A few of my patients have used this site for quick patches, and i wanted to check it out.

I want to make this very, very clear.

DO NOT DRAIN YOUR ABSCESS.

The fact i have to explain why means a lot of people are simply not thinking before they take action, and pain is a precursor for doing dumb things...

Ever stub your toe and then punch something in anger hurting your hand...
Idiots do this.

First,
What is an abscess...
I will keep it simple, at the root of the tooth, sometimes in the gums soft tissue itself is a infection.

Infections feed like humans, they need oxygen, minerals, and time. When the infection over runs the body's natural defensive system it begins to spread laterally, or into the jaw itself, up the face, down the neck...

Second...
When you puncture the abscess at home, you have done exactly what the infection needs to stay alive and well.

You have also made the infection stronger, as the pus drains it will
feel great.. you will think... cured!

Take the rest of your antibiotics, and move on... maybe a few months later when the cash is around you will have the work done.

Lastly...

In the meantime, the infection now has more room, more bacteria, oxygen, minerals, and pathways for the infection to spread.

(please don't be dumb enough to think burning a needle or 'sterilizing' a tooth pick won't induce bacteria. You just put a hole in the gum.. and the human mouth has MILLIONS of bacteria, even after mouthwash... sorry scope fans, 99.9% of dead bacteria is still millions of bacteria.

At this point you have drained the abscess and feel good. One month goes by
and you get a fever. Your gum/tooth feels fine, but the fever gets worse.

Your now at the E.R, with a 103 temp, diarrhea, vomiting and massive pains threw out your body.

They admit you, and begin antibiotics after seeing the obvious septic blood..

Its too late, and the liver/kidneys begin to shut down.. your brain begins to swell. You are put in a drug induced coma. At this point you will most likely be dead within 72 hours of entering the E.R doors.

Over a needle to put in your infected gum.

Please, please understand i've watched people die from this, every year over and over people do this idiotic stuff and end up dead.

Stats, about 250-300,000 each year.

DO NOT DRAIN THE ABSCESS AT HOME.

Get to a dentist, get antibiotics, get the tooth pulled, and let your body do what it was designed to do.

I know the pain is bad, but its not going to last for your entire life, death however does.

A tooth can be pulled at our office for $200-400 without insurance, sell a car, take out a loan, borrow money.. whatever it takes...

I have a comment to all of the dentists on here...if it is so important that nobody lance their own abscess then why do ER doctors and some dentists do it? And it is NOT that easy to come up with the money to see a dentist. Some of us are unemployed no matter what we have tried, and have only one car to get a spouse to work, so can't sell it. If you are so adamant about someone in this condition seeing a dentist immediately, then why don't some of you greedy SoB's sack up and do some pro bono work in emergencies like this?! I am so tired of seeing this everywhere I look...and I don't know about places other than the midwest, but here an ER won't do anything for you if it is dental. You have to suffer until it is in the jaw and sinuses like I am experiencing now, where I have pockets popping up along my lymph nodes all over my body, just to be seen. You then have to hope and prey that the doctor is sympathetic and will see you...some still won't. Dentists are the worst kind of doctor, they don't have to greed of a hospital to hide behind, they just won't see you until the have all of their money. 'Need a follow up or a stronger antibiotic? Too bad, you owe the dentist $20 that you haven't paid off yet.' F-ing greedy, heartless a-holes...

dontgothere

sell a car? seriously? how about you give them a break and let them pay over time?

single, recently unemployed mother

Ok i am 24years old and i completely agree wit u, ive tried anything and everything possible 2 come up wit money 2 go 2 a dentist! An im sure as hell not selling the 1 and only vehicle i have bcuz i have a 4year old son that needs his mom 2 find a job in the crappiest town in Kentucky! I have 4 broken teeth that kill me every single day an i can't do anything about bcuz i can't get help 4 the health issues i already have wit my ovaries

Disconcerted but needs dental assistance!

Aspen Dental,
Your comments about 'sell a car, get a second, third job, ' etc, are absolutely ridiculous. What about the people that have 2 full time jobs each and children that still need a parent, but even with two great jobs, this parent is still struggling and perhaps knows that they need major dental work done (because of an infection or swelling), but they just cannot afford the work. Yes, it would be more 'expensive''if things get worse, but STILL, dentists, especially Aspen Dental, will not see you without full payment. Why not offer your patients options for payments?
Your industry has turned from one that used to care about people's dental care AND the patient to a greedy business that cares only about the bottom line.
Sad.

Why do dentist's over there have to be soo greedy. In the uk in a dental emergency like a absess same day appointment pay installments and its only the lowest charge of £18 why cant everyone be like that or is it always about the size of their house or bank account?

i need some good , effective advice. please try to refrain from being judgemental and mean. im in a fragile state right now. im 39 and have only been to the dentist once in my life, i was 12. something horrible happened at that visit that has resulted in me never returning to a dentist since.over the years i have used periodontal scalers and curettes as well as a rubber polisher and my own homemade gritty toothpaste followed by
a fluoride rinse to routinely clean my teeth.if i find a cavity i have been filling it after removing decay with temp fillings. my problem is i am in extreme pain (tooth) , face is swollen in one side from below eye to jaw. CAN NOT GO TO A DENTIST! any ideas what it is?
