PLEASE use caution when trying any home remedies for an abscessed tooth! I am speaking from (unfortunate) lots of experience.
If you have an abscess that you can see on your gum (looks like a really gross pimple), you technically can drain it yourself to relieve the pressure that is causing the pain. Unfortunately, this could lead to an even more serious infection, so I don't recommend this unless you are absolutely certain you have no other alternatives available to you. If you go this route, you should still see a dentist ASAP.
If you CANNOT see the abscess, a lot of these home remedies just won't work...or at least they did not for me. I tried the tea, teabags, warm salt water rinses, peroxide, garlic, salt, you name it and I tried it one Sunday evening when I had no where to go for help and thought I was going to chop my face off...not only did none of these make it feel better but within minutes the pain was substantially WORSE than anything I'd ever experienced. Some of these treatments might be great at drawing out the infection to give you relief, but in my case there was no where for the infection to go. Even warm water itself was irritating and made the pain worse, because of the heat.
The ONE thing that did actually work was holding cold water inside my mouth against the tooth itself, the colder the better. Yes, the tooth was sensitive to the temperature, but for whatever reason it didn't hurt at all and for a few minutes at a time made the pain stop. It really did only work for 2-5 minutes at a time, however, and since it was a weekend and NO dentist could seem to help me, I literally had cold water in my mouth almost constantly for something like 38 straight hours. I fell asleep with water in my mouth because I was so tired at one point, and I carried a jug of it with me to urgent care, but I didn't care how it looked because those 2 minutes without pain were just amazing. (Mind you, this was after my 3rd antibiotic just didn't help even a little bit)
If you have an abscess, the only way it will ever go away is to see a dentist or oral surgeon for either a root canal or an extraction. An antibiotic will help kill part of the infection, enough to alleviate the pain at least if you're lucky, but it will never completely go away until it's taken care of. The antibiotic might not even help you. If you're lucky enough to receive a painkiller, understand that it will take the horrific pain away but you'll still feel pressure which is still uncomfortable. You need to see an dentist ASAP.
For what it's worth, I had to have an abscessed tooth extracted a few years ago by an oral surgeon and I didn't have any dental or medical insurance at the time...the procedure cost less than $300. Completely worth it, considering the pain and risks involved in letting it go untreated.

I GET AFRAID OF THE DENTIST BECAUSE THEY DO SCARY THINGS TO YOUR MOUTH AND I DONT LIKE THE DENTIST BECAUSE THEY WORK INSIDE OF YOUR MOUTH AND ITS SCARY WHEN THEY DO SCARY THINGS TO YOUR MOUTH AND I THINK THAT SOME PEOPLE NEVER GO TO THE DENTIST BECAUSE THEY GET NERVOUS AND THEY DONT LIKE PEOPLE WORKING IN THIER MOUTH I MEAN THAT CAN BE KINDA SCARY WHEN THEY PULL TEETH OUT OF YOUR MOUTH AND THATS SCARY

Of course you should use caution when using home remedies, I would however say that safe and effective antibiotics will treat and eliminate an abscess. It will not however treat the cause of the abscess. The human mouth (yes, even with Scope, etc is a filthy breeding ground for bacteria, some good, some bad,my experience only keeping the mouth clean prevents dental problems and eliminating abcesses through internal and external disinfection makes more sense than saying owie, owie, I need a dentist. Latest research suggests long term effects of root canals may not be a good thing.

I do not know any dentist that will even tough a tooth that is abscessed. because the infection will spread into the blood stream if they attempted to extracted it and cause you to have even more problems. Every time I have an abscess (Like I do now) on my left bottom jaw looks like someone punched me and sure feels like it too.

I can feel it comming on slightly in just a few days especially over night it seems to get worse. I was told and it works for me to egt regular asprin and wrap 2 pills in 1 sheet of toilet paper and tuck it between your cheek and let the pills dissolve and it some how draws the fluid out but there is no draining. I did it one time with out wrapping the pills and it cause a canker sore to for in the same place.

hahahaha i like this person! The home remedies may wrk for some pple but they sure didnt wrk for me. I did them for 2-3 weeks in december then i finally had to throw the white flag up and go to the E.R. at 2:45 in the morning. They gave me antibiotics and tramadol. The infection went down in a week. Ill be honest tho the tramadol didnt touch the pain. I just had to suffer. Well anyways they scheduled me an emergency extraction the next week. But at the time of them scheduling my appointment i was in alot of pain just wanting to have it pulled i completely forgot my 2 year old son was scheaduled two days after mine to get 9 teeth pulled.(I BRUSH HIS TEETH!HE HAS WEAK ANAMOL ON HIS BABY TEETH!) So it was either paying for me to have my tooth pulled and finally be releived or my sons. So, it was my son. :) To make a long story short here i am just a little over a month later i have an abscess again. That just shows it comes right back if u dont have something done with it. This time i was determined to do just the home remedies because my husband left his other job and started a new one and we dont have insurance on us till next month. So basically i didnt think i was goin to be able to afford the dentist visit or my antibiotics. I did the home remedies for a little over a week this time and my whole right bottom jaw was so swollen. I looked like eddie murphy in nutty professor when he was changing from the fat eddie murphy back to the skinny. Not only that i layed up in bed for 48 hrs strait thinking i had the stomach virus flu mixed. Vomitting and then tossing and turning screaming and crying about my mouth and face hurting so bad. I tried then to put warm salty water in my mouth. Uh nope! that sure didnt work. Tried ice packs for swellin, then a heating pad. Swapping those up every 5 min helped. But constantly doin that ontop of vomitting and having hot sweats then chills. Oh goodness it sucked. I was so weak, i couldnt eat the whole time i was in the bed. Then that next morning came around i was fine, i woke up and played with my kids then went to look and see how much worse my face looked and oh my gosh i didnt think my skin on my face could stretch that far out. I opened my mouth and looked in it and i saw the abscess bubble thing. Mine popped on its on like ten minutes later. Yuck all in my mouth i was gagging at the same time of feeling pressure just racing off my face, gums, and tooth. I tried to rinse my mouth with warm water then and it got in that gapping hole and brought me to my knees in pain. About an hour later i went back to the doctor to get more antibiotics and pain releivers. And he asked me this time what pain releiver i wanted and i told him lortabs. So my face is numb while im waiting on the swelling to go down so i can have my tooth pulled. My prescriptions for my antibiotics alone cost $92 and the pain pills were only $10. My husband makes pretty good money but we have 6 children altogether that we have full custody of and his income is the only income we have. But i was goin to make sure i got what i needed to help my pain and swelling go down fast. So I went to a dear friend of mine and asked to borrow the money cause u best beleive i wasnt going through no more pain after what i encountered. Im only 23 and i didnt want to have it extracted i wanted a root canal and crown but had to wait for my new insurance so me being just ridiculous is what made me go through all this heck. Shouldve just let the tooth fairy take my permanent grown up tooth. Im scheduled in one week to have it extracted and u better believe thats exactly what im doing! :) The home remedies might work on alot of people but everybody is different. Or it could all just irritate it worse and make u look like the elephant man like it has me looking now. Thats for that person to decide and i shall not judge nobody. U just have more guts than i do. Good luck to anybody that has or is ever goin to have to endure the pain i did. Well wish me luck whoever is reading this cause in five days my tooth is goin to tooth fairy heaven!

p.s. Everybody that has an acsessed tooth that is planning on doing the home remedies should at least research a little about the infection that could possibly get in your blood and the severity of going un treated properly. So try your remedies if u like for a few days but if it gets worse or progresses faster go to the darn emergency room and get antibiotics and real pain meds that will make the pain truly subside. Dont make yourself suffer!
