lot of medical websites, it seemed the consensus by numerous professionals was that angular cheilitis is a form of a yeast infection.
I looked in my medicine cabinet, and going totally against the flow, I put on the only thing I had in there for yeast infections....Monistat cream.
I knew it was working the next morning when I woke up, yawned, and it didn't split open.
This is not some sort of joke, this honestly worked for me, and I am so thankful. I have dealt with this for over 20 years, and I remember my Grandfather having it his entire life. I will never have to deal with it again - it worked!

So I had Angular Cheilitis on one corner of my mouth for about three months before I found this remedy. Before I had taken prescription medicine and it didn't work. I had tried all sorts of things such as letting it dry out and keeping chapstick on it. I was getting really embarrassed and sick of nothing working.

Anyway, so this is what I did. I purchased Lotrimin AF (antifungal), Polysporin, and Nature's Bounty Super B-complex daily vitamins. Probably about $25 in all. I cleaned out the corner of my mouth with plain water and then dried it completely. I rubbed in the Lotrimin, making sure to get it in all the crevices. Immediately after, I coated it with the Polysporin. I probably did this every morning and night and about five times during the day. After 24 hours, the skin was starting to heal. After 48, it was mostly gone. I'm not sure if the B-complex vitamin helped or not; I was just desperate to get rid of it, so I decided to cover all of my bases. I eat nutritional meals so I doubt the vitamin had much of an impact, in my case anyway.

Basically, I am thrilled with how this remedy turned out. I know exactly what to do if this condition reappears. Hope this helps.

I am an angular cheilitis sufferer for year and a half. I came up with this remedy which really helped me. It's simple. I washed my lips with alchohol (any) every night before going to bed and then applied pure petroleum jelly. This really helped me to almost cure my cheilitis. Also have B complex vitamins and B-100 to ward it off completely. I hope this information will help cheilitis sufferers.

Hello! I reviewed this website because this is the first time that I have had this condition, and I have put together several cures based upon the remedies listed here. What I have found that works the best is this: Dab some apple cider vinegar on the corners (it will sting) and then immediately coat your lips and the corners entirely with Vaseline (petroleum jelly) or Carmex (recommended by my pharmacist for this condition). It is absolutely essential that you coat your lips with one of these two balms because it has to seal in the apple cider vinegar and prevent saliva or additional bacteria from infecting. I think people keep having no results because they don't seal in the treatment. The reason apple cider vinegar is ideal is because it is BOTH an anti-bacterial AND an anti-fungal treatment. So, if you aren't sure which infection you have, this will nail it. If you use an anti-fungal cream alone, I believe that this may work alone because the cream is thick and is designed to seal in the treatment and seal out the environment. But if you use natural treatments like ACV, baking soda, alcohol or tea tree oil, you must seal it in with one of the 2 balms listed above. Good luck!

I had this for a couple of months and tried different things. I got to the point I was putting diaper rash cream on the split corners to soothe them because I was desperate. I started putting vinegar on the corners of my mouth as often as I could, 6-7 times a day, and finally this killed the fungal infection and I haven't had a recurrence. It stings but vinegar works!!!! It's recommended for other fungal infections, like athlete's foot, so of course it will work if yours is a fungal infection.

have been having this problem for several months. I just thought it was from the winter months but it didn't go away.. Or it would go away and come back soon after.
I tried every lip balm, cream, Neosporin, etc… The only thing that I have found that works is Palmer’s coco butter in the tub. I put it on several times a day and it worked for me.
I looked it up on google and found out that it could be a lack of vitamin B. Surprised that I would be vitamin B deficient, I started taking a liquid vitamin B complex and it is all cleared up. I also started taking a liquid multi-vitamin and mineral supplement. My face now is a lot clearer in general.

If the cheilitis is fungal in nature (even if it's bacterial) the condition should be treated internally as well as topically. Thus, follow an anti fungal diet as much as possible: no refined sugar, breads, yeast, no dairy, alcohol (sorry), candies and most importantly no dairy; lots of fresh greens, whole grains, no dairy; meat is okay.

Definitely take pro-biotics. I find spirulina in conjunction with pro-biotics does amazing things for fungus. You can also take a psyllium husk to clean the dead fungus out of of your colon. Silver colloidal is also anti-fungal and can be applied topically. I live in NY so I go to the Chinese herbal stores and use a non staining, cheap tincture that is very effective on a nail fungus I get sometimes. It is amber in color. It works better than anything else topically.

The anti-fungal diet takes a few days to show effects but will help any condition or at least wont hurt. One can simply research anti-fungal diets for more complete info. Cheers.

Lastly, if you can handle it, a short water-only fast, even just 3 days, will kill off most fungi as well as a whole lot of other nasty toxins buried in your system.

Cheers again!

I used a combination of the other items posted here.
My symptoms were deep cuts in both corners of my mouth and small bumps/lesions that started spreading from those corner cuts onto the skin around my mouth.
I washed the corners of my mouth with antibacterial soap twice a day and covered the corners with Aquaphor (which is a thick lotion similar to Vaseline). I used Blistex (the ointment, not the balm) on my lips. I used Neosporin (a topical antibiotic) on the skin around my mouth. Neosporin is not meant to be eaten, so don't use it on your mouth!
I also started taking a good multi-vitamin in case it was a lack of vitamins causing the problem. I used GNC Women's Ultra Mega vitamin in case this was caused by a lack of vitamins.
This cleared up all symptoms in several days.
The skin around my mouth really itched while it was healing. If that's really bothering you, a hydrocortizone cream would probably help.

I have had angular cheilitis for about a year. Tried many remedies (home and prescription) without good results. Finally bought several lip sticks (chap lip sticks) and one worked overnight. It is CARMEX (original) (moisturizing lip balm) a sunscreen, SPF15. I found these at Walgreen and also Walmart. My lips felt better the first time I applied it, within a few hours the dry skin peeled off my lips, overnight the inside of my lips peeled. The redness at the corners of my mouth faded gradually within 6 or 7 days. I continue to use this, applying it several times a day. Remember this is a
chap stick type product by CARMEX. My lips began feeling better within an hour or two of initial application. Also, be sure to brush teeth at bedtime.
Simple and effective.

Initially a multivitamin with B complex vitamins helped but the symptoms came back after I went on vacation and could not sleep well and had icecream, dessert pies etc. It really got aggravated after I had pasta. This gave me a clue that I needed to stop all sweets and grains even fruits to stop yeast overgrowth in case it were an yeast infection. Also I needed to increase the population of good bacteria. I stopped eating all grains, fruits and sweets. I started taking an organic whole milk yogurt at least twice a day. I started taking unpasteurized sauerkraut once or twice a day, and miso soup once a day. I continued the multivitamin. Bingo! My lips have recovered. No cracking of the corners or drying any more. I have now reintroduced apple, banana and some mango to my food. I also have started taking small amount of brown rice. I used to eat steel cut oates for breakfast everyday. I stopped that incase it is some kind of allergy. I have been fine with no symptoms. I never had angular chelitis in the past and the condition suddenly developed 3-4 months ago. Interestingly my mother who was visiting me here (Eastern USA) also developed angular chelitis which she never had before. She was eating what we were eating oats, in general so called healthy loe fat food and lot of fruits, no meat and fish occassionally. Her lip problems went away after she returned to her home country. She has been well for almost a year. This made me think it could be some allergic reaction, depletion of good gut bacteria and defficiency of vitamin B as a result of that. Any way one should focus of improving the gut flora with foods containing live culture, avoid sweets/grains for a while to prevent yeast from thriving and take a vitamin B complex. On the exterior keep the area clean with water, dry then use a lip balm. I had used Burt's Bees lip balm with mango butter.

Suffered with long & repeated bouts of it. Finally came across the treatment of a possibly unrelated fungal disease which a doctor has cured for years with one simple product. So, open your kitchen cabinet: Sodium Bicarbonate - baking soda.
I had the typical sores at the edge of my mouth - gone within a day. Worked overnight. That was many months ago. Had been to the doctor who had given me an anti-fungal cream (at least he had the correct diagnosis) and it did Nothing. Changes in weather, stress & tiredness. Nothing has brought back the sores like I used to have every few months once it started. Just dab some baking soda on the sores with your finger, rub it a bit if you like, let a tiny bit of powder stay in the sore for a short while. You might feel the slightest bit of burning - it goes to work immediately. About a month ago, when overly tired, I thought I felt the very initial sign of reocurrence. A dab of baking soda. Gone. Forgot all those scam sites selling you who knows what. Smile again all the time for a few cents worth of baking soda!

I have had Angular Cheilitis twice now. Once a couple years back which I initially thought was a pimple and once again right now.

After it didn't go away for an entire month, somebody convinced me the first time I got it to take abreva (they thought I had a cold sore but clearly they knew nothing about cold sores). The abreva made it go away immediately.

However, this time around, I tried a regular cold sore gel (perhaps I should have bought the same brand, Abreva) and it didn't do ANYTHING. The cut was getting worse and worse and I definitely wasn't gonna let it stay for a month.

So, I went online and read a ton of reviews. I tried the one with the highest rating, which was simply to purchase Campho-Phenique, a gel that relieves cold sores, fever blisters, and pain. It's about half the price of a regular cold sore gel (only $7), you can find it right next to all those gels and chapsticks, and it works wonders!

I have only been using it for 10 hours now since this morning and it's reduced to half the size. I also bought carmex (or vaseline) since petroleum jelly is better for your lips than other chapstick.

It says to only apply 1-3 times a day but I've already applied it like 7 times. If you have extra sensitive skin, I would advise putting only 3 times a day. I'd rather have dry, irritated skin than a mouth sore that is very embarrassing to look at.

That's all I did, hope it helps.

So here's what I came up with.
Keep away from sugars. They will be the death of you in this painful time. Fruit sugars are okay.

Since angular chelitis is a type of yeast infection, Capryl will do you wonders. Its a type of vitamin with calcium, magnesium, Zinc and Caprylic Acid.

What this will do is take up all the excess yeast in your body. Since our bodies naturally produce yeast, you don't wanna get rid of all of your yeast entirely, but balance it.

I know that Solaray makes a resin free, and sodium free capsule for this. And also, Whole Foods Market's private label brand has one. They are the same price, but I'd recommend Solaray, anyway.

Take some multi-vitamins and increase your iron intake via supplements or iron enriched foods.

Also, one last bit of advice, try to use something called Egyptian Magic. I've always used this for cracked lips. Though its kind of pricey, it will keep the cuts moisturised enough while they heal up. If you can find samples of it, by all means do that since the tub is like 36.99 at Whole Foods. Ask a member of their whole body department if they have any samples of anything.

I'm currently trying to get my cuts to heal, but what amazed me was three hours after taking my Capryl supplement, the cuts on my lips started to heal over.

I hope this helps. These things are so embarrassing. Give me feed back.

Vaseline and multi vits! Cleared within 24 hours. I couldn't believe it. My husband is a nutritionist and bought me the best multi vits there is. The Vaseline really helped to sooth lips. Angular cheillitis is caused mainly by lack of iron and certain vitamins. So....put them back in your body. Eat lots of veg and meat and take your supplements and all should be good. Good luck guys, hope this works! Remember, u are what u eat :0)

Hi,
For what it's worth!
I had small cracks in the corners of my mouth for years and just accepted them as “normal”.
I had not even heard of Cheilitis………
However…………
10 days ago cracks opened up and gunk appeared in both corners
Worried I searched the net and found many “overnight cures” available using products you already have at home.
Prices ranging from $30 to $55……….
Not wishing to pay for something I already have and having read up about the condition I thought I would make my own concoction….
All I did was to make up a solution of common salt and a little household bleach (as much as you can cope with) in a glass of warm water.
Method,
1 Brush teeth properly and rinse mouth
2 Rinse mouth 3 times with solution and spit as normal
3 Take solution in mouth and dribble thro’ corners of mouth over infected area 3 times
4 Dry each side with clean tissue making sure you get all the crap out
5 Finally rinse with solution, dry each side of mouth with clean tissue for each side to avoid cross contamination
6 Apply Vaseline/Petroleum Jelly to each side using little fingers, one finger for each side and only dip finger in container once for each side of mouth.

Repeat as necessary or when you can.

For me it was 70% better the next morning and was completely (that is to say even the small cracks I had lived with for years had gone) cleared up by day 3.

I think the trick is to make sure that kill the infection and exercise scrupulous cleanliness to avoid cross contamination until cracks are healed.

Rubbing alcohol was key for me. Previous application of vaseline alone had failed. After reading this site I began washing with Dial antibacterial soap, drying, then applying rubbing alcohol to the corners of my mouth with clean QTips. I'd hold the QTips in place a few seconds -burning is normal. I'd let it dry then apply vaseline to my entire lips, focusing on the corners of my mouth.

After maybe 4 days my mouth no longer hurt and the cracks from the cheilitis were gone. Some pinkness remains but I am sure that will resolve itself as I continue to heal.

I haa a bad case of angular cheilitis and it caused soo much embaressment.I followed the below steps since last few days and have seen significant improvement
* Take B-complex capsules
* Have greek yoghurt three times a day.(No yoplait. It has sugars and yeast feeds on sugar)
* stopped eating sugary stuff. Eat more veggies and fruits.
* Apply a lil bit of yoghurt at night on lesions. Morning apply jojoba oil.

both my daughters had angular cheilitis and nothing worked until i dabbed some tea tree oil on a cotton swab to infected area twice a day (morning and bedtime) then put coconut oil on afterwards. It cleared up in three days. make sure to use a good chapstick too, i like burts bees. tea tree oil is not to be ingested but i used such a tiny amount being careful to not get it in the mouth.

This is my remedy for angular cheilitis. I did my research on the Internet and found conflicting reasons and 'cures'. Some said that it was caused by a fungus and others by a bacteria. So I tried remedies for both at the same time. First I would rub liquid antibacterial soap onto the cracks at the corners of my mouth. I would leave this on for about ten minutes and then rinse it off. Next I would rub on an anti-fungal cream and follow with a layer of Vaseline. I did this a couple of times a day. After a day and a half of doing this, the painful cracks were gone and it no longer hurts to open my mouth! I will continue to do this at night for a few more days and hope that the problem is gone for good. But if not, I will try this treatment again. I hope this helps others who are suffering from this painful, unsightly condition!

Hello, if you are here that means you just discovered you have Angular cheilitis another word for severe chapped lips and reddish sores in the corners of your mouth. It seems like as soon as you get out of the shower you have to put chapstick on otherwise your lips shrivel if you are feeling this this means you have passed the stage of just regular chapped lips (little dryness) that just a little aquaphor can fix. When you have cracks in corner of your mouth and your lips feel real tight this means that your lips either have bacteria or a fungus thriving in the cracks of your mouth because they are moist. This bacteria or fungus is just the normal bacteria and yeast on our skin that multiply when it can (opportunistic). This is the very reason why some treatments work for some people because it depends what infection they have either fungal, bacterial , or even both, or some people use carmax or aquaphor because it wasn't infected and that works for them. I just got it recently and had no idea what it was wrong with my lips because I did not develop the reddish crusty sores on the corner of mouth at first it was a weird feeling of rawness and tightening and did not appear by looking at my lips that something was wrong but the feeling was awful so of course I tell people and they act like I'm being dramatic well little did I know i was passed just using chaptick but of course I bought aquaphor, blistex ect with no help just kept getting worse but it didn't look bad to other people. I then saw little red spots so I was like omg I'm getting cold sores but it was just inflammation and I started using abrevia which only made it worse by the way I never had any cold sores but if you ever had a cold sore during this time you are more and likely to get one so buy abrevia to have on hand because imangine angular cheilitis and a cold sore that would be terrible especially if you are a girl. Remember a cold sore starts off as a little tingling and painful sore spot on the lip or the edge of it before it appears so as soon as you feel that you put that abrevia or denavir (stronger + more expensive) and at night warm a tea bag and break it open put the cream on and put the tea that you broke out of the bag and put it on top because Black tea has tannic acid that helps prevent blisters and sleep like that. Anyways so back to AC, the tighteness went on for a month!!!!! then all of sudden I woke up with yellowish crust on corners of mouth and on bottom lips I was horrified and didn't know what it was I made an appointment with my doctor he told me it is AC and said take B complex and Vitamin C and said just wait it will get better and if you are younger doctors will give you denavir cold sore cream because they assume (I'm a nursing student and seen doctors usually assume certain things about younger patients). my doctor was nice but I don't think doctors fully grasp how devastating and embarrassing it is and I mean it really is chapped lips not cancer so they don't take it seriously and if you have not experienced it for yourself you honestly don't know and others you have not had it are just like it is just chapped lips (lol). Okay, now first when you read don't get scared like I did I saw that people had it for years or months and I had it for a month and 17 days so when I was reading everyone's experience i was crying that this is going to be forever and when you read the causes they say people with chemo treatment, elderly, and Hiv patients and you are like I'm young and not seriously sick what in the world?! So, I'm letting you know it can be stress and maybe if you usually eat healthy and stop like I did because of school and drank coffee that is probably why it happened to me then it got infected so just remember the people that have been suffering it for years probably have and underlying disease like celiac, diabetes, or hypothyroidism or even taking anitbiotics or accutane. It took a month and 17 days just because I didn't now about it and what infection it was mine in particular was secondary fungal infection so that explains why antibacterial cream, hydrocortisone cream, and chapstick didnt work. A fungal infection has to be treated it won't go away just as a bacterial infection. So one thing you have to learn don't use ANY chapstick it will only make it worse or infect the rest of your mouth by moving it around. Use vaseline and dip q-tips in it and NEVER DIP TWICE and WASH HANDS before each application with antibacterial soap is key this will help you feel better but that is not going to treat it. So, now I have lol heard everything what people have done use tea tree oil, OTC antifungal for jock itch or monistat (vagisil), vinegar, grapefruit extract, alcohol, antibacterial antibitoic cream ect. Okay well in the beginning if your infection is not bad tea tree oil can work it is good because it is used for bacteria, virus, and fungus so it takes out the guessing work so if you don't have a lot of money you can buy it at a health store but as for me mine was there for a good while so i had to get an antifungal prescribed to me which i used Nystatin now at first i was dissappointed i thought the next day by magic it would look a lot better well it didn't at all!!! i kept up with it by the third day it dramatically improved. Now with an antifungal remember you HAVE to keep up with it even when you are all better mine I have to apply twice for thirty dys after that I intend to use tea tree oil and mix it with vaseline and put it on my lips at night especially around the corners to act as a barrier for drool (maybe that is a reason too! i am a side sleeper). because if you are not consistent with treating the infection either it is fungus or bacterial it will happen again and of course you don't want it!!!! Since mine is caused by fungus I do gargle with one drop of tea tree oil and water (trust me it is disgusting/potent one drop is enough) and brush teeth after each meal with plain crest tartar control (at this time stay away from high potent toothpaste with colors go basic) and also take two probiotics and of course taking B-complex and a multi vitamin with vitamin C. Nutrtion is important but it will take time but during this time drink the recommended water with a straw I just used water bottles they have 2 serving sizes so I drank four bottles each day and took all supplementation but of course you also have to eat healthy your body absorbs it better so eat oatmeal, carrots, broccoli, banana (because it doesnt burn like oranges) sweet potatos, yogurt low in sugar, make fruit smoothies or protein smoothies ,eat chicken ,turkey burgers (cut up patty and chicken in pieces) you need protein to heal. Remember vitamin defficiencys seen with AC are B vitamins, Iron, Folic acid, and Vitamin C so keep that in mind while choosing foods to eat. Now if it bacterial you can get an antibacterial oitment like neosporin if a mild infection but if not go get an antibiotic ointment prescribed that is stronger and don't even use hydrocortisone if a doctor recommends it because it is not going to do zip it decreses inflammation but has a lot of side effects you can decrease inflammation other ways like a warm tea bag. Don't touch your lips leave it and don't go buy that AC Cure book people have given the steps out for free here and other sites which can work too the treatment with washing the lips with antibacterial soap first the putting vaseline on for two hours. It is very drying though, but the key with to these steps make sure you try not to contaminate anything act like you are about to perform surgery the writer said to use 2 bowls so you clean it right there not touching the faucet don't skip those steps I see why he said to do this don't skip to an easier version of it do the full steps with washing and cleaning the area before starting the steps. I say after you perform this treatment and it works for you still continue a healthy diet and supplementation and mix tea tree oil with vaseline and wear it at night especially to prevent it coming back and actually making sure it's cleared. I think that is why sometimes this treatment does not work with everyone especially if it is fungal because it takes awhile for it to clear. Now if you tried all these and properly used these treatments with no success see if there may be another cause go get a Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) it gives an overall status of your health checks multiple things like protein, glucose, kidney function ect. Also consider the idea of Canididia Albicans if you are overall feeling fatigue and grumpy, plain 'just not right' It means that fungus/yeast has developed so much in other parts of your body you may not see that you are going to need to take oral antifungal medication like diflucan and you HAVE to bring it up to doctors or medical field really don't know a lot about fungus and this can cause many people to be sick for years and they take every test known to man without avail then the doctor might stereotype you as a hypochondriac, that it is all in your mind ,so that too could be an underlying cause. Trust me I know how it is to feel noone understands what you are going through and you wonder why it just can't be treated as a nursing student I get very frustrated that it seems like noone ever knows anything when you seek care and you waste all your money on 'guessing' . This is why when I become a nurse I'm going to explain and really try to see the patient's view! sorry so long but i promised after having it i was going to share my eperience and explain what it is and what to do!

I too suffer with Angular cheilitis, had dry flaking lips for years before any open sores developed, but when they did, it was with a vengance. I now have the open sores healed, but the lips and corners of the mouth are still very sore/tender. I was wondering if this is a permanent thing a person has to deal with??? Will they ever feel normal again, or once you have AC, is it always there and ready to flare up again??? I'd appreciate any comments.

The therapy I used was the dish washing soap, a prescription anti bacterial & anti fungal from my Dr. The anti bacterial was very expensive and one used to fight tough infections such as staph

I sure can relate to the drooling, and sure wished there was an explaination for that, as I never used to have that problem. Mine is not only at night, but anytime during the day, it'll happen. I'm a 70 y.o. man and contribute it to the muscles in the face not being as taunt and the sagging, almost permanent frown resulting from that. At any rate I try to keep smiling, even though it's a trial. I certainnly don't have any abundance of saliva, just wished it would stay inside my mouth. Dick

I developed angular cheilitis as a side effect of being on Isotretinoin (which causes extremely dry/chapped lips). I tried putting some 1% Hydrocortisone ointment on it 3-4x daily and it helped, but the downside was that I had to keep reapplying it. When I told my dermatologist about it, she recommended the following:

>>>>> Dr. Dan's CortiBalm <<<<<<

Where can it be found?
Amazon.com
eBay
DermStore
100s of other online drug stores- just Google 'Dr. Dan's Cortibalm'
Your local pharmacy (sometimes you have to special-order it using a form you print out from Dr. Dan's website)

- Did it work?
Yes.

- Did it work better than the 1% hydrocortisone ointment?
Yes.

- How long did it take for the angular cheilitis to heal?
~3 days

-How did I use it?
Just apply on one's lips & corners of the mouth about 3x/day until it's healed. (I actually ended up doing it less- ~2x daily & it still healed fine)

-Why did it work?
Dunno for sure (I'm not a doctor). I suspect it's b/c of the microionized hydrocortisone in the balm itself.

I'd tried every other lip balm on the market, and this was the ONLY one that healed it.

1. To prevent or treat mild cases: stop using any kind of 'oral rinse' before going to bed at night -- no Listerine (dries out your mouth) and no weird calcium stuff (gives bacteria stuff to feed on). Coat the corners of your mouth liberally with Carmex (the kind in the little pot with the yellow lid.

2. To treat more serious cases...use a cotton swap to apply .05% hydrocortisone to the affected area 2x per day. Use the Carmex as well.

3. If the hydrocortisone on its own doesn't work, try a VERY SMALL DAB of Lamisil (yes, the athlete's foot cream) on each corner of your mouth. You aren't supposed to put it on your face, but sometimes it's the only thing that works!! You may need a tiny bit of moisturizer over it, too, as it can dry out skin.

I seriously recommend going to the Chemist to get some cream for nappy rash - zinc oxide & castor oil combination!! I was recommended by a pharmacist as I had angular cheilitis really badly but since applying topically, I have my lips and below the lip area back in tact. Follow up with some vaseline to seal.

Believe it or not, the absolute best thing to use is vinegar. Simply open your mouth as far as you comfortably can, dab it on, and allow it to dry. (I fan my mouth with my hand or a piece of paper to hurry it along.) YES, it may sting, but if you're as sick of it as I was, and I'm sure you are, then it is WELL WORTH IT. After seeing how well it worked, the next time it occurred, I WELCOMED that sting! Knowing it would soon be healed. :D

I know it sounds nuts; I know it sounds way to simple, but, honestly, I've tried the anti-fungal creams, blistex, prescriptions, and everything else mentioned here, and after YEARS of dealing with this, it was plain old cider vinegar that finally wiped it out completely. And, it didn't take days and days either, but starts to heal it as soon as it's applied!

Also, two years after finding out about the vinegar cure, and then adding a multi-vitamin and mineral supplement to my diet in order to stop the root cause (thus stopping the breakouts completely), I THEN found out that it was CELIAC DISEASE at the root of BOTH.

I urge anyone and everyone suffering with this problem to look up the symptoms of it as it's incredibly rare that a doctor will even bother to check for it unless YOU bring the question to HIM/HER; even though, 1 in 100 suffer with it.

Good luck, all. <3

SALT + WATER on the open cut to kill the fungi. Then i purchased Aquaphor and rubbed it on my lips and the corners of my mouth.

I did this last Saturday. By sunday morning I felt real improvement.

Today is Wednesday and I can eat and open my mouth wide without any pain at all! The wound is completely healed.

I can most certainly relate as I have dealt with all the negative aspects of Angular Chelitis, having had it in active form myself for close to a year, if not more. I tried everything & finally came across this stuff.

I came across an article that said Angular Chelitis can be either yeast caused, bacterial, and fungal, or a combination of the three, which I believe I have had.

So, I did some research & found this ointment. I used it twice daily for a week, then at bed time by the beginning of the second week.

Thermazine
(Silver Sulfadiazine) Cream 1%

Google it.

I bought it on Amazon, but you can probably find it elsewhere. I did not need a prescription. I have NO connection financially to gain. I only want to help others get relief & their smiles back!

I haven't had a recurrence in over a MONTH! I waited till I was crack free to spread the news. lol

It had been active for what seemed like an eternity. I was SO miserable with the cracking, pain & bleeding, not to mention embarrassed by the way it looked.

Best of luck & God bless!

I had tried the whole 9 yards of home remedies, and nothing worked. There was no cream or salve that worked either. I was doing some research on the internet about the condition, and I ran across articles saying it was actually a form of yeast infection. I had some Monistat in the medicine cabinet, so thought, what the heck and put some of that on it. It has been a miracle and cleared it right up! I've never had a full blown case since, as whenever I can tell I'm getting it, I just put a little Monistat on it, and it never even develops. It has been a Godsend. I remember my Grandfather having this his entire life and never getting rid of it. I won't have to deal with this ever again!

My remedy:
Blistex Medicated Ointment. (Not the balm!)Take the ointment and gently rub it into the cuts, as well as on your lips. It may burn a little if your cuts are deep or are really inflamed. Apply this at least 3 times daily or when you feel that your lips are dry.

My story:
When I first noticed that I was getting Angular Cheilitis (a cut in the corner of my mouth), I assumed it was no big deal and that it'd heal on it's own. Boy, was I wrong. The cut just kept getting worse and after 3 weeks, I was getting so frustrated that I'd planned to go to the doctor.
Well, before I set up an appointment, my mom suggested I try Blistex. So, I figured it was at least worth a try. Within hours I noticed a difference! After 3 days of using the Blistex, my cut was no longer painful and was starting to heal. It also stopped hurting when I had to open my mouth to yawn or eat, which was amazing. Within about 5 days, it was completely healed.

Note:
My cut wasn't very deep or inflamed, but it was extremely painful. When dealing with more serious Angular Cheilitis, it's more than likely going to take longer to heal.

Wanted to let y'all know what worked for my angular chellitis - neosporin. I thought it was just dry skin until a few weeks of a yucky crusty scab prompted me to google it and I discovered it was angular chellitis, probably brought on by my using Retin-A. I tried several remedies that did not help: bakind soda, honey, etc. I read that it's either yeast or bacteria so I tried a yeast cream I had laying around- nothing. Finally I dabbed on neosporin and it began clearing up quickly. Guess mine was bacterial so try it!

I tried the apple cider vinegar dabbing for over a week but it didnt help. It seemed to make my Perleche/Angular Cheilitis worse. My lips and cracks were still opening up and I could barely open my mouth when eating. It was getting pretty ugly. I also decided not to try aftershave or cologne, that seemed a little haphazard.

I also didn't want to buy these greedy remedies online nor see a dermatologist ($$). Thankfully, after doing a little more research, I realized I needed to make one simple change in my remedy: keep the area DRY!

I learned that I just needed to simply cover the cracks and mouth corners with a little dab (not too much) of clotrimazole cream - I used Lotrimin AF. Then, cover each Lotrimin dab with a Vaseline-type protection jelly. I used Aquaphor, a little more expensive but it really seems to help and it's scent-free, unlike Carmex. I've been doing this at least 4 times a day for 2 days.

The Aquaphor is to keep any moisture or water out of your cracks which is the whole point: keeping the area dry so the fungus/bacteria will starve to death and die since they need moisture to eat and survive. I especially did this when I went to bed (drooling).

I also cut down on my sugar intake but not completely. I'm eating Total cereal in the morning (which has good iron content) with Vanilla soymilk which has sugar. But it doesn't seem to hinder the healing. I think you all know what kind of sugars you shouldn't eat.

I also bought a B-100 Complex Vitamin formula (Nature's Way brand), not a B-50, and took a pill once a day. And I finished that up with a multi-vitamin with Iron. The Iron makes me a little nervous (I'm a male) but when the Perleche is completely gone in a couple days hopefully, I'll go back to my iron-free multi.

So after about a month with this condition, my Perleche/Angular Cheilitis is nearly gone, finally! I hope the above remedy helps. If it doesn't, best of luck with your remedy.

I tried this cream twice a day for the first week, then & now, I use it nightly before bed.

Only came back once after three nights of not using it.

WELL worth a try!

Good luck!

P.S. I found it at Amazon.

Daktarin oral gel. I live in Ireland so don't know about it's availability elsewhere but it's basically an anti-fungal mouth gel with a sweet taste! Works a treat though and takes the sting out of the horrible rash quickly. This coupled with taking Vit B Complex and iron tablet and Vit C tablet (the one that disolves in water apparently to help absorb the iron). Soreness gone in a day and rash in about three. I would advice taking the vits even after the rash has gone just to be safe!

I suffered from angular cheilitis for two weeks before I found a remedy.

I think it was due to the fact that I am anorexic I had it in the first place. Initially, I used to wash it with soap and apply vaseline but it did not help. I also tried applying cologne on it. It used to sting like hell but nothing happened.

After this I started eating properly and stopped skipping meals. I also drank milk three times a day. Trust me it helps because milk has Vitamin B12.

This is what I did for my angular cheilitis and the cracks have healed completely:
1. Wash your cracks thoroughly with soap and remove the crusts with a tissue or Q tip. Now your cracks should be visible.
2. Take a drop of cologne or after shave and apply it directly on the cracks. This stings like hell and you may want to beat someone up but tolerate it.
3. Wipe the cracks with tissue again because the cologne helps release some liquid from the cracks.
4. Apply liquid paraffin generously to your lips and cracks.

This will heal your cracks completely in 2 days. Ask me if it does not. However, remember to eat nutritious food because this condition is caused by malnutrition and poor resistance to infection.

I got this recommended by my dentist and it appears to be working!

Simple thing, apply some of that anti bacterial foam on it as often as you can, or as I didn't have this, use anti bacterial soap or handwash, with zinc I think helps a bit. This will kill the bacteria and dry it up nicely and hopefully heal soon after that.

Applying benzoine/myrrh tincture with a cotton swab about 3-4 times daily cured it for me in just a few days. Also took a multivitamin with iron/b complex supplements to aid in immune properties. My dentist gave me the tincture for free after I explained my problem. They use it for patients with open sores in their mouths to prevent infection.

Use less strong toothpastes such as Pepsodent and take B-complex. I read article that some strong toothpastes has ingredient which accelerates this. Totally worked for me. Less than 5$. Never happened again.
